In this work we examine refraction of light by computing full solutions to axion electrodynamics. We also allow for the possibility of an additional plasma component. We then specialise to wavelengths which are small compared to background scales to determine if refraction can be described by geometric optics. We also allow for the possibility of an additional plasma component. In the absence of plasma, for small incidence angles relative to the optical axis, axion electrodynamics and geometric optics are in good agreement, with refraction occurring at $\mathcal{O}(g_{a γγ}^2)$. However, for rays which lie far from the optical axis, the agreement with geometric optics breaks down and the dominant refraction requires a full wave-optical treatment, occurring at $\mathcal{O}(g_{a γγ})$. In the presence of sufficiently large plasma masses, the wave-like nature of light becomes suppressed and geometric optics is in good agreement with the full theory for all rays. Our results therefore suggest the necessity of a more comprehensive study of lensing and ray-tracing in axion backgrounds, including a full account of the novel $\mathcal{O}(g_{a γγ})$ wave-optical contribution to refraction.
An inhomogeneous pseudo-scalar field configuration behaves like an optically active medium. Consequently, if a light ray passes through an axion cloud surrounding a Kerr black hole, it may experience a polarization-dependent bending. We explore the size and relevance of such effect considering both the QCD axion and a generic axion-like particle.
Ultralight axion like particles (ALPs) of mass $m_a\in (10^{-21}\rm{eV}-10^{-22}\rm{eV})$ with axion decay constant $f_a\sim 10^{17}\rm{GeV}$ can be candidates for fuzzy dark matter (FDM). If celestial bodies like Earth and Sun are immersed in a low mass axionic FDM potential and if the ALPs have coupling with nucleons then the coherent oscillation of the axionic field results a long range axion hair outside of the celestial bodies. The range of the axion mediated Yukawa type fifth force is determined by the distance between the Earth and the Sun which fixes the upper bound of the mass of axio…
We study the propagation of light in the presence of a parity-violating coupling between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs). Naively, this interaction could lead to a split of light rays into two separate beams of different polarization chirality and with different refraction angles. However, by using the eikonal method we explicitly show that this is not the case and that ALP clumps do not produce any spatial birefringence. This happens due to non-trivial variations of the photon's frequency and wavevector, which absorb time-derivatives and gradients of the ALP field. We argue that these…
We discuss spectral distortions, time delays and refraction of light in an axion or axion-plasma background. This involves solving the full set of geodesic equations associated to the system of Hamiltonian optics, allowing us to self-consistently take into account the evolution of the momentum, frequency and position of photons. We support our arguments with analytic approximations and full numerical solutions. Remarkably, the introduction of a plasma enhances the sensitivity to axion-induced birefringence, allowing these effects to occur at linear order in the axion-photon coupling even when …

We study the problem of axion-photon coupling in the magnetic field influenced by gravitational radiation. We focus on exact solutions to the equations for axion electrodynamics in the pp-wave gravitational background for two models with initially constant magnetic field. The first model describes the response of an initially constant magnetic field in a gravitational-wave vacuum with unit refraction index; the second model is characterized by a non-unit refraction index prescribed to the presence of ordinary and/or dark matter. We show that both models demonstrate anomalous behavior of the el…
Axion monodromy is a generic phenomenon in string compactifications. We investigate the production of gravitational-wave background from axion monodromy inflation during preheating. By performing lattice simulations using pseudo-spectral methods, we find that significant single-peak stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds are generated during preheating for asymptotic linear $|ϕ|$ and $ϕ^{2/3}$ potentials in axion monodromy inflation and cuspy potentials. This may allow us to explore string compactifications through gravitational waves.
A cold relic axion condensate resulting from vacuum misalignment in the early universe oscillates with a frequency \sim m_a, where m_a is the axion mass. We summarize how the properties of photons propagating in such a medium are modified. Although the effects are small due to the magnitude of the axion-photon coupling, some consequences are striking.
Conformal invariance for bosonic strings in time-dependent backgrounds of graviton, dilaton and Kalb-Ramond field is obtained by imposing Weyl-beta functions to be homogeneous in time, to all orders in $α^{'}$. This construction is possible in any target space dimension, as a result of the non-trivial background configurations. The electromagnetic effects of the antisymmetric tensor field, when coupled to an Abelian (electromagnetic) gauge field, are discussed in the framework of a four-dimensional Minkowski Universe, for concreteness. Non-trivial optical activity is demonstrated, which consti…
We consider an axion cloud around a black hole with background magnetic fields. We calculate the decay rate of the axion cloud due to the axion-photon conversion associated with the axion-photon coupling. For simplicity, we consider the situation where the axion configuration is dominated by a solution for the eigenvalue equation equivalent to that for the Hydrogen atom, and the coupling term can be evaluated by a successive perturbation method. For the monopole background, we find the decay rate of the axion cloud is given by $\sim q^2κ^2(GM)^5μ^8$, where $μ$, $M$, $G$, $κ$ and $q$ are the ax…
We consider the velocity shift of light in presence of radiation emitted by a black body. Within geometric optics formalism we calculate the bending angle of a light ray when there is a gradient in the energy density. We model the bending for two simplified cases. The bending angle is proportional to the inverse square power of the impact parameter ($\propto 1/b^2$) when the dilution of energy density is spherically symmetric. The bending angle is inversely proportional to the impact parameter ($\propto 1/b$) when the energy density dilutes cylindrically. Assuming that a neutron star is an iso…
We derive the electric current on surface of a normal metal or superconductor induced by the light bosonic dark matter, such as axion or hidden photon, by appropriately taking account of the boundary condition of the electric and magnetic field at the surface. We discuss detection possibility of such an electric current.
We study the propagation of photons in a homogeneous axion dark matter background. When the axion decay into two photons is stimulated, the photon field exhibits a parametric instability in a small bandwidth centered on one half of the axion mass. We estimate analytically the enhancement for both coherent and non-coherent axion fields and we find that this effect could be relevant in the context of miniclusters and galactic halos.
We present a reformulation of axion modified electrodynamics with all modifications redefined within the constitutive relations between the D,H,B and E fields. This allows the interpretation of the axion induced background bound charge, polarization current and background polarization and magnetization satisfying the charge-current continuity equation. This representation is of similar form to photon sector odd-parity Lorentz invariance violating background fields. We show that when a DC B-field is applied an oscillating background polarization is induced at a frequency equivalent to the axion…
Electromagnetic waves in a dynamical axion background exhibit superluminal group velocities at high frequencies and instabilities at low frequencies, altering how photons propagate through space. Local disturbances propagate causally, but unlike in ordinary Maxwell theory, propagation occurs inside as well as on the lightcone. For the unstable modes, the energy density in the electromagnetic field grows exponentially along timelike displacements. In this paper we derive retarded Green functions in axion electrodynamics in various limits and study the time-domain properties of propagating signa…
In this work we analyze the propagation of photons in an environment where a strong magnetic field (perpendicular to the photon momenta) coexists with an oscillating cold axion background with the characteristics expected from dark matter in the galactic halo. Qualitatively, the main effect of the combined background is to produce a three-way mixing among the two photon polarizations and the axion. It is interesting to note that in spite of the extremely weak interaction of photons with the cold axion background, its effects compete with those coming from the magnetic field in some regions of …
The overcritical regime of axion-electrodynamics (AED) is investigated. For magnetic fields larger than the characteristic scale linked to AED, quantum vacuum fluctuations due to axion-like fields can dominate over those associated with the electron-positron fields. This hypothetical regime of the dominance of AED over QED is predicted to induce strong birefringence and screening effects. We show that, if the magnetic field lines are curved, extraordinary photons could be canalized along the field direction. It is also shown that the running QED coupling depends on the magnetic field strength,…
Existing searches for cosmic axions relics have relied heavily on the axion being non-relativistic and making up dark matter. However, light axions can be copiously produced in the early Universe and remain relativistic today, thereby constituting a Cosmic $\textit{axion}$ Background (C$a$B). As prototypical examples of axion sources, we consider thermal production, dark-matter decay, parametric resonance, and topological defect decay. Each of these has a characteristic frequency spectrum that can be searched for in axion direct detection experiments. We focus on the axion-photon coupling and …
The 21-cm line signal arising from the hyperfine interaction in hydrogen has an important role in cosmology and provides a unique method for probing of the universe prior to the star formation era. We propose that the spin flip of Hydrogen by the coherent emission/absorption of axions causes a lowering of their spin temperature and can explain the stronger than expected absorption of 21-cm light reported by the EDGES collaboration. We find the analogy of axion interaction with the two level HI with the Jaynes-Cummings model of a two level atom in a cavity and we derive the spin flip frequency …
Primordial decays of string theory moduli at z \sim 10^{12} naturally generate a dark radiation Cosmic Axion Background (CAB) with 0.1 - 1 keV energies. This CAB can be detected through axion-photon conversion in astrophysical magnetic fields to give quasi-thermal excesses in the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray bands. Substantial and observable luminosities may be generated even for axion-photon couplings \ll 10^{-11} GeV^{-1}. We propose that axion-photon conversion may explain the observed excess emission of soft X-rays from galaxy clusters, and may also contribute to the diffuse unresolv…
We explore consequences of the idea that the cooling speed of white dwarfs can be interpreted in terms of axion emission. In this case the Yukawa coupling to electrons has to be g_{ae} 10^-13, corresponding to an axion mass of a few meV. Axions then provide only a small fraction of the cosmic cold dark matter, whereas core-collapse supernovae release a large fraction of their energy in the form of axions. We estimate the diffuse supernova axion background (DSAB) in the universe, consisting of 30 MeV-range axions with a radiation density comparable to the extra-galactic background light. The DS…
Photons traveling in a background electromagnetic field may bend via the vacuum polarization effect with the background field. The bending in a Coulomb field by a heavy nucleus is small even at a large atomic number, rendering it difficult to detect experimentally. As an amplifying mechanism of the effect we consider the bending of light traveling in a chamber of Coulomb gas. The Gaussian nature of the bending in the gas increases the total bending angle in proportion to the square root of the photon travel distance. The enhancement can be orders of magnitude over the bending by a single nucle…
Axion--photon interactions can lead to an enhancement of the electromagnetic field by parametric resonance in the presence of a cold axion background, for modes with a frequency close to half the axion mass. In this paper, we study the role of the axion momentum dispersion as well as the effects of a background gravitational potential, which can detune the resonance due to gravitational redshift. We show, by analytical as well as numerical calculations, that the resonance leads to an exponential growth of the photon field only if (a) the axion momentum spread is smaller than the inverse resona…
We study the pair production of fermions in a time dependent axion background with and without an electric background. We construct the adiabatic mode functions which incorporate the gauge field and the axion velocity dependence of the dispersion relation. The semiclassical approach using this adiabatic basis shows two types of pair production. One is axion-assisted pair production: the presence of the axion velocity gives enhancement and interference effects on the pair production driven by the electric field. The other is axion-driven pair production: the time variation of the axion velocity…
A cold relic axion condensate resulting from vacuum misalignment in the early universe oscillates with a frequency m, where m is the axion mass. We determine the properties of photons propagating in a simplified version of such a background where the sinusoidal variation is replaced by a square wave profile. We prove that previous results that indicated that charged particles moving fast in such a background radiate, originally derived assuming that all momenta involved were much larger than m, hold for long wavelengths too. We also analyze in detail how the introduction of a magnetic field ch…
We study the low-energy effects of space-time non-commutativity on light propagation in a background electromagnetic field. Contrary to some of the previous claims, we find no polarization rotation for vanishing time-space commutator $[\hat{x}^i,\hat{x}^0]= 0$, although dispersion relation is modified, allowing for propagation faster than the vacuum speed of light. For non-zero $[\hat{x}^i,\hat{x}^0]$, as allowed with a proper quantization, a naive rotation effect is found to be actually absent when physical fields are defined through Seiberg-Witten map. We also consider non-commutative QED we…
The equations of electrodynamics are altered in the presence of a classical coherent axion dark matter background field, changing the dispersion relation for electromagnetic waves. Careful measurements of the frequency stability in sensitive atomic clocks could in principle provide evidence for such a background for $f_a \ge 10^7$ GeV. Turning on a background magnetic field might enhance these effects in a controllable way, and interferometric measurements might also be useful for probing the time-varying photon dispersion relation that results from a coherent cosmic axion background.
We discuss some striking properties of photons propagating in a cold axion condensate oscillating coherently in time with a frequency $1/m_a$. Three effects are discussed in this contribution: (a) due to the time dependence of the background, photons moving in the cold axion background have no definite energies and some momenta are not accessible to them. (b) we investigate the combined influence of a magnetic field and the cold axion background and propose a possible interferometric experiment to detect the latter. (c) if the axion condensate has a space dependence, the photon refraction inde…
The first measurement of the diffuse background spectrum at 0.8-1.7 $μ\rm{m}$ from the CIBER experiment has revealed a significant excess of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation compared to the theoretically expected spectrum. We revisit the hypothesis that decays of axionlike particle (ALP) can explain this excess, extending previous analyses to the case of a warm relic population. We show that such a scenario is not excluded by anisotropy measurements nor by stellar cooling arguments. Moreover, we find that the increased extragalactic background light (EBL) does not contradict obse…
We show that the soft X-ray excess in the Coma cluster can be explained by a cosmic background of relativistic axions converting into photons in the cluster magnetic field. We provide a detailed self-contained review of the cluster soft X-ray excess, the proposed astrophysical explanations and the problems they face, and explain how a 0.1-1 keV axion background naturally arises at reheating in many string theory models of the early universe. We study the morphology of the soft excess by numerically propagating axions through stochastic, multi-scale magnetic field models that are consistent wit…
The primordial irreducible gravitational-wave background due to quantum vacuum tensor fluctuations produced during inflation spans a large range of frequencies with an almost scale-invariant spectrum but is too low to be detected by the next generation of gravitational-wave interferometers. We show how this signal is enhanced by a short temporary kination era in the cosmological history (less than 10 e-folds), that can arise at any energy scale between a GeV and the inflationary scale $10^{16}$ GeV. We argue that such kination era is naturally generated by a spinning axion before it gets trapp…
We investigate the propagation of a charged particle in a spatially constant, but time dependent, pseudoscalar background. Physically this pseudoscalar background could be provided by a relic axion density. The background leads to an explicit breaking of Lorentz invariance; as a consequence the process p-> p gamma is possible and the background acts as a shield against extremely energetic cosmic rays, an effect somewhat similar to the GZK cut-off effect. The effect is model independent and can be computed exactly. The hypothetical detection of the photons radiated via this mechanism would prov…
The extragalactic background light is comprised of the cumulative radiation from all galaxies across the history of the universe. The angular power spectrum of the anisotropies of such a background at near-infrared (IR) frequencies lacks of a complete understanding and shows a robust excess which cannot be easily explained with known sources. Dark matter in the form of axion-like particles (ALPs) with a mass around the electronvolt will decay into two photons with wavelengths in the near-IR band, possibly contributing to the background intensity. We compute the near-IR background angular power…
An axion background field induces tiny oscillating electric and magnetic fields in an external static magnetic field. This signature is used to search for axion dark matter. We use standard quantum field theory techniques to obtain an expression for a transition amplitude, from which we identify the classical electromagnetic fields induced by the background axion field. We confirm previous results, that if the spatial size $R$ of the applied static magnetic field is small compared to the axion Compton wavelength $λ$, the induced electric and magnetic fields are parametrically suppressed by the…
The decay of a massive pseudoscalar, scalar and U(1) boson into an electron-positron pair in the presence of strong electromagnetic backgrounds is calculated. Of particular interest is the constant-crossed-field limit, relevant for experiments that aim to measure high-energy axion-like-particle conversion into electron-positron pairs in a magnetic field. The total probability depends on the quantum nonlinearity parameter - a product of field and lightfront momentum invariants. Depending on the seed particle mass, different decay regimes are identified. In the below-threshold case, we find the …
Particle production induced by a time-dependent background is well understood as the projection of the time-evolved initial state onto a set of final states. While the asymptotic initial and final states are well defined in the usual way, the definition of particles and antiparticles at intermediate times in the presence of external fields is ambiguous. These external fields moreover induce divergences which require regularization. In this paper we clarify some subtleties in the computation of transient effects in physical quantities for fermions in a homogeneous axion background, including Sc…
We demonstrate the parametric amplification of the stochastic gravitational wave background during inflationary reheating and during axion/moduli oscillations. This amplification enhances the detectability of the string/inflationary gravity wave signal, leaving a finger-print on the spectrum which might be found with future gravitational wave detectors.
We revisit the framework of axion-like inflation in view of the possibility that the coupling of the inflaton to a non-Abelian topological charge density could lead to the generation of a rapidly thermalizing heat bath. Both dispersive (mass) and absorptive (friction) effects are included. For phenomenologically viable parameters, the system remains in a weak regime of warm inflation (thermal friction $\ll$ Hubble rate). For tensor perturbations we derive an interpolating formula that incorporates both vacuum and thermal production. The latter yields a model-independent frequency shape $\sim f…
Ultra-light axion-like particle (ULAP) with mass $m \sim 10^{-22} ~\mathrm{eV}$ has recently been attracting attention as a possible solution to the small-scale crisis. ULAP forms quasi-stable objects called oscillons/I-balls, which can survive up to a redshift $z \sim 10$ and affect the structure formation on a scale $\sim \mathcal{O}(0.1)~\mathrm{Mpc}$ by amplifying the density fluctuations. We study the effect of oscillons on 21~cm anisotropies caused by neutral hydrogen in minihalos. It is found that this effect can be observed in a wide mass range by future observations such as Square Kil…
Searches for dark matter decaying into photons constrain its lifetime to be many orders of magnitude larger than the age of the Universe. A corollary statement is that the abundance of any particle that can decay into photons over cosmological timescales is constrained to be much smaller than the cold dark-matter density. We show that an $\textit{irreducible}$ freeze-in contribution to the relic density of axions is in violation of that statement in a large portion of the parameter space. This allows us to set stringent constraints on axions in the mass range $100\rm \;eV - 100\; MeV$. At $10\…
We find that a fuzzy dark matter background and the mG scale magnetic field in the galactic center can give rise to a radiation with a very large energy release. The frequency of the radiation field is the same as the frequency of the oscillating axion-like background field. We show that there is an energy transfer between the fuzzy dark matter sector and the electromagnetic sector because of the presence of the generated radiation field and the galactic magnetic field. The energy release rate of radiation is found to be very slow in comparison with the energy of fuzzy dark matter but could be…
