Using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations, we investigate the insulator-metal transition observed in liquid hydrogen at high pressure. Below the critical temperature of the transition from the molecular to the atomic liquid, the fundamental electronic gap closure occurs abruptly, with a small discontinuity reflecting the weak first-order transition in the thermodynamic equation of state. Above the critical temperature, molecular dissociation sets in while the gap is still open. When the gap closes, the decay of the off-diagonal reduced density matrix shows that the liquid enters a gapless, but localized phase: there is a cross-over between the insulating and the metallic liquids. Compared to different DFT functionals, our QMC calculations provide larger values for the fundamental gap and the electronic density of states close to the band edges, indicating that optical properties from DFT potentially benefit from error cancellations.
We study the gap closure with pressure of crystalline molecular hydrogen. The gaps are obtained from grand-canonical Quantum Monte Carlo methods properly extended to quantum and thermal crystals, simulated by Coupled Electron Ion Monte Carlo. Nuclear zero point effects cause a large reduction in the gap ($\sim 2eV$). \CP{Depending on the structure,} the fundamental indirect gap closes \CP{between 380GPa and} 530GPa for ideal crystals and 330-380GPa for quantum crystals. Beyond this pressure the system enters into a bad metal phase where the density of states at the Fermi level increases with p…
We report modulation of a reversible phase transition in VO2 films by hydrogen doping. A metallic phase and a new insulating phase are successively observed at room temperature as the doping concentration increases. It is suggested that the polarized charges from doped hydrogens play an important role. These charges gradually occupy V3d-O2p hybridized orbitals and consequently modulate the filling of the VO2 crystal conduction band-edge states, which eventually evolve into new valence band-edge states. This demonstrates the exceptional sensitivity of VO2 electronic properties to electron conce…
We have studied dense hydrogen and deuterium experimentally up to 320 GPa and using ab initio molecular dynamic (MD) simulations up to 370 GPa between 250 and 300 K. Raman and optical absorption spectra show significant anharmonic and quantum effects in mixed atomic and molecular dense phase IV of hydrogen. In agreement with these observations, ab initio MD simulations near 300 K show extremely large atomic motions, which include molecular rotations, hopping and even pair fluctuations suggesting that phase IV may not have a well-defined crystalline structure. The structurally diverse layers (m…
Compressed hydrogen passes through a series of layered structures in which the layers can be viewed as distorted graphene sheets. The electronic structures of these layered structures can be understood by studying simple model systems- an ideal single hydrogen graphene sheet and three-dimensional model lattices consisting of such sheets. The energetically stable structures result from structural distortions of model graphene-based systems due to electronic instabilities towards Peierls or other distortions associated with the opening of a band gap. Two factors play crucial roles in the metalli…
The insulator-to-metal transition in dense fluid hydrogen is an essential phenomenon to understand gas giant planetary interiors and the physical and chemical behavior of highly compressed condensed matter. Using fast laser spectroscopy techniques to probe hydrogen and deuterium precompressed in a diamond anvil cell and laser heated on microsecond timescales, we observe an onset of metal-like reflectivity in the visible spectral range at P>150 GPa and T>3000 K. The reflectance increases rapidly with decreasing photon energy indicating free-electron metallic behavior with a plasma edge in the v…
Transition of molecular hydrogen to atomic ionized state with increase of temperature and pressure poses still unresolved problems for experimental methods and theory. Here we analyze the dynamics of this transition and show its nonequilibrium non-adiabatic character overlooked in both interpreting experimental data and in theoretical models. The non-adiabatic mechanism explains the strong isotopic effect [Zaghoo, Husband, and Silvera, Phys. Rev. B 98, 104102 (2018)] and the large latent heat [Houtput, Tempere, and Silvera, Phys. Rev. B 100, 134106 (2019)] reported recently. We demonstrate the…
While graphene is a semi-metal, recently synthesized hydrogenated graphene called graphane, turns out to be an insulator. We have probed the metal insulator Transition in graphene-graphane system within the framework of density functional theory. By analysing the evolutionary trends in the electronic structure for fifteen different hydrogen concentrations on graphene, we unravel some novel features of this transition. As hydrogen coverage increases the semi-metal turns first into a metal, then transforms into an insulator. The metallic phase is spatially inhomogeneous in the sense, it contains…
Using conceptually and procedurally consistent density functional theory (DFT) calculations with an advanced meta-GGA exchange-correlation functional in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we determine the insulator-metal transition (IMT) of warm dense fluid hydrogen over the pressure range 50 to 300 GPa. Inclusion of nuclear quantum effects via path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) sharpens the metallic transition and lowers the transition temperature relative to results from Born-Oppenheimer (BO) MD. BOMD itself gives improved agreement with experimental results compared to previous …

Electronic structure calculations for compressed molecular hydrogen are performed to provide more insight into the diversity of phenomena recently observed experimentally. We perform full-potential LAPW calculations and analyze them in terms of a molecular tight-binding model. We show that $σ_g$ and $σ_u$ bands overlap occurs at rather low pressure, while an insulating state persists at specific orientations up to 200 GPa, in accord with previous work, and is due to opening of hybridization gaps at the Fermi level. We also present calculations of electronic properties such as plasma frequencie…
This work reports a systematic study of the evolution of charge transport mechanism in granular ultra-thin films of palladium of thickness varying between 6nm and 2nm. While the films with thickness > 4nm exhibit metallic behaviour, that at 3nm thickness undergoes a metal-insulator transition at 19.5K. In contrast, the 2nm thick film remained insulating at all temperatures. with transport following Mott's variable range hopping. At room temperature, while the thicker film exhibit resistance decrease on H$_2$ exposure. the insulating film showed an anomalous initial resistance increase before s…
Optical nanosensors are promising for hydrogen sensing because they are small, free from spark generation, and feasible for remote optical readout. Conventional optical nanosensors require broadband excitation and spectrometers, rendering the devices bulky and complex. An alternative is spatial intensity-based optical sensing, which only requires an imaging system and a smartly designed platform to report the spatial distribution of analytical optical signals. Here, we present a spatial intensity-based hydrogen sensing platform based on Fano-like spatial distribution of the transmission in a P…

Hydrogen exhibits qualitatively different charge states depending on the host material, as nicely explained by the state-of-the-art impurity-state calculation. Motivated by a recent experiment [Nature 546, 124 (2017)], we show that the complex oxide SrCoO$_{2.5}$ represents an interesting example, in which the interstitial H appears as a deep-level center according to the commonly-used transition level calculation, but no bound electron can be found around the impurity. Via a combination of charge difference analysis, density of states projection and constraint magnetization calculation, it tu…
Through CaH2 chemical reduction of a parent R3+Ni3+O3 perovskite form, superconductivity was recently achieved in Sr-doped NdNiO2 on SrTiO3 substrate. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we find that stoichiometric NdNiO2 is significantly unstable with respect to decomposition into 1/2[Nd2O3 + NiO + Ni] with exothermic decomposition energy of +176 meV/atom, a considerably higher instability than that for common ternary oxides. This poses the question if the stoichiometric NdNiO2 nickelate compound used extensively to model the electronic band structure of Ni-based oxide analog …
Recently, higher-order topological insulators have been attracting extensive interest. Unlike the conventional topological insulators that demand bulk gap closings at transition points, the higher-order band topology can be changed without bulk closure and exhibits as an obstruction of higher-dimensional boundary states. Here, we report the first experimental realization of three-dimensional surface-obstructed topological insulators with using acoustic crystals. Our acoustic measurements demonstrate unambiguously the emergence of one-dimensional topological hinge states in the middle of the bu…
Recently, topological quantum materials have emerged as a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, most of their performance largely lags behind noble metals such as benchmark platinum (Pt). In this work, a Pd(20nm)/SnTe(70nm) heterostructure, fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy and electron beam evaporation, is found to display much higher electrocatalytic activity than that of a pure Pd(20nm) thin film and even higher than that of a commercial Pt foil. This heterostructure adopts an extracted turnover frequency value more than two times higher than that of t…
While graphene is a semi-metal, a recently synthesized hydrogenated graphene called graphane, is an insulator. We have probed the transformation of graphene upon hydrogenation to graphane within the framework of density functional theory. By analyzing the electronic structure for eighteen different hydrogen concentrations, we bring out some novel features of this transition. Our results show that the hydrogenation favors clustered configurations leading to the formation of compact islands. The analysis of the charge density and electron localization function (ELF) indicates that as hydrogen co…
Hydrogen, the smallest and most abundant element in nature, can be efficiently incorporated within a solid and drastically modify its electronic state - it has been known to induce novel magnetoelectric effects in complex perovskites and modulate insulator-to-metal transition in a correlated Mott oxide. Here we demonstrate that hydrogenation resolves an outstanding challenge in chalcogenide classes of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators and magnets - the control of intrinsic bulk conduction that denies access to quantum surface transport. With electrons donated by a reversible bindin…
We study the structural and electronic properties of phase III of solid hydrogen using accurate many-electron theories and compare to state-of-the-art experimental findings. The atomic structures of phase III modelled by C2/c-24 crystals are fully optimized on the level of second-order perturbation theory, demonstrating that previously employed structures optimized on the level of approximate density functionals exhibit errors in the H$_2$ bond lengths that cause significant discrepancies in the computed quasi particle band gaps and vibrational frequencies compared to experiment. Using the new…
In traditional semiconductors with large effective Bohr radius, an electron donor creates a hydrogen-like bound state just below the conduction band edge. The properties of the impurity band arising from such hydrogenic impurities have been studied extensively during the last 70 years. In this paper we consider whether a similar bound state and a similar impurity band can exist in mixed-valence insulators, where the gap arises at low temperature due to strong electron-electron interactions. We find that the structure of the hybridized conduction band leads to an unusual bound state that can be…
Topological phases of matter are generally characterized by topological properties of energy bands of a system. Their transitions under preserved symmetries occur through closing a gap of energy bands, leading to topologically protected edge states in energy spectra in topological phases. Here we predict a new topological phase that emerges through closing a gap of bands constructed by energy bands, instead of through closing an energy gap with preserved symmetries. From this perspective, topological phases may arise from topological properties of the "bands of bands" associated with their gap…
We report Raman scattering and visible to near-infrared absorption spectra of solid hydrogen under static pressure up to 285 GPa at 85-140 K. We obtain pressure dependences of vibron and phonon modes in agreement with previously determined to lower pressures. The results indicate the stability of the ordered molecular phase III to the highest pressure reached and provide constraints on the insulator-to-metal transition pressure.
Hydrogen has been the essential element in the development of atomic and molecular physics1). Moving to the properties of dense hydrogen has appeared a good deal more complex than originally thought by Wigner and Hungtinton in their seminal paper predicting metal hydrogen2): the electrons and the protons are strongly coupled to each other and ultimately must be treated equally3)4). The determination of how and when molecular solid hydrogen will transform into a metal is the stepping stone towards a full understanding of the quantum-many body properties of dense hydrogen. The quest for metal hy…
We analyze in detail the electronic properties of high pressure hydrogen around the liquid-liquid phase transition based on Coupled Electron-Ion Monte Carlo calculations. Computing the off-diagonal single particle density matrix and the momentum distribution we discuss localization properties of the electrons. The abrupt changes of these distributions indicate a metal to insulator transition occurring together with the structural transition from the atomic to molecular fluid. We further discuss the electron-proton and electron-electron pair correlation functions, which also change abruptly at …
Electric field induced nucleation is introduced as a possible mechanism to realize a metallic phase of hydrogen. Analytical expressions are derived for the nucleation probabilities of both thermal and quantum nucleation in terms of material parameters, temperature, and the applied field. Our results show that the insulator-metal transition can be driven by an electric field within a reasonable temperature range and at much lower pressures than the current paradigm of P > 400 GPa. Both static and oscillating fields are considered and practical implementations are discussed.
The insulator to metal transition in solid hydrogen was predicted over 70 years ago but the demonstration of this transition remains a scientific challenge. In this regard, a peak in the temperature vs. pressure melting line of hydrogen may be a possible precursor for metallization. However, previous measurements of the fusion curve of hydrogen have been limited in pressure by diffusion of hydrogen into the gasket or diamonds. To overcome this limitation we have used an innovative technique of pulsed laser heating of the sample and final peak in the melting line at P=64.7+-4GPa and T=1055+-20 …
The insulator-metal transition in hydrogen is one of the most outstanding problems in condensed matter physics. The high-pressure metallic phase is now predicted to be liquid atomic from T=0 K to very high temperatures. We have conducted measurements of optical properties of hot dense hydrogen in the region of 1.1-1.7 Mbar and up to 2200 K. We observe a first-order phase transition accompanied by changes in transmittance and reflectance characteristic of a metal. The phase line of this transition has a negative slope in agreement with theories of the so-called plasma phase transition.
We show that strong enough electric fields can trigger nucleation of needle-shaped metallic embryos in insulators, even when the metal phase is energetically unfavorable without the field. This general phenomenon is due to the gigantic induced dipole moments acquired by the embryos which cause sufficient electrostatic energy gain. Nucleation kinetics are exponentially accelerated by the field-induced suppression of nucleation barriers. Our theory opens the venue of field driven material synthesis. In particular, we briefly discuss synthesis of metallic hydrogen at standard pressure.
Recently it has been discovered that lanthanum, yttrium, and other metal hydride films show dramatic changes in the optical properties at the metal-insulator transition. Such changes on a high energy scale suggest the electronic structure is best described by a local model based on negatively charged hydrogen (H$^-$) ions. We develop a many-body theory for the strong correlation in a H$^-$ ion lattice. The metal hydride is described by a large $U$-limit of an Anderson lattice model. We use lanthanum hydride as a prototype of these compounds, and find LaH$_3$ is an insulator with a substantial …
Here we show, with simultaneous transport and photoemission measurements, that the graphene terminated SiC(0001) surface undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) upon dosingwith small amounts of atomic hydrogen. We find the room temperature resistance increases by about 4 orders of magnitude, a transition accompanied by anomalies in the momentum-resolved spectral function including a non-Fermi Liquid behaviour and a breakdown of the quasiparticle picture. These effects are discussed in terms of a possible transition to a strongly (Anderson) localized ground state.
The ab-initio phase diagram of dense hydrogen is very sensitive to errors in the treatment of electronic correlation. Recently, it has been shown that the choice of the density functional has a large effect on the predicted location of both the liquid-liquid phase transition and the solid insulator-to-metal transition in dense hydrogen. To identify the most accurate functional for dense hydrogen applications, we systematically benchmark some of the most commonly used functionals using Quantum Monte Carlo. By considering several measures of functional accuracy, we conclude that the van der Waal…
The protonic conductivity in the hydrogen bonded chains is investigated theoretically in the framework of the two-stage transport model. The strong interactions with optical phonon stretching mode are considered. We obtain the transition from the insulator to the metal-type state from the temperature dependencies of the hopping conductivity and analyze the influence of the specific Grotthuss mechanism on the transition character. We investigate also the main peculiarities in the frequency dependencies of the band and hopping conductivity parts which appear due to above-mentioned two-stage proc…
Being the simplest element with just one electron and proton the electronic structure of the Hydrogen atom is known exactly. However, this does not hold for the complex interplay between them in a solid and in particular not at high pressure that is known to alter the crystal as well as the electronic structure. Back in 1935 Wigner and Huntington predicted that at very high pressure solid molecular hydrogen would dissociate and form an atomic solid that is metallic. In spite of intense research efforts the experimental realization, as well as the theoretical determination of the crystal struct…
We present an accurate study of the static-nucleus electronic energy band gap of solid molecular hydrogen at high pressure. The excitonic and quasiparticle gaps of the $C2/c$, $Pc$, $Pbcn$, and $P6_3/m$ structures at pressures of 250, 300, and 350~GPa are calculated using the fixed-node diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method. The difference between the mean-field and many-body band gaps at the same density is found to be almost independent of system size and can therefore be applied as a scissor correction to the mean-field gap of an infinite system to obtain an estimate of the many-body g…
Quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect is quite promising for applications in spintronics and quantum computations, but presently can only be achieved at ultralow temperature. Searching for large-gap QSH insulators is the key to increase the operating temperature. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the stable hydrogenated stanene with a dumbbell-like structure (DB stanane) has large topological nontrivial band gaps of 312 meV (gamma point) and 160 meV for bulk characterized by a topological invariant of Z2=1, due to the s-pxy band inversion. Helical gapless edge states appear in …
Hydrogen at high temperature and pressure undergoes a phase transition from a liquid molecular phase to a conductive atomic state, or liquid metallic hydrogen, sometimes referred to as the plasma phase transition (PPT). The PPT phase line was observed in a recent experiment studying laser-pulse heated hydrogen in a diamond anvil cell in the pressure range $\sim 100 - 170 \text{GPa}$ for temperatures up to $\sim 2000 \text{K}$. The experimental signatures of the transition are (i) a negative pressure-temperature slope, (ii) a plateau in the heating curve, assumed to be related to the latent hea…
Based on first-principles calculations, the ground state configuration (Cmma-CH) of hydrogenated Biphenylene sheet (Science, 372, 852, 2021) is carefully identified from hundreds of possible candidates generated by RG2 code (Phys. Rev. B., 97, 014104, 2018). Cmma-CH contains four benzene molecules in its crystalline cell and all of them are inequivalent due to its Cmma symmetry. The hydrogen atoms in Cmma-CH bond to carbon atoms in each benzene with a boat-like (boat-1:DDUDDU) up/down sequence and reversed boat-1 (UUDUUD) sequence in adjacent benzene rings. It is energetically less stable than…
The effects of edge hydrogenation and hydroxylation on the relative stability and electronic properties of hexagonal boron nitride quantum dots (h-BNQDs) are investigated. Zigzag edge hydroxylation is found to result in considerable energetic stabilization of h-BNQDs as well as a reduction of their electronic gap with respect to their hydrogenated counterparts. The application of an external in-plane electric field leads to a monotonous decrease of the gap. When compared to their edge-hydrogenated counterparts, significantly lower field intensities are required to achieve full gap closure of t…

We use density functional molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) to study the effect of finite temperature exchange-correlation (xc) in Hydrogen. Using the Kohn-Sham approach, the xc energy of the system, $E_{xc}(r_{s})$ is replaced by the xc free energy $f_{xc}(r_{s},Θ)$ within the local density approximation (LDA) based on parametrized path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) data for the uniform electron gas (UEG) at warm dense matter (WDM) conditions. We observe insignificant changes in the equation of state (EOS) at the region of metal-insulator transition compared to the regular LDA form, whereas significa…
First principles calculations based on density functional theory reveal some unusual properties of BN sheet functionalized with hydrogen and fluorine. These properties differ from those of similarly functionalized graphene even though both share the same honeycomb structure. (1) Unlike graphene which undergoes a metal to insulator transition when fully hydrogenated, the band gap of the BN sheet significantly narrows when fully saturated with hydrogen. Furthermore, the band gap of the BN sheet can be tuned from 4.7 eV to 0.6 eV and the system can be a direct or an indirect semiconductor or even…

The metallic regime of the hydrogen plasma is studied by ab initio Molecular Dynamics simulations, for classical protons and fully degenerate electrons, in the strong coupling regime of the protons. The breakdown of linear screening observed for decreasing density gives rise to a surprisingly rich low-temperature phase diagram, showing in particular a dramatic drop of the melting temperature of the proton crystal. Extensive dynamical simulations reveal the remarkable persistence of a weakly damped high-frequency ion acoustic mode (plasmon-like), even under conditions of strong electron screeni…
We report measurements of the diffusion of atomic hydrogen in single crystalline VO2 micro/nanobeams by direct exposure to atomic hydrogen, without catalyst. The atomic hydrogen is generated by a hot filament, and the doping process takes place at moderate temperature (373 K). Undoped VO2 has a metal-to-insulator phase transition at ~340 K between a high-temperature, rutile, metallic phase and a low-temperature, monoclinic, insulating phase with a resistance exhibiting a semiconductor-like temperature dependence. Atomic hydrogenation results in stabilization of the metallic phase of VO2 micro/…
To date, the most widely-studied quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) platform is achieved by dilute doping of magnetic ions into thin films of the alloyed tetradymite topological insulator (TI) (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ (BST). In these films, long-range magnetic ordering of the transition metal substituants opens an exchange gap $Δ$ in the topological surface states, stabilizing spin-polarized, dissipationless edge channels with a nonzero Chern number $\mathcal{C}$. The long-range ordering of the spatially separated magnetic ions is itself mediated by electronic states in the host TI, l…
Hydrogenation is an effective way to tune material property1-5. Traditional techniques for doping hydrogen atoms into solid materials are very costly due to the need for noble metal catalysis and high-temperature/pressure annealing treatment or even high energy proton implantation in vacuum condition5-8. Acid solution contains plenty of freely-wandering protons, but it is difficult to act as a proton source for doping, since the protons always cause corrosions by destroying solid lattices before residing into them. Here we achieve a facile way to hydrogenate monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2) w…
Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed polyhydrides, in this work we demonstrate that small (4 atom %) doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium leads to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to about 200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system at 56-180 GPa, we observed the formation of several previously unknown compounds: C2/m-Sr$_3$H$_{13}$, pseudocubic SrH$_6$, SrH$_9$ with cubic F-43m Sr sublattice, and pseudotetragonal P…
The recently synthesized two-dimensional electride Gd$_2$C was proposed to be a ferromagnetic metal that possesses multiple pairs of Weyl points and may display a large anomalous Hall conductivity [Liu \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{125}, 187203 (2020)]. In view of its layered structure, here we carry out first-principles studies on the magnetic and electronic properties of Gd$_2$C in the ultrathin monolayer limit. We find that monolayer Gd$_2$C remains ferromagnetic like the bulk form and the hydrogenation can effectively tune its magnetism and electronic structure. With one-sided …

We use the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method to calculate the ground state phase diagram of solid molecular hydrogen and examine the stability of the most important insulating phases relative to metallic crystalline molecular hydrogen. We develop a new method to account for finite-size errors by combining the use of twist-averaged boundary conditions with corrections obtained using the Kwee-Zhang-Krakauer (KZK) functional in density functional theory. To study band-gap closure and find the metallization pressure, we perform accurate quasi-particle many-body calculations using the $GW$…
