A model for precipitation of the plate-shaped second-phase under applied stress is presented. The precipitates in the matrix-precipitate system are represented by their local volume fraction and an orientation parameter that defines the alignment of a precipitate platelet in a given direction. Kinetic equations, based on diffusion theory and classical nucleation theory, are used to describe the time evolution of these two parameters. The model is used to describe the stress orientation of hydrides in Zr-alloys in light of experiments.
The effects of applied load on the formation and reorientation of delta hydrides in alpha-zirconium matrix are studied by a multiphase field model. Simulations with only one hydride seed indicate that the hydride reorientation occurs only when a tensile or compressive strain of ~0.02 is applied along [112-0] (hoop or circumferential direction) or [0001] (radial direction aligned with the basal pole direction), respectively. However, two-seed and multi-seed hydride simulations show the significant influence of neighboring hydrides on the required load for reorientation, reducing it by more than…
The anharmonic phenomena in Zirconium Hydrides and Deuterides, including ε-ZrH2, γ-ZrH, and γ-ZrD, have been investigated from aspects of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and lattice dynamics calculations within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The observed multiple sharp peaks below harmonic multi-phonon bands in the experimental spectra of all three materials did not show up in the simulated INS spectra based on the harmonic approximation, indicating the existence of strong anharmonicity in those materials and the necessity of further explanations. We present a detailed st…
Hydrogen embrittlement in Zr alloy fuel cladding is a primary safety concern for water based nuclear reactors. Here we investigated the stabilisation of planar defects within the forming hydrides by Sn, the primary alloying element of Zircaloy-4 used in the cladding. In order to explain formation of hydrides and planar defects observed in our experiments, we performed atomic-scale ab initio calculations focusing on the solute interactions with generalized stacking faults in hcp $α$-Zr and fcc zirconium hydrides. Our calculations showed that an increase in Sn concentration leads to a stabilisat…
The interaction of hydrogen and metals continues to be industrially relevant and is a critical part of creating and supporting a safety case for nuclear reactor operation. In the present work, we explore hydrogen storage and hydride formation in a zirconium alloy. We characterise the structure and interfaces of fine scale hydrides using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) including energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS/EDX), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and high-resolution STEM. Chemical characterisation is supported further with atom probe tomography (APT). Samples wer…
Zircaloy-4 is used as a fuel cladding material for water reactors, as it has good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and a low thermal neutron absorption cross section. However, the mechanical performance of Zircaloy-4 can be reduced during service due to hydrogen uptake and hydride formation. These hydrides are brittle, and often reduce the strength and toughness of materials as well as increase susceptibility to delayed hydride cracking (DHC). In this work, large grain Zircaloy-4 with hydrides was prepared and then cross sectioned using cryo-ion beam polishing, using plasma focused…
The long-term safety of water-based nuclear reactors relies in part on the reliability of zirconium-based nuclear fuel. Yet the progressive ingress of hydrogen during service makes zirconium alloys subject to delayed hydride cracking. Here, we use a combination of electron back-scattered diffraction and atom probe tomography to investigate specific microstructural features from the as-received sample and in the blocky-alpha microstructure, before and after electrochemical charging with hydrogen or deuterium followed by a low temperature heat treatment at 400C for 5 hours followed by furnace co…
Zirconium and its alloys are extensively used as cladding material in nuclear reactors. They are vulnerable to hydrogen degradation under the harsh service conditions of the reactors, which necessitates continuous monitoring for the hydride concentration. The presence of hydride denuded zones in the latter stages of the pressure tube's life hinders the monitoring process, which is carried out by scrape samples taken from the surface of pressure tubes. We investigated the effect of oxygen on diffusivity of hydrogen in hcp-Zr, to check the hypothesis that oxygen slows the diffusion of hydrogen a…
Climate change motivates the search for non-carbon-emitting energy generation and storage solutions. Metal hydrides show promising characteristics for this purpose. They can be further stabilized by tailoring the negative pressure of microstructural and structural defects. Using systematic ab initio and atomistic simulations, we demonstrate that an enhancement in the formation of hydrides at the negatively pressurized crack tip region is feasible by increasing the mechanical tensile load on the specimen. The theoretical predictions have been used to reassess and interpret atom probe tomography…

A variety of chromate-free conversion coatings are being actively investigated to improve the corrosion performance of light-weight alloys for aerospace and defense applications. Advancing conversion coating, however, requires an in-depth understanding of the underlying corrosion mechanisms in order to rationally design sustainable coatings. Here, we present a multiscale modeling approach to predict corrosion performance of metallic materials, with a focus on localized corrosion of Cu-containing aluminum alloys coated with ZrO2 layer. First-principles and transition-state theory are used to im…

In this present investigation, we discussed the synthesis, microstructure, and hydrogen storage behavior intermetallic Laves phase in a hexanal TiVZrMnCoFe high entropy alloy. In this HEA, three elements are hydride-forming elements and the other three are non-hydride-forming elements (Fe, Mn, Co). The thermodynamic parameter like enthalpy of mixing was calculated using Meidmas model. The possibility of developing high entropy Laves phase-based hydrogen storage materials was advocated.
Despite high interest in compact and safe storage of hydrogen in the solid-state hydride form, the design of alloys that can reversibly and quickly store hydrogen at room temperature under pressures close to atmospheric pressure is a long-lasting challenge. In this study, first-principles calculations are combined with experiments to develop high-entropy alloys (HEAs) for room-temperature hydrogen storage. TixZr2-xCrMnFeNi (x = 0.4-1.6) alloys with the Laves phase structure and low hydrogen binding energies of -0.1 to -0.15 eV are designed and synthesized. The HEAs reversibly store hydrogen in…
The interactions between δ-hydrides and plastic slip in a commercial zirconium alloy, Zircaloy-4, under stress were studied using in situ secondary electron microscope (SEM) micropillar compression tests of single crystal samples and ex situ digital image correlation (DIC) macroscale tensile tests of polycrystalline samples. The hydrides decorate near basal planes in orientation, and for micropillars orientated for <a> basal slip localised shear at the hydride-matrix interface is favoured over slip in α-Zr matrix due to a lower shear stress required. In contrast, for pillars oriented for <a> p…
Machine learning to explore high-entropy alloys with desired enthalpy for room-temperature hydrogen storage: Prediction of density functional theory and experimental data
A three-stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor (MHHC) system based in AB2-type alloys has been set-up. Every stage can be considered as a Sieverts-type apparatus. The MHHC system can work in the pressure and temperature ranges comprised from vacuum to 250 bar and from RT to 200C, respectively. An efficient thermal management system was set up for the operational ranges of temperature designed. It dumps temperature shifts due to hydrogen expansion during stage coupling and hydrogen absorption/desorption in the alloys. Each reactor consists of a single and thin stainless-steel tube to maximize …
The corrosion potential of commercially pure titanium in NaCl solutions is dramatically affected by trace Fe additions, which cause the appearance of submicron pockets of \b{eta} phase at grain boundary triple points. Furthermore, the low solubility of hydrogen in hexagonal close-packed α-Ti makes titanium alloys prone to subsequent hydride-associated failures due to stress corrosion cracking. We analyzed α-α and α-\b{eta} sections of the abutting grain boundary of a \b{eta} pocket in a Grade 2 CP-Ti, and the α-\b{eta} phase boundary. Fe and H partition to \b{eta} and segregate at the grain bo…
Ingress of hydrogen is often linked to catastrophic failure of Ti-alloys. Here, we quantify the hydrogen distribution in fully \b{eta} and α+\b{eta} Ti-Mo alloys by using atom probe tomography. Hydrogen does not segregate at grain boundaries in the fully \b{eta} sample but segregates at some α/\b{eta} phase boundaries with a composition exceeding 20 at.% in the α+\b{eta} sample. No stable hydrides were observed in either sample. The hydrogen concentration in \b{eta} phases linearly decreases from ~13 at. % to ~4 at. % with increasing Mo-content, which is ascribed to the suppression of hydrogen…
At 300 K, Y$_{0.9}$Gd$_{0.1}$Fe$_{2}$H$_{x}$ hydrides crystallize sequentially with increasing H concentration in various structures related to a lowering of the cubic MgCu$_{2}$ type structure of the parent alloy: cubic C1, monoclinic M1, cubic C2, monoclinic M2, cubic C3, orthorhombic O. Above 300 K, they undergo a first-order transition at a T$_{O-D}$ temperature driven by order-disorder of hydrogen atoms into interstitial sites. Their magnetic, structural and magnetocaloric properties have been investigated through magnetic measurements, and high-resolution synchrotron diffraction experime…
We present a kinetic model for solid state phase transformation (alpha<-->beta) of common zirconium alloys used as fuel cladding material in light water reactors. The model computes the relative amounts of beta or alpha phase fraction as a function of time or temperature in the alloys. The model accounts for the influence of excess oxygen (due to oxidation) and hydrogen concentration (due to hydrogen pickup) on phase transformation kinetics. Two variants of the model denoted by A and B are presented. Model A is suitable for simulation of laboratory experiments in which the heating/cooling rate…

The use of hydrogen as a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels requires a suite of flammability mitigating technologies, particularly robust sensors for hydrogen leak detection and concentration monitoring. To this end, we have developed a class of lightweight optical hydrogen sensors based on a metasurface of Pd nano-patchy particle arrays, which fulfills the increasing requirements of a safe hydrogen fuel sensing system with no risk of sparking. The structure of the optical sensor is readily nano-engineered to yield extraordinarily rapid response to hydrogen gas (<3 s at 1 mbar H$_…
Materials with an allotropic phase transformation can result in the formation of microstructures where grains have orientation relationships (ORs) determined by the transformation history. These microstructures influence the final material properties. In zirconium alloys, there is a solid-state body centred cubic (BCC) to hexagonal close packed (HCP) phase transformation, where the crystal orientations of the HCP phase can be related to the parent BCC structure via the Burgers orientation relationship (BOR). In the present work, we adapt a reconstruction code developed for steels which uses a …
Titanium alloys can suffer from halide-associated stress corrosion cracking at elevated temperatures e.g., in jet engines, where chlorides and Ti-oxide promote the cracking of water vapour in the gas stream, depositing embrittling species at the crack tip. Here we report, using isotopically-labelled experiments, that crack tips in an industrial Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo alloy are strongly enriched (>5 at.%) in oxygen from the water vapour, far greater than the amounts (0.25 at.%) required to embrittle the material. Surprisingly, relatively little hydrogen (deuterium) is measured, despite careful prep…
In the use of hydrogen as large-scale energy vector, metal hydrides based on intermetallic compounds play a key role, thanks to mild temperatures and pressures required for the storage. It is increasingly necessary to develop hydrogen-based devices, and in this work, the intermetallic compound TiFe$_{0.85}$Mn$_{0.05}$ is evaluated and selected as H$_2$-carrier for a storage system of 50 kg of H$_2$. A batch of 5 kg of alloy was synthesized at industrial level and characterized through scanning electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction, to determine the structure and phase abundance. Mor…

Clathrate hydride \emph{Fm}\={3}\emph{m}-LaH$_{10}$ has been proven as the most extraordinary superconductor with the critical temperature $T_c$ above 250 K upon compression of hundreds of GPa in recent years. A general hope is to reduce the stabilization pressure and maintain the high $T_c$ value of the specific phase in LaH$_{10}$. However, strong structural instability distorts \emph{Fm}\={3}\emph{m} structure and leads to a rapid decrease of $T_c$ at low pressures. Here, we investigate the phase stability and superconducting behaviors of \emph{Fm}\={3}\emph{m}-LaH$_{10}$ with enhanced chem…
