Analogies between logistic equation and relativistic cosmology

We develop several formal analogies between the logistic equation and the spatially homogeneous and isotropic relativistic cosmology described by the Einstein-Friedmann equations. These analogies produce an effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian and new symmetries for the logistic equation.

Cosmological analogies for geophysical flows, Lagrangians, and new analogue gravity systems

Formal analogies between the ordinary differential equations describing geophysical flows and Friedmann cosmology are developed. As a result, one obtains Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of these equations, while laboratory experiments aimed at testing geophysical flows are shown to constitute analogue gravity systems for cosmology.

Cosmological analogies, Lagrangians, and symmetries for convective-radiative heat transfer

A formal analogy between the Friedmann equation of relativistic cosmology and models of convective-radiative cooling/heating of a body (including Newton's, Dulong-Petit's, Newton-Stefan's laws, and a generalization) is discussed. The analogy highlights Lagrangians, symmetries, and mathematical properties of the solutions of these cooling laws.

Generalized Fibonacci numbers, cosmological analogies, and an invariant

Continuous generalizations of the Fibonacci sequence satisfy ODEs that are formal analogues of the Friedmann equation describing spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmology in general relativity. These analogies are presented, together with their Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations and with an invariant of the Fibonacci sequence.

Turning a Newtonian analogy for FLRW cosmology into a relativistic problem

A Newtonian uniform ball expanding in empty space constitutes a common heuristic analogy for FLRW cosmology. We discuss possible implementations of the corresponding general-relativistic problem and a variety of new cosmological analogies arising from them. We highlight essential ingredients of the Newtonian analogy, including that the quasilocal energy is always `Newtonian' in the sense that the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor does not contribute to it. A symmetry of the Einstein-Friedmann equations produces another one in the original Newtonian system.

The Schrodinger picture of standard cosmology

We consider a time independent Schrodinger type equation derived from the equations of motion that drives a single scalar field in a standard cosmology model for inflation in a flat space-time with a Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric with a cosmological constant. We find that all the 1-dimensional bound state solutions of quantum mechanics lead to at least one exact solution for the dynamical equations of standard cosmology, and that these solutions resemble the most recurrent inflationary solutions found in the literature. Analogues of glacial valley profiles in particle mechanics and in cosmology

An ordinary differential equation describing the transverse profiles of U-shaped glacial valleys, derived with a variational principle, has two formal analogies which we analyze. First, an analogy with point particle mechanics completes the description of the solutions. Second, an analogy with the Friedmann equation of relativistic cosmology shows that the analogue of a glacial valley profile is a universe with a future singularity but respecting the weak energy condition. The equation unveils also a Big Freeze singularity, which was not observed before for positive curvature index.

Cosmology and the Korteweg-de Vries Equation

The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is a non-linear wave equation that has played a fundamental role in diverse branches of mathematical and theoretical physics. In the present paper, we consider its significance to cosmology.
