As we read this text, our eyes dynamically adjust the focal length to keep the line image in focus on the retina. Similarly, in many optics applications the focal length must be dynamically tunable. In the quest for compactness and tunability, flat lenses based on metasurfaces were introduced. However, their dynamic tunability is still limited because their functionality mostly relies upon fixed geometry. In contrast, we put forward an original concept of a tunable Optical Magnetic Lens (OML) that focuses photon beams using a subwavelength-thin layer of a magneto-optical material in a non-uniform magnetic field. We applied the OML concept to a wide range of materials and found out that the effect of OML is present in a broad frequency range from microwaves to visible light. For terahertz light, OML can allow 50% relative tunability of the focal length on the picosecond time scale, which is of practical interest for ultrafast shaping of electron beams in microscopy. The OML based on magneto-optical natural bulk and 2D materials may find broad use in technologies such as 3D optical microscopy and acceleration of charged particle beams by THz beams.
Recently, phase-change materials (PCMs) have drawn more attention due to the dynamically tunable optical properties. Here, we investigate the active control of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue based on terahertz (THz) metamaterials integrated with vanadium oxide (VO2). Utilizing the insulator-to-metal transition of VO2, the amplitude of EIT peak can be actively modulated with a significant modulation depth. Meanwhile the group delay within the transparent window can also be dynamically tuned, achieving the active control of slow light effect. Furthermore, we also introdu…
We theoretically and numerically demonstrate an actively tunable slow light in a hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial in the terahertz (THz) regime. In the unit cell, the near field coupling between the metallic elements including the bright cut wire resonator and the dark double split-ring resonator gives rises to a pronounced transmission peak. By positioning a monolayer graphene under the dark mode resonator, an active modulation of the near field coupling is achieved via shifting the Fermi level of graphene. The physical origin can be attributed to the variation in the damping rate of the da…
We present an extended study concerning the dynamics of dense and harmonic coherent regimes in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) in a Fabry--Perot (FP) configuration emitting in the terahertz (THz) spectral region. Firstly, we study the device in free running operation, reproducing the main features of the self-generated of optical frequency combs (OFCs) and harmonic frequency combs (HFCs) in this spectral range, commenting on the points of difference from the mid-infrared region, and finding excellent agreement with the most recent experimental evidences. Then, we analyze the THz-QCL dynamics und…
The conventional lens's tunability drawback always restricts their application compared to the metasurface lens (metalens). On the other side, reconfigurable metalenses offer the benefits of ultrathin thickness and capable of tunability. Therefore achieving reconfigurable functionalities in a single metasurface has attracted significant research interest for potential terahertz (THz) applications. In this paper, an adjustable metasurface is presented using Vanadium dioxide (VO2) to manipulate the electromagnetic waves and provide the full reflection phase. The phase-change metasurface is compo…
Conventional optical components shape the wavefront of propagating light by adjusting the optical path length, which requires the use of rather thick lenses, especially for the adjustment of terahertz (THz) radiation due to its long wavelength. Two ultrathin THz planar lenses were designed and fabricated based on interface phase modulation of antenna resonance. The lens thicknesses were extremely reduced to 100 nm, which is only 1/4000th of the illuminating light wavelength. The focusing and imaging functions of the lenses were experimentally demonstrated. The ultrathin optical components desc…
Arising from modulation instability, Turing rolls in optical Kerr microresonators have been used in the generation of optical frequency combs and the synthesis of microwave and terahertz frequencies. In this work, by applying electro-optic modulation on terahertz-frequency Turing rolls, we implement electro-optic frequency division with a microcomb to synthesize variable low-noise microwave signals. We also actively stabilize the terahertz oscillations to a microwave reference via intracavity power modulation, obtaining fractional frequency instabilities that are better than those of the free-…
Fano resonance is widely discussed in designing novel terahertz components, such as sensors, filters, modulators, and group delay modules. Usually, high quality (Q) factor and flexible tunability of Fano resonance are key requirements for these applications. Here, we present tunable terahertz Fano resonance with a Q factor of 2095 at 0.439 THz in coupled terahertz whispering-gallery-mode resonators (WGMRs). Coupling between a relatively low Q (578) quartz ring and a high Q (2095) silicon ring is employed to generate the Fano resonance. The resonant frequency of the Fano resonance can be active…
A type of tunable plasmonic lens with nanoslits is proposed for subwavelength imaging in the far field at different wavelengths. The nanoslits array in the plasmonic lens, which have constant depths but varying widths, could generate desired optical phase retardations based on the particular propagation property of the Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) in the metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) slit waveguides. We theoretically and numerically demonstrate the tunability of a single plasmonic lens for subwavelength imaging (full width at half maximum, 0.37 ~0.47) by adjusting the surrounding dielectri…
All-dielectric metamaterials composed of high index and low loss dielectric resonators have become a promising way for high-efficient optical devices. However, fabricating terahertz all-dielectric metamaterials and actively tuning their properties still remain challenges. In this paper, an effective method has been developed to prepare high-quality microspheres based all-dielectric metamaterial operating in terahertz (THz) range. Then, we propose a magnetically tunable THz all-dielectric metamaterial based on liquid crystal (LC). The all-dielectric metamaterial is immersed into LC and tuned by…
Fibonacci or bifocal terahertz (THz) imaging is demonstrated experimentally employing silicon diffractive zone plate (SDZP) in a continuous wave mode. Images simultaneously recorded in two different planes are exhibited at 0.6 THz frequency with the spatial resolution of wavelength. Multi-focus imaging operation of the Fibonacci lens is compared with a performance of the conventional silicon phase zone plate. Spatial profiles and focal depth features are discussed varying the frequency from 0.3 THz to 0.6 THz. Good agreement between experimental results and simulation data is revealed.
Due to the non-ionizing property, researchers have chosen to investigate terahertz radiation (THz) Imaging instrumentation for Bio-Sensing applications. The present work is to design and fabricate a near field lens that can focus guided terahertz radiation to a microscopic region for the detection of cancer-affected cells in Biological tissue. Operational characteristics such as field of view, optical loss factor, and hydrophobicity must be included to achieve an effective design of the lens.
We demonstrate the rapid readout of terahertz (THz) orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams using an atomic-vapour based imaging technique. OAM modes with both azimuthal and radial indices are created using phase-only transmission plates. The beams undergo terahertz to optical conversion in an atomic vapour, before being imaged in the far field using an optical CCD camera. In addition to the spatial intensity profile, we also observe the self-interferogram of the beams by imaging through a tilted lens, allowing the sign and magnitude of the azimuthal index to be read out directly. Using this tech…
Photonic crystals and metamaterials have emerged as two classes of tailorable materials that enable precise control of light. Plasmonic crystals, which can be thought of as photonic crystals fabricated from plasmonic materials, Bragg scatter incident electromagnetic waves from a repeated unit cell. However, plasmonic crystals, like metamaterials, are composed of subwavelength unit cells. Here, we study terahertz plasmonic crystals of several periods in a two dimensional electron gas. This plasmonic medium is both extremely subwavelength ($\approx λ/100$) and reconfigurable through the applicat…
We propose a surface plasmon-polariton based nano-rod array lens structure that incorporates two additional lateral input channels, with the ability to control the focal length and the deflection of the transmitted beam through the lens actively by the intensity of the channel sources. We demonstrate by numerical simulations that, applying the sources with the same intensity can change the focal point and the beam waist, whereas unequal intensities generate an asymmetric field profile in the nano-rod array inducing an off-axis beam deflection.
Free space delay lines provide pulses of variable time spacing for optical experiments such as pump-probe spectroscopy and coherent quantum control, including spin and photon echo techniques. However, in the terahertz (THz) region of the spectrum, beam divergence due to diffraction limits the useful length of traditional free space delay lines. We present a novel double-folded variable delay line for light in the frequency range 0.24-1.2 THz, which incorporates a symmetric arrangement of lenses whose spacing can be adjusted to compensate for diffraction at each delay. Scalable for use in other…
Recent interest in developing fast spintronic devices and laser-controllable magnetic solids has sparked tremendous experimental and theoretical efforts to understand and manipulate ultrafast dynamics in materials. Studies of spin dynamics in the terahertz (THz) frequency range are particularly important for elucidating microscopic pathways toward novel device functionalities. Here, we review THz phenomena related to spin dynamics in rare-earth orthoferrites, a class of materials promising for antiferromagnetic spintronics. We expand this topic into a description of four key elements. (1) We s…
Materials with a negative dielectric permittivity (e.g. metals) display high reflectance and can be shaped into nanoscale optical-resonators exhibiting extreme mode confinement, a central theme of nanophotonics. However, the ability to $actively$ tune these effects remains elusive. By photoexciting free carriers in 4H-SiC, we induce dramatic changes in reflectance near the "Reststrahlen band" where the permittivity is negative due to charge oscillations of the polar optical phonons in the mid-infrared. We infer carrier-induced changes in the permittivity required for useful tunability (~ 40 cm…
We present a stable dual-wavelength vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) with two spectral peaks separated by a few terahertz in diode-pumped Yb:CaGdAlO4 (CALGO) laser. The dual-wavelength spectrum is controlled by the pump power and off-axis loss in laser resonator, arising from the broad emission bandwidth of Yb:CALGO. The OAM beam is obtained by a pair of cylindrical lens that serves as an π/2 convertor for the high-order Hermite-Gaussian modes. The stability is verifed that the 1 h OAM beam with two spectral peaks at 1046.1 nm and 1057.2 nm (3.01 THz interval) can steadily o…
