The field of computer vision has witnessed phenomenal progress in recent years partially due to the development of deep convolutional neural networks. However, deep learning models are notoriously sensitive to adversarial examples which are synthesized by adding quasi-perceptible noises on real images. Some existing defense methods require to re-train attacked target networks and augment the train set via known adversarial attacks, which is inefficient and might be unpromising with unknown attack types. To overcome the above issues, we propose a portable defense method, online alternate generator, which does not need to access or modify the parameters of the target networks. The proposed method works by online synthesizing another image from scratch for an input image, instead of removing or destroying adversarial noises. To avoid pretrained parameters exploited by attackers, we alternately update the generator and the synthesized image at the inference stage. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed defensive scheme and method outperforms a series of state-of-the-art defending models against gray-box adversarial attacks.
With the advent of deep learning models, face recognition systems have achieved impressive recognition rates. The workhorses behind this success are Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and the availability of large training datasets. However, we show that small human-imperceptible changes to face samples can evade most prevailing face recognition systems. Even more alarming is the fact that the same generator can be extended to other traits in the future. In this work, we present how such a generator can be trained and also extended to other biometric modalities, such as fingerprint recogniti…

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial attack despite their tremendous success in many AI fields. Adversarial attack is a method that causes the intended misclassfication by adding imperceptible perturbations to legitimate inputs. Researchers have developed numerous types of adversarial attack methods. However, from the perspective of practical deployment, these methods suffer from several drawbacks such as long attack generating time, high memory cost, insufficient robustness and low transferability. We propose a Content-aware Adversarial Attack Generator (CAG) to achieve r…

Adversarial attacks involve adding, small, often imperceptible, perturbations to inputs with the goal of getting a machine learning model to misclassifying them. While many different adversarial attack strategies have been proposed on image classification models, object detection pipelines have been much harder to break. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to craft adversarial examples by solving a constrained optimization problem using an adversarial generator network. Our approach is fast and scalable, requiring only a forward pass through our trained generator network to craft an adv…

In the scenario of black-box adversarial attack, the target model's parameters are unknown, and the attacker aims to find a successful adversarial perturbation based on query feedback under a query budget. Due to the limited feedback information, existing query-based black-box attack methods often require many queries for attacking each benign example. To reduce query cost, we propose to utilize the feedback information across historical attacks, dubbed example-level adversarial transferability. Specifically, by treating the attack on each benign example as one task, we develop a meta-learning…

The existence of adversarial examples capable of fooling trained neural network classifiers calls for a much better understanding of possible attacks to guide the development of safeguards against them. This includes attack methods in the challenging non-interactive blackbox setting, where adversarial attacks are generated without any access, including queries, to the target model. Prior attacks in this setting have relied mainly on algorithmic innovations derived from empirical observations (e.g., that momentum helps), lacking principled transferability guarantees. In this work, we provide a …
Recent advances in autoencoders and generative models have given rise to effective video forgery methods, used for generating so-called "deepfakes". Mitigation research is mostly focused on post-factum deepfake detection and not on prevention. We complement these efforts by introducing a novel class of adversarial attacks---training-resistant attacks---which can disrupt face-swapping autoencoders whether or not its adversarial images have been included in the training set of said autoencoders. We propose the Oscillating GAN (OGAN) attack, a novel attack optimized to be training-resistant, whic…

Generating a virtual try-on image from in-shop clothing images and a model person's snapshot is a challenging task because the human body and clothes have high flexibility in their shapes. In this paper, we develop a Virtual Try-on Generative Adversarial Network (VITON-GAN), that generates virtual try-on images using images of in-shop clothing and a model person. This method enhances the quality of the generated image when occlusion is present in a model person's image (e.g., arms crossed in front of the clothes) by adding an adversarial mechanism in the training pipeline.
This paper presents a deep learning based approach to the problem of human pose estimation. We employ generative adversarial networks as our learning paradigm in which we set up two stacked hourglass networks with the same architecture, one as the generator and the other as the discriminator. The generator is used as a human pose estimator after the training is done. The discriminator distinguishes ground-truth heatmaps from generated ones, and back-propagates the adversarial loss to the generator. This process enables the generator to learn plausible human body configurations and is shown to …

The emerging vision-and-language navigation (VLN) problem aims at learning to navigate an agent to the target location in unseen photo-realistic environments according to the given language instruction. The main challenges of VLN arise mainly from two aspects: first, the agent needs to attend to the meaningful paragraphs of the language instruction corresponding to the dynamically-varying visual environments; second, during the training process, the agent usually imitate the shortest-path to the target location. Due to the discrepancy of action selection between training and inference, the age…
Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks are known to be difficult to train, especially when the conditions are continuous and high-dimensional. To partially alleviate this difficulty, we propose a simple generator regularization term on the GAN generator loss in the form of Lipschitz penalty. Thus, when the generator is fed with neighboring conditions in the continuous space, the regularization term will leverage the neighbor information and push the generator to generate samples that have similar conditional distributions for each neighboring condition. We analyze the effect of the propos…

Firstly, we present the channel-attentive EdgeConv to fully exploit the local structures as well as the global shape in point features. Secondly, we observe that the concatenation manner used by vanilla foldings limits its potential of generating a complex and faithful shape. Enlightened by the success of StyleGAN, we regard the shape feature as style code that modulates the normalization layers during the folding, which considerably enhances its capability. Thirdly,…

State-of-the-art methods for image-to-image translation with Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can learn a mapping from one domain to another domain using unpaired image data. However, these methods require the training of one specific model for every pair of image domains, which limits the scalability in dealing with more than two image domains. In addition, the training stage of these methods has the common problem of model collapse that degrades the quality of the generated images. To tackle these issues, we propose a Dual Generator Generative Adversarial Network (G$^2$GAN), which is a…

Recently, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have shown promising performance in generating realistic images. However, they often struggle in learning complex underlying modalities in a given dataset, resulting in poor-quality generated images. To mitigate this problem, we present a novel approach called mixture of experts GAN (MEGAN), an ensemble approach of multiple generator networks. Each generator network in MEGAN specializes in generating images with a particular subset of modalities, e.g., an image class. Instead of incorporating a separate step of handcrafted clustering of multiple…
Image translation is a burgeoning field in computer vision where the goal is to learn the mapping between an input image and an output image. However, most recent methods require multiple generators for modeling different domain mappings, which are inefficient and ineffective on some multi-domain image translation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel method, SingleGAN, to perform multi-domain image-to-image translations with a single generator. We introduce the domain code to explicitly control the different generative tasks and integrate multiple optimization goals to ensure the translati…
Adversarial examples are intentionally crafted data with the purpose of deceiving neural networks into misclassification. When we talk about strategies to create such examples, we usually refer to perturbation-based methods that fabricate adversarial examples by applying invisible perturbations onto normal data. The resulting data reserve their visual appearance to human observers, yet can be totally unrecognizable to DNN models, which in turn leads to completely misleading predictions. In this paper, however, we consider crafting adversarial examples from existing data as a limitation to exam…
In this paper, we propose a novel abnormal event detection method with spatio-temporal adversarial networks (STAN). We devise a spatio-temporal generator which synthesizes an inter-frame by considering spatio-temporal characteristics with bidirectional ConvLSTM. A proposed spatio-temporal discriminator determines whether an input sequence is real-normal or not with 3D convolutional layers. These two networks are trained in an adversarial way to effectively encode spatio-temporal features of normal patterns. After the learning, the generator and the discriminator can be independently used as de…
We present TIPSy-GAN, a new approach to improve the accuracy and stability in unsupervised adversarial 2D to 3D human pose estimation. In our work we demonstrate that the human kinematic skeleton should not be assumed as a single spatially codependent structure; in fact, we posit when a full 2D pose is provided during training, there is an inherent bias learned where the 3D coordinate of a keypoint is spatially codependent on the 2D coordinates of all other keypoints. To investigate our hypothesis we follow previous adversarial approaches but train two generators on spatially independent parts…

In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-scale Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (MsCGAN), aiming to convert the input conditional person image to a synthetic image of any given target pose, whose appearance and the texture are consistent with the input image. MsCGAN is a multi-scale adversarial network consisting of two generators and two discriminators. In recent years, research on image generation methods has been developing fast. The auto-encoding variational Bayes method (VAEs) was proposed in 2013, which uses variational inference to learn a latent space from the image database and then generates images using the decoder. The generative adversarial networks (GANs) came out as a promising framework, which uses adversarial training to improve the generative ability of the generator. However, the generated pictures by GANs are generally blurry. The deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGANs) were then proposed to leverage the…
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) learn a deep generative model that is able to synthesise novel, high-dimensional data samples. New data samples are synthesised by passing latent samples, drawn from a chosen prior distribution, through the generative model. Once trained, the latent space exhibits interesting properties, that may be useful for down stream tasks such as classification or retrieval. Unfortunately, GANs do not offer an "inverse model", a mapping from data space back to latent space, making it difficult to infer a latent representation for a given data sample. In this paper, …
We propose Unbalanced GANs, which pre-trains the generator of the generative adversarial network (GAN) using variational autoencoder (VAE). We guarantee the stable training of the generator by preventing the faster convergence of the discriminator at early epochs. Furthermore, we balance between the generator and the discriminator at early epochs and thus maintain the stabilized training of GANs. We apply Unbalanced GANs to well known public datasets and find that Unbalanced GANs reduce mode collapses. We also show that Unbalanced GANs outperform ordinary GANs in terms of stabilized learning, …
Given the three dimensional complexity of a video signal, training a robust and diverse GAN based video generative model is onerous due to large stochasticity involved in data space. Learning disentangled representations of the data help to improve robustness and provide control in the sampling process. For video generation, there is a recent progress in this area by considering motion and appearance as orthogonal information and designing architectures that efficiently disentangle them. These approaches rely on handcrafting architectures that impose structural priors on the generator to decom…
In this paper, we propose a generative model, Temporal Generative Adversarial Nets (TGAN), which can learn a semantic representation of unlabeled videos, and is capable of generating videos. Unlike existing Generative Adversarial Nets (GAN)-based methods that generate videos with a single generator consisting of 3D deconvolutional layers, our model exploits two different types of generators: a temporal generator and an image generator. The temporal generator takes a single latent variable as input and outputs a set of latent variables, each of which corresponds to an image frame in a video. Th…

Unlike previous hybrids of autoencoders and adversarial networks, the adversarial game in our approach is set up directly between the encoder and the generator, and no external mappings are trained in the process of learning. The game objective compares the divergences of each of the real and the generated data distributions with the prior distribution in the latent space. …

A popular method for anomaly detection is to use the generator of an adversarial network to formulate anomaly scores over reconstruction loss of input. Due to the rare occurrence of anomalies, optimizing such networks can be a cumbersome task. Another possible approach is to use both generator and discriminator for anomaly detection. In this study, we propose a framework that effectively generates stable results across a wide…

Data-free Knowledge Distillation (DFKD) has attracted attention recently thanks to its appealing capability of transferring knowledge from a teacher network to a student network without using training data. The main idea is to use a generator to synthesize data for training the student. As the generator gets updated, the distribution of synthetic data will change. Such distribution shift could be large if the generator and the student are trained adversarially, causing the student to forget the knowledge it acquired at previous steps. To alleviate this problem, we propose a simple yet effectiv…

Despite the rapid development of adversarial machine learning, most adversarial attack and defense researches mainly focus on the perturbation-based adversarial examples, which is constrained by the input images. In comparison with existing works, we propose non-constrained adversarial examples, which are generated entirely from scratch without any constraint on the input. Unlike perturbation-based attacks, or the so-called unrestricted adversarial attack which is still constrained by the input noise, we aim to learn the distribution of adversarial examples to generate non-constrained but sema…

Those parts are combined by alpha blending process to create a new single image. It can generate, for example, background and face sequentially with two generators, after trainin…
Being able to generate constrained samples is one of the most appealing applications of the deep generators. Conditional generators are one of the successful implementations of such models wherein the created samples are constrained to a specific class. In this work, the application of these networks is extended to regression problems wherein the conditional generator is restrained to any continuous aspect of the data. A new loss function is presented for the regression network and also implementations for generating faces with any particular set of landmarks is provided.

In this work, a new framework is presented to train a deep conditional generator by placing a classifier in parallel with the discriminator and back propagate the classification error through the generator network. The method is versatile and is applicable to any variations of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) implementation, and also gives superior results compared to similar methods.

Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) have shown promise in image generation and semi-supervised learning (SSL). However, existing GANs in SSL have two problems: (1) the generator and the discriminator (i.e. the classifier) may not be optimal at the same time; and (2) the generator cannot control the semantics of the generated samples. The problems essentially arise from the two-player formulation, where a single discriminator shares incompatible roles of identifying fake samples and predicting labels and it only estimates the data without considering the labels. To address the problems, we prese…

When this collapse occurs, the gradient of the discriminator may point in similar directions for many similar points. We hypothesize that some of these shortcomings are in part due to primitive a…
