Axion--photon interactions can lead to an enhancement of the electromagnetic field by parametric resonance in the presence of a cold axion background, for modes with a frequency close to half the axion mass. In this paper, we study the role of the axion momentum dispersion as well as the effects of a background gravitational potential, which can detune the resonance due to gravitational redshift. We show, by analytical as well as numerical calculations, that the resonance leads to an exponential growth of the photon field only if (a) the axion momentum spread is smaller than the inverse resonance length, and (b) the gravitational detuning distance is longer than the resonance length. For realistic parameter values, both effects strongly suppress the resonance and prevent the exponential growth of the photon field. In particular, the redshift due to the gravitational potential of our galaxy prevents the resonance from developing for photons in the observable frequency range, even assuming that all the dark matter consists of a perfectly cold axion condensate. For axion clumps with masses below $\sim 10^{-13}\, M_\odot$, the momentum spread condition is more restrictive, whereas, for more massive clumps, the redshift condition dominates.
Axions and axion-like particles generically couple to QED via the axion-photon-photon interaction. This leads to a modification of Maxwell's equations known in the literature as axion-electrodynamics. The new form of Maxwell's equations gives rise to a new parametric instability in which a strong pump decays into a scattered light wave and an axion. This axion mode grows exponentially in time and leads to a change in the polarisation of the initial laser beam, therefore providing a signal for detection. Currently operating laser systems can put bounds on the axion parameter space, however long…
Axion cold dark matter from standard misalignment typically requires a decay constant $f_a~\gtrsim~10^{11}$ GeV. Kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance easily allow lower values of $f_a$ when the radial Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking field takes large initial values. Here, we consider the effects of inflation on kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance. We assume that the initial PQ field value is determined by quantum fluctuations, and is set by the Hubble parameter during inflation, $H_I$, and the PQ field mass. PQ field oscillations begin before or after the completion of r…

One of the most compelling candidates for Dark Matter (DM) are light pseudo-scalar particles (axions), motivated by the strong CP problem and axiverse scenario in string theory. Depending on their mass and type of self-interaction, these particles can build self-gravitating configurations such as compact objects, DM clumps or even galactic DM halos. On the other hand, superradiant instabilities can produce long-living extended configurations (scalar clouds) gravitating around Black Holes (BHs). As these scalars are real and harmonic, their interaction with the other matter components can induc…
We study parametric instability of compact axion dark matter structures decaying to radiophotons. Corresponding objects - Bose (axion) stars, their clusters, and clouds of diffuse axions - form abundantly in the postinflationary Peccei-Quinn scenario. We develop general description of parametric resonance incorporating finite-volume effects, backreaction, axion velocities and their (in)coherence. With additional coarse-graining, our formalism reproduces kinetic equation for virialized axions interacting with photons. We derive conditions for the parametric instability in each of the above obje…
We propose a QCD axion model where the origin of PQ symmetry and suppression of axion isocurvature perturbations are explained by introducing an extra dimension. Each extra quark-antiquark pair lives on branes separately to suppress PQ breaking operators. The size of the extra dimension changes after inflation due to an interaction between inflaton and a bulk scalar field, which implies that the PQ symmetry can be drastically broken during inflation to suppress undesirable axion isocurvature fluctuations.
We study the local effects of an external time-dependent magnetic field on axion-like particles assuming they are all the dark matter of the universe. We find that under suitable conditions the amplitude of the dark matter field can resonate parametrically. The resonance depends on the velocity of the axion-like particles and scales quadratically with the strength} of the external magnetic field, $\fracρ{ρ_{DM}} \sim {B_0}^3$. By considering typical experimental benchmark values, we find the resonance could amplify around two orders of magnitude the local energy density stored in the dark matt…
We point out that cosmological constraint from the axion isocurvature perturbation is relaxed if the Higgs field obtains a large field value during inflation in the DFSZ axion model. This scenario is consistent with the Higgs inflation model, in which two Higgs doublets have non-minimal couplings and play a role of inflaton.

We propose a novel mechanism to suppress the isocurvature perturbations of the QCD axion. The point is that the QCD interactions become strong at an intermediate or high energy scale in the very early Universe, if the Higgs field has a sufficiently large expectation value. The effective QCD scale can be even higher in the presence of extra colored particles. We show that the QCD axion then becomes so heavy during inflation that its isocurvature perturbations are significantly suppressed, thereby relaxing the constraint on the inflation scale.
The Peccei-Quinn mechanism suffers from the problem of the isocurvature perturbations. The isocurvature perturbations are suppressed if the Peccei-Quinn breaking scale is large during inflation. The oscillation of the Peccei-Quinn breaking field after inflation, however, leads to the formation of domain walls due to the parametric resonance effect. In this paper, we discuss the evolution of the Peccei-Quinn breaking field after inflation in detail, and propose a model where the parametric resonance is ineffective and hence domain walls are not formed. We also discuss consistency of our model w…
We initiate a study on various cosmological imprints of string axions whose scalar potentials have plateau regions. In such cases, we show that a delayed onset of oscillation generically leads to a parametric resonance instability. In particular, for ultralight axions, the parametric resonance can enhance the power spectrum slightly below the Jeans scale, alleviating the tension with the Lyman $α$ forest observations. We also argue that a long-lasting resonance can lead to an emission of gravitational waves at the frequency bands which are detectable by gravitational wave interferometers and p…
Light axion-like particles occur in many theories of beyond-Standard-Model physics, and may make up some or all of the universe's dark matter. One of the ways they can couple to the Standard Model is through the electromagnetic $F_{μν} \tilde F^{μν}$ portal, and there is a broad experimental program, covering many decades in mass range, aiming to search for axion dark matter via this coupling. In this paper, we derive limits on the absorbed power, and coupling sensitivity, for a broad class of such searches. We find that standard techniques, such as resonant cavities and dielectric haloscopes,…

We consider the instability of fluctuations in an oscillating scalar field which obeys the Sine-Gordon equation. We present simple closed-form analytic solutions describing the parametric resonance in the Sine-Gordon model. The structure of the resonance differs from that obtained with the Mathieu equation which is usually derived with the small angle approximation to the equation for fluctuations. The results are applied to axion cosmology, where the oscillations of the classical axion field, with a Sine-Gordon self-interaction potential, constitute the cold dark matter of the universe. When …
We propose a simple mechanism to suppress axion isocurvature fluctuations using hidden sector magnetic monopoles. This allows for the Peccei-Quinn scale to be of order the unification scale consistently with high scale inflation.
We propose a new mechanism to suppress the axion isocurvature perturbation, while producing the right amount of axion dark matter, within the framework of supersymmetric axion models with the axion scale induced by supersymmetry breaking. The mechanism involves an intermediate phase transition to generate the Higgs μ-parameter, before which the weak scale is comparable to the axion scale and the resulting stronger QCD yields an axion mass heavier than the Hubble scale over a certain period. Combined with that the Hubble-induced axion scale during the primordial inflation is well above the inte…
The dark axion portal is a coupling of an axion-like particle to a dark photon kinetically mixed with the visible photon. We show how this portal, when applied to the relaxion, can lead to cosmological relaxation of the weak scale using dark photon production. The key backreaction mechanism involves the Schwinger effect: As long as electroweak symmetry is unbroken, Schwinger production of massless Standard Model fermions, which carry dark millicharges, suppresses the dark photon production. Once the electroweak symmetry is broken, the fermions acquire mass and the suppression is lifted. An enh…
We investigate the production of photons from coherently oscillating, spatially localized clumps of axionic fields (oscillons and axion stars) in the presence of external electromagnetic fields. We delineate different qualitative behaviour of the photon luminosity in terms of an effective dimensionless coupling parameter constructed out of the axion-photon coupling, and field amplitude, oscillation frequency and radius of the axion star. For small values of this dimensionless coupling, we provide a general analytic formula for the dipole radiation field and the photon luminosity per solid angl…

We investigate the bursts of electromagnetic and scalar radiation resulting from the collision, and merger of oscillons made from axion-like particles using 3+1 dimensional lattice simulations of the coupled axion-gauge field system. The radiation into photons is suppressed before the merger. However, it becomes the dominant source of energy loss after the merger if a resonance condition is satisfied. Conversely, the radiation in scalar waves is dominant during initial merger phase but suppressed after the merger. The backreaction of scalar and electromagnetic radiation is included in our simu…
Parametric excitation of axions by two beating electromagnetic fields is considered here. This can be used as a new concept for active experiments using the existing ultra-intense laser systems. Comparison is made of this active experimental concept with the present day passive experiments using static magnetic fields.
The idea that the gravity-induced breaking of global symmetries is encoded in Planck-suppressed operators is not scale-invariant: heavy particles which have nothing to do with the UV completion of gravity can mediate the breaking and produce low-energy operators (partly) suppressed by their own mass scales. Such contributions from heavy fields are typically subdominant with respect to the least Planck-suppressed operators, unless the latter are forbidden, as is usual in solutions to the axion quality problem based on four-dimensional gauge symmetries. Therefore, with a focus on axion physics, …
We study the propagation of photons in a homogeneous axion dark matter background. When the axion decay into two photons is stimulated, the photon field exhibits a parametric instability in a small bandwidth centered on one half of the axion mass. We estimate analytically the enhancement for both coherent and non-coherent axion fields and we find that this effect could be relevant in the context of miniclusters and galactic halos.
Recently there has been a surge of new experimental proposals to search for ultra-light axion dark matter with axion mass, $m_a\lesssim1\,μ$eV. Many of these proposals search for small oscillating magnetic fields induced in or around a large static magnetic field. Lately, there has been interest in alternate detection schemes which search for oscillating electric fields in a similar setup. In this paper, we explicitly solve Maxwell's equations in a simplified geometry and demonstrate that in this mass range, the axion induced electric fields are heavily suppressed by boundary conditions. Unfor…
We implement inflation in a non-supersymmetric SU(5) model based on a non-minimal coupling of the axion field to gravity. The isocurvature fluctuations are adequately suppressed, axions comprise the dark matter, proton lifetime estimates are of order 8e34-3e35 years, and the observed baryon asymmetry arises via non-thermal leptogenesis. The presence of low scale colored scalars ensures unification of the Standard Model gauge couplings and also helps in stabilizing the electroweak vacuum.

Dark matter axion condensates may experience stimulated decays into photon pairs. This effect has been often interpreted as a parametric resonance of photons from the axion-photon coupling, leading to an exponential growth of the photon occupation number in a narrow instability band. Most of the previous literature does not consider the possible evolution of the axion field due to the photon growth. We revisit this effect presenting a mean field solution of the axion-photon kinetic equations, in terms of number of photons and pair correlations. We study the limit of no axion depletion, recover…
For low-mass (frequency $\ll$ GHz) axions, dark matter detection experiments searching for an axion-photon-photon coupling generally have suppressed sensitivity, if they use a static background magnetic field. This geometric suppression can be alleviated by using a high-frequency oscillating background field. Here, we present a high-level sketch of such an experiment, using superconducting cavities at $\sim$ GHz frequencies. We discuss the physical limits on signal power arising from cavity properties, and point out cavity geometries that could circumvent some of these limitations. We also con…

The axion causes two serious cosmological problems, domain wall and isocurvature perturbation problems. Linde pointed that the isocurvature perturbations are suppressed when the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) scalar field takes a large value $\sim M_{\text{pl}}$ (Planck scale) during inflation. In this case, however, the PQ field with large amplitude starts to oscillate after inflation and large fluctuations of the PQ field are produced through parametric resonance, which leads to the formation of domain walls. We consider a supersymmetric axion model and examine whether domain walls are formed by using la…
We study the scalar-tensor-tensor non-Gaussian signal in an inflationary model comprising also an axion coupled with SU(2) gauge fields. In this set-up, metric fluctuations are sourced by the gauge fields already at the linear level providing an enhanced chiral gravitational waves spectrum. The same mechanism is at work in generating an amplitude for the three-point function that is parametrically larger than in standard single-field inflation.
In the early universe, the potential of a scalar field can be significantly modified, and the scalar field may be trapped for a long time in a different location than the current vacuum. The trapping effect can increase or decrease the scalar abundance. For instance, in thermal inflation, a scalar field is trapped at the top of the potential by a thermal effect and dominates the universe to drive inflation for a short period of time. On the other hand, a scalar abundance can be exponentially suppressed in the adiabatic suppression mechanism, where a scalar field moves adiabatically by a time-d…
We investigate the baryon asymmetry in the supersymmetry Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky axion model without R-parity. It turns out that the R-parity violating terms economically explain the atmospheric mass-squared difference of neutrinos and the appropriate amount of baryon asymmetry through the Affleck-Dine mechanism. In this model, the axion is a promising candidate for the dark matter and the axion isocurvature perturbation is suppressed due to the large field values of Peccei-Quinn fields. Remarkably, in some parameter regions explaining the baryon asymmetry and the axion dark matter …
We study derivatively coupled fermions in axion-driven inflation, specifically $m_ϕ^2ϕ^2$ and monodromy inflation, and calculate particle production during the inflationary epoch and the post-inflationary axion oscillations. During inflation, the rolling axion acts as an effective chemical potential for helicity which biases the gravitational production of one fermion helicity over the other. This mechanism allows for efficient gravitational production of heavy fermion states that would otherwise be highly suppressed. Following inflation, the axion oscillates and fermions with both helicities …
Light axions ($m_a \lesssim 10^{-10}$ eV) can form dense clouds around rapidly rotating astrophysical black holes via a mechanism known as rotational superradiance. The coupling between axions and photons induces a parametric resonance, arising from the stimulated decay of the axion cloud, which can rapidly convert regions of large axion number densities into an enormous flux of low-energy photons. In this work we consider the phenomenological implications of a superradiant axion cloud undergoing resonant decay. We show that the low energy photons produced from such events will be absorbed ove…
Existing searches for cosmic axions relics have relied heavily on the axion being non-relativistic and making up dark matter. However, light axions can be copiously produced in the early Universe and remain relativistic today, thereby constituting a Cosmic $\textit{axion}$ Background (C$a$B). As prototypical examples of axion sources, we consider thermal production, dark-matter decay, parametric resonance, and topological defect decay. Each of these has a characteristic frequency spectrum that can be searched for in axion direct detection experiments. We focus on the axion-photon coupling and …
We demonstrate the parametric amplification of the stochastic gravitational wave background during inflationary reheating and during axion/moduli oscillations. This amplification enhances the detectability of the string/inflationary gravity wave signal, leaving a finger-print on the spectrum which might be found with future gravitational wave detectors.
We reexamine the axion-photon couplings in various invisible axion models motivated by the recent proposal of using optical interferometry at the ASST facility in the SSCL to search for axion. We illustrate that the assignment of $U(1)_{PQ}$ charges for the fermion fields plays an important role in determining the couplings. Several simple non-minimal invisible axion models with suppressed and enhanced axion-photon couplings are constructed, respectively. We also discuss the implications of possible new experiments to detect solar axions by conversion to $X$-rays in a static magnetic apparatus…
The radiative decay of the axion $a \to γγ$ is investigated in an external electromagnetic field in DFSZ model in which axion couples to both quarks and leptons at tree level. The decay probability is strongly catalyzed by the external field, namely, the field removes the main suppression caused by the smallness of the axion mass.
Axion-like fields are naturally generated by a mechanism of anomaly cancellation of one or more anomalous gauge abelian symmetries at the Planck scale, emerging as duals of a two-form from the massless bosonic sector of string theory. This suggests an analogy of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation, at field theory level, which results in one or more Stueckelberg pseudoscalars. In the case of a single Stueckelberg pseudoscalar $b$, vacuum misalignments at phase transitions in the early Universe at the GUT scale provide a small mass - due to instanton suppression of the periodic …
It is known that a coherently oscillating axion field is a candidate of the dark matter. In the presence of the oscillating axion, the photon can be resonantly produced through the parametric amplification. In the universe, there also exist cosmological magnetic fields which are coherent electromagnetic fields. In the presence of magnetic fields, an axion can be converted into a photon, and vice versa. Thus, it is interesting to investigate what happens for the axion-photon system in the presence of both the axion dark matter and the magnetic fields. This system can be regarded as a coupled sy…
