Unprecedented material compatibility and ease of integration, in addition to the unique and diverse optoelectronic properties of layered materials have generated significant interest in their utilization in nanophotonic devices. While initial nanophotonic experiments primarily focused on light-sources, modulators, and detectors, recently researchers have demonstrated nonlinear optical devices using layered materials. In this paper, we review the current state of cavity-enhanced nonlinear optics with layered materials. Along with conventional nonlinear optics related to harmonic generation, we report on emerging directions of nonlinear optics, where the layered materials can potentially play a significant role.
We study the resonant modes in double-layered transformation cavities consisting of inner and outer layer boundaries where the mode intensity is mainly located inside the inner layer. This is an intermediate design between a transformation cavity and a cavity in a wholly transformed space of transformation optics. We demonstrate the crossover between these two extreme cases as the outer layer of the cavity varies and also explore the properties of the resonant modes in the cavity. While the near-field patterns of the resonant modes do not change as the outer layer becomes larger, the Q-factors…
We present a theoretical framework for nonlinear optics of graphene and other 2D materials in layered structures. We derive a key equation to find the effective electric field and the sheet current density in the 2D material for given incident light beams. Our approach takes into account the effect of the surrounding environment and characterizes its contribution as a structure factor. We apply our approach to two experimental setups, and discuss the structure factors for several nonlinear optical processes including second harmonic generation, third harmonic generation, and parametric frequen…
A novel method for the calculation of eigenfrequencies of non-uniformly filled spherical cavity resonators is developed. The impact of the system symmetry on the electromagnetic field distribution as well as on its degrees of freedom (the set of resonant modes) is examined. It is shown that in the case of angularly symmetric cavity, regardless of its radial non-uniformity, the set of resonator modes is, as anticipated, a superposition of TE and TM oscillations which can be described in terms of a single scalar function independently of each other. The spectrum is basically determined through t…
Cavity optomagnonics has emerged as a promising platform for studying coherent photon-spin interactions as well as tunable microwave-to-optical conversion. However, current implementation of cavity optomagnonics in ferrimagnetic crystals remains orders of magnitude larger in volume than state-of-the-art cavity optomechanical devices, resulting in very limited magneto-optical interaction strength. Here, we demonstrate a cavity optomagnonic device based on integrated waveguides and its application for microwave-to-optical conversion. By designing a ferrimagnetic rib waveguide to support multiple…
The way molecules absorb, transfer, and emit light can be modified by coupling them to optical cavities. The extent of the modification is often defined by the cavity-molecule coupling strength, which depends on the number of coupled molecules. We experimentally and numerically study the evolution of photoemission from a thin layered J-aggregated molecular material strongly coupled to a Fabry-Perot microcavity as a function of the number of coupled layers. We unveil an important difference between the strong coupling signatures obtained from reflection spectroscopy and from polariton assisted …
Spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride, and specifically the negatively charged boron vacancy (VB) centres, are emerging candidates for quantum sensing. However, the VB defects suffer from low quantum efficiency and as a result exhibit weak photoluminescence. In this work, we demonstrate a scalable approach to dramatically enhance the VB- emission by coupling to a plasmonic gap cavity. The plasmonic cavity is composed of a flat gold surface and a silver cube, with few-layer hBN flakes positioned in between. Employing these plasmonic cavities, we extracted two orders of magnitude in photolumin…
We present a rigorous procedure for evaluating the photoelastic coefficients of a layered medium where the periodicity is smaller than the wavelengths of all optical and acoustic fields. Analytical expressions are given for the coefficients of a composite material comprising thin layers of optically isotropic materials. These coefficients include artificial contributions that are unique to structured media and arise from the optical and mechanical contrast between the constituents. Using numerical examples, we demonstrate that the acousto-optic properties of layered structures can be enhanced …
Light-matter coupling in excitonic materials has been the subject of intense investigation due to emergence of new excitonic materials. Two-dimensional layered hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites (2D HOIPs) support strongly bound excitons at room-temperatures with some of the highest oscillator strengths and electric loss tangents among the known excitonic materials. Here, we report strong light-matter coupling in Ruddlesden-Popper phase 2D-HOIPs crystals without the necessity of an external cavity. We report concurrent occurrence of multiple-orders of hybrid light-matter states via both refl…
We propose a general topology optimization framework for metasurface inverse design that can automatically discover highly complex multi-layered meta-structures with increased functionalities. In particular, we present topology-optimized multi-layered geometries exhibiting angular phase control, including a single-piece nanophotonic metalens with angular aberration correction as well as an angle-convergent metalens that focuses light onto the same focal spot regardless of the angle of incidence.
The ease of integration coupled with large second-order nonlinear coefficient of atomically thin layered 2D materials presents a unique opportunity to realize second-order nonlinearity in silicon compatible integrated photonic system. However, the phase matching requirement for second-order nonlinear optical processes makes the nanophotonic design difficult. We show that by nano-patterning the 2D material, quasi-phase matching can be achieved. Such patterning based phase-matching could potentially compensate for inevitable fabrication errors and significantly simplify the design process of the…

In recent years, layered materials and related heterostructures have attracted huge attention in this field, due to their huge nonlinear optical susceptibilities, their ease of integration on photonic platforms, and their 2D nature which relaxes the phase-matching constraints and thus offers a practically un…

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus, have attracted much interest from the viewpoints of fundamental physics and device applications. The establishment of new functionalities in anisotropic layered 2D materials is a challenging but rewarding frontier, owing to their remarkable optical properties and prospects for new devices. Here, we report the anisotropic optical properties of layered 2D monochalcogenide of germanium sulfide (GeS). Three Raman scattering peaks corresponding to the B3g, A1g, and A2g modes with strong polarization depen…
We propose a new type of bistable device for silicon photonics, using the self-electro-optic effect within an optical cavity. Since the bistability does not depend on the intrinsic optical nonlinearity of the material, but is instead engineered by means of an optoelectronic feedback, it appears at low optical powers. This bistable device satisfies all the basic criteria required in an optical switch to build a scalable digital optical computing system.
We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of nonlinear thermo-optic effects in suspended chalcogenide glass nanobeam cavities. We measure the power dependent resonance peaks and characterise the dynamic nonlinear thermo-optic response of the cavity under modulated light input. Several distinct nonlinear characteristics are identified, including a modified spectral response containing periodic fringes, a critical wavelength jump and saturated time delay for modulation frequency faster than the thermal characteristic time. We reveal that the coupling to a parasitic Fabry-Perot cavity en…
We have developed a technique to measure the absolute frequencies of optical transitions by using an evacuated Rb-stabilized ring-cavity resonator as a transfer cavity. We study possible wavelength-dependent errors due to dispersion at the cavity mirrors by measuring the frequency of the same transition in the $D_2$ line of Cs at three cavity lengths. We find no discernable change in values within our error of 30 kHz. Our values are consistent with measurements using the frequency-comb technique and have similar accuracy.
Optical cavities are a cornerstone of photonics. They are indispensable in lasers, optical filters, optical combs and clocks, in quantum physics, and have enabled the detection of gravitational waves. Cavities transmit light only at discrete resonant frequencies, which are well-separated in micro-structures. Despite attempts at the construction of `white-light cavities', the benefits accrued upon optically interacting with a cavity -- such as resonant field buildup -- have remained confined to narrow linewidths. Here, we demonstrate achromatic optical transmission through a planar Fabry-Perot …
Image-amplifying optical cavities offer an intriguing platform for nonlinear optical processing of two-dimensional signals, with potential applications in optical information processing and optically implemented artificial neural networks. Here, we analyze the performance of a self-imaging degenerate cavity via numerical simulations and show the existence of a cavity size-dependent minimum spread in the transverse mode resonances. This non-degeneracy, in turn, leads to an inherent trade-off between the amplification and the fidelity of the intracavity image as the cavity finesse changes. Our r…
We experimentally characterize Hopf bifurcation phenomena at femtojoule energy scales in a multi-atom cavity quantum electrodynamical (cavity QED) system, and demonstrate how such behaviors can be exploited in the design of all-optical memory and modulation devices. The data are analyzed using a semiclassical model that explicitly treats heterogeneous coupling of atoms to the cavity mode. Our results highlight the interest of cavity QED systems for ultra-low power photonic signal processing as well as for fundamental studies of mesoscopic nonlinear dynamics.
Optical nonreciprocity is important in photonic information processing to route the optical signal or prevent the reverse flow of noise. By adopting the strong nonlinearity associated with a few atoms in a strongly coupled cavity QED system and an asymmetric cavity configuration, we experimentally demonstrate the nonreciprocal transmission between two counterpropagating light fields with extremely low power. This nonreciprocity can even occur on a few-photon level due to the high optical nonlinearity of the system. The working power can be flexibly tuned by changing the effective number of ato…
A unidirectional optical oscillator is built by using a liquid crystal light-valve that couples a pump beam with the modes of a nearly spherical cavity. For sufficiently high pump intensity, the cavity field presents a complex spatio-temporal dynamics, accompanied by the emission of extreme waves and large deviations from the Gaussian statistics. We identify a mechanism of spatial symmetry breaking, due to a hypercycle-type amplification through the nonlocal coupling of the cavity field.
The repetition rate stabilization of an optical frequency comb based on diode-pumped solid-state laser technology is demonstrated using an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator. The large feedback bandwidth of such modulators allows disciplining the comb repetition rate on a cavity-stabilized continuous-wave laser with a locking bandwidth up to 700 kHz. This surpasses what can be achieved with any other type of actuator reported so far. An in-loop integrated phase noise of 133 mrad has been measured and the PM-to-AM coupling of the electro-optic modulator has been investigated as well.
A multi-layered structure consisting of alternate right-handed material (RHM) and left-handed material (LHM)is considered and the unusual narrow transmission bands are explained as the competitive results of the Bragg condition and the transparent condition. These unusual narrow transmission bands may exist regardless whether the optical length of the LHM layer cancels the optical length of the RHM layer or not. This unusual transmission property may disappear when the reflection coefficient for each interface is small and the optical length of the LHM layer does not cancel the optical length …
Nonlinear optical property of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanosheet dispersions, including MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, was performed by using Z-scan technique with ns pulsed laser at 1064 nm and 532 nm. The results demonstrate that the TMDC dispersions exhibit significant optical limiting response at 1064 nm due to nonlinear scattering, in contrast to the combined effect of both saturable absorption and nonlinear scattering at 532 nm. Selenium compounds show better optical limiting performance than that of the sulfides in the near infrared. A liquid dispersion system based theoretic…
Intrinsic to the process of high-order harmonic generation is the creation of plasma and the resulting spatiotemporal distortions of the driving laser pulse. Inside a high finesse cavity where the driver pulse and gas medium are reused, this can lead to optical bistability of the cavity-plasma system, accumulated self-phase modulation of the intracavity pulse, and coupling to higher order cavity modes. We present an experimental and theoretical study of these effects and discuss their implications for power scaling of intracavity high-order harmonic generation and extreme ultraviolet frequency…
By applying a high-reflectivity dielectric coating on both sides of a commercial plano-convex lens, we produce a stable monolithic Fabry-Perot cavity suitable for use as a narrow band filter in quantum optics experiments. The resonant frequency is selected by means of thermal expansion. Owing to the long term mechanical stability, no optical locking techniques are required. We characterize the cavity performance as an optical filter, obtaining a 45 dB suppression of unwanted modes while maintaining a transmission of 60%.
In the previous paper [M. Tsang, Phys. Rev. A 81, 063837 (2010), e-print arXiv:1003.0116], I proposed a quantum model of a cavity electro-optic modulator, which can coherently couple an optical cavity mode to a microwave resonator mode and enable novel quantum operations on the two modes, including laser cooling of the microwave mode, electro-optic entanglement, and backaction-evading optical measurement of a microwave quadrature. In this sequel, I focus on the quantum input-output relations between traveling optical and microwave fields coupled to a cavity electro-optic modulator. With red-si…
