We investigate the propagation of a charged particle in a spatially constant, but time dependent, pseudoscalar background. Physically this pseudoscalar background could be provided by a relic axion density. The background leads to an explicit breaking of Lorentz invariance; as a consequence the process p-> p gamma is possible and the background acts as a shield against extremely energetic cosmic rays, an effect somewhat similar to the GZK cut-off effect. The effect is model independent and can be computed exactly. The hypothetical detection of the photons radiated via this mechanism would provide an indirect way of verifying the cosmological relevance of axions.
Pseudoscalar-photon interactions were proposed in the study of the relations among equivalence principles. The interaction of pseudoscalar axion with gluons was proposed as a way to solve the strong CP problem. Subsequent proposal of axion as a dark matter candidate has been a focus of search. Motivation from superstring theories add to its importance. After a brief introduction and historical review, we present (i) the current status of our optical experiment using high-finesse Fabry-Perot resonant cavity - Q & A experiment - to detect pseudoscalar-photon interactions, (ii) the constraints on…
We compute the flux of axions from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Axions can be produced in the accretion disk by the Compton, Bremsstrahlung and Primakoff processes. We find that the axion luminosity due to these processes is negligible in comparison to the photon luminosity from AGNs. We also compute the luminosity of a hypothetical pseudoscalar, with very small mass, from the AGN atmosphere due to the phenomenon of pseudoscalar-photon mixing in background magnetic field. In this case we find that for some parameter ranges, the pseudoscalar flux can exceed that of photons. We comment on the i…
I review the dark energy solutions by a very light pseudoscalar called "quintessential axion". For the explicit breaking terms, we consider both the global anomaly U(1)$_{\rm global}\times$SU(2)$_W^2$ and the potential $ΔV$. At the field theory level, we will present a strategy for picking up one such pseudoscalar among plenty of pseudoscalars. At string level, numerous antisymmetric tensor fields are pseudoscalars. Including these, we present a confining force example via a $Z_{12-I}$ orbifold compactification of SO(32) heterotic string. In addition, we also aim to draw attention on almost ma…
Axions are pseudo-scalar particles, those arise because of breaking of Peccei Queen (PQ) symmetry. Axions have a tree level coupling to two photons. As a consequence there exists a tree level coupling of axion to photon in a magnetic field. However, in an external magnetic field, there exists a new loop induced, axion photon vertex, that gives rise to axion photon coupling. The strength of the tree level axion photon coupling in magnetic field is known to be model dependent. However in a magnetic field, the new loop induced coupling has some interesting features. This note discusses the new ax…
A cosmological pseudoscalar field coupled to hypercharge topological number density can exponentially amplify hyperelectric and hypermagnetic fields in the symmetric phase of the electroweak plasma while coherently rolling or oscillating, leading to the formation of a condensate of topological number density. The topological number can be converted, under certain conditions, into baryon number in sufficient amount to explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. We focus on a singlet elementary hypercharge axion (HCA) whose only coupling to standard model fields is to hypercharge topo…
The effects of an external time-dependent magnetic field in the conversion probability of photon-to-axion-like particles are studied. Our findings show that for a certain time regime, the amplitude of the produced axion-like field can be enlarged with respect to the static case, thus, enhancing the probability of conversion.
We investigate the propagation of a charged particle in a spatially constant but time dependent pseudoscalar background. Physically this pseudoscalar background could be provided by a relic axion density. The background leads to an explicit breaking of Lorentz invariance; as a consequence processes such as $p\to p γ$ or $e\to e γ$ are possible within some kinematical constraints. The phenomenon is described by the QED lagrangian extended with a Chern-Simons term that contains a 4-vector which characterizes the breaking of Lorentz invariance induced by the time-dependent background. While the r…
An interaction of a pseudoscalar particle with two photons induced by an external electromagnetic field is used to study the photon decay $γ\to γa$ where a is a pseudoscalar particle associated with the Peccei-Quinn U(1) symmetry. The field-induced axion emission by photon is analyzed as a possible source of energy losses by astrophysical objects.
We study fermions derivatively coupled to axion-like or pseudoscalar fields, and show that the axial vector current of the fermions is not conserved in the limit where the fermion is massless. This apparent violation of the classical chiral symmetry is due to the background axion field. We compute the contributions to this anomalous Ward identity due to the pseudoscalar field alone, which arise in Minkowski space, as well as the effects due to an interaction with an external gravitational field. For the case of massless fermions, these interactions induce terms in the axion effective action th…
Recently, it was shown, that the absence of circular polarization of visible light from quasars, severely constrains the interpretation of axion like particles (ALPs) as a solution for the generation of the linear polarization. Furthermore, the new observation of the linear polarization in the radio wavelength from quasars, similar to the earlier observation performed in the optical band, makes the ALPs scenario inconsistent with at least one of the two observations. In this study we extend this scenario, to two axion like particles, one scalar and another pseudoscalar. We find, that the effec…
Axion-like fields are naturally generated by a mechanism of anomaly cancellation of one or more anomalous gauge abelian symmetries at the Planck scale, emerging as duals of a two-form from the massless bosonic sector of string theory. This suggests an analogy of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation, at field theory level, which results in one or more Stueckelberg pseudoscalars. In the case of a single Stueckelberg pseudoscalar $b$, vacuum misalignments at phase transitions in the early Universe at the GUT scale provide a small mass - due to instanton suppression of the periodic …
Many theoretically well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model contain heavy pseudoscalars that couple to hypercharge topological density. The cosmological dynamics of such hypercharge axions could, under certain conditions, lead to generation of a net baryon number in a sufficient amount to explain the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe. We examine the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and string/M-theory models and determine specific conditions which heavy axion-like pseudoscalars must satisfy to successfully drive baryogenesis. We find that all candidates in the Minimal Super…
Using a fundamental discrete symmetry, $\mathbb{Z}_N$, we construct a two-axion model with the QCD axion solving the strong-$CP$ problem, and an ultralight axion (ULA) with $m_{\rm ULA}\approx 10^{-22}\text{ eV}$ providing the dominant form of dark matter (DM). The ULA is light enough to be detectable in cosmology from its imprints on structure formation, and may resolve the small-scale problems of cold DM. The necessary relative DM abundances occur without fine tuning in constructions with decay constants $f_{\rm ULA}\sim 10^{17}\text{ GeV}$, and $f_{\rm QCD}\sim 10^{11}\text{ GeV}$. An examp…
We investigate the effective interaction of a pseudoscalar particle with two photons in an external electromagnetic field in the general case of all external particles being off the mass shell. This interaction is used to study the radiative decay $a \to γγ$ of the axion, a pseudoscalar particle associated with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and the crossing channel of photon splitting $γ\to γa$. It is shown that the external field removes the suppression associated with the smallness of the axion mass and so leads to the strong catalysis of these processes. The field-induced axion emission by pho…
Pseudoscalars appearing in particle physics are reviewd systematically. From the fundamental point of view at an ultra-violat completed theory, they can be light if they are realized as pseudo-Goldstone bosons of some spontaneously broken global symmetries. The spontaneous breaking scale is parametrized by the decay constant $f$. The global symmetry is defined by the lowest order terms allowed in the effective theory consistent with the gauge symmetry in question. Since any global symmetry is known to be broken at least by quantum gravitational effects, all pseudoscalars should be massive. The…
Axions and other pseudoscalar fields comprise an interesting class of ultralight dark matter candidates, that may independently play a role in solving the strong $CP$ problem. In the presence of $CP$-violating sources, these pseudoscalar fields can develop a coherent non-derivative coupling to nucleons, $\bar g_{aNN}$, thus mediating `mass-mass' and `mass-spin' forces in matter that can be probed experimentally. We revisit the non-perturbative generation of these $CP$-odd axion forces, and refine estimates of $\bar g_{aNN}$ generated by the EDMs and color EDMs of quarks. We also revisit the St…
We investigate the most interesting decay processes involving axions, photons and the lightest pseudoscalar mesons, making use of a chiral effective Lagrangian model with $L=3$ light quark flavors, which also includes the flavor-singlet pseudoscalar meson and implements the $U(1)$ axial anomaly of the fundamental theory. In particular, we compute the electromagnetic coupling of the axion to photons and we compare our result with the prediction of the Chiral Effective Lagrangian with $L=2$ light quark flavors. Moreover, we study the decay channels $η/η'\rightarrow ππa$ and we estimate the corre…
In this work, I study the mixing of photons with pseudoscalar particles and vice-versa in the presence of an external magnetic field and a pseudoscalar field. I solve exactly for the first time in the literature the equations of motion of the electromagnetic field coupled with a pseudoscalar field in the presence of a constant magnetic field with arbitrary direction with respect to the direction of propagation of the fields in vacuum. In addition, I also solve exactly the equations of motion in a magnetized plasma/gas for perpendicular propagation with respect to the external magnetic field. B…
Axions or similar hypothetical pseudoscalar bosons may have a small CP-violating scalar Yukawa interaction g_s(N) with nucleons, causing macroscopic monopole-dipole forces. Torsion-balance experiments constrain g_p(e) g_s(N), whereas g_p(N) g_s(N) is constrained by the depolarization rate of ultra-cold neutrons or spin-polarized nuclei. However, the pseudoscalar couplings g_p(e) and g_p(N) are strongly constrained by stellar energy-loss arguments and g_s(N) by searches for anomalous monopole-monopole forces, together providing the most restrictive limits on g_p(e) g_s(N) and g_p(N) g_s(N). The…
We present a brief overview of recently proposed detection schemes for axion, axion-like pseudoscalar particle and topological defect dark matter. We focus mainly on the possibility of using atomic and molecular systems for dark matter detection. For axions and axion-like particles, these methods are complementary probes to ongoing photon-axion interconversion experiments and astrophysical observations. For topological defects, these methods are complementary to conventional astrophysical search schemes based on gravitational signatures.
In a class of (pseudoscalar) inflation, inflationary phase is followed by a kination phase, where the Universe is dominated by the kinetic energy of the inflaton that runs away in a vanishing scalar potential. In this class of postinflationary evolution of the Universe, reheating of the Universe cannot be achieved by the inflaton particle decay, which requires its coherent oscillation in a quadratic potential. In this study, we explore the U(1) gauge field production through the Chern-Simons coupling between the pseudoscalar inflaton and the gauge field during the kination era and examine the …
In models of inflation driven by an axion-like pseudoscalar field, the inflaton, a, may couple to the standard model hypercharge via a Chern-Simons-type interaction, $L \subset a/(4Λ) F\tilde{F}$. This coupling results in explosive gauge field production during inflation, especially at its last stage, which has interesting phenomenological consequences: For one thing, the primordial hypermagnetic field is maximally helical. It is thus capable of sourcing the generation of nonzero baryon number, via the standard model chiral anomaly, around the time of electroweak symmetry breaking. For another…
Little Higgs models have an enlarged global symmetry which makes the Higgs boson a pseudo-Goldstone boson. This symmetry typically contains spontaneously broken U(1) subgroups which provide light electroweak-singlet pseudoscalars. Unless such particles are absorbed as the longitudinal component of $Z'$ states, they appear as pseudoscalars in the physical spectrum at the electroweak scale. We outline their significant impact on Little Higgs phenomenology and analyze a few possible signatures at the LHC and other future colliders in detail. In particular, their presence significantly affects the…
Pseudoscalar particles like axion-like particles generically couple to two photons, giving rise to the possibility of oscillations with photons in an external magnetic field. These oscillations could lead to measurable imprints in the electromagnetic spectrum of astrophysical sources if the coupling to photons is strong enough. One possible signature is the presence of irregularities in a limited energy range of the spectrum. In this study, anomalous irregularities are searched for in the spectrum of the bright extragalactic TeV emitter PKS 2155-304 as measured by H.E.S.S. to put constraints o…
Pseudoscalar particles, with almost zero mass and very weak coupling to the visible matter, arise in many extensions of the standard model of particle physics. Their mixing with photons in the presence of an external magnetic field leads to many interesting astrophysical and cosmological consequences. This mixing depends on the medium properties, the momentum of the photon and the background magnetic field. Here we give a general treatment of pseudoscalar-photon oscillations in a background magnetic field, taking the Faraday term into account. We give predictions valid in all regimes, under th…
The measurements of the linear polarisation of visible light from quasars give strong evidence for large-scale coherent orientations of their polarisation vectors in some regions of the sky. We show that these observations can be explained by the mixing of the photons with very light pseudoscalar (axion-like) particles in extragalactic magnetic fields during their propagation. We present a new treatment in terms of wave packets and discuss the circular polarisation.
Democracy among the same type of particles is a useful paradigm in studying masses and interactions of particles with supersymmetry(SUSY) or without SUSY. This simple idea predicts the presence of massless particles. We attempt to use one of these massless pseudoscalar particles as generating the cosmological dark energy(DE) potential. To achieve the extremely shallow potential of DE, the pseudoscalar boson is required not to couple to the QCD anomaly. So, we consider two pseudoscalars, one coupling to the QCD anomaly (i.e. QCD axion) and the other not coupling to the QCD anomaly. To obtain th…
Transformation of CMB photons into light pseudoscalar particles at post big bang nucleosynthesis epoch is considered. Using the present day value of a large scale magnetic field to estimate it at earlier cosmological epochs, the oscillation probability of photons into light pseudoscalar particles with an account of coherence breaking in cosmological plasma is calculated. Demanding that the photon transformation does not lead to an exceedingly large CMB spectral distortion and temperature anisotropy, the constraints on the coupling constant of axion like particles to photons, $ g_{ϕγ} B \lesssi…
The OSQAR photon regeneration experiment searches for pseudoscalar and scalar axion-like particles by the method of "Light Shining Through a Wall", based on the assumption that these weakly interacting sub-eV particles couple to two photons to give rise to quantum oscillations with optical photons in strong magnetic field. No excess of events has been observed, which constrains the di-photon coupling strength of both pseudoscalar and scalar particles down to $5.7 \cdot 10^{-8}$ GeV$^{-1}$ in the massless limit. This result is the most stringent constraint on the di-photon coupling strength eve…
We review recent work on the effective field theory description and the phenomenology of axion-like and scalar particles in models characterized by gauge and/or conformal anomalies.
If the inflaton is a pseudoscalar, then it naturally interacts with gauge fields via an axion-like coupling to $F_{μν} \tilde{F}^{μν}$. Through this coupling, the rolling inflaton produces quanta of the gauge field, that in their turn source the tensor components of the metric perturbations. Due to the parity-violating nature of the system, the right- and the left-handed tensor modes have different amplitudes. Such an asymmetry manifests itself in the form of non-vanishing TB and EB correlation functions in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We compute the amplitude of the parity-violating…
We calculate the rate for pair production of light pseudoscalars by strong inhomogeneous and static electric (magnetic) fields. We show that, in the case of axions, the stability of atoms over cosmic lifetimes is jeopardised unless the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scale $f_a$ is larger than ${\cal O} (10^{10} GeV)$.

The pseudoscalar-photon mixing in presence of large scale magnetic field induces polarization in light from distant cosmological sources. We study the effect of these pseudoscalars or axion like particles (ALPs) on Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) and constrain the product of mixing strength $g_ϕ$ times background magnetic field $B$. The background magnetic field has been assumed to be primordial and we assume large scale correlations with the correlation length of 1Mpc. We use WMAP seven year foreground reduced polarization and temperature data to constrain pseudoscalar-photon mix…
In a previous work we investigated the propagation of fast moving charged particles in a spatially constant but slowly time dependent pseudoscalar background, such as the one provided by cold relic axions. The background induces cosmic rays to radiate in the low-energy spectrum. While the energy loss caused by this mechanism on the primary cosmic rays is negligible, we investigate the hypothetical detection of the photons radiated and how they could provide an indirect way of verifying the cosmological relevance of axions. Assuming that the cosmic ray flux is of the form J(E)~ E^-g we find tha…
The non-resonant conversion of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons into scalar as well as light pseudoscalar particles such as axion-like particles (ALPs) in the presence of turbulent magnetic fields can cause a unique, spatially fluctuating spectral distortion in the CMB. We use the publicly available Planck temperature maps for the frequency channels (70-545 GHz) to obtain the first ALP distortion map using $45\%$ clean part of the sky. The $95^{th}$ percentile upper limit on the RMS fluctuation of ALP distortions from the cleanest part of the CMB sky at $15$ arcmin angular resolution …
We study an extension of QED involving a light pseudoscalar (an axion-like particle), together with a very massive fermion which has Lorentz-violating interactions with the photon and the pseudoscalar, including a nonminimal Lorentz-violating coupling. We investigate the low energy effective action for this model, after integration over the fermion field, and show that interesting results are obtained, such as the generation of a correction to the standard coupling between the axion-like particle and the photon, as well as Lorentz-violating effects in the interaction energy involving electroma…
Axion and axion-like particle models are typically affected by a strong fine-tuning problem in conceiving the electroweak and the Peccei-Quinn breaking scales. Within the context of the Minimal Linear σ Model, axion-like particle constructions are identified where this hierarchy problem is solved, accounting for a TeV Peccei-Quinn breaking scale and a pseudoscalar particle with a mass larger than 10 MeV. Potential signatures at colliders and B-factories are discussed.
We solve the general problem of mixing of electromagnetic and scalar or pseudoscalar fields coupled by axion-type interactions ${\cal L}_{int} =g_ϕ ϕε_{μν\a \b}F^{μν}F^{\a \b} $. The problem depends on several dimensionful scales, including the magnitude and direction of background magnetic field, the pseudoscalar mass, plasma frequency, propagation frequency, wave number, and finally the pseudoscalar coupling. We apply the results to the first consistent calculations of the mixing of light propagating in a background magnetic field of varying direction, which shows a great variety of fascinat…
We construct a new model of four-dimensional relativistic strings with integrable dynamics on the worldsheet. In addition to translational modes this model contains a single massless pseudoscalar worldsheet field - the worldsheet axion. The axion couples to a topological density which counts the self-intersection number of a string. The corresponding coupling is fixed by integrability to $Q=\sqrt{7\over 16π}\approx 0.37$. We argue that this model is a member of a larger family of relativistic non-critical integrable string models. This family includes and extends conventional non-critical stri…
We consider the minimal coupling of two photons to neutral scalar and pseudoscalar fields, as for instance in the case of the Higgs boson and axion, respectively. In this framework, we analyze the photon dispersion relations in the presence of static and homogeneous external magnetic and electric fields, by taking into account the contribution of the imaginary part of the scalar/pseudoscalar self-energy. We show that this contribution cannot be neglected when it is of the same order as the photon-scalar/pseudoscalar mixing term. In addition to the usual light-like photon propagation mode, with…
We derive new constraints on the coupling of heavy pseudoscalar (axion-like) particles to photons, based on the gamma ray flux expected from the decay of these particles into photons. After being produced in the supernova core, these heavy axion-like particles would escape and a fraction of them would decay into photons before reaching the Earth. We have calculated the expected flux on Earth of these photons from the supernovae SN 1987A and Cassiopeia A and compared our results to data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. This analysis provides strong constraints on the parameter space for axi…
We propose a fixed-target experiment to search for Axion-like particles (ALPs) coupling to photons, which utilizes electron and positron beams available at KEK Linac. The sensitivity to ALP is evaluated for two shielding setups in conjunction with other beam dump experiments, fixed-target experiments, and $e^+e^-$ collider experiments. This study shows that the two setups can explore the gap between the search region excluded by the beam dump experiments and the $e^+e^-$ collider experiments.
We discuss here a specific field-theory model, inspired from string theory, in which the generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Cosmos is due to the propagation of fermions in a non-trivial, spherically asymmetric (and hence Lorentz violating) gravitational background that may characterise the epochs of the early universe. The background induces different dispersion relations, hence populations, between fermions and antifermions, and thus CPT Violation (CPTV) already in thermal equilibrium. Species populations may freeze out leading to leptogenesis and baryogenesis. More specifical…
We present a brief overview of a new generation of high-precision laboratory and astrophysical measurements to search for ultralight (sub-eV) axion, axion-like pseudoscalar and scalar dark matter, which form either a coherent condensate or topological defects (solitons). In these new detection methods, the sought effects are linear in the interaction constant between dark matter and ordinary matter, which is in stark contrast to traditional searches for dark matter, where the sought effects are quadratic or higher order in the underlying interaction constants (which are extremely small).
Axion like particles (ALPs) are quite generic in many scenarios for physics beyond the Standard Model, they are pseudoscalar Nambu-Goldstone bosons, and appear once any global $U(1)$ symmetry is broken spontaneously. The ALPs can gain mass from various non-perturbative quantum effects, such as anomalies or instantons. ALPs can couple to the matter sector incluidng a scalar condensate such as inflaton or moduli field via derivative interactions, which are suppressed by the axion {\it decay constant}, $f_χ$ . Although weakly interacting, the ALPs can be produced abundantly from the coherent osci…
