We introduce a variant of stable logarithmic maps, which we call punctured logarithmic maps. They allow an extension of logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory in which marked points have a negative order of tangency with boundary divisors.
As a main application we develop a gluing formalism which reconstructs stable logarithmic maps and their virtual cycles without expansions of the target, with tropical geometry providing the underlying combinatorics.
Punctured Gromov-Witten invariants also play a pivotal role in the intrinsic construction of mirror partners by the last two authors in arXiv:1909.07649, conjecturally relating to symplectic cohomology, and in the logarithmic gauged linear sigma model in upcoming work of the second author with Felix Janda and Yongbin Ruan.
The evaluation stack for minimal logarithmic stable maps is constructed, parameterizing families of standard log points in the target log scheme. This construction provides the ingredients necessary to define appropriate evaluation maps for minimal log stable maps and establish the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of a log-smooth Deligne- Faltings log scheme.
We prove a virtual localization formula for Bumsig Kim's space of logarithmic stable maps. The formula is closely related and can in fact recover the relative virtual localization formula of Graber and Vakil.
We prove that the moduli space of stable logarithmic maps with fixed numerical invariants, from logarithmic curves to a fixed projective target logarithmic scheme with fine and saturated logarithmic structure, is a proper algebraic stack. This was previously known only with further restrictions on the logarithmic structure of the target.
We introduce a new compactification of the space of relative stable maps. This new method uses logarithmic geoemtry in the sense of Kato-Fontaine-Illusie rather than the expanded degeneration. The underlying structure of our log stable maps is stable in the usual sense.
This is the second in a pair of papers developing a framework to apply logarithmic methods in the study of singular curves of genus $1$. This volume focuses on logarithmic Gromov--Witten theory and tropical geometry. We construct a logarithmically nonsingular moduli space of genus $1$ curves mapping to any toric variety. The space is a birational modification of the principal component of the Abramovich--Chen--Gross--Siebert space of logarithmic stable maps and produces an enumerative genus $1$ curve counting theory. We describe the non-archimedean analytic skeleton of this moduli space and, a…
We make an observation which enables one to deduce the existence of an algebraic stack of log maps for all generalized Deligne--Faltings log structures (in particular simple normal crossings divisor) from the simplest case with log structures given by a Cartier divisor (essentially the smooth divisor case).
The classical clutching and gluing maps between the moduli stacks of stable marked algebraic curves are not logarithmic, i.e. they do not induce morphisms over the category of logarithmic schemes, since they factor through the boundary. Using insight from tropical geometry, we enrich the category of logarithmic schemes to include so-called sub-logarithmic morphisms and show that the clutching and gluing maps are naturally sub-logarithmic. Building on the recent framework developed by Cavalieri, Chan, Wise, and the third author, we further develop a stack-theoretic counterpart of these maps in …
We define a notion of logarithmic stable maps based on Bumsig Kim's construction. Then we prove a degeneration formula under this setting by applying the method develeoped by Dan Abramovich and Barbara Fantechi for transversal maps.
This is the first in a pair of papers developing a framework for the application of logarithmic structures in the study of singular curves of genus $1$. We construct a smooth and proper moduli space dominating the main component of Kontsevich's space of stable genus $1$ maps to projective space. A variation on this theme furnishes a modular interpretation for Vakil and Zinger's famous desingularization of the Kontsevich space of maps in genus $1$. Our methods also lead to smooth and proper moduli spaces of pointed genus $1$ quasimaps to projective space. Finally, we present an application to t…
We give a sufficient condition under which the moduli space of morphisms between logarithmic schemes is quasifinite under the moduli space of morphisms between the underlying schemes. This implies that the moduli space of stable maps from logarithmic curves to a target logarithmic scheme is finite over the moduli space of stable maps, and therefore that it has a projective coarse moduli space when the target is projective.
The logarithmic multiplicative group is a proper group object in logarithmic schemes, which morally compactifies the usual multiplicative group. We study the structure of the stacks of logarithmic maps from rational curves to this logarithmic torus, and show that in most cases, it is a product of the logarithmic torus with the space of rational curves. This gives a conceptual explanation for earlier results on the moduli spaces of logarithmic stable maps to toric varieties.
It is known that the main component of the Kontsevich's moduli space of elliptic stable maps is singular. There are two different desingularizations. One is Vakil-Zinger's desingularization and the other is the moduli space of logarithmic stable maps. When the degree is less then or equal to 3 and the target is $\mathbb{P}^{n}$, we show that the moduli space of logarithmic stable maps can be obtained by blowing up Vakil-Zinger's desingularization.
The goal of this paper is to give a general theory of logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants. This gives a vast generalization of the theory of relative Gromov-Witten invariants introduced by Li-Ruan, Ionel-Parker, and Jun Li, and completes a program first proposed by the second named author in 2002. One considers target spaces X carrying a log structure. Domains of stable log curves are log smooth curves. Algebraicity of the stack of such stable log maps is proven, subject only to the hypothesis that the log structure on X is fine, saturated, and Zariski. A notion of basic stable log map is int…
We introduce the notion of a logarithmic stable map from a minimal log prestable curve to a log twisted semi-stable variety of form $xy=0$. We study the compactification of the moduli spaces of such maps and provide a perfect obstruction theory, applicable to the moduli spaces of (un)ramified stable maps and stable relative maps. As an application, we obtain a modular desingularization of the main component of Kontsevich's moduli space of elliptic stable maps to a projective space.
We introduce the notion of log R-maps, and develop a proper moduli stack of stable log R-maps in the case of a hybrid gauged linear sigma model. Two virtual cycles (canonical and reduced) are constructed for these moduli stacks. The main results are two comparison theorems relating the reduced virtual cycle to the cosection localized virtual cycle, as well as the reduced virtual cycle to the canonical virtual cycle. This sets the foundation of a new technique for computing higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections.
We construct relative Gromov--Witten theory with expanded degenerations in the normal crossings setting and establish a degeneration formula for the resulting invariants. Given a simple normal crossings pair $(X,D)$, we show that there exist proper moduli spaces of curves in $X$ with prescribed boundary conditions along $D$, equipped with virtual classes. Each point in such a moduli space parameterizes a map from a nodal curve to an expanded degeneration of $X$ that is dimensionally transverse to the strata. In the context of maps to a simple normal crossings degeneration, the virtual fundamen…
In this paper, we exhibit a formula relating punctured Gromov-Witten invariants used by Gross and Siebert to 2-point relative/logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants with one point-constraint for any smooth log Calabi-Yau pair $(W,D)$. Denote by $N_{a,b}$ the number of rational curves in $W$ meeting $D$ in two points, one with contact order $a$ and one with contact order $b$ with a point constraint. (Such numbers are defined within relative or logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory). We then apply a modified version of deformation to the normal cone technique and the degeneration formula developed by K…
We study the Berkovich analytification of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps to a toric variety $X$ and present applications to both algebraic and tropical geometry. On algebraic side, insights from tropical geometry give two new geometric descriptions of this space of maps -- (1) as an explicit toroidal modification of $\overline M_{0,n}\times X$ and (2) as a tropical compactification in a toric variety. On the combinatorial side, we prove that the tropicalization of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps coincides with the space of tropical stable maps, giving a large new…
We study the behaviour of rational curves tangent to a hypersurface under degenerations of the hypersurface. Working within the framework of logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory, we extend the degeneration formula to the logarithmically singular setting, producing a virtual class on the space of maps to the degenerate fibre. We then employ logarithmic deformation theory to express this class as an obstruction bundle integral over the moduli space of ordinary stable maps. This produces new refinements of the logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants, encoding the degeneration behaviour of tangent curves…
Morphisms of matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear maps and graph homomorphisms. We introduce the notion of basis for morphisms of matroids, and show that its generating function is strongly log-concave. As a consequence, we obtain a generalization of Mason's conjecture on the $f$-vectors of independent subsets of matroids to arbitrary morphisms of matroids. To establish this, we define multivariate Tutte polynomials of morphisms of matroids, and show that they are Lorentzian in the sense of [BH19] for sufficiently small positive parameters.
We introduce framed formal curves, which are formal algebraic curves with boundary components parametrized by the punctured formal disk. We study the moduli space of nodal framed formal curves, which we endow with a logarithmic structure. We show that this moduli space is a smooth formal logarithmic stack. The remarkable property of our construction is that framed formal curves admit a natural operation of "gluing along the boundary" which works well in families and preserves smoothness (both in a formal and in a logarithmic sense), and this induces gluing maps on the level of moduli. Using mo…
A great number of theoretical results are known about log Gromov-Witten invariants, but few calculations are worked out. In this paper we restrict to surfaces and to genus 0 stable log maps of maximal tangency. We ask how various natural components of the moduli space contribute to the log Gromov-Witten invariants. The first such calculation by Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert deals with multiple covers over rigid curves in the log Calabi-Yau setting. As a natural continuation, in this paper we compute the contributions of non-rigid irreducible curves in the log Calabi-Yau setting and that of the u…
We study an adaptation to the logarithmic case of the Kobayashi-Eisenman pseudo-volume form, or rather an adaptation of its variant defined by Claire Voisin, for which she replaces holomorphic maps by holomorphic K-correspondences. We define an intrinsic logarithmic pseudo-volume form Φ_{X,D} for every pair (X,D) consisting of a complex manifold X and a normal crossing Weil divisor, the positive part of which is reduced. We then prove that Φ_{X,D} is generically non-degenerate when X is projective and K_X+D is ample. This result is analogous to the classical Kobayashi-Ochiai theorem. We also s…
