Precipitation in Mg-Zn alloys was analyzed by means of first principles calculations. Formation energies of symmetrically distinct hcp Mg1-xZnx (0 < x < 1) configurations were determined and potential candidates for Guinier-Preston zones coherent with the matrix were identified from the convex hull. The most likely structures were ranked depending on the interface energy along the basal plane. In addition, the formation energy and vibrational entropic contributions of several phases reported experimentally (Mg4Zn7, MgZn2 cubic, MgZn2 hexagonal, Mg21Zn25 and Mg2Zn11) were calculated. The formation energies of Mg4Zn7, MgZn2 cubic, and MgZn2 hexagonal Laves phases were very close because they were formed by different arrangements of rhombohedral and hexagonal lattice units. It was concluded that β_1^' precipitates were formed by a mixture of all of them. Nevertheless, the differences in the geometrical arrangements led to variations in the entropic energy contributions which determined the high temperature stability. It was found that the MgZn2 hexagonal Laves phase is the most stable phase at high temperature and, thus, β_1^' precipitates tend to transform into the β_2^' (MgZn2 hexagonal) precipitates with higher aging temperature or longer aging times. Finally, the equilibrium βphase (Mg21Zn25) was found to be a long-range order that precipitates the last one on account of the kinetic processes necessary to trigger the transformation from a short-range order phase β_2^' to β.
Atomistic simulations were carried out to analyze the interaction between $< a>$ basal dislocations and precipitates in Mg-Al alloys and the associated strengthening mechanisms.
Precipitation on deformation defects is essential for enhancing mechanical properties of age-hardenable alloys. {10-12} twinning is common in deformed alloys with hexagonal-close-packed structure. In this work, we revealed how {10-12} twin boundary (TB) influences beta-Mg17Al12 precipitation in Mg-9Al-1Zn alloy. The precipitates on the TB are rod-like, while others are lath-shape. The precipitates hold the Burgers orientation relationship (OR) only with twin or matrix, contrary to traditional wisdom in others alloys that precipitates on TB symmetrically keep an OR with both twin and matrix. Mo…
We apply a combinatorial approach to study the influence of Mg concentration on the precipitation kinetics in an Al-Cu-Li alloy using a diffusion couple made by linear friction welding. The precipitation kinetics is monitored in the composition gradient material using simultaneous space and time-resolved in-situ small-angle X-ray scattering measurements during ageing, and the strengthening of the precipitates is evaluated by micro-hardness profiles. This data provides an evaluation of the amount of Mg necessary to promote precipitation of the T1-Al2CuLi phase.
The influence of initial heat treatment on anomalous Cr precipitation within high temperature solubility region in Fe-9Cr alloy has been investigated using positron lifetime studies. Air-quenched samples with pre-existing dislocations exhibited a distinct annealing stage in positron lifetime between 800 and 1100 K corresponding to Cr-precipitation. During this stage, Transmission Electron Microscopy showed fine precipitates of average size 4 nm, dispersed throughout the sample and from EDS analysis they are found to be Cr-enriched. The existence of dislocations is found to be responsible for C…
Precipitation kinetics of Al3Zr and Al3Sc in aluminum supersaturated solid solutions is studied using cluster dynamics, a mesoscopic modeling technique which describes the various stages of homogeneous precipitation by a single set of rate equations. The only parameters needed are the interface free energy and the diffusion coefficient which are deduced from an atomic model previously developed to study the same alloys. A comparison with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations based on the vacancy diffusion mechanism shows that cluster dynamics correctly predicts the precipitation kinetics provided a …
A multidisciplinary approach is presented to analyse the precipitation process in a model Al-Cu alloy. Although this topic has been extensively studied in the past, most of the investigations are focussed either on transmission electron microscopy or on thermal analysis of the processes. The information obtained from these techniques cannot, however, provide a coherent picture of all the complex transformations that take place during decomposition of supersaturated solid solution. Thermal analysis, high resolution dilatometry, (high resolution) transmission electron microscopy and density func…
Strengthening in age-hardenable alloys is mainly achieved through nano-scale precipitates whose formation paths from the atomic-scale, solute-enriched entities are rarely analyzed and understood in a directly-verifiable way. Here, we discover a pathway for the earliest-stage precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys: solute clustering leading to three successive variants of FCC clusters, followed by the formation of non-FCC $GP$-$zones$. The clusters, which originally assume a spherical morphology ($C1$), evolve into elongated clusters and orient themselves on $\{111\}_{Al}$ ($C2$) and subsequently on …
The grain boundary (GB) microchemistry and precipitation behaviour in high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys has an important influence on their mechanical and electrochemical properties. Simulation of the GB segregation, precipitation, and solute distribution in these alloys requires an accurate description of the thermodynamics and kinetics of this multi-component system. CALPHAD databases have been successfully developed for equilibrium thermodynamic calculations in complex multi-component systems, and in recent years have been combined with diffusion simulations. In this work, we have directly i…
One usual way to strengthen a metal is to add alloying elements and to control the size and the density of the precipitates obtained. However, precipitation in multicomponent alloys can take complex pathways depending on the relative diffusivity of solute atoms and on the relative driving forces involved. In Al-Zr-Sc alloys, atomic simulations based on first-principle calculations combined with various complementary experimental approaches working at different scales reveal a strongly inhomogeneous structure of the precipitates: owing to the much faster diffusivity of Sc compared with Zr in th…
Zr and Sc precipitate in aluminum alloys to form the Al\_3Zr\_xSc\_{1-x} compound which, for low supersaturations of the solid solution, exhibits the L1\_2 structure. The aim of the present study is to model at an atomic scale the kinetics of precipitation and to build mesoscopic models so as to extend the range of supersaturations and annealing times that can be simulated up to values of practical interest. In this purpose, we use some ab initio calculations and experimental data to fit an Ising type model describing thermodynamics of the Al-Zr-Sc system. Kinetics of precipitation are studied…
A high-throughput methodology is proposed, based on the combination of diffusion couples and advanced nanomechanical testing methods, to directly measure alloying effects on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of individual deformation modes in Mg alloys. The methodology is tested in Mg-Zn alloys by assessing the alloying effects, up to Zn contents of 2 at.%, on basal slip, extension twining and pyramidal slip in two metallurgical condition: as-quenched, for which the Zn solute atoms remain homogenously dispersed in solid solution; and peak-aged, for which the Zn atoms form rod-shape $Mg…
Precipitation during high temperature aging of Al-Cu alloys is analyzed by means of the integration of classical nucleation theory and phase-field simulations into a multiscale modelling approach based on well-established thermodynamics principles. In particular, thermal stability of $θ''$, $θ'$ and $θ$ precipitates was assessed from first principles calculations of the Helmholtz free energy while homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of $θ''$ and $θ'$ was analysed using classical nucleation theory. Precipitate growth was finally computed by means of mesoscopic phase-field model. The model …
The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interactions were analyzed in an Al-Cu alloy containing a homogeneous dispersion of $θ'$ precipitates by means of discrete dislocation dynamics simulations. The simulations were carried out within the framework of the discrete-continuous method and the precipitates were assumed to be impenetrable by dislocations. The main parameters that determine the dislocation/precipitate interactions (elastic mismatch, stress-free transformation strains, dislocation mobility and cross-slip rate) were obtained from atomistic simulations, while the size, shape, spati…
The composition, crystal structure and precipitation crystallography of a newly found precipitate are characterized by a Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The composition of the plate-like precipitate could be expressed as MgxAl2-xGd (x = 0.38), and its crystal structure is the same as the fcc type Laves phases Mg2Gd and Al2Gd with the lattice parameter of 7.92 Angstrom (space group No. 227, Fd-3m). The orientation relationship between the matrix and precipitate is found to be (0001)m // (111)p and [10-10]m // [1-10]p, and the habit plane is parallel to (0001)m // …
We use first principles calculations to study the influence of thermomechanical loads on the energetics of precipitation in magnesium-aluminum alloys. Using Density Functional Theory simulations, we present expressions of the energy of magnesium-aluminum binary solid solutions as a function of concentration, strain and temperature. Additionally, from these calculations, we observe an increase in equilibrium volume (and hence the equilibrium lattice constants) with the increase in concentration of magnesium. We also observe an increase in the cohesive energy of solutions with increase in concen…
Understanding the composition evolution of grain boundaries and grain boundary precipitation at near-atomic scale in aluminum alloys is crucial to tailor mechanical properties and to increase resistance to corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Here, we elucidate the sequence of precipitation on grain boundaries in comparison to the bulk in a model Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. We investigate the material from the solution heat treated state (475{\textdegree}C), through the very early stages of aging to the peak aged state at 120{\textdegree}C and further into the overaged regime at 180{\textdegree}C. …
Age hardening induced by the formation of (semi)-coherent precipitate phases is crucial for the processing and final properties of the widely used Al-6000 alloys. Early stages of precipitation are particularly important from the fundamental and technological side, but are still far from being fully understood. Here, an analysis of the energetics of nanometric precipitates of the meta-stable $β''$ phases is performed, identifying the bulk, elastic strain and interface energies that contribute to the stability of a nucleating cluster. Results show that needle-shape precipitates are unstable to g…
The Ni-based superalloy Alloy 718 is used in aircraft engines as high-pressure turbine discs and must endure challenging demands on high-temperature yield strength, creep-, and oxidation-resistance. Nanoscale $γ^{\prime}$- and $γ^{\prime \prime}$-precipitates commonly found in duplet and triplet co-precipitate morphologies provide high-temperature strength under these harsh operating conditions. Direct ageing of Alloy 718 is an attractive alternative manufacturing route known to increase the yield strength at 650 $^°$C by at least +10 $\%$, by both retaining high dislocation densities and chan…
The precipitation microstructure of the γ' (AlAg2) intermetallic phase has been examined in aluminium-silver-copper alloys. The microstructure developed in an Al-0.90at.%Ag-0.90at.%Cu alloy was significantly different from that reported for binary Al-Ag alloys. The orientation relationship between the matrix and precipitate was unchanged; however, the γ' phase formed as aggregates with a two-dimensional open assemblies. Each such assembly contained two variants of the γ' phase alternately arranged to form a faceted elliptical unit. The θ' (Al2Cu) phase formed on these assemblies after further …
The development of new engineering alloy chemistries is a time consuming and iterative process. A necessary step is characterization of the nano/microstructure to provide a link between the processing and properties of each alloy chemistry considered. One approach to accelerate the identification of optimal chemistries is to use samples containing a gradient in composition, ie. combinatorial samples, and to investigate many different chemistries at the same time. However, for engineering alloys, the final properties depend not only on chemistry but also on the path of microstructure developmen…
The earlier-developed ab initio model and the kinetic Monte Carlo method (KMCM) are used to simulate precipitation in a number of iron-copper alloys with different copper concentrations x and temperatures T. The same simulations are also made using the improved version of the earlier-suggested stochastic statistical method (SSM). The results obtained enable us to make a number of general conclusions about the dependencies of the decomposition kinetics in Fe-Cu alloys on x and T. We also show that the SSM describes the precipitation kinetics in a fair agreement with the KMCM, and employing the …

Segregation, precipitation, and phase separation in Fe-Cr systems is investigated. Monte Carlo simulations using semiempirical interatomic potential, first-principles total energy calculations, and experimental spectroscopy are used. In order to obtain a general picture of the relation of the atomic interactions and properties of Fe-Cr alloys in bulk, surface, and interface regions several complementary methods has to be used. Using Exact Muffin-Tin Orbitals method the effective chemical potential as a function of Cr content (0-15 at.% Cr) is calculated for a surface, second atomic layer and b…
High-temperature, high-dose, neutron irradiation of W results in the formation of Re-rich clusters at concentrations one order of magnitude lower than the thermodynamic solubility limit. These clusters may eventually transform into brittle W-Re intermetallic phases, which can lead to high levels of hardening and thermal conductivity losses. Standard theories of radiation enhanced diffusion and precipitation cannot explain the formation of these precipitates and so understanding the mechanism by which nonequilibrium clusters form under irradiation is crucial to predict materials degradation and…
Radiation-enhanced precipitation of Cr-rich α' in irradiated Fe-Cr alloys, which results in hardening and embrittlement, depends on the irradiating particle and the displacement per atom (dpa) rate. Here, we utilize a Cahn-Hilliard phase-field based approach, that includes simple models for nucleation, irradiating particle and rate dependent radiation-enhanced diffusion and cascade mixing to simulate α' evolution under neutrons, heavy ions, and electron irradiations. Different irradiating particles manifest very different cascade mixing efficiencies. The model was calibrated using neutron data…
The effect of pre-ageing deformation on the size and distribution of beta-prime precipitates and subsequently on the resulting strength and ductility have been measured in a Mg-3.0at.%Zn-0.5at.%Y alloy. The alloy was extruded and then subjected to a T8 heat treatment comprised of a solution-treatment, cold-work and artificial ageing. Extrusion was used to introduce texture, ensuring that deformation occurred via slip rather than twinning. Samples were subjected to controlled uniaxial deformation and then isothermally aged to peak hardness. Precipitate length, diameter and number density were m…
While lean Mg-Zn-Ca alloys are promising materials for temporary implants, questions remain on the impact of Zn and Ca. In this context, the precipitation in Mg-1.5Zn-0.25Ca (ZX20, in wt.%) was investigated upon linear heating from about room temperature to 400 C, with a particular focus on the debated ternary precipitate phase. Three exothermic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) peaks were observed at 125, 250 and 320 C. The microstructure at the end of these peaks (205, 260 and 350 C) was probed in a multiscale correlative approach using atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission elec…
The softening and strengthening contributions in pre-deformed and aged Al-Mg-Cu alloys containing 3wt.%Mg and 0.5wt.%Cu are evaluated by a combination of microscopy, mechanical testing and modelling. A refined phenomenological model for the work hardening response, accounting for the separate effects of recovery and precipitation, is shown to be suitable for an unambiguous determination of the precipitation hardening contribution in these alloys. Significantly, it is found that the mechanical response of these alloys is not strongly impacted by Cu content (in the low Cu content regime), pre-de…
Al-Mg-Si alloys with total solute contents ranging from 0.8 to 1.4 wt.% were solutionised, quenched and then artificially aged (AA) at 180 °C, after which positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to obtain information about precipitation and vacancy evolution during preceding ageing. Hardness and electrical resistivity measurements were carried out to complement these measurements. AA was carried out in four different heating media, which allowed for varying the heating rate from 2.4 K/s to 170 K/s. The main result of the study is that there is a competition between vacancy loss…
The combined strengthening effects of grain refinement and high precipitated volume fraction (~6at.%) on the mechanical properties of FeSiTi alloy subjected to SPD processing prior to aging treatment were investigated by atom probe tomography and scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was shown that the refinement of the microstructure affects the precipitation kinetics and the spatial distribution of the secondary hardening intermetallic phase, which was observed to nucleate heterogeneously on dislocations and sub-grain boundaries. It was revealed that alloys successively subjected to …
Kinetics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of copper precipitates under electron irradiation of Fe_{1-x}Cu_x alloys at concentrations x from 0.06 at.% to 0.4 at.% and temperatures T from 290 to 450C is studied using the kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations and the statistical theory of nucleation (STN). The conventional assumption about the similarity of mechanisms of precipitation under electron irradiation and during thermal aging is adopted. The earlier-developed ab initio model of interactions in Fe-Cu alloys is used for both the KMC simulations and the STN calculations. Values of the …
We present an extension of the semi-grandcanonical (SGC) ensemble that we refer to as the variance-constrained semi-grandcanonical (VC-SGC) ensemble. It allows for transmutation Monte Carlo simulations of multicomponent systems in multiphase regions of the phase diagram and lends itself to scalable simulations on massively parallel platforms. By combining transmutation moves with molecular dynamics steps structural relaxations and thermal vibrations in realistic alloys can be taken into account. In this way, we construct a robust and efficient simulation technique that is ideally suited for la…
Research over the years has shown that the formation of the Fe$_3$Si phase in FINEMET (Fe-Si-Nb-B-Cu) alloys leads to superior soft magnetic properties. In this work, we use a CALPHAD approach to derive Fe-Si phase diagrams to identify the composition-temperature domain where the Fe$_3$Si phase can be stabilized. Thereafter, we have developed a precipitation model capable of simulating the nucleation and growth of Fe$_3$Si nanocrystals via Langer-Schwartz theory. For optimum magnetic properties, prior work suggests that it is desirable to precipitate Fe$_3$Si nanocrystals with 10-15 nm diamete…
Due to their high strength and advantageous high-temperature properties, tungsten-based alloys are being considered as plasma-facing candidate materials in fusion devices. Under neutron irradiation, rhenium, which is produced by nuclear transmutation, has been found to precipitate in elongated precipitates forming thermodynamic intermetallic phases at concentrations well below the solubility limit. Recent measurements have shown that Re precipitation can lead to substantial hardening, which may have a detrimental effect on the fracture toughness of W alloys. This puzzle of sub-solubility preci…

The microstructure of the commercial alloy AA2195 was investigated on the nano-scale after conducting a T8 tempering. This particular thermo-mechanical treatment of the specimen resulted in the formation of platelet-shaped $T_{1}$ ($Al_{2}CuLi$)/ $θ^{'}$($Al_{2}Cu$) within the Al-matrix. The electrochemically prepared samples were analyzed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography for chemical mapping. The $θ^{'}$ platelets, which are less than 2 nm thick, have the stoichiometric composition consistent with the expected ($Al_{2}Cu$) equilibrium composition. Additio…
Short-range order (SRO) in Fe-rich Fe-Cr alloys is investigated by means of atomistic off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations in the semi-grand canonical ensemble using classical interatomic potentials. The SRO parameter defined by Cowley [Phys. Rev. B 77, 669 (1950)] is used to quantify the degree of ordering. In agreement with experiments a strong ordering tendency in the Cr distribution at low Cr concentrations (~< 5%) is observed, as manifested in negative values of the SRO parameters. For intermediate Cr concentrations (5% ~< c_Cr ~< 15%) the SRO parameter for the alpha-phase goes through a m…

Both continuously and discontinuously formed precipitates have been observed. The precipitates located inside the grains exhibit two different faceted shapes: tetrahedral and platelet-shaped precipitates. Dislocations accommodating the high misfit at the interface between the two phases have also been evidenced. Based …

What determines precipitate morphologies in co-precipitating alloy systems? We focus on alloys of two precipitating phases, with precipitates of the fast-precipitating phase acting as heterogeneous nucleation sites for a second phase manifesting slower kinetics. We study a FeCuMnNiSi alloy using the combination of atom probe tomography and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the interplay between interfacial and ordering energies, plus active diffusion paths, strongly affect the selection of core-shell verses appendage morphologies. Specifically, the ordering energy reduction of …

The integrity of irradiated zirconium based nuclear fuel cladding is related to the precipitation of hydrides which is closely connected with the solubility of hydrogen. A review on the development of measurement technologies is given and the resulting terminal solid solubilities are reflected with respect to the established model of hydrogen solubility in zirconium alloys. The results often allow for a different interpretation than the established model. An alternative qualitative approach is proposed in which the fixed TSSp for the precipitation of zirconium hydrides is replaced by a kinetic…

Precipitation of the γ' (AlAg2) phase was investigated in Al-Ag(-Cu) alloys using high resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Precipitation commenced with segregation of silver to stacking faults, followed by thickening in steps corresponding to single unit cell ledges. In conjunction with gradual segregation of silver and aluminium into ordered layers this yielded γ' phase platelets with a thickness of either 2 or 3x the AlAg2 c-lattice parameter. Plates with a thickness of 2 c(AlAg2) would not achieve self-accommodation of the shape strain …
A model for precipitation of the plate-shaped second-phase under applied stress is presented. The precipitates in the matrix-precipitate system are represented by their local volume fraction and an orientation parameter that defines the alignment of a precipitate platelet in a given direction. Kinetic equations, based on diffusion theory and classical nucleation theory, are used to describe the time evolution of these two parameters. The model is used to describe the stress orientation of hydrides in Zr-alloys in light of experiments.
