In this paper, a new axiomatization for unbounded functional calculi is proposed and the associated theory is elaborated comprising, among others, uniqueness and compatibility results and extension theorems of algebraic and topological nature. In contrast to earlier approaches, no commutativity assumptions need to be made about the underlying algebras.
In a second part, the abstract theory is illustrated in familiar situations (sectorial operators, semigroup generators, normal operators). New topological extension theorems are proved for the sectorial calculus and the Hille--Phillips calculus. Moreover, it is shown that the Stieltjes and the Hirsch calculus for sectorial operators are subcalculi of a (small) topological extension of the sectorial calculus.
This article summarises the theory of several bounded functional calculi for unbounded operators that have recently been discovered. The extend the Hille--Phillips calculus for (negative) generators $A$ of certain bounded $C_0$-semigroups, in particular for bounded semigroups on Hilbert spaces and bounded holomorphic semigroups on Banach spaces. They include functions outside the Hille-Phillips class, and they generally give sharper bounds for the norms of the resulting operators $f(A)$. The calculi are mostly based on appropriate reproducing formulas for the relevant classes of functions, and…
We discuss the notion of $γ$-$H^{\infty}$-bounded calculus, strong $γ$-$m$-$H^{\infty}$-bounded calculus on half-plane and weak-$γ$-Gomilko-Shi-Feng condition and give a connection between them. Then we state a characterization of generation of $γ$-bounded $C_0$-semigroup in $K$-convex space, which leads to a version of Gearhart-Prüss on $K$-convex space.
We study the product formula $(fg)(A) = f(A)g(A)$ in the framework of (unbounded) functional calculus of sectorial operators $A$. We give an abstract result, and, as corollaries, we obtain new product formulas for the holomorphic functional calculus, an extended Stieltjes functional calculus and an extended Hille-Phillips functional calculus. Our results generalise previous work of Hirsch, Martinez and Sanz, and Schilling.
We construct two bounded functional calculi for sectorial operators on Banach spaces, which enhance the functional calculus for analytic Besov functions, by extending the class of functions, generalizing and sharpening estimates, and adapting the calculus to the angle of sectoriality. The calculi are based on appropriate reproducing formulas, they are compatible with standard functional calculi and they admit appropriate convergence lemmas and spectral mapping theorems. To achieve this, we develop the theory of associated function spaces in ways which are interesting and significant. As conseq…
Gramsch and Lay [10] gave spectral mapping theorems for the Dunford-Taylor calculus of a closed linear operator $T$, $$\widetildeσ_i(f(T)) = f(\widetildeσ_i(T)), $$ for several extended essential spectra $\widetildeσ_i$. In this work, we extend such theorems for the natural functional calculus introduced by Haase [12,13]. We use the model case of bisectorial operators. The proofs presented here are generic, and are valid for similar functional calculus.
Let $\Box_b$ be the Kohn Laplacian acting on $(0,j)$-forms on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{C}^n$. In a recent paper of Casarino, Cowling, Sikora and the author, a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type for $\Box_b$ is proved in the case $0<j<n-1$. Here we prove an analogous theorem in the exceptional cases $j=0$ and $j=n-1$, including a weak type $(1,1)$ endpoint estimate. We also show that both theorems are sharp. The proof hinges on an abstract multivariate multiplier theorem for systems of commuting operators.
In this paper the notion of an abstract square function (estimate) is introduced as an operator X to gamma (H; Y), where X, Y are Banach spaces, H is a Hilbert space, and gamma(H; Y) is the space of gamma-radonifying operators. By the seminal work of Kalton and Weis, this definition is a coherent generalisation of the classical notion of square function appearing in the theory of singular integrals. Given an abstract functional calculus (E, F, Phi) on a Banach space X, where F (O) is an algebra of scalar-valued functions on a set O, we define a square function Phi_gamma(f) for certain H-valued…
We construct a new bounded functional calculus for the generators of bounded semigroups on Hilbert spaces and generators of bounded holomorphic semigroups on Banach spaces. The calculus is a natural (and strict) extension of the classical Hille-Phillips functional calculus, and it is compatible with the other well-known functional calculi. It satisfies the standard properties of functional calculi, provides a unified and direct approach to a number of norm-estimates in the literature, and allows improvements of some of them.
We study conical square function estimates for Banach-valued functions, and introduce a vector-valued analogue of the Coifman-Meyer-Stein tent spaces. Following recent work of Auscher-McIntosh-Russ, the tent spaces in turn are used to construct a scale of vector-valued Hardy spaces associated with a given bisectorial operator (A) with certain off-diagonal bounds, such that (A) always has a bounded (H^{\infty})-functional calculus on these spaces. This provides a new way of proving functional calculus of (A) on the Bochner spaces (L^p(\R^n;X)) by checking appropriate conical square function est…
Perturbed Hodge-Dirac operators and their holomorphic functional calculi, as investigated in the papers by Axelsson, Keith and the second author, provided insight into the solution of the Kato square-root problem for elliptic operators in $L^2$ spaces, and allowed for an extension of these estimates to other systems with applications to non-smooth boundary value problems. In this paper, we determine conditions under which such operators satisfy conical square function estimates in a range of $L^p$ spaces, thus allowing us to apply the theory of Hardy spaces associated with an operator, to prov…
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is given. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated, and several examples are considered.
Recently, the different types of unbounded convergences (uo, un, uaw, uaw*) in Banach lattices were studied. In this paper, we study the continuous functionals with respect to unbounded convergences. We first characterize the continuity of linear functionals for these convergences. Then we define the corresponding unbounded dual spaces and get their exact form. Based on these results, we discuss order continuity and reflexivity of Banach lattices. Some related results are obtained as well.
Regarding quaternions as normal matrices, we first characterize the $2\times 2$ matrix-valued functions, defined on subsets of quaternions, whose values are quaternions. Then we investigate the regularity of quaternionic-valued functions, defined by the analytic functional calculus. Constructions of analytic functional calculi for real linear operators, in particular for quaternionic linear ones, are finally discussed, using a Riesz-Dunford-Gelfand type kernel in one variable, or a Martinelly type kernel in two variables.
Let $E$ and $F$ be Banach lattices. We show first that the disjointness preserving linear functionals separate the points of any infinite dimensional Banach lattice $E$, which shows that in this case the unbounded disjointness operators from $E\to F$ separate the points of $E$. Then we show that every disjointness preserving operator $T:E\to F$ is norm bounded on an order dense ideal. In case $E$ has order continuous norm, this implies that that every unbounded disjointness preserving map $T:E\to F$ has a unique decomposition $T=R+S$, where $R$ is a bounded disjointness preserving operator and…
Holomorphic functions play a crucial role in operator theory and the Cauchy formula is a very important tool to define functions of operators. The Fueter-Sce-Qian extension theorem is a two steps procedure to extend holomorphic functions to the hyperholomorphic setting. The first step gives the class of slice hyperholomorphic functions; their Cauchy formula allows to define the so-called $S$-functional calculus for noncommuting operators based on the $S$-spectrum. In the second step this extension procedure generates monogenic functions; the related monogenic functional calculus, based on the …
Recently, the functionals different types of unbounded convergences (uo, un, uaw, uaw*) in Banach lattices were studied. In this paper, we study the continuous operators with respect to unbounded convergences. We first investigate the approximation property of continuous operators for unbounded convergence. Then we show some characterizations of the continuity of the continuous operators for uo, un, uaw and uaw*-convergence. Based on these results, we discuss the order-weakly compact operators on Banach lattices. Some related results are obtained as well.
Given a C*-algebra A with a semicontinuous semifinite trace tau acting on the Hilbert space H, we define the family R of bounded Riemann measurable elements w.r.t. tau as a suitable closure, a la Dedekind, of A, in analogy with one of the classical characterizations of Riemann measurable functions, and show that R is a C*-algebra, and tau extends to a semicontinuous semifinite trace on R. Then, unbounded Riemann measurable operators are defined as the closed operators on H which are affiliated to A'' and can be approximated in measure by operators in R, in analogy with unbounded Riemann integr…
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is considered. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated. In particular, the multiplication rule and the composition rule are proved. Several examples are given.
In this paper, we introduce a parametric pseudodifferential calculus on noncommutative $n$-tori which is a natural nest for resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. Unlike in some previous approaches to parametric pseudodifferential calculi, our parametric pseudodifferential calculus contains resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators that need not be differential operators. As an application we show that complex powers of positive elliptic pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative $n$-tori are pseudodifferential operators. This confirms a claim of Fathi-Ghorbanpour-K…
Universal continuous calculi are defined and it is shown that for every finite tuple of pairwise commuting Hermitian elements of a Su*-algebra (an ordered *-algebra that is symmetric, i.e. "strictly" positive elements are invertible, and uniformly complete), such a universal continuous calculus exists. This generalizes the continuous calculus for C*-algebras to a class of generally unbounded ordered *-algebras. On the way, some results about *-algebras of continuous functions on locally compact spaces are obtained. The approach used throughout is rather elementary and especially avoids any rep…
The spectral theory on the $S$-spectrum was born out of the need to give quaternionic quantum mechanics (formulated by Birkhoff and von Neumann) a precise mathematical foundation. Then it turned out that this theory has important applications in several fields such as fractional diffusion problems and, moreover, it allows one to define several functional calculi for $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators. With this paper we show that the spectral theory on the $S$-spectrum is much more general and it contains, just as particular cases, the complex, the quaternionic and the Clifford settings. Mor…
A consistent functional calculus approach to the spectral theorem for strongly commuting normal operators on Hilbert spaces is presented. In contrast to the common approaches using projection-valued measures or multiplication operators, here the functional calculus is not treated as a subordinate but as the central concept. Based on five simple axioms for a "measurable functional calculus", the theory of such calculi is developed in detail, including spectral theory, uniqueness results and construction principles. Finally, the functional calculus form of the spectral theorem is stated and prov…
Within the functional calculi of Bochner-Phillips and Hirsch, we describe the operators of distributed order differentiation and integration as functions of the classical differentiation and integration operators respectively.
Description of linear continuous functionals on a space of rapidly decreasing infinitely differentiable functions on an unbounded closed convex set in $\mathbb R^n$ in terms of their Fourier-Laplace transform is obtained.
A functional model for nondissipative unbounded perturbations of an unbounded self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space X is constructed. This model is analogous to the Nagy--Foias model of dissipative operators, but it is linearly similar and not unitarily equivalent to the operator. It is attached to a domain of parabolic type, instead of a half-plane. The transformation map from X to the model space and the analogue of the characteristic function are given explicitly. All usual consequences of the Nagy--Foias construction (the H-infty calculus, the commutant lifting, etc.) hold true in our c…
We consider a space of infinitely smooth functions on an unbounded closed convex set in ${\mathbb R}^n$. It is shown that each function of this space can be extended to an entire function in ${\mathbb C}^n$ satisfying some prescribed growth condition. Description of linear continuous functionals on this space in terms of their Fourier-Laplace transform is obtained. Also a variant of the Paley-Wiener-Schwartz theorem for tempered distributions is given it the paper.
In this paper, using the recently discovered notion of the $S$-spectrum, we prove the spectral theorem for a bounded or unbounded normal operator on a Clifford module (i.e., a two-sided Hilbert module over a Clifford algebra based on units that all square to be $-1$). Moreover, we establish the existence of a Borel functional calculus for bounded or unbounded normal operators on a Clifford module. Towards this end, we have developed many results on functional analysis, operator theory, integration theory and measure theory in a Clifford setting which may be of an independent interest. Our spec…
In this article we apply a recently established transference principle in order to obtain the boundedness of certain functional calculi for semigroup generators. In particular, it is proved that if $-A$ generates a $C_0$-semigroup on a Hilbert space, then for each $τ>0$ the operator $A$ has a bounded calculus for the closed ideal of bounded holomorphic functions on a (sufficiently large) right half-plane that satisfy $f(z)=O(e^{-τ\textrm{Re}(z)})$ as $|z|\rightarrow \infty$. The bound of this calculus grows at most logarithmically as $τ\searrow 0$. As a consequence, $f(A)$ is a bounded operato…
Using functional calculi theory, we obtain several estimates for $\|ψ(A)g(A)\|$, where $ψ$ is a Bernstein function, $g$ is a bounded completely monotone function and $-A$ is the generator of a holomorphic $C_0$-semigroup on a Banach space, bounded on $[0,\infty)$. Such estimates are of value, in particular, in approximation theory of operator semigroups. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the fact that $-ψ(A)$ generates a holomorphic semigroup whenever $-A$ does, established recently in [8] by a different approach.
We study functional calculus properties of $C_{0}$-groups on real interpolation spaces, using transference principles. We obtain interpolation versions of the classical transference principle for bounded groups and of a recent transference principle for unbounded groups. Then we show that each group generator on a Banach space has a bounded $H^{\infty}_{1}$-calculus on real interpolation spaces. Additional results are derived from this.
Spectral theory and functional calculus for unbounded self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space are usually treated through von Neumann's Cayley transform. Based on ideas of Woronowicz, we redevelop this theory from the point of view of multiplier algebras and the so-called bounded transform (which establishes a bijective correspondence between closed operators and pure contractions). This also leads to a simple account of the affiliation relation between von Neumann algebras and self-adjoint operators.
The aim of this work is to define a continuous functional calculus in quaternionic Hilbert spaces, starting from basic issues regarding the notion of spherical spectrum of a normal operator. As properties of the spherical spectrum suggest, the class of continuous functions to consider in this setting is the one of slice quaternionic functions. Slice functions generalize the concept of slice regular function, which comprises power series with quaternionic coefficients on one side and that can be seen as an effective generalization to quaternions of holomorphic functions of one complex variable.…
