We present a derivation that begins with the Navier--Stokes equation and ends with a prediction of multiple statistically stable states identical to those observed in a spanwise rotating plane Couette flow. This derivation is able to explain the presence of multiple states in fully developed turbulence and the selection of one state over the other by differently sized computational domains and different initial conditions. According to the present derivation, two and only two statistically stable states are possible in an infinitely large plane Couette flow with spanwise rotation, and that multiple states are not possible at very slow or very rapid rotation speeds. We also show the existence of limit cycles near statistically stable states.
This article presents direct numerical simulations of the growth of turbulent spots in the transitional regime of plane Couette flow. A quantitative description of the growth process and of the detail of the quadrupolar flow around the spot is given. Focus is put on formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks that resembles a secondary shear instability. The main features of the instability (coherence lengths, advection velocity) are studied in the context of the turbulent spot, below and above the threshold Reynolds number of appearance of the oblique turbulent bands of plane Coue…
We consider a 9-PDE (1-space and 1-time) model of plane Couette flow in which the degrees of freedom are severely restricted in the streamwise and cross-stream directions to study spanwise localisation in detail. Of the many steady Eckhaus (spanwise modulational) instabilities identified of global steady states, none lead to a localized state. Localized periodic solutions were found instead which arise in saddle node bifurcations in the Reynolds number. These solutions appear global (domain filling) in narrow (small spanwise) domains yet can be smoothly continued out to fully spanwise-localise…
This article investigates the formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks of the oblique laminar- turbulent bands of plane Couette flow (PCF) by mean of Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The spanwise vorticity is created by a roll-up type development of the streamwise-wall normal shear layer of the velocity streaks. It is advected by the large scale flow along the bands. We propose a criterion on spanwise vorticity which detects these events in order to perform systematic measurements. Beside of the streamwise and spanwise correlation lengths of the rolls, their advection velocit…
Recent research has shed light on the role of coherent structures in forming layers when stably stratified turbulence is forced with horizontal shear (Lucas, Caulfield & Kerswell, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 832, 2017, pp. 409-437). Here we extend our previous work to investigate the effect of rigid boundaries on the dynamics by studying stably-stratified plane Couette flow with gravity oriented in the spanwise direction. We observe near-wall layering and associated new mean flows in the form of large scale spanwise-flattened streamwise rolls. The layers exhibit the expected buoyancy scaling $l_z\sim…
Perturbed plane Couette flow containing a thin spanwise-oriented ribbon undergoes a subcritical bifurcation at Re = 230 to a steady 3D state containing streamwise vortices. This bifurcation is followed by several others giving rise to a fascinating series of stable and unstable steady states of different symmetries and wavelengths. First, the backwards-bifurcating branch reverses direction and becomes stable near Re = 200. Then, the spanwise reflection symmetry is broken, leading to two asymmetric branches which are themselves destabilized at Re = 420. Above this Reynolds number, time evolutio…
Highly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with spanwise-varying roughness is investigated experimentally and numerically (direct numerical simulations (DNS) with an immersed boundary method (IBM)) to determine the effects of the spacing and axial width $s$ of the spanwise varying roughness on the total drag and {on} the flow structures. We apply sandgrain roughness, in the form of alternating {rough and smooth} bands to the inner cylinder. Numerically, the Taylor number is $\mathcal{O}(10^9)$ and the roughness width is varied between $0.47\leq \tilde{s}=s/d \leq 1.23$, where $d$ is the gap width. E…
We investigate the growth in the spanwise direction of turbulent spots invading a laminar flow in a plane Couette flow. Direct Numerical Simulation is used to track the nucleation of streaks during the spot growth. Experiment and direct numerical simulation allow us to study the velocity of the spot fronts and of the vortices observed at the spots' edges. All these results show that two mechanisms are involved when turbulent spots grow: a formerly proposed local growth occurring at the spot spanwise tips but also in comparable proportion a global growth induced by large-scale advection identif…
We present an equilibrium solution of plane Couette flow that is exponentially localized in both the spanwise and streamwise directions. The solution is similar in size and structure to previously computed turbulent spots and localized, chaotically wandering edge states of plane Couette flow. A linear analysis of dominant terms in the Navier-Stokes equations shows how the exponential decay rate and the wall-normal overhang profile of the streamwise tails are governed by the Reynolds number and the dominant spanwise wavenumber. Perturbations of the solution along its leading eigenfunctions caus…
We study the stability of coherent structures in plane Couette flow against long-wavelength perturbations in wide domains that cover several pairs of coherent structures. For one and two pairs of vortices, the states retain the stability properties of the small domains, but for three pairs new unstable modes are found. They are shown to be connected to bifurcations that break the translational symmetry and drive the coherent structures from the spanwise extended state to a modulated one that is a precursor to spanwise localized states. Tracking the stability of the orbits as functions of the s…
This article presents a modelling of the formation of spanwise vorticity in the turbulent streaks of the oblique bands and spots of transitional plane Couette flow. A functional model is designed to mimic the coherent flow in the streaks. The control parameters of the model are extracted from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) statistical data. A Reynolds stress is proposed to study the effect on the instability of this additional force maintaining the baseflow. Local (quasi-parallel) temporal stability analysis is performed on that model to investigate the linear development of the spanwise v…
We report the results of an experimental investigation into the decay of turbulence in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow using 'quench' experiments where the flow laminarises after a sudden reduction in Reynolds number $Re$. Specifically, we study the velocity field in the streamwise-spanwise plane. We show that the spanwise velocity containing rolls, decays faster than the streamwise velocity, which displays elongated regions of higher or lower velocity called streaks. At final Reynolds numbers above 425, the decay of streaks displays two stages: first a slow decay when rolls are present and seco…
Interscale energy transfer in wall turbulence has been intensively studied in recent years, and both the forward (i.e. from larger to smaller scales) and reversed transfers of turbulent energy have been found whereas their corresponding physical phenomena have not been revealed. In the present study, we perform DNS of turbulent plane Couette flow with reduced-size computational domains, where either the streamwise or spanwise domain size is reduced to their minimal lengths, aiming at elucidating the role of scale interactions in each direction. Our computational results with the streamwise-min…
We examine the effectiveness of the Generalised Quasilinear (GQL) Approximation introduced by Marston et al (2016). This approximation splits the variables into large and small scales in directions where there is a translational symmetry and removes nonlinear interactions involving only small scales. We utilise as a paradigm problem three-dimensional, turbulent, rotating Couette flow. We compare the results obtained from Direct Numerical Solution of the equations with those from Quasilinear (QL) and GQL calculations. In this three-dimensional setting, there is a choice of cut-off wavenumber fo…
Recent progress indicates that highly symmetric recurring solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, such as equilibria and periodic orbits, provide a skeleton for turbulence dynamics in state-space. Many of these solutions have been found for flat-walled plane Couette, channel, and pipe flows. Rough-walled flows are of great practical significance, yet no recurring solutions are known for these flows. We present a numerical homotopy method to continue solutions from flat-walled plane Couette flow (PCF) to grooved PCF, demonstrated here at a Reynolds number of 400, to act as a starting point fo…
Plane Couette flow perturbed by a spanwise oriented ribbon, similar to a configuration investigated experimentally at the Centre d'Etudes de Saclay, is investigated numerically using a spectral-element code. 2D steady states are computed for the perturbed configuration; these differ from the unperturbed flows mainly by a region of counter-circulation surrounding the ribbon. The 2D steady flow loses stability to 3D eigenmodes at Re = 230, beta = 1.3 for rho = 0.086 and Re = 550, beta = 1.5 for rho = 0.043, where Re is the Reynolds number, beta is the spanwise wavenumber and rho is the half-heig…
In order to obtain insights into dynamics of developed plane Couette turbulence, this paper considers bifurcation structure of unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) in the large-eddy-simulation (LES) system with the Smagorinsky-type eddy viscosity model. Treating the Smagorinsky constant as a bifurcation parameter, we detect the bifurcation points connecting two known UPOs which were separately discovered in the Navier--Stokes system [G. Kawahara and S. Kida, J. Fluid Mech., 449, 291--300 (2001)]. At the moderately high Reynolds number, the LES UPO of the present study possesses the spanwise vortice…
An analysis of the statistics of the non-linear terms in resolvent analysis is performed in this work for turbulent Couette flow at low Reynolds number. Data from a direct numerical simulation of a minimal flow unit, at Reynolds number 400, is post-processed using Fourier analysis in both time and space, leading to the covariance matrix of the velocity. From the same data, we computed the non-linear terms of the Navier-Stokes equations (treated as forcing in the present formulation), which allowed us to compute the covariance matrix of the forcing for this case. The two covariances are related…
A sequence of three steady - oscillatory transitions of buoyancy convection of air in a laterally heated cube with perfectly thermally insulated horizontal and spanwise boundaries is studied. The problem is treated by Newton and Arnoldi methods based on Krylov subspace iteration. The finite volume grid is gradually refined from 100^3 to 256^3 finite volumes. It is shown that the primary instability is characterized by two competing eigenmodes, whose temporal development results in two different oscillatory states that differ by their symmetries. Bifurcations due to both modes are subcritical. …
We study the turbulence transition of plane Couette flow in large domains where localised perturbations are observed to generate growing turbulent spots. Extending previous studies on the boundary between laminar and turbulent dynamics we determine invariant structures intermediate between laminar and turbulent flow. In wide but short domains we find states that are localised in spanwise direction, and in wide and long domains the states are also localised in downstream direction. These localised states act as critical nuclei for the transition to turbulence in spatially extended domains.
We study the input-output response of a streamwise constant projection of the Navier-Stokes equations for plane Couette flow, the so-called 2D/3C model. Study of a streamwise constant model is motivated by numerical and experimental observations that suggest the prevalence and importance of streamwise and quasi-streamwise elongated structures. Periodic spanwise/wall-normal (z-y) plane stream functions are used as input to develop a forced 2D/3C streamwise velocity field that is qualitatively similar to a fully turbulent spatial field of DNS data. The input-output response associated with the 2…
We present ten new equilibrium solutions to plane Couette flow in small periodic cells at low Reynolds number (Re) and two new traveling-wave solutions. The solutions are continued under changes of Re and spanwise period. We provide a partial classification of the isotropy groups of plane Couette flow and show which kinds of solutions are allowed by each isotropy group. We find two complementary visualizations particularly revealing. Suitably chosen sections of their 3D-physical space velocity fields are helpful in developing physical intuition about coherent structures observed in low Re turb…
We track the secondary bifurcations of coherent states in plane Couette flow and show that they undergo an incomplete periodic doubling cascade that ends with a crisis bifurcation. We introduce a symbolic dynamics for the orbits and show that the ones that exist fall into the universal sequence described by Metropolis, Stein and Stein for unimodal maps. The periodic orbits cover much of the turbulent dynamics in that their temporal evolution overlaps with turbulent motions when projected onto a plane spanned by energy production and dissipation.
Considering structure functions of the streamwise velocity component in a framework akin to the extended self-similarity hypothesis (ESS), de Silva \textit{et al.} (\textit{J. Fluid Mech.}, vol. 823,2017, pp. 498-510) observed that remarkably the \textit{large-scale} (energy-containing range) statistics in canonical wall bounded flows exhibit universal behaviour. In the present study, we extend this universality, which was seen to encompass also flows at moderate Reynolds number, to Taylor-Couette flow. In doing so, we find that also the transversal structure function of the spanwise velocity …
The phenomenon of bursting, in which streaks in turbulent boundary layers oscillate and then eject low speed fluid away from the wall, has been studied experimentally, theoretically, and computationally for more than 50 years because of its importance to the three-dimensional structure of turbulent boundary layers. We produce five new three-dimensional solutions of turbulent plane Couette flow, one of which is periodic while four others are relative periodic. Each of these five solutions demonstrates the break-up and re-formation of near-wall coherent structures. Four of our solutions are peri…
We present a detailed study of the linear stability of plane Couette-Poiseuille flow in the presence of a cross-flow. The base flow is characterised by the cross flow Reynolds number, $R_{inj}$ and the dimensionless wall velocity, $k$. Squire's transformation may be applied to the linear stability equations and we therefore consider 2D (spanwise-independent) perturbations. Corresponding to each dimensionless wall velocity, $k\in[0,1]$, two ranges of $R_{inj}$ exist where unconditional stability is observed. In the lower range of $R_{inj}$, for modest $k$ we have a stabilisation of long wavelen…
This study numerically investigates the bifurcation aspect of the wide-gap spherical Couette flow (SCF), with an emphasis on the competition among polygonal coherence with different wave numbers observed over transitional Reynolds numbers. Focusing on a representative case, the half-radius ratio, we confirm that the axisymmetric state becomes unstable over the first transitional Reynolds number at which the 4-fold spiral state bifurcates, using the continuation method based on the Newton-Raphson algorithm. The Galerkin-spectral method was employed to numerically solve the governing equations. …
New equilibrium solution branches for plane Couette flow are reported which add to the inventory of known solution branches. The exact solutions are found by projecting known equilibria onto the resolvent modes of McKeon & Sharma (J. Fl. Mech., vol. 658, 2010, pp. 336-382) to generate approximate solutions that are subsequently used as seeds in a Newton-Krylov-hookstep search. Searches initialised with these projections have a convergence rate of 96%, leading to the discovery of 16 new equilibria. The low-dimensional nature of the resulting equilibria is attributed to the projection generated …
A specific family of spanwise-localised invariant solutions of plane Couette flow exhibits homoclinic snaking, a process by which spatially localised invariant solutions of a nonlinear partial differential equation smoothly grow additional structure at their fronts while undergoing a sequence of saddle-node bifurcations. Homoclinic snaking is well understood in the context of simpler pattern forming systems such as the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation with cubic-quintic nonlinearity, whose solutions remarkably well resemble the snaking solutions of plane Couette flow. We study the stru…
We numerically compute the flow induced in a spherical shell by fixing the outer sphere and rotating the inner one. The aspect ratio $ε=(r_o-r_i)/r_i$ is set at 0.04 and 0.02, and in each case the Reynolds number measuring the inner sphere's rotation rate is increased to $\sim10\%$ beyond the first bifurcation from the basic state flow. For $ε=0.04$ the initial bifurcations are the same as in previous numerical work at $ε=0.154$, and result in steady one- and two-vortex states. Further bifurcations yield travelling wave solutions similar to previous analytic results valid in the $ε\to0$ limit.…
We study the inertial migration of a torque-free neutrally buoyant sphere in wall-bounded plane Couette flow over a wide range of channel Reynolds numbers, $Re_c$, in the limit of small particle Reynolds number\,($Re_p\ll1$) and confinement ratio\,($λ\ll1$). Here, $Re_c = V_\text{wall}H/ν$ where $H$ denotes the separation between the channel walls, $V_\text{wall}$ denotes the speed of the moving wall, and $ν$ is the kinematic viscosity of the Newtonian suspending fluid; $λ= a/H$, $a$ being the sphere radius, with $Re_p=λ^2 Re_c$. The channel centerline is found to be the only (stable)\,equilib…
This work employs for the first time invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations to study the interaction between finite-size particles and near-wall coherent structures. We consider horizontal plane Couette flow and focus on Nagata's upper-branch equilibrium solution (Nagata, 1990) at low Reynolds numbers where this solution is linearly stable. When adding a single heavy particle with a diameter equivalent to 2.5 wall units, we observe that the solution remains stable and is essentially unchanged away from the particle. This result demonstrates that it is technically feasible to utiliz…
We study the nonlinear stability of plane Couette and Poiseuille flows with the Lyapunov second method by using the classical L2-energy. We prove that the streamwise perturbations are L2-energy stable for any Reynolds number. This contradicts the results of Joseph [10], Joseph and Carmi [12] and Busse [4], and allows us to prove that the critical nonlinear Reynolds numbers are obtained along two-dimensional perturbations, the spanwise perturbations, as Orr [16] had supposed. This conclusion combined with recent results by Falsaperla et al. [8] on the stability with respect to tilted rolls, pro…
The linear amplification mechanisms leading to streamwise-constant large-scale structures in laminar and turbulent channel flows are considered. A key feature of the analysis is that the Orr--Sommerfeld and Squire operators are each considered separately. Physically this corresponds to considering two separate processes: (i) the response of wall-normal velocity fluctuations to external forcing; and (ii) the response of streamwise velocity fluctuations to wall-normal velocity fluctuations. In this way we exploit the fact that, for streamwise-constant fluctuations, the dynamics governing the wal…
This article aims to make a detailed analysis of co-flowing plane Couette flows. Particularly, the variation of flow quantities from the turbulent to non-turbulent region is studied. While the enstrophy exhibits a sharp jump, the other quantities (e.g., mean velocity, Reynolds normal stress, and kinetic energy) show a continuous variation across the interface. The budget analysis of Reynolds normal stresses reveals that the terms playing a key role in turbulence transportation vary depending on the Reynolds normal stress under study. The terms production, diffusion, and redistribution play an …
We calculate the mean electromotive force in plane Couette flows of a nonrotating conducting fluid under the influence of a large-scale magnetic field for driven turbulence. A vertical stratification of the turbulence intensity results in an alpha effect owing to the presence of horizontal shear. Here we discuss the possibility of an experimental determination of the components of the alpha tensor using both quasilinear theory and nonlinear numerical simulations. For magnetic Prandtl numbers of the order of unity, we find that in the high-conductivity limit the alpha effect in the direction of…
The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is thought to be a powerful source of turbulence and momentum transport in astrophysical accretion discs, but obtaining observational evidence of its operation is challenging. Recently, laboratory experiments of Taylor--Couette flow with externally imposed axial and azimuthal magnetic fields have revealed the kinematic and dynamic properties of the MRI close to the instability onset. While good agreement was found with linear stability analyses, little is known about the transition to turbulence and transport properties of the MRI. We here report on a nu…
The decay of Taylor-Couette turbulence, i.e~the flow between two coaxial and independently rotating cylinders, is numerically studied by instantaneously stopping the forcing from an initially statistically stationary flow field at a Reynolds number of $Re=3.5\times 10^4$. The effect of wall-friction is analysed by comparing three separate cases, in which the cylinders are either suddenly made no-slip or stress-free. Different life stages are observed during the decay. In the first stage, the decay is dominated by large-scale rolls. Counterintuitively, when these rolls fade away, if the flow in…
New reduced-order models (ROMs) are derived for sinusoidal shear flow (also known as Waleffe flow) and plane Couette flow in small periodic domains. A first derivation for Waleffe flow exploits Fourier modes that form a natural orthonormal basis for the problem. A ROM for such basis is obtained by a Galerkin projection of the Navier-Stokes equation. A large basis was reduced to 12 modes that contribute significantly in maintaining chaotic, turbulent dynamics. A key difference from earlier ROMs is the inclusion of two roll-streak structures, with spanwise wavelengths equal to $L_z$ and $L_z/2$,…
Although the roll/streak structure is ubiquitous in pre-transitional wall-bounded shear flow, this structure is linearly stable if the idealization of laminar flow is made. Lacking an instability, the large transient growth of the roll/streak structure has been invoked to explain its appearance as resulting from chance occurrence in the free-stream turbulence (FST) of perturbations configured to optimally excite it. However, there is an alternative interpretation which is that FST interacts with the roll/streak structure to destabilize it. Statistical state dynamics (SSD) provides analysis met…
In recent years, scale-by-scale energy transport in wall turbulence has been intensively studied, and the complex spatial and interscale transfer of turbulent energy has been investigated. As the enhancement of heat transfer is one of the most important aspects of turbulence from an engineering perspective, it is also important to study how turbulent heat fluxes are transported in space and in scale by nonlinear multi-scale interactions in wall turbulence as well as turbulent energy. In the present study, the spectral transport budgets of turbulent heat fluxes are investigated based on direct …
The occurrence of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) quasiperiodic flows with four fundamental frequencies in differentially rotating spherical geometry is understood in terms of a sequence of bifurcations breaking the azimuthal symmetry of the flow as the applied magnetic field strength is varied. These flows originate from unstable periodic and quasiperiodic states with broken equatorial symmetry but having four-fold azimuthal symmetry. A posterior bifurcation gives rise to two-fold symmetric quasiperiodic states, with three fundamental frequencies, and a further bifurcation to a four-frequency quasi…
When subcritical shear flows transition to turbulence, laminar and turbulent flow often coexists in space, giving rise to turbulent-laminar patterns. Most prominent are regular stripe patterns with large-scale periodicity and oblique orientation. Oblique stripes are a robust phenomenon, observed in experiments and flow simulations, yet their origin remains unclear. We demonstrate the existence of an invariant equilibrium solution of the fully nonlinear 3D Navier-Stokes equations that resembles the oblique pattern of turbulent-laminar stripes in plane Couette flow. We uncover the origin of the …
The existence of triadic resonances in the magnetized spherical Couette system (MSC) is related to the development of modulated rotating waves, which are quasiperiodic flows understood in terms of bifurcation theory in systems with symmetry. In contrast to previous studies in spherical geometry the resonant modes are not inertial waves but related with the radial jet instability which is strongly equatorially antisymmetric. We propose a general framework in which triadic resonances are generated through successive Hopf bifurcations from the base state. The study relies on an accurate frequency…
We discuss what is an optimal velocity field for more heat transfer and less energy dissipation under the constraints of the continuity equation for the velocity and the advection-diffusion equation for temperature in plane Couette flow. The excess of a wall heat flux (or equivalently total scalar dissipation) over total energy dissipation is taken as an objective functional, and by using a variational method the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived, which are solved numerically to obtain the optimal states in the sense of maximisation of the functional. At high Reynolds numbers, the optimal h…

The transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow and several other shear flows is connected with saddle node bifurcations in which fully 3-d, nonlinear solutions, so-called exact coherent states (ECS), to the Navier-Stokes equation appear. As the Reynolds number increases, the states undergo secondary bifurcations and their time-evolution becomes increasingly more complex. Their spatial complexity, in contrast, remains limited so that these states cannot contribute to the spatial complexity and cascade to smaller scales expected for higher Reynolds numbers. We here present families of scalin…
Previous numerical investigations of the stability and bifurcation properties of different nonlinear combination structures of spiral vortices in a counterrotating Taylor-Couette system that were done for fixed axial wavelengths are supplemented by exploring the dependence of the vortex phenomena waves on their wavelength. This yields information about the experimental and numerical accessability of the various bifurcation scenarios. Also backwards bifurcating standing waves with oscillating amplitudes of the constituent traveling waves are found.
Invariant solutions of shear flows have recently been extended from spatially periodic solutions in minimal flow units to spatially localized solutions on extended domains. One set of spanwise-localized solutions of plane Couette flow exhibits homoclinic snaking, a process by which steady-state solutions grow additional structure smoothly at their fronts when continued parametrically. Homoclinic snaking is well understood mathematically in the context of the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation. Consequently, the snaking solutions of plane Couette flow form a promising connection between t…
The transition to turbulence in Taylor-Couette flow often occurs via a sequence of supercritical bifurcations to progressively more complex, yet stable, flows. We describe a subcritical laminar-turbulent transition in the counter-rotating regime mediated by an unstable intermediate state in a system with an axial aspect ratio of $Γ=5.26$ and a radius ratio of $η=0.905$. In this regime, flow visualization experiments and numerical simulations indicate the intermediate state corresponds to an aperiodic flow featuring interpenetrating spirals. Furthermore, the reverse transition out of turbulence…
Nonmodal transient growth studies and estimation of optimal perturbations have been made for the compressible plane Couette flow with three-dimensional disturbances. The maximum amplification of perturbation energy over time, $G_{\max}$, is found to increase with increasing Reynolds number ${\it Re}$, but decreases with increasing Mach number $M$. More specifically, the optimal energy amplification $G_{\rm opt}$ (the supremum of $G_{\max}$ over both the streamwise and spanwise wavenumbers) is maximum in the incompressible limit and decreases monotonically as $M$ increases. The corresponding op…
