In this paper, a broadband tunable polarization converter based on graphene metasurfaces is proposed. This polarization converter works in the terahertz (THz) frequency region, using the advantage of graphene characteristics to have a tunable frequency response. The designed graphene-shaped periodic structure on top of the substrate is utilized to convert the incident wave polarization to the desired target in a flexible operational band in the THz frequencies. The polarization conversion ratio is more than 0.85 in a wide range of frequencies in the THz band from 4.86 to 8.42 THz (the fractional bandwidth is 54%). The proposed polarization converter is insensitive to the angle of the incident wave up to 40°. Using graphene provides a tunable frequency response without changing the geometry of the designed structure.
Dynamic polarization control of light is essential for numerous applications ranging from enhanced imaging to materials characterization and identification. We present a reconfigurable terahertz metasurface quarter-waveplate consisting of electromechanically actuated micro-cantilever arrays. Our anisotropic metasurface enables tunable polarization conversion cantilever actuation. Specifically, voltage-based actuation provides mode selective control of the resonance frequency, enabling real-time tuning of the polarization state of the transmitted light. The polarization tunable metasurface has …
This paper proposes a flexible broadband linear polarization converter based on metasurface operating at microwave band. In order to achieve bandwidth extension property, long and short metallic arc wires, as well as the metallic disks placed over a ground plane, are combined into the polarizer, which can generate three neighboring resonances. Due to the combination of the first two resonances and optimized size and thickness of the unit cell, the polarization converter can have a weak incident angle dependence. Both simulated and measured results confirm that the average polarization conversi…
In this work, we theoretically and experimentally study the conversion from a circularly polarized plane electromagnetic wave into a linearly polarized transmitted one using anisotropic self-complementary metasurfaces. For this purpose, a metasurface design operable at sub-terahertz frequencies is proposed and investigated in the range of 230-540 GHz. The metasurface is composed of alternating complementary rectangular patches and apertures patterned in an aluminum layer deposited on a thin polypropylene film. The term \textit{self-complementary} implies that the pattern is invariant with resp…
We report the polarization-dependent electromagnetic response from a series of novel terahertz (THz) metasurfaces where asymmetry is introduced through the displacement of two adjacent metallic arms separated by a distance $δ$. For all polarization states, the symmetric metasurface exhibits a low quality (Q) factor fundamental dipole mode. By breaking the symmetry, we experimentally observe a secondary dipole-like mode with a Q factor nearly $9\times$ higher than the fundamental resonance. As $δ$ increases, the fundamental dipole mode $f_{1}$ redshifts and the secondary mode $f_{2}$ blueshifts…

They have opened up unprecedented exciting opportunities for extraordinary wave engineering processes. On the other hand, frequency converters have drawn wide attention due to their vital applications in telecommunication systems, health care devices, radio astronomy, military radars and biological sensing systems. Here, we show that a spurious-free and linear frequency converter metasurface can be realized by leveraging unique properties of engineered trans…
Spoof surface plasmon meta-couplers are compact antennas which link propagating waves and surface waves. However, most of them are designed with a fixed phase gradient and channel for the incident waves with specific polarization, which limits their further applications in multichannel scenarios. In this Letter, we propose, to the best of our knowledge, a new method that combines the Brillouin folds theory with the Generalized Snell Law. We demonstrate that when the phase gradient of the metasurface is large enough, Brillouin folds effect will occur, which will create dual phase gradient space…
We demonstrate a classical analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a highly flexible planar terahertz metamaterial (MM) comprised of three-gap split ring resonators. The keys to achieve EIT in this system are the frequency detuning and hybridization processes between two bright modes coexisting in the same unit cell as opposed to bright-dark modes. We present experimental verification of two-bright mode coupling for a terahertz EIT-MM in the context of numerical results and theoretical analysis based on a coupled Lorentz oscillator model. In addition, a hybrid variation o…
Dynamically switchable half-/quarter-wave plates have recently been the focus in the terahertz regime. Conventional design philosophy leads to multilayer metamaterials or narrowband metasurfaces. Here we propose a novel design philosophy and a VO2-metal hybrid metasurface for achieving broadband dynamically switchable half-/quarter-wave plate (HWP/QWP) based on the transition from the overdamped to the underdamped resonance. Results show that, by varying the VO2 conductivity by three orders of magnitude, the proposed metasurface's function can be switched between an HWP with polarization conve…
A simple but efficient approach for the synthesis of transmission-type wideband polarization converters is presented. The proposed configuration comprises multilayer metasurfaces including resonant particles which are progressively rotated layer by layer. The progressive rotation of the particles allows for a polarization conversion over a large frequency band. The polarizing structure is efficiently designed and optimized through a transmission line model approach handling the cascade of anisotropic impedance layers and dielectrics. An optimized 8-layers design based on gradually rotated dipo…
Using metasurfaces to control the wave propagation at will has been very successful over the broad electromagnetic spectrum in recent years. By encoding specially designed abrupt changes of electromagnetic parameters into metasurfaces, such as phase and amplitude, nearly arbitrary control over the output wavefronts could be realized. Constituted by a single- or fewlayer of planar structures, metasurfaces are straightforward in design and fabrication, thus promising many realistic applications. Moreover, such control concept can be further extended to the surface wave regime. In this review, we…
To enhance transmission efficiency of Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase metasurfaces, multilayer split-ring resonators were proposed to develop encoding sequences. As per the generalized Snell law, the deflection angle of the PB phase encoding metasurfaces depends on the metasurface period size. Therefore, it is impossible to design an infinitesimal metasurface unit.Consequently, the continuous transmission scattering angle cannot be obtained. In digital signal processing, this study introduces the Fourier convolution principle on encoding metasurface sequences to freely control the transmitted sc…
Fingerprint spectral response of several materials with terahertz electromagnetic radiation indicates that terahertz technology is an effective tool for sensing applications. However, sensing few nanometer thin-film of dielectrics with much longer terahertz waves (1 THz = 0.3 mm) is challenging. Here, we demonstrate a quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) resonance for sensing of nanometer scale thin analyte deposited on a flexible metasurface. The large sensitivity originates from strong local field confinement of the quasi-BIC Fano resonance state and extremely low absorption loss of a lo…
Metasurfaces are an enabling technology for complex wave manipulation functions, including in the terahertz frequency range, where they are expected to advance security, imaging, sensing, and communications technology. For operation in transmission, Huygens' metasurfaces are commonly used, since their good impedance match to the surrounding media minimizes reflections and maximizes transmission. Recent theoretical work has shown that Huygens' metasurfaces are non-optimal, particularly for large angles of refraction, and that to eliminate reflections and spurious diffracted beams it is necessar…

For this purpose, we utilize anisotropically deformed checkerboard structures, which present broadband characteristics compatible with deep modulation. Moreover, the metasurface is integrated with a current injection circuit to achieve state switching; this injection circuit can also be employed to monitor the electric state of vanadium dioxide. We estimate the Stokes parameters derived from the experimental transmission spectra of the fabricated m…
We report a THz reflectarray metasurface which uses graphene as active element to achieve beam steering, shaping and broadband phase modulation. This is based on the creation of a voltage controlled reconfigurable phase hologram, which can impart different reflection angles and phases to an incident beam, replacing bulky and fragile rotating mirrors used for terahertz imaging. This can also find applications in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, paving the way to versatile optical devices including light radars, adaptive optics, electro-optical modulators and screens.
The incorporation of materials with controllable electromagnetic constitutive parameters allows the conceptualization and realization of controllable metasurfaces. With the aim of formulating and investigating a tricontrollable metasurface for efficiently absorbing terahertz radiation, we adopted a pixel-based approach in which the meta-atoms are biperiodic assemblies of discrete pixels. We patched some pixels with indium antimonide (InSb) and some with graphene, leaving the others unpatched. The bottom of each meta-atom was taken to comprise a metal-backed substrate of silicon nitride. The In…
Metasurfaces, the two-dimensional counterpart of metamaterials, have caught great attention thanks to their powerful capabilities on manipulation of electromagnetic waves. Recent times have seen the emergence of a variety of metasurfaces exhibiting not only countless functionalities, but also a reconfigurable response. Additionally, digital or coding metasurfaces have revolutionized the field by describing the device as a matrix of discrete building block states, thus drawing clear parallelisms with information theory and opening new ways to model, compose, and (re)program advanced metasurface…
The conventional lens's tunability drawback always restricts their application compared to the metasurface lens (metalens). On the other side, reconfigurable metalenses offer the benefits of ultrathin thickness and capable of tunability. Therefore achieving reconfigurable functionalities in a single metasurface has attracted significant research interest for potential terahertz (THz) applications. In this paper, an adjustable metasurface is presented using Vanadium dioxide (VO2) to manipulate the electromagnetic waves and provide the full reflection phase. The phase-change metasurface is compo…
The next generation of wireless networks is expected to tap into the terahertz (0.1--10 THz) band to satisfy the extreme latency and bandwidth density requirements of future applications. However, the development of systems in this band is challenging as THz waves confront severe spreading and penetration losses, as well as molecular absorption, which leads to strong line-of-sight requirements through highly directive antennas. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been proposed to address issues derived from non-line-of-sight propagation, among other impairments, by redire…
The two-phonon scheme of generation of terahertz (THz) photons by gold nanobars (GNBs) is considered. It is shown that in GNBs, by choosing their sizes, it is possible to provide conditions for converting the energy of longitudinal phonons with THz frequencies into the energy of THz photons. The prospects of designing GNBs-based soft THz radiation sources (frequencies: 0.14; 0.24; 0.41 and 0.70 THz) with a large flow cross-section (diameter ~40 cm) intended for detection of hidden objects under clothing to ensure security in public places (airports, railway stations, stadiums, etc.) are assess…
It is well established that nearly all high-quality (Q) Fano-like resonances in terahertz (THz) metasurfaces broaden as asymmetry increases, resulting in a decline of Q-factor and an increase in the resonance intensity. Therefore, in order to determine the optimal design for applications in THz sensing, a Figure of Merit (FoM) is required. Previous studies have identified the asymmetry regimes at which the peak FoM occurs for various, specific unit cell geometries. However to date, there is no systematic comparison of the resulting FoMs for common and novel geometries. Here, a THz planar metaf…
Metasurfaces are engineered thin surfaces comprising two dimensional (2D) arrays of sub-wavelength spaced and sub-wavelength sized resonators. Metasurfaces can locally manipulate the amplitude, phase and polarization of light with high spatial resolution. In this study, we report numerical and experimental results of a vortex-beam-generating metasurface fabricated specifically for infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) wavelengths. The designed metasurface consisted of a 2D array of dielectric cross-shaped resonators with spatially varying length, thereby providing desired spatially varying phase s…
Hyperbolic metasurfaces have gained significant attention due to their extraordinary electromagnetic properties to control propagating plane waves, but the excitation and propagation of the surface plasmon-polaritons at hyperbolic metasurfaces, called hyperbolic plasmons, have been experimentally observed just recently. However, the advantages of the hyperbolic plasmons, such as hybrid TE-TM polarization discussed below, are not yet fully revealed and analyzed. In this paper we focus on the numerical and experimental characterization of surface waves in the frequency range from 2 to 8 GHz supp…
A circularly polarized leaky-wave antenna capable of frequency scanning is proposed in this paper. The main objective is to achieve high gain and polarization purity without the need for a complex feed network. The antenna consists of two independent modules: (1) Anisotropic modulated metasurface antenna (MoMetA) for generating vertically polarized radiation with an operational scanning range of 19 to 47 degrees in elevation; (2) Wide-band polarization converter with high angular stability and capable of converting vertically linear polarization into circular polarization (CP). Aperture field …
In this paper, a wideband and low-scattering metasurface in terahertz (THz) is introduced. The proposed coding metasurface is composed of four different graphene square patches in one layer, which has a distinct bias voltage. By optimizing the chemical potential of each patch, the reflection phase and amplitude of a designed element can be controlled in a real-time manner. The chemical potential optimizing approach is a promising method to develop metasurfaces, which can tune the reflection phase, magnitude, or polarization dynamically at different frequencies spectrum. Indeed, by adjusting th…
Nonlinear metasurfaces offer new paradigm for boosting optical effect beyond limitations of conventional materials. In this work, we present an alternative way to produce pronounced third-harmonic generation (THG) based on nonlinear field resonances rather than linear field enhancement, which is a typical strategy for achieving strong nonlinear response. By designing and studying a nonlinear plasmonic-graphene metasurface at terahertz regime with hybrid guided modes and bound states in the continuum modes, it is found that a THG with a narrow bandwidth can be observed, thanks to the strong res…
Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSM), such as Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Na$_3$Bi, exhibits strong optical dichroism with contrasting dielectric permittivity along different crystal axes. However, such optical dichroism is often overlooked in the study of TDSM-based optoelectronic devices, and whether such optical dichroism can lead to unique functionalities not found under the isotropic approximation remain an open question thus far. Here we show that the optical dischroism in TDSM lead to starkly different terahertz (THz) responses and device performance as compared to the isotropic case. Using finite-…
One of the most promising metasurface architectures for the microwave and terahertz frequency ranges consists of three patterned metallic layers separated by dielectrics. Such metasurfaces are well suited to planar fabrication techniques and their synthesis is facilitated by modelling them as impedance sheets separated by transmission lines. We show that this model can be significantly inaccurate in some cases, due to near-field coupling between metallic layers. This problem is particularly severe for higher frequency designs, where fabrication tolerances prevent the patterns from being highly…
We present an asymmetric bifacial graphene metasurface to realize tunable and broadband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The proposed design is composed of two dissimilar graphene square patch metasurfaces stacked over an ultrathin dielectric substrate. Nonlinear CPA performance without resorting to optical nonlinearities and amplification are demonstrated based on wave interference phenomena taking place along and inside this subwavelength structure. Broadband asymmetric reflection from opposite directions is obtained in the case of single wave illumination. T…

We explore the unusual non-reciprocal and diffraction-less properties of surface plasmon polaritons propagating in drift-biased graphene-based metasurfaces. We show that applying a drift-current on a graphene sheet leads to extremely asymmetric in-plane modal dispersions from terahertz to infrared frequencies, associated with plasmons with low-loss (high-loss and ultra-high confinement) traveling along (against) the bias. Strikingly, truly unidirectional wave propagation is prevented by the intrinsic nonlocal response of a graphene, a mechanism that shapes the energy flow over the surface. We …

The ability to control waves at the nanoscale has attracted considerable attention to ultrathin metasurface lenses (metalenses) in optical imaging and encryption systems. We propose an approach to active tuning metasurfaces by integrating an ultrathin layer of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) into a unit cell as an electro-optically tunable material. A proposed design features two orthogonal wings that can independently manipulate waves with corresponding orthogonal polarizations. The charge carrier concentration in the ITO accumulation layer is altered by modulating the applied bias voltage. This bias …
In this work, we investigated a simple structured graphene terahertz (THz) metasurface (MSF) with perfect absorption, wideband, polarization insensitive, oblique incidence insensitive and frequency reconfiguration. The graphene MSF structure is composed of a two-dimensional periodic array of graphene meta-atoms deposited on the silicon substrate terminated by a metal ground plane. The performance of the proposed MSF is numerically analyzed. An equivalent circuit model of the structure and its closed-form solution is introduced. The graphene MSF thin structure at 2.5 THz provides 100% of absorp…
As we read this text, our eyes dynamically adjust the focal length to keep the line image in focus on the retina. Similarly, in many optics applications the focal length must be dynamically tunable. In the quest for compactness and tunability, flat lenses based on metasurfaces were introduced. However, their dynamic tunability is still limited because their functionality mostly relies upon fixed geometry. In contrast, we put forward an original concept of a tunable Optical Magnetic Lens (OML) that focuses photon beams using a subwavelength-thin layer of a magneto-optical material in a non-unif…
Recently, metalenses which consist of metasurface arrays, have attracted attention due to their more condensed size in comparison with conventional lenses. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable coding metasurface hybridized with vanadium dioxide (VO2) for wavefront manipulation at terahertz (THz) frequencies. At room temperature, the unit-cell can reflect as a "1" bit under linearly y polarized illuminated waves. Besides, when the temperature is increased, VO2 would be in a fully metallic state; therefore, unit-cell can act as a "0" reflection phase. Furthermore, by changing the unit-cell…
