We present a direct mapping between the quantum optomechanical problem of the atoms harmonically trapped in the vicinity of a chiral waveguide and a generalized quantum Rabi model and discuss the analogy between the self-organization of atomic chains in photonic structures and Dicke-like quantum phase transitions in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We extend the class of the superradiant phase transitions for the systems possessing $\mathbb{Z}_3$ rather than parity $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and demonstrate the emergence of the multicomponent Schrodinger cat ground states in these systems.
We develop a rigorous theoretical framework for interaction-induced phenomena in the waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) driven by mechanical oscillations of the qubits. Specifically, we predict that the simplest set-up of two qubits, harmonically trapped over an optical waveguide, enables the ultrastrong coupling regime of the quantum optomechanical interaction. Moreover, the combination of the inherent open nature of the system and the strong optomechanical coupling leads to emerging parity-time (\PT) symmetry, quite unexpected for a purely quantum system without artificially engineered …
The mechanical properties of light have found widespread use in the manipulation of gas-phase atoms and ions, helping create new states of matter and realize complex quantum interactions. The field of cavity-optomechanics strives to scale this interaction to much larger, even human-sized mechanical objects. Going beyond the canonical Fabry-Perot cavity with a movable mirror, here we explore a new paradigm in which multiple cavity-optomechanical elements are wired together to form optomechanical circuits. Using a pair of optomechanical cavities coupled together via a phonon waveguide we demonst…
Optomechanical devices sensitively transduce and actuate motion of nanomechanical structures using light. Single--crystal diamond promises to improve the performance of optomechanical devices, while also providing opportunities to interface nanomechanics with diamond color center spins and related quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate dissipative waveguide--optomechanical coupling exceeding 35 GHz/nm to diamond nanobeams supporting both optical waveguide modes and mechanical resonances, and use this optomechanical coupling to measure nanobeam displacement with a sensitivity of $9.5$ fm/$\s…
We present the basic ingredients of continuum optomechanics, i.e. the suitable extension of cavity-optomechanical concepts to the interaction of photons and phonons in an extended waveguide. We introduce a real-space picture and argue which coupling terms may arise in leading order in the spatial derivatives. This picture allows us to discuss quantum noise, dissipation, and the correct boundary conditions at the waveguide entrance. The connections both to optomechanical arrays as well as to the theory of Brillouin scattering in waveguides are highlighted. We identify the 'strong coupling regim…
We explore the possibility of achieving a significant nonlinear phase shift among photons propagating in nanoscale waveguides exploiting interactions among photons that are mediated by vibrational modes and induced through Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). We introduce a configuration that allows slowing down the photons by several orders of magnitude via SBS involving sound waves and two pump fields. We extract the conditions for maintaining vanishing amplitude gain or loss for slowly propagating photons while keeping the influence of thermal phonons to the minimum. The nonlinear phase a…
We investigate polariton-phonon hybrid excitations, which describe the collective excitations of emitter-photon polaritons and vibrational phonons, in a periodic array of vibrating two-level emitters interacting with waveguide photons. We demonstrate the emergence of an interaction-induced quasiperiodic structure caused by the interplay between phonon scatterings and waveguide-mediated long-range couplings. This quasiperiodicity fundamentally changes the excitation characteristics in the subradiant regime, which feature an appearance of topological edge states and a transition between ergodic …
Optomechanical gradient forces arise from evanescent fields of guided waves in parallel photonic waveguides. When designed to be of attractive nature, they increase exponentially as the gap between the waveguides decreases. Moreover, the amplitude of the gradient force can be well controlled due to its linear dependence on the input laser power. Here, we propose to exploit the intrinsic nonlinear nature of the optomechanical gradient force to induce a tunable 3-wave coupling between the fundamental modes of two doubly clamped nanophotonic beams. For one of the beams having half the width of th…
We numerically study silicon waveguides on silica showing that it is possible to simultaneously guide optical and acoustic waves in the technologically important silicon on insulator (SOI) material system. Thin waveguides, or fins, exhibit geometrically softened mechanical modes at gigahertz frequencies with phase velocities below the Rayleigh velocity in glass, eliminating acoustic radiation losses. We propose slot waveguides on glass with telecom optical frequencies and strong radiation pressure forces resulting in Brillouin gains on the order of 500 and 50,000 1/(Wm) for backward and forwar…
So far, Brillouin scattering and cavity optomechanics were mostly disconnected branches of research -- although both deal with photon-phonon coupling. This begs for the development of a broader theory that contains both fields. Here, we derive the dynamics of optomechanical cavities from that of Brillouin-active waveguides. This explicit transition elucidates the link between phenomena such as Brillouin amplification and electromagnetically induced transparency. It proves that effects familiar from cavity optomechanics all have traveling-wave partners, but not vice versa. We reveal a close con…
Imposing chirality on a physical system engenders unconventional energy flow and responses, such as the Aharonov-Bohm effect and the topological quantum Hall phase for electrons in a symmetry-breaking magnetic field. Recently, great interest has arisen in combining that principle with broken Hermiticity to explore novel topological phases and applications. Here, we report unique phononic states formed when combining the controlled breaking of time-reversal symmetry with non-Hermitian dynamics, both induced through time-modulated radiation pressure forces in small nano-optomechanical networks. …
One-dimensional lattices with chiral symmetry are known to possess quantized Zak phase and nontrivial topological phases. Here it is shown that quantized Zak phase and nontrivial edge states, partially protected by inversion symmetry rather than chiral symmetry, can be observed and probed in the bulk exploiting continuous-time photonic quantum walk in zig-zag waveguide arrays. Averaged beam displacement measurements can detect quantized Zak phase and non-trivial topological phases in the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with broken chiral symmetry.
We propose a scalable architecture for a quantum network based on a simple on-chip photonic circuit that performs loss-tolerant two-qubit measurements. The circuit consists of two quantum emitters positioned in the arms of an on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometer composed of waveguides with chiral light--matter interfaces. The efficient chiral light--matter interaction allows the emitters to perform high-fidelity intranode two-qubit parity measurements within a single chip, and to emit photons to generate internode entanglement, without any need for reconfiguration. We show that by connecting mu…
We consider a two-dimensional extension of the 1D waveguide quantum electrodynamics and investigate the nature of linear excitations in two-dimensional arrays of qubits coupled to networks of chiral waveguides. We show that the combined effects of chirality and long-range photon mediated qubit-qubit interactions lead to the emergence of the two-dimensional flat bands in the polaritonic spectrum, corresponding to slow strongly correlated light.
Chiral light-matter interaction between photonic nanostructures with quantum emitters shows great potential to implement spin-photon interfaces for quantum information processing. Position-dependent spin momentum locking of the quantum emitter is important for these chiral coupled nanostructures. Here, we report the position-dependent chiral coupling between quantum dots (QDs) and cross waveguides both numerically and experimentally. Four quantum dots distributed at different positions in the cross section are selected to characterize the chiral properties of the device. Directional emission i…
Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter determ…
Confining photons in cavities enhances the interactions between light and matter. In cavity optomechanics, this enables a wealth of phenomena ranging from optomechanically induced transparency to macroscopic objects cooled to their motional ground state. Previous work in cavity optomechanics employed devices where ubiquitous structural disorder played no role beyond perturbing resonance frequencies and quality factors. More generally, the interplay between disorder, which must be described by statistical physics, and optomechanical effects has thus far been unexplored. Here, we demonstrate how…
We present a piezoelectric transducer in thin-film lithium niobate that converts a 1.7 GHz microwave signal to a mechanical wave in a single mode of a 1 micron-wide waveguide. We measure a -12 dB conversion efficiency that is limited by material loss. The design method we employ is widely applicable to the transduction of wavelength-scale structures used in emerging phononic circuits like those at the heart of many optomechanical microwave-to-optical quantum converters.
Fano resonance appears for conduction through an electron waveguide containing donor impurities. In this work, we consider the thin-film conducting chiral helimagnet (CCH) as the donor impurity in a one-dimensional waveguide model. Due to the spin spiral coupling, interference between the direct and intersubband transmission channels gives rise to spin-dependent Fano resonance effect. The spin-dependent Fano resonance is sensitively dependent on the helicity of the spiral. By tuning the CCH potential well depth and the incident energy, this provides a potential way to detect the spin structure…
We theoretically investigate the collective excitation of multiple (sub)millimeter-sized ferromagnets mediated by waveguide photons. By the position of the magnets in the waveguide, the magnon-photon coupling can be tuned to be chiral, i.e., magnons only couple with photons propagating in one direction, leading to asymmetric transfer of angular momentum and energy between the magnets. A large imbalance in the magnon number distribution over the magnets can be achieved with a long chain of magnets, which concentrate at one edge. The chain also supports standing waves with low radiation efficien…
Chiral light-matter interactions can enable polarization to control the direction of light emission in a photonic device. Most realizations of chiral light-matter interactions require external magnetic fields to break time-reversal symmetry of the emitter. One way to eliminate this requirement is to utilize strong spin-orbit coupling present in transition metal dichalcogenides that exhibit a valley dependent polarized emission. Such interactions were previously reported using plasmonic waveguides, but these structures exhibit short propagation lengths due to loss. Chiral dielectric structures …
In quantum optics, it is common to assume that atoms are point-like objects compared to the wavelength of the electromagnetic field they interact with. However, this dipole approximation is not always valid, e.g., if atoms couple to the field at multiple discrete points. Previous work has shown that superconducting qubits coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide can behave as such "giant atoms" and then can interact through the waveguide without decohering, a phenomenon that is not possible with small atoms. Here, we show that this decoherence-free interaction is also possible when the coupling …
We report on the experimental study and numerical analysis of chiral light-matter coupling in deterministically fabricated quantum dot (QD) waveguide structures. We apply in-situ electron beam lithography to deterministically integrate single InGaAs/GaAs QDs into GaAs-DBR waveguides to systematically explore the dependence of chiral coupling on the position of the QD inside the waveguide. By a series of micro-photoluminescence measurements, we determine the directionality contrast of emission into left and right traveling waveguide modes revealing a maximum of 0.93 for highly off-center QDs an…
