F type stars are characterised by several physical processes such as different pulsation mechanisms, rotation, convection, diffusion, and magnetic fields. The rapidly rotating delta Scuti star beta Cas can be considered as a benchmark star to study the interaction of several of these effects. We investigate the pulsational and magnetic field properties of beta Cas. We also determine the star's apparent fundamental parameters and chemical abundances. Based on photometric time series obtained from three different space missions (BRITE-Constellation, SMEI, and TESS), we conduct a frequency analysis and investigate the stability of the pulsation amplitudes over four years of observations. We investigate the presence of a magnetic field and its properties using spectropolarimetric observations taken with the Narval instrument by applying the Least Square Deconvolution and Zeeman Doppler Imaging techniques. beta Cas shows only three independent p-mode frequencies down to the few ppm-level; its highest amplitude frequency is suggested to be a $n=3$, $\ell = 2$, $m=0$ mode. Its magnetic field structure is quite complex and almost certainly of a dynamo origin. beta Cas' atmosphere is slightly deficient in iron peak elements and slightly overabundant in C, O, and heavier elements. Atypically for delta Scuti stars, we can only detect three pulsation modes down to exceptionally low noise levels for beta Cas. The star is also one of very few delta Scuti pulsators known to date to show a measurable magnetic field, and the first delta Scuti star with a dynamo magnetic field. These characteristics make beta Cas an interesting target for future studies of dynamo processes in the thin convective envelopes of F-type stars, of the transition region between fossil and dynamo fields, and the interaction between pulsations and magnetic field.
The present work concerns the Asteroseismology of the Kepler detached eclipsing binary KIC 8504570. Particularly, it focuses on the pulsational behaviour of the oscillating component of this system and the estimation of its physical parameters in order to enrich the so far poor sample of this kind of systems. Using spectroscopic observations, the spectral type of the primary component was determined and used to create accurate light curves models and estimate its absolute parameters. The light curve residuals were subsequently analysed using Fourier transformation techniques to obtain the puls…
BRITE-Constellation has obtained data for a few delta Scuti and gamma Doradus type stars. A short overview of the pulsational content found in five stars - beta Cassiopeiae, epsilon Cephei, M Velorum, beta Pictoris and QW Puppis - is given and the potential of BRITE-Constellation observations of delta Scuti and gamma Doradus pulsators is discussed.
HD 187547 was the first candidate that led to the suggestion that solar-like oscillations are present in delta Scuti stars. Longer observations, however, show that the modes interpreted as solar-like oscillations have either very long mode lifetimes, longer than 960 days, or are coherent. These results are incompatible with the nature of `pure' stochastic excitation as observed in solar-like stars. Nonetheless, one point is certain: the opacity mechanism alone cannot explain the oscillation spectrum of HD 187547. Here we present new theoretical investigations showing that convection dynamics c…
In the last years, space missions such as COROT, Kepler or MOST have provided very accurate photometric observational data. In the particular case of $δ$ Scuti stars, the observed frequency spectra have hundreds (if not thousands) of modes and a clear amplitude distribution. In this work we present new techniques for modelling these observations and the results obtained. We searched for regular patterns in the observational data, which yields something resembling the large separation. This allows to reduce the possible positions of the star in the HR diagram, yielding a value of the mean densi…
We consider the high mode density reported in the delta Scuti star HD 50844 observed by CoRoT. Using simulations, we find that extracting frequencies down to a given false alarm probability by means of successive prewhitening leads to a gross over-estimate of the number of frequencies in a star. This is due to blending of the peaks in the periodogram due to the finite duration of the time series. Prewhitening is equivalent to adding a frequency to the data which is carefully chosen to interfere destructively with a given frequency in the data. Since the frequency extracted from a blended peak …
The catalogue contains 199 confirmed cases of binary systems containing at least one pulsating component of δ Scuti type. The sample is divided into subgroups in order to describe the properties and characteristics of the δ Sct type stars in binaries according to their Roche geometry. Demographics describing quantitatively our knowledge for these systems as well as the distributions of their pulsating components in the Mass-Radius, Colour-Magnitude and Evolutionary Status-Temperature diagrams are presented and discussed. It is shown that a threshold of ~13 days of the orbital period regarding …
We investigate the pulsation properties of stellar models representative of $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus variables. We have calculated a grid of stellar models from 1.2 to 2.2 M$_{\odot}$, including the effects of both rotation and convective overshoot using MESA, and we investigate the pulsation properties of these models using GYRE. We discuss observable patterns in the frequency spacing for $p$ modes and the period spacings for g modes. Using the observable patterns in g mode period spacings, it may be possible to observationally constrain the convective overshoot and rotation of a model. We a…
Aims. The Baade-Wesselink method of distance determination is based on the oscillations of pulsating stars. The key parameter of this method is the projection factor used to convert the radial velocity into the pulsation velocity. Our analysis was aimed at deriving for the first time the projection factor of delta Scuti stars, using high-resolution spectra of the high-amplitude pulsator AI Vel and of the fast rotator beta Cas. Methods. The geometric component of the projection factor (i.e. p0) was calculated using a limb-darkening model of the intensity distribution for AI Vel, and a fast-rota…
Fractal fingerprints have been found recently in the light curves of several δ Scuti stars observed by CoRoT satellite. This sole fact might pose a problem for the detection of pulsation frequencies using classical pre-whitening techniques, but it is also a potentially rich source for information about physical mechanisms associated to stellar variability. Assuming that a light curve is composed by a superposition of oscillation modes with a fractal background noise, in this work we applied the Coarse Graining Spectral Analysis (CGSA), an FFT based algorithm, which can discriminate in a time s…
While several observational investigations have revealed the presence of magnetic fields in the circumstellar envelopes, jets and outflows of post-Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (PAGBs) and planetary nebulae (PNe), none has clearly demonstrated their presence at the stellar surface. The lack of information on the strength of the surface magnetic fields prevents us from performing any thorough assessment of their dynamic capability (i.e. material mixing, envelope shaping, etc). We present new high resolution spectropolarimetric (Stokes V ) observations of a sample of PAGB stars, realised with th…
We present a complex study of the eclipsing binary system, AB Cas. The analysis of the whole TESS light curve, corrected for the binary effects, reveals 112 significant frequency peaks with 17 independent signals. The dominant frequency $f_1 = $17.1564 d$^{-1}$ is a radial fundamental mode. The $O-C$ analysis of the times of light minima from over 92 years leads to a conclusion that due to the ongoing mass transfer the system exhibits a change of the orbital period at a rate of 0.03 s per year. In order to find evolutionary models describing the current stage of AB Cas, we perform binary evolu…
We report the discovery of a new eclipsing EL CVn-type binary, consisting of a $δ$ Sct-type pulsator and a thermally bloated low-mass pre-He white dwarf (WD). Spectroscopy and time-series $BV$ photometry of V1224 Cas were carried out. The spectroscopy reveals a spectral type of A3 for the star. Light-curve modelling indicate that V1224 Cas is a short-period detached system containing a possible low-mass WD with an effective temperature of about 9516 K. Based on the effective temperature and the surface gravity of the A-type primary star from the spectroscopic results, the absolute parameters o…
We present high-precision time-series photometry of the classical delta Scuti star HD 144277 obtained with the MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of STars) satellite in two consecutive years. The observed regular frequency patterns are investigated asteroseismologically. HD 144277 is a hot A-type star that is located on the blue border of the classical instability strip. While we mostly observe low radial order modes in classical delta Scuti stars, HD 144277 presents a different case. Its high observed frequencies, i.e., between 59.9c/d (693.9 microHz) and 71.1c/d (822.8microHz), suggest …

Rich regular frequency patterns were found in the Fourier spectra of low-amplitude delta Scuti stars observed by CoRoT satellite (see Paparó et al. 2016a,b). The CoRoT observations are, however, influenced by the disturbing effect of the South Atlantic Anomaly. The effect is marginal for high amplitude variable stars but it could be critical in the case of low amplitude variables, especially if the frequency range of the intrinsic variation overlaps the interval of the instrumental frequencies. Some tests were carried out both on synthetic and real data for distinguishing technical and stars' …
Stellar dynamos are affected by boundary conditions imposed by stellar coronae. Under some approximations it is possible to find analytical solutions. Interior dynamo models often consider a current-free coronae without taking into account the constraints imposed by the presence of currents in the corona. We aim to analytically evaluate the effect of coronal currents and of an outer boundary condition on the efficiency of an $α^2$ dynamo. We intend to estimate the change in geometry and dinamo excitation numbers with respect to the current-free case. We analytically solve the turbulent dynamo …
This research aims to secure precise distances for cluster delta Scutis in order to investigate their properties via a VI Wesenheit framework. Deep JHKs colour-colour and ZAMS relations derived from ~700 unreddened stars featuring 2MASS photometry and precise HIP parallaxes (d<~25 pc) are applied to establish distances to several benchmark open clusters that host delta Scutis: Hyades, Pleiades, Praesepe, alpha Per, and M67 (d=47+-2,138+-6,183+-8,171+-8,815+-40 pc). That analysis provided constraints on the delta Sct sample's absolute Wesenheit magnitudes (W_VI,0), evolutionary status, and puls…
When scale separation in space and time is poor, the alpha effect and turbulent diffusivity have to be replaced by integral kernels. Earlier work in computing these kernels using the test-field method is now generalized to the case in which both spatial and temporal scale separations are poor. The approximate form of the kernel is such that it can be treated in a straightforward manner by solving a partial differential equation for the mean electromotive force. The resulting mean-field equations are solved for oscillatory alpha-shear dynamos as well as alpha^2 dynamos in which alpha is antisym…
The present work contains light curve, spectroscopic and asteroseismic analyses for KIC 04851217 and KIC 10686876. These systems are detached eclipsing binaries hosting a pulsating component of delta Scuti type and have been observed with the unprecedented accuracy of the Kepler space telescope. Using ground based spectroscopic observations, the spectral types of the primary components of the systems were estimated as A6V and A5V for KIC 04851217 and KIC 10686876, respectively, with an uncertainty of one subclass. The present spectral classification together with literature radial velocities c…
It is known that the observed distribution of frequencies in CoRoT and Kepler δ Scuti stars has no parallelism with any theoretical model. Pre-whitening is a widespread technique in the analysis of time series with gaps from pulsating stars located in the classical instability strip such as δ Scuti stars. However, some studies have pointed out that this technique might introduce biases in the results of the frequency analysis. This work aims at studying the biases that can result from pre-whitening in asteroseismology. The results will depend on the intrinsic range and distribution of frequenc…
The Kepler space mission provided a wealth of δ Sct-γ Dor hybrid candidates. While some may be genuine hybrids, others might be misclassified due to the presence of a binary companion or to rotational modulation caused by magnetism and related surface inhomogeneities. In particular, the Kepler δ Sct-γ Dor hybrid candidate HD 188774 shows a few low frequencies in its light and radial velocity curves, whose origin is unclear. In this work, we check for the presence of a magnetic field in HD 188774. We obtained two spectropolarimetric measurements with ESPaDOnS at CFHT. The data were analysed wit…
The role of magnetic helicity in astrophysical large-scale dynamos is reviewed and compared with cases where there is no energy supply and an initial magnetic field can only decay. In both cases magnetic energy tends to get redistributed to larger scales. Depending on the efficiency of magnetic helicity fluxes, the decay of a helical field can speed up. Likewise, the saturation of a helical dynamo can speed up through magnetic helicity fluxes. The astrophysical importance of these processes is reviewed in the context of the solar dynamo and an estimated upper limit for the magnetic helicity fl…
Many stars exhibit stellar pulsations, favoring them for asteroseismic analyses. Interpreting the oscillations requires some knowledge of the oscillation mode geometry (spherical degree, radial and azimuthal orders). The delta Scuti stars (1.5 - 2.5 M_sol) often show just one or few pulsation frequencies. Although this may promise a successful seismological analysis, we may not know enough about either the mode or the star to use the oscillation frequency to improve the determination of the stellar model, or probe the star's structure. For the observed frequencies to be used successfully as se…
Several recent advances in turbulent dynamo theory are reviewed. High resolution simulations of small-scale and large-scale dynamo action in periodic domains are compared with each other and contrasted with similar results at low magnetic Prandtl numbers. It is argued that all the different cases show similarities at intermediate length scales. On the other hand, in the presence of helicity of the turbulence, power develops on large scales, which is not present in non-helical small-scale turbulent dynamos. At small length scales, differences occur in connection with the dissipation cutoff scal…
Stellar structure and evolution theory is one of the basis in modern astronomy. Stellar inner structures and their evolutionary states can be precisely tested by asteroseismology, since the inner information is brought to the stellar surface by the global oscillating waves and becomes observable. For stellar evolutionary speed (i.e. how long time scale does a star stay at a special evolution phase?), because of the insurmountable gap between the time scales of the evolutionary history of human civilization and a star, it can only be roughly tested by ensemble of stars in different evolutionary…
The (Zeeman-)Doppler imaging studies of solar-type stars very often reveal large high-latitude spots. This also includes F stars that possess relatively shallow convection zones, indicating that the dynamo operating in these stars differs from the solar dynamo. We aim to determine whether mean-field dynamo models of late-F type dwarf stars can reproduce the surface features recovered in Doppler maps. In particular, we wish to test whether the models can reproduce the high-latitude spots observed on some F dwarfs. The photometric inversions and the surface temperature maps of AF Lep were obtain…
Pulsating stars in binary systems are ideal laboratories to test stellar evolution and pulsation theory, since a direct, model-independent determination of component masses is possible. The high-precision CoRoT photometry allows a detailed view of the frequency content of pulsating stars, enabling detection of patterns in their distribution. The object HD 51844 is such a case showing periastron brightening instead of eclipses. We present a comprehensive study of the HD 51844 system, where we derive physical parameters of both components, the pulsation content and frequency patterns. Additional…
Mutual gravitation between a pulsating star and an orbital companion leads to a time-dependent variation in path length for starlight traveling to Earth. These variations can be used for coherently pulsating stars, such as the δ Scuti variables, to constrain the masses and orbits of their companions. Observing these variations for δ Scuti stars has previously relied on subdividing the light curve and measuring the average pulsation phase in equally sized subdivisions, which leads to under-sampling near periapsis. We introduce a new approach that simultaneously forward-models each sample in the…
Numerical aspects of dynamos in periodic domains are discussed. Modifications of the solutions by numerically motivated alterations of the equations are being reviewed using the examples of magnetic hyperdiffusion and artificial diffusion when advancing the magnetic field in its Euler potential representation. The importance of using integral kernel formulations in mean-field dynamo theory is emphasized in cases where the dynamo growth rate becomes comparable with the inverse turnover time. Finally, the significance of microscopic magnetic Prandtl number in controlling the conversion from kine…
The mean-field dynamo model is employed to study the non-linear dynamo regimes in a fully convective star of mass 0.3$M_{\odot}$ rotating with period of 10 days. For the intermediate value of the parameter of the turbulent magnetic Prandl number, $Pm_{T}=3$ we found the oscillating dynamo regimes with period about 40Yr. The higher $Pm_{T}$ results to longer dynamo periods. If the large-scale flows is fixed we find that the dynamo transits from axisymmetric to non-axisymmetric regimes for the overcritical parameter of the $α$effect. The change of dynamo regime occurs because of the non-axisymme…
There is a class of binary post-AGB stars with a remarkable near-infrared excess that are surrounded by Keplerian or quasi-Keplerian disks and extended outflows composed of gas escaping from the disk. The Keplerian dynamics had been well identified in four cases, namely the Red Rectangle, AC Her, IW Car, and IRAS 08544-4431. In these objects, the mass of the outflow represents ~ 10 % of the nebular mass, the disk being the dominant component of the nebula. We present interferometric NOEMA maps of 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 in 89 Her and 12CO J=2-1 in AC Her, IRAS 19125+0343, and R Sct. Several proper…
This study is concerned with the early evolution of magnetic fields and differential rotation of intermediate-mass stars which may evolve into Ap stars. We report on simulations of the interplay of differential rotation and magnetic fields, the stability limits and non-linear evolution of such configurations, and the prospects of dynamo action from the unstable cases. The axisymmetric problem delivers a balance between field amplification and back-reaction of the magnetic field on the differential rotation. The non-axisymmetric case involves also the Tayler instability of the amplified toroida…
We present a method to characterize the spectral transfers of magnetic energy between scales in simulations of stellar convective dynamos. The full triadic transfer functions are computed thanks to analytical coupling relations of spherical harmonics based on the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. The method is applied to mean field $αΩ$ dynamo models as benchmark tests. From the physical standpoint, the decomposition of the dynamo field into primary and secondary dynamo families proves very instructive in the $αΩ$ case. The same method is then applied to a fully turbulent dynamo in a solar convecti…
The turbulent cross helicity is directly related to the coupling coefficients for the mean vorticity in the electromotive force and for the mean magnetic-field strain in the Reynolds stress tensor. This suggests that the cross-helicity effects are important in the cases where global inhomogeneous flow and magnetic-field structures are present. Since such large-scale structures are ubiquitous in geo/astrophysical phenomena, the cross-helicity effect is expected to play an important role in geo/astrophysical flows. In the presence of turbulent cross helicity, the mean vortical motion contributes…
We report on the results of four convective dynamo simulations with an outer coronal layer. The magnetic field is self-consistently generated by the convective motions beneath the surface. Above the convection zone, we include a polytropic layer that extends to 1.6 solar radii. The temperature increases in this region to $\approx8$ times the value at the surface, corresponding to $\approx1.2$ times the value at the bottom of the spherical shell. We associate this region with the solar corona. We find solar-like differential rotation with radial contours of constant rotation rate, together with…
The main objective of this paper is to introduce the STABLE (Surface flux Transport And Babcock-LEighton) solar dynamo model. STABLE is a 3D Babcock-Leighton/Flux Transport dynamo model in which the source of poloidal field is the explicit emergence, distortion, and dispersal of bipolar magnetic regions (BMRs). Here we describe the STABLE model in more detail than we have previously and we verify it by reproducing a 2D mean-field benchmark. We also present some representative dynamo simulations, focusing on the special case of kinematic magnetic induction and axisymmetric flow fields. Not all …
M-dwarf stars are well known for the intense magnetic activity that many of them exhibit. In cool stars with near-surface convection zones, this magnetic activity is thought to be driven largely by the interplay of convection and the large scale differential rotation and circulations it establishes. The highly nonlinear nature of these flows yields a fascinatingly sensitive and diverse parameter space, with a wide range of possible dynamics. We report here on a set of three global MHD simulations of rapidly rotating M2 (0.4 $M_\odot$) stars. Each of these three models established nests of vigo…
It is shown that the magnetic current-driven (`kink-type') instability produces flow and field patterns with helicity and even with α-effect but only if the magnetic background field possesses non-vanishing current helicity \bar{\vec{B}}\cdot curl \bar{\vec{B}} by itself. Fields with positive large-scale current helicity lead to negative small-scale kinetic helicity. The resulting α-effect is positive. These results are very strict for cylindric setups without <i>z/I>-dependence of the background fields. The sign rules also hold for the more complicated cases in spheres where the toroidal fiel…
The magnetic fields of solar-type stars are observed to cycle over decadal periods -11 years in the case of the Sun. The fields originate in the turbulent convective layers of stars and have a complex dependency upon stellar rotation rate. We have performed a set of turbulent global simulations that exhibit magnetic cycles varying systematically with stellar rotation and luminosity. We find that the magnetic cycle period is inversely proportional to the Rossby number, which quantifies the influence of rotation on turbulent convection. The trend relies on a fundamentally non-linear dynamo proce…
Extraction of characteristics of the complex light curve of pulsating stars is essential for stellar physics. We investigate the complex network (natural and horizontal visibility graphs) properties of the \dsct\ stars light curves observed by \tess. We find that the average shortest path length of \dsct\ light curves is a linear function of the logarithm of the network sizes, indicating the small-world and non-random properties. The small-world property signifies the connection of significant peaks of the light curve with small nearing peaks and other important peaks. The lognormal behavior o…
We study dynamo action in a convective layer of electrically-conducting, compressible fluid, rotating about the vertical axis. At the upper and lower bounding surfaces, perfectly-conducting boundary conditions are adopted for the magnetic field. Two different levels of thermal stratification are considered. If the magnetic diffusivity is sufficiently small, the convection acts as a small-scale dynamo. Using a definition for the magnetic Reynolds number $R_M$ that is based upon the horizontal integral scale and the horizontally-averaged velocity at the mid-layer of the domain, we find that rota…
Recently Vishik anti-fast dynamo theorem, has been tested against non-stretching flux tubes [Phys Plasmas 15 (2008)]. In this paper, another anti-dynamo theorem, called Cowling's theorem, which states that axisymmetric magnetic fields cannot support dynamo action, is carefully tested against thick tubular and curved Riemannian untwisted flows, as well as thin flux tubes in diffusive and diffusionless media. In the non-diffusive media the Cowling's theorem is not violated in thin Riemann-flat untwisted flux tubes, where the Frenet curvature is negative. Nevertheless the diffusion action in the …
The variable magnetic field of the solar photosphere exhibits periodic reversals as a result of dynamo activity occurring within the solar interior. We decompose the surface field as observed by both the Wilcox Solar Observatory and the Michelson Doppler Imager into its harmonic constituents, and present the time evolution of the mode coefficients for the past three sunspot cycles. The interplay between the various modes is then interpreted from the perspective of general dynamo theory, where the coupling between the primary and secondary families of modes is found to correlate with large-scal…
Recent numerical simulations of dynamo action resulting from rotating convection have revealed some serious problems in applying the standard picture of mean field electrodynamics at high values of the magnetic Reynolds number, and have thereby underlined the difficulties in large-scale magnetic field generation in this regime. Here we consider kinematic dynamo processes in a rotating convective layer of Boussinesq fluid with the additional influence of a large-scale horizontal velocity shear. Incorporating the shear flow enhances the dynamo growth rate and also leads to the generation of sign…
Investigation of the eigenvalue spectra of dynamo solutions, has been proved fundamental for the knowledge of dynamo physics. Earlier, curvature-folding relation on dynamos in Riemannian spaces has been investigated [PPL 2008]. Here, analytical solutions representing general turbulent dynamo filaments are obtained in resistive plasmas. Turbulent diffusivity with vanishing kinetic helicity yields a fast mode for a steady dynamo eigenvalue. The magnetic field lays down on a local frame 2 plane along the filaments embedded in a 3D plasma. Curvature effects plays the role of folding in fast magnet…
We study effects of the cross-helicity in the full-sphere large-scale mean-field dynamo models of the 0.3M star rotating with the period of 10 days. In exploring several dynamo scenarios which are stemming from the cross-helicity generation effect, we found that the cross-helicity provide the natural generation mechanisms for the large-scale scale axisym- metric and non-axisymmetric magnetic field. Therefore the rotating stars with convective envelope can produce the large-scale magnetic field generated solely due to the turbulent cross-helicity effect (we call it γ 2 -dynamo). Using mean-fiel…
We study activity waves of the kind that determine cyclic magnetic activity of various stars, including the Sun, as a more general physical rather than a purely astronomical problem. We try to identify resonances which are expected to occur when a mean-field dynamo excites waves of quasi-stationary magnetic field in two distinct spherical layers. We isolate some features that can be associated with resonances in the profiles of energy or frequency plotted versus a dynamo governing parameter. Rather unexpectedly however the resonances in spherical dynamos take a much less spectacular form than …
Turbulent dynamo theories have faced difficulties in obtaining evolution of large-scale magnetic fields on short dynamical time-scales due to the constraint imposed by magnetic helicity balance. This has critical implications for understanding the large-scale magnetic field evolution in astrophysical systems like the Sun, stars and galaxies. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) in the past with isotropically forced helical turbulence have shown that large-scale dynamo saturation time-scales are dependent on the magnetic Reynolds number (Rm). In this work, we have carried out periodic box DNS of …
Magnetic fields of low-mass stars and planets are thought to originate from self-excited dynamo action in their convective interiors. Observations reveal a variety of field topologies ranging from large-scale, axial dipole to more structured magnetic fields. In this article, we investigate more than 70 three-dimensional, self-consistent dynamo models obtained by direct numerical simulations. The control parameters, the aspect ratio and the mechanical boundary conditions have been varied to build up this sample of models. Both, strongly dipolar and multipolar models have been obtained. We show …
The buildup of small-scale magnetic helicity which accompanies the oppositely signed growth on large scales is central to conventional dynamical quenching theories of mean-field dynamos. However, the conventional formalism presumes isotropic turbulence and thereby excludes part of the magnetic Lorentz back-reaction. This renders it insufficient to predict the full quenching for general anisotropic flows. To overcome this deficiency, we derive a new generalized quenching formalism that includes the full back-reacting Lorentz force, and a new "selective-damping-$τ$" closure which conserves magne…
The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a linear α^{2}-dynamo have been computed for different spatial distributions of an isotropic α-effect. Oscillatory solutions are obtained when αexhibits a sign change in the radial direction. The time-dependent solutions arise at so called exceptional points where two stationary modes merge and continue as an oscillatory eigenfunction with conjugate complex eigenvalues. The close proximity of oscillatory and non-oscillatory solutions may serve as the basic ingredient for reversal models that describe abrupt polarity switches of a dipole induced by noise. W…
Models of large scale (magnetohydrodynamic) dynamos (LSD) which couple large scale field growth to total magnetic helicity evolution best predict the saturation of LSDs seen in simulations. For the simplest so called "α2" LSDs in periodic boxes, the electromotive force driving LSD growth depends on the difference between the time-integrated kinetic and current helicity associated with fluctuations. When the system is helically kinetically forced (KF), the growth of the large scale helical field is accompanied by growth of small scale magnetic (and current) helicity which ultimately quench the …
Amplification of magnetic field due to kinematic turbulent dynamo action is studied in the regime of small magnetic Prandtl numbers. Such a regime is relevant for planets and stars interiors, as well as for liquid metal laboratory experiments. A comprehensive analysis based on the Kazantsev-Kraichnan model is reported, which establishes the dynamo threshold and the dynamo growth rates for varying kinetic helicity of turbulent fluctuations. It is proposed that in contrast with the case of large magnetic Prandtl numbers, the kinematic dynamo action at small magnetic Prandtl numbers is significan…
We report the first successful simulation of spontaneous formation of surface magnetic structures from a large-scale dynamo by strongly-stratified thermal convection in Cartesian geometry. The large-scale dynamo observed in our strongly-stratified model has physical properties similar to those in earlier weakly-stratified convective dynamo simulations, indicating that the $α^2$-type mechanism is responsible for it. Additionally to the large-scale dynamo, we find that large-scale structures of the vertical magnetic field are spontaneously formed in the convection zone surface only for the case …
For a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma the dynamo action with ABC flow as initial condition has been studied. The study delineates crucial parameter that gives a transition from coherent nonlinear oscillation to dynamo. Further, for both kinematic and dynamic models at magnetic Prandtl number equal to unity the dynamo action is studied for driven ABC flows. The magnetic resistivity has been chosen at a value where the fast dynamo occurs and the growth rate shows no further variation with the change of magnetic Reynold's number. The exponent of growth of magnetic energy increa…
