Optomechanical gradient forces arise from evanescent fields of guided waves in parallel photonic waveguides. When designed to be of attractive nature, they increase exponentially as the gap between the waveguides decreases. Moreover, the amplitude of the gradient force can be well controlled due to its linear dependence on the input laser power. Here, we propose to exploit the intrinsic nonlinear nature of the optomechanical gradient force to induce a tunable 3-wave coupling between the fundamental modes of two doubly clamped nanophotonic beams. For one of the beams having half the width of the other beam, the 1:2 internal resonance between the fundamental modes supports degenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). We theoretically explore the main feature of the dissipative phase diagram of the underlying degenerate parametric oscillator model to show that the critical point of the SPDC occurs at parameters which are well in reach of state-of-the-art experiments.
Diamond integrated photonic devices are promising candidates for emerging applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. Here we demonstrate active modulation of diamond nanophotonic circuits by exploiting mechanical degrees of freedom in free-standing diamond electro-optomechanical resonators. We obtain high quality factors up to 9600, allowing us to read out the driven nanomechanical response with integrated optical interferometers with high sensitivity. We are able to excite higher order mechanical modes up to 115 MHz and observe the nanomechanical response also under ambient conditions.
Stimulated Brillouin scattering was recently observed in nanoscale silicon waveguides. Surprisingly, thermally-driven photon-phonon conversion in these structures had not yet been reported. Here, we inject an optical probe in a suspended silicon waveguide and measure its phase fluctuations at the output. We observe mechanical resonances around 8 GHz with a scattering efficiency of $10^{-5} \, \text{m}^{-1}$ and a signal-to-noise ratio of 2. The observations are in agreement with a theory of noise in these waveguides as well as with stimulated measurements. Our scheme may simplify measurements …
Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter determ…
We develop a systematic method for deriving a quantum optical multi-mode Hamiltonian for the interaction of photons and phonons in nanophotonic dielectric materials by applying perturbation theory to the electromagnetic Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian covers radiation pressure and electrostrictive interactions on equal footing. As a paradigmatic example, we apply our method to a cylindrical nanoscale waveguide, and derive a Hamiltonian description of Brillouin quantum optomechanics. We show analytically that in nanoscale waveguides radiation pressure dominates over electrostriction, in agreement …
The mechanical properties of light have found widespread use in the manipulation of gas-phase atoms and ions, helping create new states of matter and realize complex quantum interactions. The field of cavity-optomechanics strives to scale this interaction to much larger, even human-sized mechanical objects. Going beyond the canonical Fabry-Perot cavity with a movable mirror, here we explore a new paradigm in which multiple cavity-optomechanical elements are wired together to form optomechanical circuits. Using a pair of optomechanical cavities coupled together via a phonon waveguide we demonst…
Nanophotonic optomechanical devices allow observation of nanoscale vibrations with sensitivity that has dramatically advanced metrology of nanomechanical structures [1-9] and has the potential to impact studies of nanoscale physical systems in a similar manner [10, 11]. Here we demonstrate this potential with a nanophotonic optomechanical torque magnetometer and radiofrequency (RF) magnetic susceptometer. Exquisite readout sensitivity provided by a nanocavity integrated within a torsional nanomechanical resonator enables observations of the unique net magnetization and RF-driven responses of s…
The scattering of a linear wave on an optical event horizon, induced by a cross polarized soliton, is experimentally and numerically investigated in integrated structures. The experiments are performed in a dispersion-engineered birefringent silicon nanophotonic waveguide. In stark contrast with co-polarized waves, the large difference between the group velocity of the two cross-polarized waves enables a frequency conversion almost independent on the soliton wavelength. It is shown that the generated idler is only shifted by 10 nm around 1550 nm over a pump tuning range of 350 nm. Simulations …
We report enhanced optomechanical coupling by embedding a nano-mechanical beam resonator within an optical race-track resonator. Precise control of the mechanical resonator is achieved by clamping the beam between two low-loss photonic crystal waveguide couplers. The low insertion loss and the rigid mechanical support provided by the couplers yield both high mechanical and optical Q-factors for improved signal quality.
Nanophononics has the potential for information transfer, in an analogous manner to its photonic and electronic counterparts. The adoption of phononic systems has been limited, due to difficulties associated with the generation, manipulation, and detection of phonons, especially at GHz frequencies. Existing techniques often require piezoelectric materials with an external radiofrequency excitation that are not readily integrated into existing CMOS infrastructures, while non-piezoelectric demonstrations have been inefficient. In this work, we explore the optomechanical generation of coherent ph…
The ultra-short range force, van der Waals force (VWF), will rise rapidly when one nanoscale waveguide is close to another one, and be stronger than the external transverse gradient force (TGF). We theoretically investigate the giant influence of the VWF on the device performance in a typical optomechanical system consisting of a suspended silicon waveguide and a silica substrate including waveguide deformation stiction and failure mechanism. The device shows unique optically-activated plastic/elastic behaviors and stiction due to the VWF. When the input optical power is above the critical pow…
Atoms coupled to nanophotonic interfaces represent an exciting frontier for the investigation of quantum light-matter interactions. While most work has considered the interaction between statically positioned atoms and light, here we demonstrate that a wealth of phenomena can arise from the self-consistent interaction between atomic internal states, optical scattering, and atomic forces. We consider in detail the case of atoms coupled to a one-dimensional nanophotonic waveguide, and show that this interplay gives rise to self-organization of atomic positions along the waveguide, which can be p…
Future scalable photonic quantum information processing relies on the ability of integrating multiple interacting quantum emitters into a single chip. Quantum dots provide ideal on-chip quantum light sources. However, achieving quantum interaction between multiple quantum dots on-a-chip is a challenging task due to the randomness in their frequency and position, requiring local tuning technique and long-range quantum interaction. Here, we demonstrate quantum interactions between distant two quantum dots on a nanophotonic waveguide. We achieve a photon-mediated long-range interaction by integra…

The capability to embed self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) at predefined positions in nanophotonic structures is key to the development of complex quantum photonic architectures. Here, we demonstrate that QDs can be deterministically positioned in nanophotonic waveguides by pre-locating QDs relative to a global reference frame using micro-photoluminescence ($μ$PL) spectroscopy. After nanofabrication, $μ$PL images reveal misalignments between the central axis of the waveguide and the embedded QD of only $(9\pm46$) nm and $(1\pm33$) nm, for QDs embedded in undoped and doped membranes, respectivel…
We explore the possibility of achieving a significant nonlinear phase shift among photons propagating in nanoscale waveguides exploiting interactions among photons that are mediated by vibrational modes and induced through Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). We introduce a configuration that allows slowing down the photons by several orders of magnitude via SBS involving sound waves and two pump fields. We extract the conditions for maintaining vanishing amplitude gain or loss for slowly propagating photons while keeping the influence of thermal phonons to the minimum. The nonlinear phase a…
We extend the input-output formalism of quantum optics to analyze few-photon transport in waveguides with an embedded qubit. We provide explicit analytical derivations for one and two-photon scattering matrix elements based on operator equations in the Heisenberg picture.
We demonstrate a quantum nanophotonics platform based on germanium-vacancy (GeV) color centers in fiber-coupled diamond nanophotonic waveguides. We show that GeV optical transitions have a high quantum efficiency and are nearly lifetime-broadened in such nanophotonic structures. These properties yield an efficient interface between waveguide photons and a single GeV without the use of a cavity or slow-light waveguide. As a result, a single GeV center reduces waveguide transmission by $18 \pm 1\%$ on resonance in a single pass. We use a nanophotonic interferometer to perform homodyne detection …
In this paper, we have investigated the interplay between the second and third-order nonlinearities in lithium-niobate waveguides with strong waveguide dispersion using uniform and linearly-chirped poling patterns at input powers in the pico-joule range. We have implemented the accurate unidirectional pulse propagation model to take into account all the possible nonlinear interactions inside these structures. In particular, the poling period has been designed to quasi-phase-match single and multiple sum- and difference-frequency generation processes. We have shown how the poling period can be …
A comprehensive analysis of guided modes of a novel type of a planar Bragg reflection waveguide which consists of a low refractive index guiding layer sandwiched between two finite aperiodic mirrors is presented. The layers in the mirrors are aperiodically arranged according to the Kolakoski substitution rule. In such a waveguide light is confined inside the core by Bragg reflection from the mirrors, while dispersion characteristics of guided modes strongly depend on aperiodicity of the cladding. Using the transfer matrix formalism bandgap conditions, dispersion characteristics and mode profil…
Photonic devices exhibiting all-optically reconfigurable polarization dependence with a large dynamic range would be highly attractive for active polarization control. Here, we report that strongly polarization-selective nonlinear optomechanical interactions emerge in subwavelength waveguides. By using full-vectorial finite element analysis, we find that at certain core ellipticities (aspect ratios) the forward simulated light scattering mediated by a specific acoustic mode is eliminated for one polarization mode, whereas that for the other polarization mode is rather enhanced. This intriguing…
Controlling the flow of light by means of nanophotonic waveguides has the potential of transforming integrated information processing much in the same way that conventional glass fibers have revolutionized global communication. Owing to the strong transverse confinement of the light, such waveguides give rise to a coupling between the internal spin of the guided photons and their orbital angular momentum. Here, we employ this spin-orbit coupling of light to break the mirror symmetry of the scattering of light by a single gold nanoparticle on the surface of a nanophotonic waveguide. We thereby …

The integration configuration allows for out of plane optical coupling between the in-plane nanowaveguides and the vertical microtube cavities as a compact and mechanically stable optical unit, which could enable refined vertical light transf…
Acousto-optic interaction in optomechanical crystals allows unidirectional control of elastic waves over optical waves. However, as a result of this nonlinear interaction, infinitely many optical modes are born. This article presents an exact formulaion of coupled mode theory for interaction between elastic and photonic Bloch waves moving along an optomechanical waveguide. In general, an optical wavefront is strongly diffracted by an elastic wave in frequency and wavevector, and thus infinite modes with different frequencies and wavevectors appear. We discuss resonance and mode conversion cond…
We demonstrate an octave-spanning frequency comb with a spectrum covering wavelengths from 1,540 nm up to 3,200 nm. The supercontinuum is generated by pumping a 1-cm long dispersion engineered silicon wire waveguide by 70 fs pulses with an energy of merely 15 pJ. We confirm the phase coherence of the output spectrum by beating the supercontinuum with narrow bandwidth CW lasers. We show that the experimental results are in agreement with numerical simulations.

In this paper we study and design quasi-2D optomechanical crystals, waveguides, and resonant cavities formed from patterned slabs. Two-dimensional periodicity allows for in-plane pseudo-bandgaps in frequency where resonant optical and mechanical excitations localized to the slab are forbidden. By tailoring the unit cell geometry, we show that it is possible to have a slab crystal with simultaneous optical and mechanical pseudo-bandgaps, and for which optical waveguiding is not compromised. We then use these crystals to design optomechanical cavities in which strongly interacting, co-localized …
It is shown that optomechanical forces can cause nonlinear self-channelling of light in a planar dual-slab waveguide. A system of two parallel silica nanowebs, spaced ~100 nm and supported inside a fibre capillary, is studied theoretically and an iterative scheme developed to analyse its nonlinear optomechanical properties. Steady-state field distributions and mechanical deformation profiles are obtained, demonstrating that self-channelling is possible in realistic structures at launched powers as low as a few mW. The differential optical nonlinearity of the self-channelled mode can be as much…

We report on the analysis of electroabsorption in thin GaAs/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As nanophotonic waveguides with an embedded $p$-$i$-$n$ junction. By measuring the transmission through waveguides of different lengths, we derive the propagation loss as a function of electric field, wavelength, and temperature. The results are in good agreement with the Franz-Keldysh model of electroabsorption extending over 200 meV below the GaAs bandgap, i.e. in the 910--970 nm wavelength range. We find a pronounced residual absorption in forward bias, which we attribute to Fermi-level pinning at the waveguide …
Characterizing a monolayer of biological molecules has been a major challenge. We demonstrate nanophotonic wave-guide enhanced Raman spectroscopy (NWERS) of monolayers in the near-infrared region, enabling real-time measurements of the hybridization of DNA strands and the density of sub-monolayers of biotin-streptavidin complex immobilized on top of a photonics chip. NWERS is based on enhanced evanescent excitation and collection of spontaneous Raman scattering near nanophotonic waveguides, which for a one centimeter silicon nitride waveguide delivers a signal that is more than four orders of …
Establishing a highly efficient photon-emitter interface where the intrinsic linewidth broadening is limited solely by spontaneous emission is a key step in quantum optics. It opens a pathway to coherent light-matter interaction for, e.g., the generation of highly indistinguishable photons, few-photon optical nonlinearities, and photon-emitter quantum gates. However, residual broadening mechanisms are ubiquitous and need to be combated. For solid-state emitters charge and nuclear spin noise is of importance and the influence of photonic nanostructures on the broadening has not been clarified. …
Metasurfaces have achieved fruitful results in tailoring complexing light fields in free space. Periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide is a powerful platform for efficient wavelength conversion. Conventional PPLN converters however typically require long device lengths and high pump powers due to the limited nonlinear interaction strength. Here we use a nanostructured PPLN waveguides to demonstrate an ultrahigh normalized efficiency of 2600%/W-cm$^2$ for second-harmonic generation of 1.5-$μ$m radiation, more than 20 times higher than that in state-of-the-art diffused waveguides. This is achieved by a combination of sub-wavelength optical confinement and high-fidelity periodi…
Flexible control of the modal confinement in silicon photonic waveguides is an appealing feature for many applications, including sensing and hybrid integration of active materials. In most cases, strip waveguides are the preferred solution to maximize the light interaction with the waveguide surroundings. However, the only two degrees of freedom in Si strip waveguides are the width and thickness, resulting in limited flexibility in evanescent field control. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new strategy that exploits metamaterial engineering of the waveguide core and cladding to control the …
Coherent interactions between quantum emitters in tailored photonic structures is a fundamental building block for future quantum technologies, but remains challenging to observe in complex solid-state environments, where the role of decoherence must be considered. This combination enables quasi-static interactions of femtosecond pulses, reducing the pulse energy requirements by several orders of magnitude, from picojoules to femtojoules. We experimentally demonstrate two effects assoc…
Highly-tunable coherent light generation is crucial for many important photonic applications. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a dominant approach for this purpose, which, however, exhibits a trade-off between the conversion efficiency and the wavelength tunability in a conventional nonlinear platform. Recent development of the integrated lithium niobate (LN) technology makes it possible to achieve a large wavelength tuning while maintaining a high conversion efficiency. Here we report on-chip SHG that simultaneously achieves a large tunability and a high conversion efficiency inside a sing…
Laser cooling of mechanical degrees of freedom is one of the most significant achievements in the field of opto-mechanics. Here, we report, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, efficient passive optomechanical cooling of the motion of a freestanding waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonator. The waveguide is an 8 mm long glass-fiber nanospike, which has a fundamental flexural resonance at Ω/2π = 2.5 kHz and a Q-factor of 1.2 10**5. Upon launching 250 μW laser power at an optical frequency close to the WGM resonant frequency, we observed cooling of the nanospike…
We report quantitative experimental measurements of the Abraham force associated with a propagating optical wave. We isolate this force using a guided light wave undergoing an adiabatic mode transformation (AMT) along a liquid-filled hollow optical fiber (HOF). Utilizing this light intensity distribution within the liquid, we were able to generate a time-averaged non-vanishing Abraham force density, while simultaneously suppressing the Abraham-Minkowski force density. The incident laser field induced a linear axial displacement of the air-liquid interface inside the HOF, which provided a direc…
We explore the dynamics of spontaneous breakdown of mirror symmetry in a pair of identical optomechanical cavities symmetrically coupled to a waveguide. Large optical intensities enable optomechanically-induced nonlinear detuning of the optical resonators, resulting in a pitchfork bifurcation. We investigate the stability of this regime and explore the possibility of inducing multistability. By injecting proper trigger pulses, the proposed structure can toggle between two asymmetric stable states, thus serving as a low-noise nanophotonic all-optical switch or memory element.
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been extensively studied in various systems since its first proposal in quantum mechanics.
