We use density functional molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) to study the effect of finite temperature exchange-correlation (xc) in Hydrogen. Using the Kohn-Sham approach, the xc energy of the system, $E_{xc}(r_{s})$ is replaced by the xc free energy $f_{xc}(r_{s},Θ)$ within the local density approximation (LDA) based on parametrized path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) data for the uniform electron gas (UEG) at warm dense matter (WDM) conditions. We observe insignificant changes in the equation of state (EOS) at the region of metal-insulator transition compared to the regular LDA form, whereas significant changes are observed for T$>$10000 K, i.e., in the important WDM regime. Thus, our results further corroborate the need for temperature-dependent xc functionals for DFT simulations of WDM systems. Moreover, we present the first finite-temperature DFT results for the EOS of Hydrogen in the electron liquid regime up to $r_{s}=14$ and find a drastic impact (about $20\%$) of thermal xc effects, which manifests at lower temperatures compared to WDM. We expect our results to be important for many applications beyond DFT, like quantum hydrodynamics and astrophysical models.
Results of the experimental study of ordering lanthanum hydrides of LaHX system are presented. It is shown that obtained results can be interpreted as an indirect confirmation of the existence of order-order transformations in LaH2+c hydrides.
Hydrogenation-induced noncollinear magnetic anisotropy is observed from the evolution of the magnetic domains in FePd alloy thin films using magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy. MOKE images reveal complicated competitions between different magnetic anisotropies during hydrogen diffusion into the film. An intriguing enhancement of the hydrogen diffusion rate due to the presence of an initial exchange bias induced by a high magnet field is thereby discovered, pointing to an additional scope of controllability of magnetic metal hydrides as potential future hydrogen sensing and storage mat…
We propose a practical way to overcome the ubiquitous problem of the overestimation of the zero-bias and zero-temperature conductance, which is associated to the use of local approximations to the exchange-correlation functional in Density-Functional Theory when applied to quantum transport. This is done through partial substitution of the local exchange term in the functional by the nonlocal Hartree-Fock exchange. As a non-trivial example of this effect we revisit the smallest molecular bridge studied so far: a Hydrogen molecule placed in between Platinum nanocontacts. When applied to this sy…
Due to the overbinding that is inherent in existing {\em local} approximations to the density-functional formalism, certain reaction energies have not been accessible. Since the generalized gradient approximation significantly decreases the overbinding, prospects for density-functional-based reaction dynamics are promising. Results on the generalized-gradient based determination of the CH3-CH4 hydrogen exchange reaction are presented. Including all Born-Oppenheimer effects an energy barrier of 9.5 kcal/Mole is found which is a very significant improvement over the local-density approximation.
Excited configurations of hydrogen in the oxyhydride BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ ($x=0.1-0.5$), which are considered to be involved in its hydrogen transport and exchange processes, were investigated by positive muon spin relaxation ($μ^+$SR) spectroscopy using muonium (Mu) as a pseudoisotope of hydrogen. Muons implanted into the BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ perovskite lattice were mainly found in two qualitatively different metastable states. One was assigned to a highly mobile interstitial protonic state, which is commonly observed in perovskite oxides. The other was found to form an entangled two spin-$\frac{…
Nørskov and collaborators proposed a simple kinetic model to explain the volcano relation for the hydrogen evolution reaction on transition metal surfaces in such that $ j_0= k_0 f(ΔG_H)$ where j_0 is the exchange current density, $f(ΔG_H)$ is a function of the hydrogen adsorption free energy $ΔG_H$ as computed from density functional theory, and $k_0$ is a universal rate constant. Herein, focusing on the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic medium, we revisit the original experimental data and find that the fidelity of this kinetic model can be significantly improved by invoking metal-depend…
The ab-initio phase diagram of dense hydrogen is very sensitive to errors in the treatment of electronic correlation. Recently, it has been shown that the choice of the density functional has a large effect on the predicted location of both the liquid-liquid phase transition and the solid insulator-to-metal transition in dense hydrogen. To identify the most accurate functional for dense hydrogen applications, we systematically benchmark some of the most commonly used functionals using Quantum Monte Carlo. By considering several measures of functional accuracy, we conclude that the van der Waal…
Using first-principles molecular dynamics, we study the influence of nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) and nonlocal exchange--correlation density functionals (DFs) near molecular dissociation in liquid hydrogen. NQEs strongly influence intramolecular properties, such as bond stability, and are thus an essential part of the dissociation process. Moreover, by including DFs that account for either the self-interaction error or dispersion interactions, we find a much better description of molecular dissociation and metallization than previous studies based on classical protons and/or local or semi-lo…
The influence of hydrogen on dislocation junctions was analysed by incorporating a hydrogen dependent core force into nodal based discrete dislocation dynamics. Hydrogen reduces the core energy of dislocations, which reduces the magnitude of the dislocation core force. We refer to this as hydrogen core force shielding, as it is analogous to hydrogen elastic shielding but occurs at much lower hydrogen concentrations. The dislocation core energy change due to hydrogen was calibrated at the atomic scale accounting for the nonlinear inter-atomic interactions at the dislocation core, giving the mod…
The infuences of hydrogen on the generalized stacking fault (GSF) energies of the basal plane along the <10-10> and <11-20> directions in the hcp Zr were investigated using the first-principles calculation method. The modifications of the GSF energies were studied with respect to the different distances of H atoms away from the slip plane and hydrogen content there. The calculation results have shown that the GSF energies along the < 10-10 > direction drastically reduce when H atoms locate nearby the slip plane. But H atoms slightly decrease the GSF barrier for the <11-20> slipping case. Meanw…
We investigate the van der Waals interactions in solid molecular hydrogen structures. We calculate enthalpy and the Gibbs free energy to obtain zero and finite temperature phase diagrams, respectively. We employ density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the electronic structure and Density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) with van der Waals (vdW) functionals to obtain phonon spectra. We focus on the solid molecular $C2/c$, $Cmca$-12, $P6_3/m$, $Cmca$, and $Pbcn$ structures within the pressure range of 200 $<$ P $<$ 450 GPa. We propose two structures of the $C2/c$ and $Pbcn$ for phase I…
The influence of hydrogen on the structural evolutions of an Al-Mg-Si alloy during natural and artificial ageing was investigated experimentally. The aim of the study was a better understanding of interactions between hydrogen and crystalline defects and especially vacancies. Experimental data demonstrate that during natural ageing in hydrogen environment, the hardening response is delayed. This is attributed to a slower recovery of excess vacancies linked to a lower mobility. To confirm and quantify the influence of hydrogen on the vacancy migration energy, artificial ageing was carried out i…
Tensile stress relaxation is combined with transmission electron microscopy to reveal dramatic changes in dislocation structure and sub structure in pure alpha iron as a result of the effects of dissolved hydrogen. We find that hydrogen charged specimens after plastic deformation display a very characteristic pattern of trailing dipoles and prismatic loops which are absent in uncharged pure metal. We explain these observations by use of a new self consistent kinetic Monte Carlo model, which in fact was initially used to predict the now observed microstructure. The results of this combined theo…
Hydrogen embrittlement in zirconium alloys is one of current challenges of nuclear reactor containment and can lead to a rapid decrease in mechanical properties of materials. Although many previous studies investigated the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement at high hydrogen concentration, few studies concentrate on the mechanism at low hydrogen concentration which is before the formation of hydrides (only in the hydrogen complex state). The purpose of this study is to illuminate the formation mechanism of hydrogen complex. We calculate the formation energy Evac binding energy EH, EH-vac using…
Diffusion limited reactions of point defects were investigated in amorphous SiO2 exposed to UV laser light. Electron spin resonance and in situ absorption measurements at room temperature evidenced the annealing of E' centers and the growth of H(II) centers both occurring in the post-irradiation stage and lasting a few hours. These transients are caused by reactions involving molecular hydrogen H2, made available by dimerization of radiolytic H0.
The integrity of irradiated zirconium based nuclear fuel cladding is related to the precipitation of hydrides which is closely connected with the solubility of hydrogen. A review on the development of measurement technologies is given and the resulting terminal solid solubilities are reflected with respect to the established model of hydrogen solubility in zirconium alloys. The results often allow for a different interpretation than the established model. An alternative qualitative approach is proposed in which the fixed TSSp for the precipitation of zirconium hydrides is replaced by a kinetic…
The paper presents the first-principle calculation of the electron-phonon coupling and the temperature dependence of the intrinsic electrical resistivity of the zirconium-hydrogen system with various hydrogen concentrations. The nature of the anomalous decrease in the electrical resistivity of the Zr-H system with the increase of hydrogen concentration (at the high concentrations of H/Zr$>$1.5) was studied. It was found that the hydrogen concentration, where the resistivity starts to decrease, is very close to the critical concentration of the $δ-\varepsilon$ phase transition. It was shown tha…
We investigate the influence of microstructural traps on hydrogen diffusion and embrittlement in the presence of cyclic loads. A mechanistic, multi-trap model for hydrogen transport is developed, implemented into a finite element framework, and used to capture the variation of crack tip lattice and trapped hydrogen concentrations as a function of the loading frequency, the trap binding energies and the trap densities. We show that the maximum value attained by the lattice hydrogen concentration during the cyclic analysis exhibits a notable sensitivity to the ratio between the loading frequency…

Solution-processed amorphous silicon is a promising material for semiconductor devices. Unfortunately, its manufacturing leaves a high density of defects in the layer, which can be reduced by a treatment with hydrogen radicals. Here, we present an optimized hydrogen treatment, which is used for best performing solar cells made of solution-processed amorphous silicon. We examine the amount and the nature of hydrogen incorporation using infrared absorption and hydrogen effusion. The hydrogen treatment not only increases hydrogen content significantly, it also enlarges the fraction of hydrogen in…
The dissociation of hydrogen molecules on the γ-U(100) surface is systematically studied with the density functional theory method. Through potential energy surface calculations, we find that hydrogen molecules can dissociate without any barriers on the clean γ-U(100) surface. After careful electronic analysis, it is found that charge transfer between the hydrogen s and uranium d electronic states causes the dissociation, which is quite different from the dissociation of hydrogen molecules on other actinide metal surfaces. Considering that doping of 3d transition metal atoms can stabilize the …
We present a detailed ab initio study of the electronic structure and magnetic order of an Fe monolayer on the Ir(001) surface covered by adsorbed oxygen and hydrogen. The results are compared to the clean Fe/Ir(001) system, where recent intensive studies indicated a strong tendency towards an antiferromagnetic order and complex magnetic structures. The adsorption of an oxygen overlayer significantly increases interlayer distance between the Fe layer and the Ir substrate, while the effect of hydrogen is much weaker. We show that the adsorption of oxygen (and also of hydrogen) leads to a p(2$\t…
Pristine graphene is not suitable for hydrogen storage at ambient conditions since it binds the hydrogen molecules only by van der Waals interactions. However, the adsorption energy of the hydrogen molecules can be improved by doping or decorating metal atoms on the graphene monolayer. The doping and decoration processes are challenging due to the oxygen interference in hydrogen adsorption and the clustering issue of metal atoms. To improve the hydrogen adsorption energy in pristine graphene, we have explored the hydrogen storage capabilities of graphene monolayer in the presence of compressiv…
We investigate the influence of uniaxial strain on site occupancy of hydrogen vanadium, using density functional theory. The site occupancy is found to be strongly influenced by the strain state of the lattice. The results provide the conceptual framework of the atomistic description of the observed hysteresis in the alpha to beta phase transition in bulk, as well as the preferred octahedral occupancy of hydrogen in strained V layers.
Perovskite photoelectrodes are being extensively studied in search for photocatalytic materials that can produce hydrogen through water splitting. The solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of these materials is critically dependent on the electrochemical state of their surface. Here, we develop an embedded quantum-mechanical approach using the self-consistent continuum solvation (SCCS) model to predict the relation between band alignment, electrochemical stability, and photocatalytic activity taking into account the long-range polarization of the semiconductor electrode under electrical bias. Using thi…
Ni/Cu(001) is known as a unique system showing the spin-reorientation transition from an in-plane to out-of-plane magnetization direction when the Ni-overlayer thickness is increased. We investigate different relaxed multilayer structures with a hydrogen adlayer using the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method. The relaxed geometries, determined by total energy and atomic force calculations, show that H-monolayer strongly influences the interlayer distance between the Ni-surface and sub-surface layers yielding the outward relaxation of Ni-layer at H/Ni interface. Furthermore, la…
Understanding the role of elastic strain in modifying catalytic reaction rates is crucial for catalyst design, but experimentally, this effect is often coupled with a ligand effect. To isolate the strain effect, we have investigated the influence of externally applied elastic strain on the catalytic activity of metal films towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We show that elastic strain tunes the catalytic activity in a controlled and predictable way. Both theory and experiment show strain controls reactivity in a controlled manner consistent with the qualitative predictions of the H…

We discuss hydrogen diffusion and solubility in aluminum alloyed Fe-Mn alloys. The systems of interest are subjected to tetragonal and isotropic deformations. Based on ab initio modelling, we calculate solution energies, then employ Oriani's theory which reflects the influence of Al alloying via trap site diffusion. This local equilibrium model is complemented by qualitative considerations of Einstein diffusion. Therefore, we apply the climbing image nudged elastic band method to compute the minimum energy paths and energy barriers for hydrogen diffusion. Both for diffusivity and solubility of…
The influence of a c(2x2) ordered interface alloy of 3d transition metals at the ferromagnet/nonmagnet interface on interlayer exchange coupling (IXC), the formation of quantum well states (QWS) and the phenomenon of Giant MagnetoResistance is investigated. We obtained a strong dependence of IXC on interface alloy formation. The GMR ratio is also strongly influenced. We found that Fe, Ni and Cu alloys at the interface enhance the GMR ratio for in-plane geometry by nearly a factor of 2.
A study has been performed using a crystal plasticity based finite element method to understand the effect of various stress states and crystal orientations with respect to loading direction for FCC single crystals in both hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated environment. Simulations have been performed for a variety of stress triaxilaities, Lode parmeters, crystal orientations and hydrogen concentrations. It is observed that crystal orientation has a varied effect on the influence hydrogen has on plastic deformation and void growth. Hydrogen in trap distribution at various stages of the deformat…
Magnetic systems exhibiting exchange bias effect are being considered as materials for applications in data storage devices, sensors and biomedicine. As the size of new mag- netic devices is being continuously reduced, the influence of thermally induced instabilities in magnetic order has to be taken into account during their fabrication process. In this study we show the influence of superparamagnetism on magnetic properties of exchange-biased [CoO/Co/Pd]10 multilayer. We find that the process of progressive thermal blocking of the superparamagnetic clusters causes an unusually fast rise of t…
The growth of graphene on copper by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition in a system free of pumping equipment is investigated. The emphasis is put on the necessity of hydrogen presence during graphene synthesis and cooling. In the absence of hydrogen during the growth step or cooling at slow rate, weak carbon coverage, consisting mostly of oxidized and amorphous carbon, is obtained on the copper catalyst. The oxidation originates from the inevitable occurrence of residual oxidizing impurities in the reactor's atmosphere. Graphene with appreciable coverage can be grown within the vac…
The results of RHEED, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy study of silicon and germanium films with the thickness up to 200 nm grown from molecular beams on dielectric Si$_3$N$_4$/SiO$_2$/Si(001) substrates are presented. Noticeable changes of the intensity of the N$-$H and Si$-$N absorption bands have been observed in the IR absorbance spectra as a result of the deposition of the silicon and germanium films. The thicker was the deposited film, the more considerable were the decrease of N$-$H absorption band intensity and the increase in that of the Si$-$N band. This tendency has been observed during …
The mechanism of ion bombardment induced magnetic patterning of exchange bias layer systems for creating engineered magnetic stray field landscapes is still unclear. We compare results from vectorial magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements to a recently proposed model with time dependent rotatable magnetic anisotropy. Results show massive reduction of rotational magnetic anisotropy compared to all other magnetic anisotropies. We disprove the assumption of comparable weakening of all magnetic anisotropies and show that ion bombardment mainly influences smaller grains in the antiferromagnet.
We report on the impact of magnetoelastic coupling on the magnetocaloric properties of LaFe$_{11.4}$Si$_{1.6}$H$_{1.6}$ in terms of the vibrational density of states, which we determined with $^{57}$Fe nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements and with density-functional-theory based first-principles calculations in the ferromagnetic low-temperature and paramagnetic high-temperature phase. In experiments and calculations, we observe pronounced differences in the shape of the Fe-partial VDOS between non-hydrogenated and hydrogenated samples. This shows that hydrogen does not only…
We study metallization of molecular hydrogen under pressure using exact exchange (EXX) Kohn-Sham density-functional theory in order to avoid well-known underestimates of band gaps associated with standard local-density or generalized-gradient approximations. Compared with the standard methods, the EXX approach leads to considerably (1 - 2 eV) higher gaps and significant changes in the relative energies of different structures. Metallization is predicted to occur at a density of >= 0.6 mol/cm^3 (corresponding to a pressure of >= 400 GPa), consistent with all previous measurements.
We present magnetization measurements on the single molecule magnet Mn6, revealing various tunnel transitions inconsistent with a giant-spin description. We propose a dimeric model of the molecule with two coupled spins S=6, which involves crystal-field anisotropy, symmetric Heisenberg exchange interaction, and antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction. We show that this simplified model of the molecule explains the experimentally observed tunnel transitions and that the antisymmetric exchange interaction between the spins gives rise to tunneling processes between spin states be…

The electrochemical permeation test is one of the most used methods for characterising hydrogen diffusion in metals. The flux of hydrogen atoms registered in the oxidation cell might be fitted to obtain apparent diffusivities. The magnitude of this coefficient has a decisive influence on the kinetics of fracture or fatigue phenomena assisted by hydrogen and depends largely on hydrogen retention in microstructural traps. In order to improve the numerical fitting of diffusion coefficients, a permeation test has been reproduced using FEM simulations considering two approaches: a continuum 1D mode…
The exchange interaction between nanostructured components is an effective way to enhance the magnetic properties of materials. This effect is used in exchange-coupled magnetic composites, which properties are governed by synergetic impact of constituent phases. Texturing is one of the problems that needs to be solved in order for such composites to be used in industry. In this work, we performed experimental and micromagnetic investigation of the exchange-bias properties in Co/Co3O4 nanocomposites based on nanorods array. Specifically, we investigated how the resulting properties will change …
The RKKY interaction between substitutional Mn local moments in GaAs is both spin-direction-dependent and spatially anisotropic. In this Letter we address the strength of these anisotropies using a semi-phenomenological tight-binding model which treats the hybridization between Mn d-orbitals and As p-orbitals perturbatively and accounts realistically for the non-local exchange interaction between their spins. We show that exchange non-locality, valence-band spin-orbit coupling, and band-structure anisotropy all play a role in determining the strength of both effects. We use these results to es…
A detailed theoretical study is presented for the influence of linearly polarised intense terahertz (THz) laser radiation on energy states of hydrogen-like impurities in semiconductors. The dependence of the binding energy for 1s and 2p states on intensity and frequency of the THz radiation has been examined.
We examine the influence of the main approximations employed in density-functional theory descriptions of the solid phase of molecular hydrogen near dissociation. We consider the importance of nuclear quantum effects on equilibrium properties and find that they strongly influence intramolecular properties, such as bond fluctuations and stability. We demonstrate that the combination of both thermal and quantum effects make a drastic change to the predicted optical properties of the molecular solid, suggesting a limited value to dynamical, e.g., finite-temperature, predictions based on classical…
The uniform electron gas and the hydrogen atom play fundamental roles in condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry. The former has an infinite number of electrons uniformly distributed over the neutralizing positively-charged background, and the latter only one electron bound to the proton. The uniform electron gas was used to derive the local spin density approximation (LSDA) to the exchange-correlation functional that undergirds the development of the Kohn-Sham density functional theory. We show here that the ground-state exchange-correlation energies of the hydrogen atom and many other…
With 1.85 billion tons produced per year, steel is the most important material class in terms of volume and environmental impact. While steel is a sustainability enabler, for instance through lightweight design, magnetic devices, and efficient turbines, its primary production is not. For 3000 years, iron has been reduced from ores using carbon. Today 2.1 tons CO2 are produced per ton of steel, causing 30% of the global CO2 emissions in the manufacturing sector, which translates to 6.5% of the global CO2 emissions. These numbers qualify iron- and steel-making as the largest single industrial gr…
