Heat and mass transport is generally closely correlated to momentum transport in shear flows. This so-called Reynolds analogy between advective heat or mass transport and momentum transport hinders efficiency improvements in engineering heat and mass transfer applications. I show through direct numerical simulations that in plane Couette and Taylor-Couette flow rotation can strongly influence wall-to-wall passive tracer transport and make it much faster than momentum transport, clearly in violation of the Reynolds analogy. This difference between passive tracer transport, representative of heat/mass transport, and momentum transport is observed in steady flows with large counter-rotating vortices at low Reynolds numbers as well as in fully turbulent flows at higher Reynolds numbers. It is especially large near the neutral (Rayleigh's) stability limit. The rotation-induced Coriolis force strongly damps the streamwise/azimuthal velocity fluctuations when this limit is approached while tracer fluctuations are much less affected. Accordingly, momentum transport is much more reduced than tracer transport, showing that the Coriolis force breaks the Reynolds analogy. At higher Reynolds numbers this strong advective transport dissimilarity is accompanied by approximate limit cycle dynamics with intense low-frequency bursts of turbulence when approaching the neutral stability limit. The study demonstrates that simple body forces can cause clear dissimilarities between heat/mass and momentum transport in shear flows.
The transition to turbulence in Taylor-Couette flow often occurs via a sequence of supercritical bifurcations to progressively more complex, yet stable, flows. We describe a subcritical laminar-turbulent transition in the counter-rotating regime mediated by an unstable intermediate state in a system with an axial aspect ratio of $Γ=5.26$ and a radius ratio of $η=0.905$. In this regime, flow visualization experiments and numerical simulations indicate the intermediate state corresponds to an aperiodic flow featuring interpenetrating spirals. Furthermore, the reverse transition out of turbulence…
We examine the effectiveness of the Generalised Quasilinear (GQL) Approximation introduced by Marston et al (2016). This approximation splits the variables into large and small scales in directions where there is a translational symmetry and removes nonlinear interactions involving only small scales. We utilise as a paradigm problem three-dimensional, turbulent, rotating Couette flow. We compare the results obtained from Direct Numerical Solution of the equations with those from Quasilinear (QL) and GQL calculations. In this three-dimensional setting, there is a choice of cut-off wavenumber fo…
Direct numerical simulations of turbulent non-rotating and rotating Plane Couette Flow with a periodically modulated plate velocity are conducted to study the effect of modulated forcing on turbulent shear flows. The time averaged shear Reynolds number is fixed to $Re_S = 3 \cdot 10^4$, which results in a frictional Reynolds number of approximately $Re_τ\approx 400$. The modulating frequency is varied in the range $Wo\in(20,200)$, while the modulating amplitude is kept fixed at $10\%$ of the shear velocity except to demonstrate that varying this parameter changes little. The resulting shear at…
We investigate the local self-sustained process underlying spiral turbulence in counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow using a periodic annular domain, shaped as a parallelogram, two of whose sides are aligned with the cylindrical helix described by the spiral pattern. The primary focus of the study is placed on the emergence of drifting-rotating waves ({\sc drw}) that capture, in a relatively small domain, the main features of coherent structures typically observed in developed turbulence. The transitional dynamics of the subcritical region, far below the first instability of the laminar circul…
A new turbulent Taylor-Couette system consisting of two independently rotating cylinders has been constructed. The gap between the cylinders has a height of 0.927 m, an inner radius of 0.200 m, and a variable outer radius (from 0.279 to 0.220 m). The maximum angular rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinder are 20 and 10 Hz, respectively, resulting in Reynolds numbers up to 3.4 x 10^6 with water as working fluid. With this Taylor-Couette system, the parameter space (Re_i, Re_o, η) extends to (2.0 x 10^6, {\pm}1.4 x 10^6, 0.716-0.909). The system is equipped with bubble injectors, temperat…
The distribution of energy loss due to viscosity friction in plane Couette flow and Taylor-Couette Flow between concentric rotating cylinders are studied in detail for various flow conditions. The energy loss is related to the industrial processes in some fluid delivery devices and has significant influence on the flow efficiency, flow stability, turbulent transition, mixing, and heat transfer behaviours, etc. Therefore, it is important to know about the energy loss distribution in the flow domain and to know its influence on the flow for better understanding of the flow physics. The calculati…
We study the stability of the Couette-Taylor flow between porous cylinders with radial throughflow. It had been shown earlier that this flow can be unstable with respect to non-axisymmetric (azimuthal or helical) waves provided that the radial Reynolds number, $R$ (constructed using the radial velocity at the inner cylinder and its radius), is high. In this paper, we present a very detailed and, in many respects, novel chart of critical curves in a region of moderate values of $R$, and we show that, starting from values of $R$, as low as $10$, the critical modes inherited from the inviscid ins…
Rotating waves (RW) bifurcating from the axisymmetric basic magnetized spherical Couette (MSC) flow are computed by means of Newton-Krylov continuation techniques for periodic orbits. In addition, their stability is analysed in the framework of Floquet theory. The inner sphere rotates whilst the outer is kept at rest and the fluid is subjected to an axial magnetic field. For a moderate Reynolds number ${\rm Re}=10^3$ (measuring inner rotation) the effect of increasing the magnetic field strength (measured by the Hartmann number ${\rm Ha}$) is addressed in the range ${\rm Ha}\in(0,80)$ correspo…
We numerically compute axisymmetric Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of axially periodic magnetic fields, with Hartmann numbers up to $Ha^2=10^7$. The geometry of the field singles out special field lines on which Shercliff layers form. These are simple shear layers for insulating boundaries, versus super-rotating or counter-rotating layers for conducting boundaries. Some field configurations have previously studied spherical analogs, but fundamentally new configurations also exist, having no spherical analogs. Finally, we explore the influence of azimuthal fields $B_ϕ\sim r^{-1}{\bf\hat e}…
The symmetries of flow structures are often prescribed by their mechanical instability and geometry. Here, as an example, we present the homotopy of the rotating 3-fold spiral state that is robust in a spherical Couette flow towards the hybrid system with a thermal stratification effect. It has not yet been confirmed that the rotating wave state smoothly connects to the thermal stratification system. Through continuation, the most dangerous mode at a purely spherical Couette flow of $m=4$ modes of spherical harmonics is replaced by $l=4$ and $m=3$ in a purely thermal convective system. For the…
We conduct magnetic spherical Couette (MSC) flow experiments in the return flow instability regime with GaInSn as the working fluid, and the ratio of the inner to the outer sphere radii $r_{\rm i}/r_{\rm o} = 0.5$, the Reynolds number ${\rm Re} = 1000$, and the Hartmann number ${\rm Ha} \in [27.5,40]$. Rotating waves with different azimuthal wavenumbers $m \in \{2, 3, 4\}$ manifest in certain ranges of ${\rm Ha}$ in the experiments, depending on whether the values of ${\rm Ha}$ were fixed or varied from different initial values. These observations demonstrate the multistability of rotating wav…
Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) and Taylor-Couette Flow (TCF) are two paradigmatic fluid dynamical systems frequently discussed together because of their many similarities despite their different geometries and forcing. Often these analogies require approximations, but in the limit of large radii where TCF becomes rotating plane Couette flow (RPC) exact relations can be established. When the flows are restricted to two spatial degrees of freedom there is an exact specification that maps the three velocity components in RPC to the two velocity components and one temperature field in RBC. Using…
We study the nonlinear mode competition of various spiral instabilities in magnetised Taylor-Couette flow. The resulting finite-amplitude mixed-mode solution branches are tracked using the annular-parallelogram periodic domain approach developed by Deguchi & Altmeyer (2013). Mode competition phenomena are studied in both the anti-cyclonic and cyclonic Rayleigh-stable regimes. In the anti-cyclonic sub-rotation regime, with the inner cylinder rotating faster than the outer, Hollerbach, Teeluck & Rudiger (2010) found competing axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric magneto-rotational linearly unstable…
A counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow with relatively small radius ratios of $η$ = 0.2--0.5 was investigated over a wide range of the Reynolds number, from laminar to turbulent regime, by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We investigated the $η$ dependence of the flow structure and determined a critical value between $η$ = 0.2 and 0.3, below which, the stable outer cylinder side exhibited a modal structure that was different from the Taylor-vortex flow on the inner side. At $η\geq$ 0.3, the Taylor-vortex on the unstable inner side dominated the entire flow field between…
The energy gradient theory is used to study the instability of Taylor-Couette flow between concentric rotating cylinders. This theory has been proposed in our previous works. In our previous studies, the energy gradient theory was demonstrated to be applicable for wall-bounded parallel flows. It was found that the critical value of the energy gradient parameter Kmax at turbulent transition is about 370-389 for wall-bounded parallel flows (which include plane Poiseuille flow, pipe Poiseuille flow and plane Couette flow) below which no turbulence occurs. In this paper, the detailed derivation fo…
The statistics of velocity fluctuations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are examined. The rotation rate of the inner and outer cylinder are varied while keeping the Taylor number fixed to $1.49 \times 10^{12}$ ($\mathcal{O}(\text{Re})=10^6$). The azimuthal velocity component of the flow is measured using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). For each experiment $5\times10^6$ datapoints are acquired and carefully analysed. Using extended self-similarity (ESS) \cite{ben93b} the longitudinal structure function exponents are extracted, and are found to weakly depend on the ratio of the rotation rates. …
In an earlier paper we showed that the combination of azimuthal magnetic fields and super-rotation in Taylor-Couette flows of conducting fluids can be unstable against non-axisymmetric perturbations if the magnetic Prandtl number of the fluid is $Pm\neq 1$. Here we demonstrate that the addition of a weak axial field component may allow axisymmetric perturbation patterns for $Pm$ of order unity depending on the boundary conditions. The axisymmetric modes only occur for magnetic Mach numbers (of the azimuthal field) of order unity, while higher values are necessary for non-axisymmetric modes. Th…
The existence of triadic resonances in the magnetized spherical Couette system (MSC) is related to the development of modulated rotating waves, which are quasiperiodic flows understood in terms of bifurcation theory in systems with symmetry. In contrast to previous studies in spherical geometry the resonant modes are not inertial waves but related with the radial jet instability which is strongly equatorially antisymmetric. We propose a general framework in which triadic resonances are generated through successive Hopf bifurcations from the base state. The study relies on an accurate frequency…
We explore the effect of forcing on the linear shear flow or plane Couette flow, which is also the background flow in the very small region of the Keplerian accretion disk. We show that depending on the strength of forcing and boundary conditions suitable for the systems under consideration, the background plane shear flow and, hence, accretion disk velocity profile modifies to parabolic flow, which is plane Poiseuille flow or Couette-Poiseuille flow, depending on the frame of reference. In the presence of rotation, plane Poiseuille flow becomes unstable at a smaller Reynolds number under pure…
We present a study devoted to a detailed description of modulated rotating waves (MRW) in the magnetized spherical Couette system. The set-up consists of a liquid metal confined between two differentially rotating spheres and subjected to an axially applied magnetic field. When the magnetic field strength is varied, several branches of MRW are obtained by means of three dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS). The MRW originate from parent branches of rotating waves (RW) and are classified according to Rand's (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal 79:1-37, 182) and Coughling & Marcus (J. Fluid Mech.…
We perform direct numerical simulations of rotating turbulent Waleffe flow, the flow between two parallel plates with a sinusoidal streamwise shear driving force, to study the formation of large-scale structures and the mechanisms for momentum transport. We simulate different cyclonic and anti-cyclonic rotations in the range of dimensionless rotation numbers (inverse Rossby numbers) $R_Ω$ $\in$ $[-0.16, 2.21]$, and fix the Reynolds number to $Re=3.16\times 10^3$, large enough such that the shear transport is almost entirely due to Reynolds stresses and viscous transport is negligible. We find …
A new Taylor-Couette system has been designed and constructed with precise temperature control. Two concentric independently rotating cylinders are able to rotate at maximum rates of $f_i = \pm20$ Hz for the inner cylinder and $f_o = \pm10$ Hz for the outer cylinder. The inner cylinder has an outside radius of $r_i = 75$ mm, and the outer cylinder has an inside radius of $r_o = 105$ mm, resulting in a gap of $d=30$ mm. The height of the gap $L =549$ mm, giving a volume of $V=9.3$l. The geometric parameters are $η= r_i/r_o = 0.714$ and $Γ= L/d = 18.3$. With water as working fluid at room temper…
A number of time-periodic flows have been found to have a property called RZIF: when a linear stability analysis is carried out about the temporal mean (rather than the usual steady state), an eigenvalue is obtained whose Real part is Zero and whose Imaginary part is the nonlinear Frequency. For two-dimensional thermosolutal convection, a Hopf bifurcation leads to traveling waves which satisfy the RZIF property and standing waves which do not. We have investigated this property numerically for counter-rotating Couette-Taylor flow, in which a Hopf bifurcation gives rise to branches of upwards a…
We present a derivation that begins with the Navier--Stokes equation and ends with a prediction of multiple statistically stable states identical to those observed in a spanwise rotating plane Couette flow. This derivation is able to explain the presence of multiple states in fully developed turbulence and the selection of one state over the other by differently sized computational domains and different initial conditions. According to the present derivation, two and only two statistically stable states are possible in an infinitely large plane Couette flow with spanwise rotation, and that mul…
This paper provides a prescription for the turbulent viscosity in rotating shear flows for use e.g. in geophysical and astrophysical contexts. This prescription is the result of the detailed analysis of the experimental data obtained in several studies of the transition to turbulence and turbulent transport in Taylor-Couette flow. We first introduce a new set of control parameters, based on dynamical rather than geometrical considerations, so that the analysis applies more naturally to rotating shear flows in general and not only to Taylor-Couette flow. We then investigate the transition thres…
Direct numerical simulations of Taylor-Couette flow (TC). Shear Reynolds numbers of up to $3\cdot10^5$, corresponding to Taylor numbers of $Ta=4.6\cdot10^{10}$, were reached. Effective scaling laws for the torque are presented. The transition to the ultimate regime, in which asymptotic scaling laws (with logarithmic corrections) for the torque are expected to hold up to arbitrarily high driving, is analysed for different radius ratios $η$, different aspect ratios $Γ$ and different rotation ratios $Ro$. It is shown that the transition is approximately independent of $Ro$ and $Γ$, but depends si…
Recent work suggests unstable recurrent solutions of the equations governing fluid flow can play an important role in structuring the dynamics of turbulence. Here we present a method for detecting intervals of time where turbulence "shadows" (spatially and temporally mimics) recurrent solutions. We find that shadowing occurs frequently and repeatedly in both numerical and experimental observations of counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow, despite the relatively small number of known recurrent solutions in this system. Our results set the stage for experimentally-grounded dynamical descriptions …
Turbulent Taylor-Couette flow between counter-rotating cylinders develops intermittently fluctuating boundary layers for sufficient counter-rotation. We demonstrate the phenomenon in direct numerical simulations for radius ratios η=0.5 and 0.71 and propose a theoretical model for the critical value in the rotation ratio. Numerical results as well as experiments show that the onset of this intermittency coincides with the maximum in torque. The variations in torque correlate with the variations in mean Taylor vortex flow which is first enhanced for weak counter-rotation, and then reduced as int…
The nonaxisymmetric azimuthal magnetorotational instability is studied for hydromagnetic Taylor-Couette flows between cylinders of finite electrical conductivity. We find that the magnetic Prandtl number Pm determines whether perfectly conducting or insulating boundary conditions lead to lower Hartmann numbers for the onset of instability. Regardless of the imposed rotation profile, for small Pm the solutions for perfectly conducting cylinders become unstable for weaker magnetic fields than the solutions for insulating cylinders. The critical Hartmann and Reynolds numbers form monotonic functi…

We experimentally and numerically investigate the angular momentum transport in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow for independently rotating cylinders at a small radius ratio of $η=0.357$ for various shear Reynolds numbers ($4.5\times 10^3 \leq Re_S \leq 1.2 \times 10^5$) and ratios of angular velocities ($-0.5 \leq μ\leq 0.2$). \red{The momentum transport in terms of the pseudo-Nusselt number ${Nu}_ω$ does not show a pure power law scaling with the forcing $Re_S$ and features non-constant effective scaling between $1.3\times 10^4 \leq Re_S \leq 4 \times 10^4$. This transition lies in the classica…
We numerically simulate turbulent Taylor-Couette flow for independently rotating inner and outer cylinders, focusing on the analogy with turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard flow. Reynolds numbers of $Re_i=8\cdot10^3$ and $Re_o=\pm4\cdot10^3$ of the inner and outer cylinders, respectively, are reached, corresponding to Taylor numbers Ta up to $10^8$. Effective scaling laws for the torque and other system responses are found. Recent experiments with the Twente turbulent Taylor-Couette ($T^3C$) setup and with a similar facility in Maryland at very high Reynolds numbers have revealed an optimum transport at…
We present azimuthal velocity profiles measured in a Taylor-Couette apparatus, which has been used as a model of stellar and planetary accretion disks. The apparatus has a cylinder radius ratio of $η= 0.716$, an aspect-ratio of $Γ= 11.74$, and the plates closing the cylinders in the axial direction are attached to the outer cylinder. We investigate angular momentum transport and Ekman pumping in the Rayleigh-stable regime. The regime is linearly stable and is characterized by radially increasing specific angular momentum. We present several Rayleigh-stable profiles for shear Reynolds numbers $…
Shearing and rotational forces in fluids can significantly alter the transport of momentum.A numerical investigation was undertaken to study the role of these forces using plane Couette flow subject to rotation about an axis perpendicular to both wall-normal and streamwise directions. Using a set of progressively higher Reynolds numbers up to Re = 5200, we find that the torque for a given Re is a non-monotonic function of rotation number, Ro. For low-to-moderate turbulent Reynolds numbers we find a maximum that is associated with flow fields that are dominated by downstream vortices and calcul…
In this study, we combine experiments and direct numerical simulations to investigate the effects of the height of transverse ribs at the walls on both global and local flow properties in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow. We create rib roughness by attaching up to 6 axial obstacles to the surfaces of the cylinders over an extensive range of rib heights, up to blockages of 25% of the gap width. In the asymptotic ultimate regime, where the transport is independent of viscosity, we emperically find that the prefactor of the $Nu_ω \propto Ta^{1/2}$ scaling (corresponding to the drag coefficient $C_f(…
Flows between concentric, counter rotating spherical boundaries are under investigation in the gap with size equal to inner sphere radius. Outer sphere rotational rate is fixed, while inner sphere rotational rate has time periodic variations. The amplitudes and frequencies of these variations are small relative to both spheres averaged rotational rates. With amplitude increase transition from initial periodical flow to chaos is occurred. To determine state of the flow time series of azimuthal velocity, taken with laser Doppler anemometry, were used. We demonstrate appearance of flow states in …
Taylor-Couette flow -- the flow between two coaxial co- or counter-rotating cylinders -- is one of the paradigmatic systems in physics of fluids. The (dimensionless) control parameters are the Reynolds numbers of the inner and outer cylinder, the ratio of the cylinder radii, and the aspect ratio. The response of the system is the torque required to retain constant angular velocities, which can be connected to the angular velocity transport through the gap. While the low Reynolds number regime has been very well explored in the '80s and '90s of the last century, in the fully turbulent regime ma…
Taylor-Couette flow is often used as a simplified model for complex rotating flows in the interior of stars and accretion disks. The flow dynamics in these objects is influenced by magnetic fields. For example, quasi-Keplerian flows in Taylor-Couette geometry become unstable to a travelling or standing wave in an external magnetic field if the fluid is conducting; there is an instability even when the flow is hydrodynamically stable. This magnetorotational instability leads to the development of chaotic states and, eventually, turbulence, when the cylinder rotation is sufficiently fast. The tr…
We experimentally study the influence of wall roughness on bubble drag reduction in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow, i.e.\ the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders. We measure the drag in the system for the cases with and without air, and add roughness by installing transverse ribs on either one or both of the cylinders. For the smooth wall case (no ribs) and the case of ribs on the inner cylinder only, we observe strong drag reduction up to $DR=33\%$ and $DR=23\%$, respectively, for a void fraction of $α=6\%$. However, with ribs mounted on both cylinders or on the outer…
Air cavities, i.e. air layers developed behind cavitators, are seen as a promising drag reducing method in the maritime industry. Here we utilize the Taylor-Couette (TC) geometry, i.e. the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders, to study the effect of air cavities in this closed setup, which is well-accessible for drag measurements and optical flow visualizations. We show that stable air cavities can be formed, and that the cavity size increases with Reynolds number and void fraction. The streamwise cavity length strongly depends on the axial position due to buoyancy for…
The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is thought to be a powerful source of turbulence and momentum transport in astrophysical accretion discs, but obtaining observational evidence of its operation is challenging. Recently, laboratory experiments of Taylor--Couette flow with externally imposed axial and azimuthal magnetic fields have revealed the kinematic and dynamic properties of the MRI close to the instability onset. While good agreement was found with linear stability analyses, little is known about the transition to turbulence and transport properties of the MRI. We here report on a nu…
We create a highly controlled lab environment-accessible to both global and local monitoring-to analyse turbulent boiling flows and in particular their shear stress in a statistically stationary state. Namely, by precisely monitoring the drag of strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow (the flow in between two co-axially rotating cylinders, Reynolds number $\textrm{Re}\approx 10^6$) during its transition from non-boiling to boiling, we show that the intuitive expectation, namely that a few volume percent of vapor bubbles would correspondingly change the global drag by a few percent, is wrong. Ra…
We analyze the global transport properties of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow in the strongly turbulent regime for independently rotating outer and inner cylinders, reaching Reynolds numbers of the inner and outer cylinders of Re_i = 2 x 10^6 and Re_o = 1.4 x 10^6, respectively. For all Re_i, Re_o, the dimensionless torque G scales as a function of the Taylor number Ta (which is proportional to the square of the difference between the angular velocities of the inner and outer cylinders) with a universal effective scaling law G \propto Ta^{0.88}, corresponding to Nu_omega \propto Ta^{0.38} for th…
Here we extend the Madelung transformation of the Schrödinger equation into a fluid-like form to include the influence of an external electromagnetic field on a charged particle. The vorticity of the Madelung fluid is then in the opposite direction to the imposed magnetic field and equal in magnitude to the cyclotron angular frequency. When the particle motion is confined to a plane, perpendicular to an imposed magnetic field, the equivalent flow dynamics is that of zero absolute vorticity obtained in a quasi 2D rotating frame, where the cyclotron frequency plays a role equivalent to that of t…
