Hybrid quantum systems are essential for the realization of distributed quantum networks. In particular, piezo-mechanics operating at typical superconducting qubit frequencies features low thermal excitations, and offers an appealing platform to bridge superconducting quantum processors and optical telecommunication channels. However, integrating superconducting and optomechanical elements at cryogenic temperatures with sufficiently strong interactions remains a tremendous challenge. Here, we report an integrated superconducting cavity piezo-optomechanical platform where 10-GHz phonons are resonantly coupled with photons in a superconducting and a nanophotonic cavities at the same time. Benefited from the achieved large piezo-mechanical cooperativity ($C_\mathrm{em}\sim7$) and the enhanced optomechanical coupling boosted by a pulsed optical pump, we demonstrate coherent interactions at cryogenic temperatures via the observation of efficient microwave-optical photon conversion. This hybrid interface makes a substantial step towards quantum communication at large scale, as well as novel explorations in microwave-optical photon entanglement and quantum sensing mediated by gigahertz phonons.
Tuning and reconfiguring nanophotonic components is needed to realize systems incorporating many components. The electrostatic force can deform a structure and tune its optical response. Despite the success of electrostatic actuators, they suffer from trade-offs between tuning voltage, tuning range, and on-chip area. Piezoelectric actuation could resolve all these challenges. Standard materials possess piezoelectric coefficients on the order of ${0.01}~\text{nm/V}$, suggesting extremely small on-chip actuation using potentials on the order of one volt. Here we propose and demonstrate compact p…
We propose a method of trapping atoms in arrays near to the surface of a composite nanophotonic device with optimal coupling to a single cavity mode. The device, comprised of a nanofiber mounted on a grating, allows the formation of periodic optical trapping potentials near to the nanofiber surface along with a high cooperativity nanofiber cavity. We model the device analytically and find good agreement with numerical simulations. We numerically demonstrate that for an experimentally realistic device, an array of traps can be formed whose centers coincide with the antinodes of a single cavity …
The ability to distribute quantum entanglement over long distances is a vital ingredient for quantum technologies. Single atoms and atom-like defects in solids are ideal quantum light sources and quantum memories to store entanglement. However, a major obstacle to developing long-range quantum networks is the mismatch between typical atomic transition energies in the ultraviolet and visible spectrum, and the low-loss propagation band of optical fibers in the infrared, around 1.5 $μ$m. A notable exception is the Er$^{3+}$ ion, whose 1.5 $μ$m transition is exploited in fiber amplifiers that driv…
Sideband-resolved coupling between multiple photonic nanocavities and propagating mechanical waves in microwave Ku-band is demonstrated. Coherent and strong photon-phonon interaction is manifested with optomechanically induced transparency and absorption, and phase-coherent interaction in multiple cavities. Inside an echo chamber it is shown that a phonon pulse can interact with an embedded nanocavity for multiple times. Our device provides a scalable platform to optomechanically couple phonons and photons for microwave photonics and quantum photonics.
We present a monolithic integrated aluminum nitride (AlN) optomechanical resonator in which the mechanical motion is actuated by piezoelectric force and the displacement is transduced by a high-Q optical cavity. The AlN optomechanical resonator is excited from a radio-frequency electrode via a small air gap to eliminate resonator-to-electrode loss. We observe the electrically excited mechanical motion at 47.3 MHz, 1.04 GHz, and 3.12 GHz, corresponding to the 1st, 2nd, and 4th radial-contour mode of the wheel resonator respectively. An equivalent circuit model is developed to describe the obser…
We present a nonlinear multimode superconducting electroacoustic system, where the interplay between superconducting kinetic inductance and piezoelectric strong coupling establishes an effective Kerr nonlinearity among multiple acoustic modes at 10 GHz that could hardly be achieved via intrinsic mechanical nonlinearity. By exciting this multimode Kerr system with a single microwave tone, we further demonstrate a coherent electroacoustic frequency comb and provide theoretical understanding of multimode nonlinear interaction in the superstrong coupling limit. This nonlinear superconducting elect…
Weakly coupled high-Q nanophotonic cavities are building blocks of slow-light waveguides and other nanophotonic devices. Their functionality critically depends on tuning as resonance frequencies should stay within the bandwidth of the device. Unavoidable disorder leads to random frequency shifts which cause localization of the light in single cavities. We present a new method to finely tune individual resonances of light in a system of coupled nanocavities. We use holographic laser-induced heating and address thermal crosstalk between nanocavities using a response matrix approach. As a main re…
We have implemented highly stable and tunable frequency references using optical high finesse cavities which incorporate a piezo actuator. As piezo material we used ceramic PZT, crystalline quartz, or PZN-PT single crystals. Lasers locked to these cavities show a relative frequency stability better than 1 x 10^{-14}, which is most likely not limited by the piezo actuators. The piezo cavities can be electrically tuned over more than one free spectral range (> 1.5 GHz) with only a minor decrease in frequency stability. Furthermore, we present a novel cavity design, where the piezo actuator is pr…
We present a cavity piezo-optomechanical system where microwave and optical degrees of freedom are coupled through an ultra-high frequency mechanical resonator. By utilizing the coherence among the three interacting modes, we demonstrate optical amplification, coherent absorption and a more general asymmetric Fano resonance. The strong piezoelectric drive further allows access to the large-amplitude-induced optomechanical nonlinearity, with which optical transparency at higher harmonics through multi-phonon scattering is demonstrated.
High frequency mechanical resonators subjected to low thermal phonon occupancy are easier to be prepared to the ground state by direct cryogenic cooling. Their extreme stiffness, however, poses a significant challenge for external interrogations. Here we demonstrate a superconducting cavity piezo-electromechanical system in which multiple modes of a bulk acoustic resonator oscillating at $10\,\textrm{GHz}$ are coupled to a planar microwave superconducting resonator with a cooperativity exceeding $2\times10^{3}$, deep in the strong coupling regime. By implementation of the non-contact coupling …

Quantum control of levitated dielectric particles is an emerging subject in quantum optomechanics. A major challenge is to efficiently measure and manipulate the particle's motion at the Heisenberg uncertainty limit. Here we present a nanophotonic interface suited to address this problem. By optically trapping a 150 nm silica particle and placing it in the near field of a photonic crystal cavity, we achieve tunable single-photon optomechanical coupling of up to $g_0/2π=9$ kHz, three orders of magnitude larger than previously reported for levitated cavity optomechanical systems. Efficient colle…
Optical trapping is an indispensable tool in physics and the life sciences. However, there is a clear trade off between the size of a particle to be trapped, its spatial confinement, and the intensities required. This is due to the decrease in optical response of smaller particles and the diffraction limit that governs the spatial variation of optical fields. It is thus highly desirable to find techniques that surpass these bounds. Recently, a number of experiments using nanophotonic cavities have observed a qualitatively different trapping mechanism described as "self-induced back-action trap…
The bandwidth and energy demands of neural networks has spurred tremendous interest in developing novel neuromorphic hardware, including photonic integrated circuits. Although an optical waveguide can accommodate hundreds of channels with THz bandwidth, the channel count of photonic systems is always bottlenecked by the devices within. In WDM-based photonic neural networks, the synapses, i.e. network interconnections, are typically realized by microring resonators (MRRs), where the WDM channel count (N) is bounded by the free-spectral range of the MRRs. For typical Si MRRs, we estimate N <= 30…
The realization of an efficient quantum optical interface for multi-qubit systems is an outstanding challenge in science and engineering. Using two atoms in individually-controlled optical tweezers coupled to a nanofabricated photonic crystal cavity, we demonstrate entanglement generation, fast non-destructive readout, and full quantum control of atomic qubits. The entangled state is verified in free space after being transported away from the cavity by encoding the qubits into long-lived states and using dynamical decoupling. Our approach bridges quantum operations at an optical link and in f…
Polymers have appealing optical, biochemical, and mechanical qualities, including broadband transparency, ease of functionalization, and biocompatibility. However, their low refractive indices have precluded wavelength-scale optical confinement and nanophotonic applications in polymers. Integrating solid-state quantum emitters with nanophotonic resonators is essential for efficient spin-photon interfacing and optical networking applications. While diamond color centers have proven to be excellent candidates for emerging quantum technologies, their integration with optical resonators remains challenging. Conventional approaches based on etching resonators into diamond often negatively impact color center performance and offer low device yield. Here, we developed an integrated photonics platform based on templated atomic layer deposition of TiO2 on diamond membranes. Our fabric…
Optical nonlinearity plays a pivotal role in quantum information processing using photons, from heralded single-photon sources, coherent wavelength conversion to long-sought quantum repeaters. Despite the availability of strong dipole coupling to quantum emitters, achieving strong bulk optical nonlinearity is highly desirable. Wavelengths in the telecommunication window (~1.25-1.65 microns) are ideal for quantum communication due to low transmission loss in fiber networks. To realize quantum networks operating at these wavelengths, long-lived quantum memories that couple to telecom-band photons with high efficiency need to be developed. We propose coupling neutral ytterbium atoms, which have a strong telecom-wavelength transition, to a silicon photonic crystal cavity. Specifically, we consider the 3P0-3D1 transition in neutral 171Yb to interface its long-lived nuclear spin in the metastable 3P0 'clock' state with a …
An efficient, scalable source of shaped single photons that can be directly integrated with optical fiber networks and quantum memories is at the heart of many protocols in quantum information science. Integrated chemical and biological sensors give advantages in cost, size and weight reduction and open new prospects for parallel monitoring and analysis. Biosensors based on nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) are the most attractive candidates for the integrated platform. However, actuation and transduction techniques (e.g. electrostatic, magnetomotive, thermal or piezoelectric) limit their operation to laboratory conditions. All-optical approach gives the possibility to overcome this problem, nevertheless, the existing schemes are either fundamentally macroscopic or excessively complicated…
Confining light in open structures is a long-sought goal in nanophotonics and cavity quantum electrodynamics. Embedded eigenstates provide infinite lifetime despite the presence of available leakage channels, but in linear time-invariant systems they cannot be excited from the outside, due to reciprocity. Here, we investigate how atomic nonlinearities may support single-photon embedded eigenstates, which can be populated by a multi-photon excitation followed by internal relaxation. We calculate the system dynamics and show that photon trapping, as well as the reverse release process, can be ac…
Advances in quantum photonics have shown that chip-scale quantum devices are translating from the realm of basic research to applied technologies. Recent developments in integrated photonic circuits and single photon detectors indicate that the bottleneck for fidelity in quantum photonic processes will ultimately lie with the photon sources. Nanophotonic entangled-photon sources are a critical building block of chip-scale quantum photonic architecture and have seen significant development over the past two decades. These sources generate photon pairs that typically span over a narrow frequency bandwidth. Generating entanglement over a wide spectral region has proven to be useful in a wide variety of applications including quantum metrology, spectroscopy and sensing, and optical communication. However, generation of broadband photon pairs with temporal coherence approaching an optical cycle on a chip is yet to be seen. Here we demo…
Optical microresonators have proven powerful in a wide range of applications, including cavity quantum electrodynamics, biosensing, microfludics, and cavity optomechanics. Their performance depends critically on the exact distribution of optical energy, confined and shaped by the nanoscale device geometry. Near-field optical probes can image this distribution, but the physical probe necessarily perturbs the near field, which is particularly problematic for sensitive high quality factor resonances. We present a new approach to mapping nanophotonic modes that uses a controllably small and local …
Single self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots are promising bright sources of indistinguishable photons for quantum information science. However, their distribution in emission wavelength, due to inhomogeneous broadening inherent to their growth, has limited the ability to create multiple identical sources. Quantum frequency conversion can overcome this issue, particularly if implemented using scalable chip-integrated technologies. Here, we report the first demonstration of quantum frequency conversion of a quantum dot single-photon source on a silicon nanophotonic chip. Single photons from a q…

By employing polarization-resolved Fourier plane optical microscopy, we quantify the directional emi…
Piezoelectric optomechanical platforms represent one of the most promising routes towards achieving quantum transduction of photons between the microwave and optical frequency domains. However, there are significant challenges to achieving near-unity transduction efficiency. We discuss such factors in the context of the two main approaches being pursued for high efficiency transduction. The first approach uses one-dimensional nanobeam optomechanical crystals excited by interdigitated transducers, and is characterized by large single-photon optomechanical coupling strength, limited intracavity …
Integration of solid state quantum emitters into nanophotonic circuits is a critical step towards fully on-chip quantum photonic based technologies. Among potential materials platforms, quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride have emerged over the last years as viable candidate. While the fundamental physical properties have been intensively studied over the last years, only few works have focused on the emitter integration into photonic resonators. Yet, for a potential quantum photonic material platform, the integration with nanophotonic cavities is an important cornerstone, as it enables…
Many proposals for solid-state photonic implementations of quantum information processing utilize high-quality optical resonators to achieve strong coupling between guided fields and heterogeneously incorporated qubits. Given the practical difficulty of accurately placing quantum dots, vacancy centers, or other such atom-like emitters throughout a complex nanophotonic circuit, it would be natural to consider whether high-quality resonators could be used in conjunction with bulk optical nonlinearities to create optically-coupled qubit degrees of freedom via lithographic patterning of a homogene…

The coupling of mechanical oscillators with light has seen a recent surge of interest, as recent reviews report.[1, 2] This coupling is enhanced when confining light in an optical cavity where the mechanical oscillator is integrated as back- mirror or movable wall. At the nano-scale, the optomechanical coupling increases further thanks to a smaller optomechanical interaction volume and reduced mass of the mechanical oscillator. In view of realizing such cavity nano- optomechanics experiments, a scheme was proposed where a sub-wavelength sized nanomechanical oscillator is coupled to a high fine…
We experimentally realized an optical nanofiber-based cavity by combining a 1-D photonic crystal and Bragg grating structures. We have also experimentally measured the transmission spectra and a Q-factor of ~784(87) for a very short periodic structure has been observed. The structure provides strong confinement of the cavity field and its potential for optical network inte…
We demonstrate reversible strain-tuning of a quantum dot strongly coupled to a photonic crystal cavity. We observe an average redshift of 0.45 nm for quantum dots located inside the cavity membrane, achieved with an electric field of 15 kV/cm applied to a piezo-electric actuator. Using this technique, we demonstrate the ability to tune a quantum dot into resonance with a photonic crystal cavity in the strong coupling regime, resulting in a clear anti-crossing. The bare cavity resonance is less sensitive to strain than the quantum dot and shifts by only 0.078 nm at the maximum applied electric …
We report the realization of a device based on a single Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond coupled to a fiber-cavity for use as single photon source (SPS). The device consists of two concave mirrors each directly fabricated on the facets of two optical fibers and a preselected nanodiamond containing a single NV center deposited onto one of these mirrors. Both, cavity in- and output are directly fiber-coupled and the emission wavelength is easily tunable by variation of the separation of the two mirrors with a piezo-electric crystal. By coupling to the cavity we achieve an increase of the …
Color centers in diamond provide a promising platform for quantum optics in the solid state, with coherent optical transitions and long-lived electron and nuclear spins. Building upon recent demonstrations of nanophotonic waveguides and optical cavities in single-crystal diamond, we now demonstrate on-chip diamond nanophotonics with a high efficiency fiber-optical interface, achieving > 90% power coupling at visible wavelengths. We use this approach to demonstrate a bright source of narrowband single photons, based on a silicon-vacancy color center embedded within a waveguide-coupled diamond p…
We demonstrate cavity-enhanced Raman emission from a single atomic defect in a solid. Our platform is a single silicon-vacancy center in diamond coupled with a monolithic diamond photonic crystal cavity. The cavity enables an unprecedented frequency tuning range of the Raman emission (100 GHz) that significantly exceeds the spectral inhomogeneity of silicon-vacancy centers in diamond nanostructures. We also show that the cavity selectively suppresses the phonon-induced spontaneous emission that degrades the efficiency of Raman photon generation. Our results pave the way towards photon-mediated…
An optical resonator with intracavity Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit dispersive bistability suitable for all-optical switching. With nanophotonic elements it may be possible to achieve attojoule switching energies, which would be very attractive for ultra-low power operation but potentially problematic because of quantum fluctuation-induced spontaneous switching. In this manuscript I derive a quantum-optical model of two Kerr-nonlinear ring resonators connected in a coherent feedback loop, and show via numerical simulation that a properly designed `controller' cavity can significantly reduce th…
We present a complete fabrication study of an efficiently-coupled microring optical circuit tailored for cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) with trapped atoms. The microring structures are fabricated on a transparent membrane with high in-vacuum fiber edge-coupling efficiency in a broad frequency band. In addition, a bus waveguide pulley coupler realizes critical coupling to the microrings at both of the cesium D-line frequencies, while high coupling efficiency is achieved at the cesium 'magic' wavelengths for creating a lattice of two-color evanescent field traps above a microring. The pres…
