We examine the relation between the Szekeres models and relativistic Lagrangian perturbation schemes, in particular the Relativistic Zel'dovich Approximation (RZA). We show that the second class of the Szekeres solutions is exactly contained within the RZA when the latter is restricted to an irrotational dust source with a flow-orthogonal foliation of spacetime. In such a case, the solution is governed by the first principal scalar invariant of the deformation field, proving a direct connection with a class of Newtonian three-dimensional solutions without symmetry. For the second class, a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of cosmological backreaction on a scale of homogeneity is expressed through integral constraints. Domains with no backreaction can be smoothly matched, forming a lattice model, where exact deviations average out at a given scale of homogeneity, and the homogeneous and isotropic background is recovered as an average property of the model. Although the connection with the first class of Szekeres solutions is not straightforward, this class allows for the interpretation in terms of a spatial superposition of nonintersecting fluid lines, where each world line evolves independently and under the RZA model equations, but with different associated `local backgrounds'. This points to the possibility of generalizing the Lagrangian perturbation schemes to structure formation models on evolving backgrounds, including global cosmological backreaction.
For the Szekeres system which describes inhomogeneous and anisotropic spacetimes we make use of a point-like Lagrangian, which describes the evolution of the physical variables of the Szekeres model, in order to perform a canonical quantization and to study the quantum potentiality of the Szekeres system in the content of de Broglie--Bohm theory. We revise previous results on the subject and we find that for a specific family of trajectories with initial conditions which satisfy a constraint equation, there exists additional conservation laws for the classical Szekeres system which are used to…
We investigate the existence of inhomogeneous Szekeres spacetimes in Einstein-æther theory. We show that inhomogeneous solutions which can be seen as extension of the Szekeres solutions existing in Einstein-æther gravity only for a specific relation between the dimensionless coefficients which defines the coupling between the æther filed with gravity. The two Szekeres classes of solutions are derived. Also a class of inhomogeneous FLRW-like spacetimes is allowed by the theory for arbitrary values of the dimensionless coefficients of the æther field. The stability of the solutions obtained is p…
We use the Szekeres inhomogeneous cosmological models to study the growth of large-scale structure in the universe including nonzero spatial curvature and a cosmological constant. In particular, we use the Goode and Wainwright formulation, as in this form the models can be considered to represent exact nonlinear perturbations of an averaged background. We identify a density contrast in both classes I and II of the models, for which we derive growth evolution equations. By including Lambda, the time evolution of the density contrast as well as kinematic quantities can be tracked through the mat…
We develop a new nonlinear method to model structure formation in general relativity from a generalization of the relativistic Lagrangian perturbation schemes, controlled by Szekeres (and LTB) exact solutions. The overall approach can be interpreted as the evolution of a deformation field on an inhomogeneous reference model, obeying locally Friedmann-like equations. In the special case of locally one-dimensional deformations, the new model contains the entire Szekeres family of exact solutions. As thus formulated, this approach paraphrases the Newtonian and relativistic Zel'dovich approximatio…
The Newtonian Lagrangian perturbation theory is a widely used framework to study structure formation in cosmology in the nonlinear regime. We review a general-relativistic formulation of such a perturbation approach, emphasizing results on already developed extensive formalism including among other aspects: the non-perturbative modeling of Ricci and Weyl curvatures, gravitational waves and pressure-supported fluids. We discuss subcases of exact solutions related to Szekeres Class II and, as exact average model, Ricci-flat LTB models. This latter forms the basis of a generalization that we then…
The relativistic generalization of the Newtonian Lagrangian perturbation theory is investigated. In previous works, the first-order trace solutions that are generated by the spatially projected gravitoelectric part of the Weyl tensor were given together with extensions and applications for accessing the nonperturbative regime. We furnish here construction rules to obtain from Newtonian solutions the gravitoelectric class of relativistic solutions, for which we give the complete perturbation and solution schemes at any order of the perturbations. By construction, these schemes generalize the co…
We review a system of autonomous differential equations developed in our previous work [1] describing a flat cosmology filled with a barotropic fluid and a scalar field with a modified kinetic term of the form L=F(X)-V(phi). We analyze the critical points and summarize the conditions to obtain scaling solutions. We consider a set of transformations and show that they leave invariant the equations of motion for the systems in which the scaling solution is obtained, allowing to reduce the number of degrees of freedom.
We study the dynamical stability of "tachyacoustic" cosmological models, in which primordial perturbations are generated by a shrinking sound horizon during a period of decelerating expansion. Such models represent a potential alternative to inflationary cosmology, but the phase-space behavior of tachyacoustic solutions has not previously been investigated. We numerically evaluate the dynamics of two non-canonical Lagrangians, a cuscuton-like Lagrangian and a Dirac-Born-Infeld Lagrangian, which generate a scale-invariant spectrum of perturbations. We show that the power-law background solution…
The relativistic generalization of the Newtonian Lagrangian perturbation theory is investigated. In previous works, the perturbation and solution schemes that are generated by the spatially projected gravitoelectric part of the Weyl tensor were given to any order of the perturbations, together with extensions and applications for accessing the nonperturbative regime. We here discuss more in detail the general first-order scheme within the Cartan formalism including and concentrating on the gravitational wave propagation in matter. We provide master equations for all parts of Lagrangian-lineari…
After introducing the Szekeres and Lema\^ıtre--Tolman cosmological models, the real-time cosmology program is briefly mentioned. Then, a few widespread misconceptions about the cosmological models are pointed out and corrected. Investigation of null geodesic equations in the Szekeres models shows that observers in favourable positions would see galaxies drift across the sky at a rate of up to $10^{-6}$ arc seconds per year. Such a drift would be possible to measure using devices that are under construction; the required time of monitoring would be $\approx10$ years. This effect is zero in the …
We extend the general relativistic Lagrangian perturbation theory, recently developed for the formation of cosmic structures in a dust continuum, to the case of model universes containing a single fluid with a single-valued analytic equation of state. Using a coframe-based perturbation approach, we investigate evolution equations for structure formation in pressure-supported irrotational fluids that generate their rest-frame spacetime foliation. We provide master equations to first order for the evolution of the trace and traceless parts of barotropic perturbations that evolve in the perturbed…
Conformally related metrics and Lagrangians are considered in the context of scalar-tensor gravity cosmology. After the discussion of the problem, we pose a lemma in which we show that the field equations of two conformally related Lagrangians are also conformally related if and only if the corresponding Hamiltonian vanishes. Then we prove that to every non-minimally coupled scalar field, we may associate a unique minimally coupled scalar field in a conformally related space with an appropriate potential. The latter result implies that the field equations of a non-minimally coupled scalar fiel…
We present the solution space of the field equations in the Einstein-æther theory for the case of a $FLRW$ and a LRS Bianchi Type $III$ space-time. We also find that there are portions of the initial parameters space for which no solution is admitted by the reduced equations. The reduced Lagrangians deduced from the full action are, in general, correctly describing the dynamics whenever solutions do exist
Field Equations and Conservation Laws Derived from the Generalized Einstein Lagrangian Density for A Gravitational System and Their Implications to Cosmology
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new way to inquire the quantum cosmology for a certain gravitational theory. Normally, the quantum cosmological model is introduced as the minisuperspace theory which is obtained by reducing the superspace where the Wheel-DeWitt equation is defined on using the symmetry provided by cosmological principle. Unlike that, the key of our approach is to reinterpret the cosmology in a classical dynamical way using a point-like Lagrangian and then quantize the point-like model. We apply the method into Einstein gravity, gravity with a cosmological constant a…
We give a Lagrangian formulation for the theory of Rastall of gravitation. After proposing a Lagrangian density that reproduces the equations of motion postulated by Rastall, we study the cosmological consequences and fit the parameters using recent data from Hubble function $H(z).$ According to two model selection criteria, one based on corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) and another on Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), known to penalize models with a greater number of parameters, particularly BIC, we obtain some competitive models relative do $ΛCDM.$ In one of these models the …
We explore the Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) at 1-loop order with Gaussian initial conditions. We present an expansion method to approximately compute the power spectrum in LPT. Our approximate solution has good convergence in the series expansion and enables us to compute the power spectrum in LPT accurately and quickly. Non-linear corrections in the Lagrangian perturbation theory naturally satisfy the law of conservation of mass because the relation between matter density and the displacement vector of dark matter corresponds to the conservation of mass. By matching the 1-loop solutio…
We construct the higher order terms of curvatures in Lagrangians of the scale factor for the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe, which are linear in the second derivative of the scale factor with respect to cosmic time. It is shown that they are composed from the Lovelock tensors at the first step; iterative construction yields arbitrarily high order terms. The relation to the former work on higher order gravity is discussed. Despite the absence of scalar degrees of freedom in cosmological models which come from our Lagrangian, it is shown that an inflationary behavior of the scale f…
In this first paper we present a Lagrangian framework for the description of structure formation in general relativity, restricting attention to irrotational dust matter. As an application we present a self-contained derivation of a general-relativistic analogue of Zel'dovich's approximation for the description of structure formation in cosmology, and compare it with previous suggestions in the literature. This approximation is then investigated: paraphrasing the derivation in the Newtonian framework we provide general-relativistic analogues of the basic system of equations for a single dynami…
Kinematical and dynamical properties of a generic inhomogeneous cosmological model, spatially averaged with respect to free-falling (generalized fundamental) observers, are investigated for the matter model irrotational dust. Paraphrasing a previous Newtonian investigation, we present a relativistic generalization of a backreaction model based on volume-averaging the Relativistic Zeldovich Approximation. In this model we investigate the effect of kinematical backreaction on the evolution of cosmological parameters as they are defined in an averaged inhomogeneous cosmology, and we show that the…
The study of relativistic, higher order and nonlinear effects has become necessary in recent years in the pursuit of precision cosmology. We develop and apply here a framework to study gravitational lensing in exact models in general relativity that are not restricted to homogeneity and isotropy, and where full nonlinearity and relativistic effects are included. We apply the framework to a specific, anisotropic galaxy cluster model which is based on a modified NFW halo density profile and described by the Szekeres metric. We examine the effects of increasing levels of anisotropy in the galaxy …
We consider higher derivative gravity lagrangians in 3 and 4 dimensions, which admit simple c-theorems, including upto six derivative curvature invariants. Following a suggestion by Myers, these lagrangians are restricted such that the fluctuations around (anti) de Sitter spaces have second order linearized equations of motion. We study c-theorems both in the context of AdS/CFT and cosmology. In the context of cosmology, the monotonic function is the entropy defined on the apparent horizon through Wald's formula. Exact black hole solutions which are asymptotically (anti) de Sitter are presente…
At a time when galaxy surveys and other observations are reaching unprecedented sky coverage and precision it seems timely to investigate the effects of general relativistic nonlinear dynamics on the growth of structures and on observations. Analytic inhomogeneous cosmological models are an indispensable way of investigating and understanding these effects in a simplified context. In this paper, we develop exact inhomogeneous solutions of general relativity with pressureless matter (dust, describing cold dark matter) and cosmological constant $Λ$, which can be used to model an arbitrary initia…
Formal analogies between the ordinary differential equations describing geophysical flows and Friedmann cosmology are developed. As a result, one obtains Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of these equations, while laboratory experiments aimed at testing geophysical flows are shown to constitute analogue gravity systems for cosmology.
The Ostrogradsky instability of higher derivative Lagrangians is derived from first principles using Control theory and Lyapunov Stability Analysis. This result is then used to argue that Born-Infeld Lagrangians are viable modifications of the Einstein-Hilbert action provided the action is varied in accordance with the Palatini formalism, in contrast to the metric formalism. Finally, the Born-Infeld version of the FRW equations are derived and the cosmological dynamics is studied for matter dominated closed and open universes, and the results are compared with the usual cosmology.
We investigate the late-time cosmological behaviour of scalar-tensor theories with a universal multiplicative coupling between the scalar field and the matter Lagrangian in the matter era. This class of theory encompasses the case of the massless string dilaton (see Damour and Polyakov, General Relativity and Gravitation, 26, 1171) as well as a theory with an intrinsic decoupling mechanism in the solar system (see Minazzoli and Hees, Phys. Rev. D 88, 041504). The cosmological evolution is studied in the General Relativity limit justified by solar system constraints on the gravitation theory. T…
In the framework of $f(T)$-gravity theory, classical and quantum cosmology has been studied in the present work for FLRW space-time model. The Noether symmetry, a point-like symmetry of the Lagrangian is used to the physical system and a specific functional form of $f(T)$ is determined. A point transformation in the 2D augmented space restricts one of the variable to be cyclic so that the Lagrangian as well as the field equations are simplified so that they are solvable. Lastly for quantum cosmology, the WD equation is constructed and possible solution has been evaluated.
We study the bounce and cyclicity realization in the framework of new gravitational scalar-tensor theories. In these theories the Lagrangian contains the Ricci scalar and its first and second derivatives, in a specific combination that makes them free of ghosts, and transformed into the Einstein frame they are proved to be a subclass of bi-scalar extensions of general relativity. We present analytical expressions for the bounce requirements, and we examine the necessary qualitative behavior of the involved functions that can give rise to a given scale factor. Having in mind these qualitative f…
Gauge invariance of scalar perturbations is studied together with the associated equations of motion. Extending methods developed in the framework of hamiltonian General Relativity, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is investigated into the details in Loop Quantum Cosmology. The gauge-invariant observables are built and their equations of motions are reviewed both in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian approaches. This method is applied to scalar perturbations with either holonomy or inverse-volume corrections.
The paper deals with phantom scalar field cosmology in Einstein gravity. At first using Lie symmetry, the coupling function to the kinetic term and the potential function of the scalar field and the equation of state parameter of the matter field are determined and a simple solution is obtained. Subsequently, Noether symmetry is imposed on the Lagrangian of the system. The symmetry vector is obtained and the potential takes a very general form from which potential using Lie Symmetry can be obtained as a particular case. Then we choose a point transformation $(a,ϕ)\rightarrow(u,v)$ such that on…
In this paper we exploit dynamics of a $k-$essence scalar field to realise interactions between dark components of universe resulting in a evolution consistent with observed features of late time phase of cosmic evolution. Stress energy tensor corresponding to a $k-$essence Lagrangian $L=V( ϕ)F(X)$ (where $X=\frac{1}{2}g^{μν}\nabla_μϕ\nabla_νϕ$) is shown to be equivalent to an ideal fluid with two components having same equation of state. Stress energy tensor of one of the components may be generated from a constant potential $k-$essence Lagrangian of form $L_1=V_0F(X)$ ($V_0$ constant) and th…
We develop several formal analogies between the logistic equation and the spatially homogeneous and isotropic relativistic cosmology described by the Einstein-Friedmann equations. These analogies produce an effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian and new symmetries for the logistic equation.
We study perturbations around some cosmological backgrounds in the dRGT theory of massive gravity. We develop a general formalism to calculate the perturbations around any background. We derive the Lagrangian for fluctuations in the small scale limit, and for the open FRW solution we repeat the analysis around the full background. We find that the perturbations display similar properties: the longitudinal modes of the massive graviton are instantaneous at quadratic level, but they acquire a time-kinetic term at cubic order.
In this work we present a generalized Brans-Dicke lagrangian including a non-minimally coupled Gauss-Bonnet term without imposing the vanishing torsion condition. In the resulting field equations, the torsion is closely related to the dynamics of the scalar field, i.e., if non-minimally coupled terms are present in the theory, then the torsion must be present. For the studied lagrangian we analyze the cosmological consequences of an effective torsional fluid and we show that this fluid can be responsible for the current acceleration of the universe. Finally, we perform a detailed dynamical sys…
We discuss a field-theoretical approach based on variational principle to derive the field and hydrodynamic equations of motion of baryonic matter governed by cosmological perturbations of dark matter and dark energy. The action depends on the gravitational and matter Lagrangian. The gravitational Lagrangian depends on the metric tensor and its first and second derivatives. The matter Lagrangian includes dark matter, dark energy and the ordinary baryonic matter. The total Lagrangian is expanded in an asymptotic Taylor series around the background manifold defined as a solution of Einstein's eq…
A new class of modified gravity theories with a healthy higher order derivative terms of a function of the matter Lagrangian $f(L_m)$ is considered. Generally the energy momentum tensor is not conserved, leading to the fifth force similar to $f(R,T)$ theories. We will however show that in the FRW background there exists two possibilities corresponding to conservative and non-conservative cases. Cosmological implications of both cases with different functions of the matter Lagrangian $f$ will be investigated in details and we will show that current observational data can be satisfied in this mo…
We formulate the Lagrangian of the Newtonian cosmology where the cosmological constant is also introduced. Following the affine quantization procedure, the Hamiltonian operator is derived. The wave functions of the Newtonian universe and the corresponding eigenvalues for the case of matter dominated by a negative cosmological constant are given.
A general approach to find out exact cosmological solutions in f(R)-gravity is discussed. Instead of taking into account phenomenological models, we assume, as a physical criterium, the existence of Noether symmetries in the cosmological f(R) Lagrangian. As a result, the presence of such symmetries selects viable models and allow to solve the equations of motion. We discuss also the case in which no Noether charge is present but general criteria can be used to achieve solutions.
We investigate the cosmology of SO(3)-invariant massive gravity with 5 degrees of freedom. In contrast with previous studies, we allow for a non-trivial fiducial metric, which can be justified by invoking, for example, a dilaton-like global symmetry. We write the homogeneous and isotropic equations of motion in this more general setup and identify, in particular, de Sitter solutions. We then study the linear perturbations around the homogeneous cosmological solutions, by deriving the quadratic Lagrangian governing the dynamics of scalar, vector and tensor modes. We thus obtain the conditions f…
We consider the two scalar field cosmology in a FRW spatially flat spacetime where the scalar fields interact both in the kinetic part and the potential. We apply the Noether point symmetries in order to define the interaction of the scalar fields. We use the point symmetries in order to write the field equations in the normal coordinates and we find that the Lagrangian of the field equations which admits at least three Noether point symmetries describes linear Newtonian systems. Furthermore, by using the corresponding conservation laws we find exact solutions of the field equations. Finally, …
