Plane Couette flow perturbed by a spanwise oriented ribbon, similar to a configuration investigated experimentally at the Centre d'Etudes de Saclay, is investigated numerically using a spectral-element code. 2D steady states are computed for the perturbed configuration; these differ from the unperturbed flows mainly by a region of counter-circulation surrounding the ribbon. The 2D steady flow loses stability to 3D eigenmodes at Re = 230, beta = 1.3 for rho = 0.086 and Re = 550, beta = 1.5 for rho = 0.043, where Re is the Reynolds number, beta is the spanwise wavenumber and rho is the half-height of the ribbon. For rho = 0.086, the bifurcation is determined to be subcritical by calculating the cubic term in the normal form equation from the timeseries of a single nonlinear simulation; steady 3D flows are found for Re as low as 200. The critical eigenmode and nonlinear 3D states contain streamwise vortices localized near the ribbon, whose streamwise extent increases with Re. All of these results agree well with experimental observations.
Perturbed plane Couette flow containing a thin spanwise-oriented ribbon undergoes a subcritical bifurcation at Re = 230 to a steady 3D state containing streamwise vortices. This bifurcation is followed by several others giving rise to a fascinating series of stable and unstable steady states of different symmetries and wavelengths. First, the backwards-bifurcating branch reverses direction and becomes stable near Re = 200. Then, the spanwise reflection symmetry is broken, leading to two asymmetric branches which are themselves destabilized at Re = 420. Above this Reynolds number, time evolutio…
Equilibrium, traveling wave, and periodic orbit solutions of pipe, channel, and plane Couette flows can now be computed precisely at Reynolds numbers above the onset of turbulence. These invariant solutions capture the complex dynamics of wall-bounded rolls and streaks and provide a framework for understanding low-Reynolds turbulent shear flows as dynamical systems. We present fluid dynamics videos of plane Couette flow illustrating periodic orbits, a close pass of turbulent flow to a periodic orbit, and heteroclinic connections between unstable equilibria.
The Galerkin method is used to derive a realistic model of plane Couette flow in terms of partial differential equations governing the space-time dependence of the amplitude of a few cross-stream modes. Numerical simulations show that it reproduces the globally sub-critical behavior typical of this flow. In particular, the statistics of turbulent transients at decay from turbulent to laminar flow displays striking similarities with experimental findings.
This article presents direct numerical simulations of the growth of turbulent spots in the transitional regime of plane Couette flow. A quantitative description of the growth process and of the detail of the quadrupolar flow around the spot is given. Focus is put on formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks that resembles a secondary shear instability. The main features of the instability (coherence lengths, advection velocity) are studied in the context of the turbulent spot, below and above the threshold Reynolds number of appearance of the oblique turbulent bands of plane Coue…
A specific family of spanwise-localised invariant solutions of plane Couette flow exhibits homoclinic snaking, a process by which spatially localised invariant solutions of a nonlinear partial differential equation smoothly grow additional structure at their fronts while undergoing a sequence of saddle-node bifurcations. Homoclinic snaking is well understood in the context of simpler pattern forming systems such as the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation with cubic-quintic nonlinearity, whose solutions remarkably well resemble the snaking solutions of plane Couette flow. We study the stru…
We track the secondary bifurcations of coherent states in plane Couette flow and show that they undergo an incomplete periodic doubling cascade that ends with a crisis bifurcation. We introduce a symbolic dynamics for the orbits and show that the ones that exist fall into the universal sequence described by Metropolis, Stein and Stein for unimodal maps. The periodic orbits cover much of the turbulent dynamics in that their temporal evolution overlaps with turbulent motions when projected onto a plane spanned by energy production and dissipation.
We present a derivation that begins with the Navier--Stokes equation and ends with a prediction of multiple statistically stable states identical to those observed in a spanwise rotating plane Couette flow. This derivation is able to explain the presence of multiple states in fully developed turbulence and the selection of one state over the other by differently sized computational domains and different initial conditions. According to the present derivation, two and only two statistically stable states are possible in an infinitely large plane Couette flow with spanwise rotation, and that mul…
We experimentally and numerically investigate the temporal aspects of turbulent spots spreading in a plane Couette flow for transitional Reynolds numbers between 300 and 450. Spot growth rate, spot advection rate and large-scale flow intensity are measured as a function of time and Reynolds number. All these quantities show similar dynamics clarifying the role played by large-scale flows in the advection of the turbulent spot. The contributions of each possible growth mechanism: growth induced by large scale advection or growth by destabilization, are discussed for the different stages of the …
We study the turbulence transition of plane Couette flow in large domains where localised perturbations are observed to generate growing turbulent spots. Extending previous studies on the boundary between laminar and turbulent dynamics we determine invariant structures intermediate between laminar and turbulent flow. In wide but short domains we find states that are localised in spanwise direction, and in wide and long domains the states are also localised in downstream direction. These localised states act as critical nuclei for the transition to turbulence in spatially extended domains.
We apply the iterated edge state tracking algorithm to study the boundary between laminar and turbulent dynamics in plane Couette flow at Re=400. Perturbations that are not strong enough to become fully turbulent nor weak enough to relaminarize tend towards a hyperbolic coherent structure in state space, termed the edge state, which seems to be unique up to obvious continuous shift symmetries. The results reported here show that in cases where a fixed point has only one unstable direction, as for the lower branch solution in in plane Couette flow, the iterated edge tracking algorithm converges…
We investigate the growth in the spanwise direction of turbulent spots invading a laminar flow in a plane Couette flow. Direct Numerical Simulation is used to track the nucleation of streaks during the spot growth. Experiment and direct numerical simulation allow us to study the velocity of the spot fronts and of the vortices observed at the spots' edges. All these results show that two mechanisms are involved when turbulent spots grow: a formerly proposed local growth occurring at the spot spanwise tips but also in comparable proportion a global growth induced by large-scale advection identif…
According to a recent theory \cite{Li14}, when the Reynolds number is large, fully developed turbulence is caused by short term unpredictability (rough dependence upon initial data); when the Reynolds number is moderate, often transient turbulence is caused by chaos (long term unpredictability). This article aims at studying chaos in plane Couette flow at moderate Reynolds number. Based upon the work of L. van Veen and G. Kawahara \cite{VK11} on a transversal homoclinic orbit asymptotic to a limit cycle in plane Couette flow, we explore symbolic dynamics and chaos near the homoclinic orbit. Ma…
Plane Couette flow transitions to turbulence for Re~325 even though the laminar solution with a linear profile is linearly stable for all Re (Reynolds number). One starting point for understanding this subcritical transition is the existence of invariant sets in the state space of the Navier Stokes equation, such as upper and lower branch equilibria and periodic and relative periodic solutions, that are quite distinct from the laminar solution. This article reports several heteroclinic connections between such objects and briefly describes a numerical method for locating heteroclinic connectio…
We present ten new equilibrium solutions to plane Couette flow in small periodic cells at low Reynolds number (Re) and two new traveling-wave solutions. The solutions are continued under changes of Re and spanwise period. We provide a partial classification of the isotropy groups of plane Couette flow and show which kinds of solutions are allowed by each isotropy group. We find two complementary visualizations particularly revealing. Suitably chosen sections of their 3D-physical space velocity fields are helpful in developing physical intuition about coherent structures observed in low Re turb…
When subcritical shear flows transition to turbulence, laminar and turbulent flow often coexists in space, giving rise to turbulent-laminar patterns. Most prominent are regular stripe patterns with large-scale periodicity and oblique orientation. Oblique stripes are a robust phenomenon, observed in experiments and flow simulations, yet their origin remains unclear. We demonstrate the existence of an invariant equilibrium solution of the fully nonlinear 3D Navier-Stokes equations that resembles the oblique pattern of turbulent-laminar stripes in plane Couette flow. We uncover the origin of the …
We present an equilibrium solution of plane Couette flow that is exponentially localized in both the spanwise and streamwise directions. The solution is similar in size and structure to previously computed turbulent spots and localized, chaotically wandering edge states of plane Couette flow. A linear analysis of dominant terms in the Navier-Stokes equations shows how the exponential decay rate and the wall-normal overhang profile of the streamwise tails are governed by the Reynolds number and the dominant spanwise wavenumber. Perturbations of the solution along its leading eigenfunctions caus…
Using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in a new experimental plane Couette flow, we investigate the dynamics of turbulent patches invading formerly laminar flows. We evidence experimentally for the first time in this geometry the existence of large scale flows. These flows appear as soon as laminar and turbulent domains coexist. Spectral analysis is used to study the dynamical evolution of these large scales as well as that of the small scales associated with turbulence. We show that large-scale flows grow before turbulent spots develop and we point out the crucial role they play in the growth…
Spatially localized states play an important role in transition to turbulence in shear flows (Kawahara, Uhlmann & van Veen, Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech. 44, 203 (2012)). Despite the fact that some of them are attractors on the separatrix between laminar and turbulent flows, little is known of their dynamics. We investigate here the temporal dynamics of such steady spatially localized solutions in the context of plane Couette flow. These solutions exist on oscillating branches in parameter space. We consider the saddle-nodes of these branches as initial conditions of simulations run with offset Reyno…
New equilibrium solution branches for plane Couette flow are reported which add to the inventory of known solution branches. The exact solutions are found by projecting known equilibria onto the resolvent modes of McKeon & Sharma (J. Fl. Mech., vol. 658, 2010, pp. 336-382) to generate approximate solutions that are subsequently used as seeds in a Newton-Krylov-hookstep search. Searches initialised with these projections have a convergence rate of 96%, leading to the discovery of 16 new equilibria. The low-dimensional nature of the resulting equilibria is attributed to the projection generated …
We show possibility of the Plane Couette (PC) flow instability for Reynolds number Re>Reth=140. This new result of the linear hydrodynamic stability theory is obtained on the base of refusal from the traditionally used assumption on longitudinal periodicity of the disturbances along the direction of the fluid flow. We found that earlier existing understanding on the linear stability of this flow for any arbitrary large Reynolds number is directly related with an assumption on the separation of the variables of the spatial variability for the disturbance field and their periodicity in linear th…
Shearing and rotational forces in fluids can significantly alter the transport of momentum.A numerical investigation was undertaken to study the role of these forces using plane Couette flow subject to rotation about an axis perpendicular to both wall-normal and streamwise directions. Using a set of progressively higher Reynolds numbers up to Re = 5200, we find that the torque for a given Re is a non-monotonic function of rotation number, Ro. For low-to-moderate turbulent Reynolds numbers we find a maximum that is associated with flow fields that are dominated by downstream vortices and calcul…
A turbulent-laminar banded pattern in plane Couette flow is studied numerically. This pattern is statistically steady, is oriented obliquely to the streamwise direction, and has a very large wavelength relative to the gap. The mean flow, averaged in time and in the homogeneous direction, is analysed. The flow in the quasi-laminar region is not the linear Couette profile, but results from a non-trivial balance between advection and diffusion. This force balance yields a first approximation to the relationship between the Reynolds number, angle, and wavelength of the pattern. Remarkably, the var…
Reduced-order models were derived for plane Couette flow using Galerkin projection, with orthonormal basis functions taken as the leading controllability modes of the linearised Navier-Stokes system for a few low wavenumbers. Resulting Galerkin systems comprise ordinary differential equations, with a number of degrees of freedom ranging from 144 to 600, which may be integrated to large times without sign of numerical instability. The reduced-order models so obtained are also found to match statistics of direct numerical simulations at Reynolds number 500 and 1200 with reasonable accuracy, desp…
We study the size of large-scale motions in turbulent plane Couette flows at moderate Reynolds number up to $Re_τ$ = 500. Direct numerical simulation domains were as large as $100πδ\times2δ\times5πδ$, where $δ$ is half the distance between the walls. The results indicate that there are structures with streamwise extent, as measured by the wavelength, as long as 78$δ$ and at least 310$δ$ at $Re_τ$ = 220 and 500, respectively. The presence of these very long structures is apparent in the spectra of all three velocity components and the Reynolds stress. In DNS using a smaller domain, the large st…
In the above paper by Bechtel, Cai, Rooney and Wang, Physics of Fluids, 2004, 16, 3955-3974 six different theories of a Newtonian viscous fluid are investigated and compared, namely, the theory of a compressible Newtonian fluid, and five constitutive limits of this theory: the incompressible theory, the limit where density changes only due to changes in temperature, the limit where density changes only with changes in entropy, the limit where pressure is a function only of temperature, and the limit of pressure a function only of entropy. The six theories are compared through their ability to …
Streamwise and quasi-streamwise elongated structures have been shown to play a significant role in turbulent shear flows. We model the mean behavior of fully turbulent plane Couette flow using a streamwise constant projection of the Navier Stokes equations. This results in a two-dimensional, three velocity component ($2D/3C$) model. We first use a steady state version of the model to demonstrate that its nonlinear coupling provides the mathematical mechanism that shapes the turbulent velocity profile. Simulations of the $2D/3C$ model under small amplitude Gaussian forcing of the cross-stream c…
We consider a 9-PDE (1-space and 1-time) model of plane Couette flow in which the degrees of freedom are severely restricted in the streamwise and cross-stream directions to study spanwise localisation in detail. Of the many steady Eckhaus (spanwise modulational) instabilities identified of global steady states, none lead to a localized state. Localized periodic solutions were found instead which arise in saddle node bifurcations in the Reynolds number. These solutions appear global (domain filling) in narrow (small spanwise) domains yet can be smoothly continued out to fully spanwise-localise…
The problem of two-dimensional steady nonlinear dynamics in plane Couette flow is revisited using homotopy from either plane Poiseuille flow or from plane Couette flow perturbed by a small symmetry-preserving identity operator. Our results show that it is not possible to obtain the nonlinear plane Couette flow solutions reported by Cherhabili and Ehrenstein [Eur. J. Mech. B/Fluids, 14, 667 (1995)] using their Poiseuille-Couette homotopy. We also demonstrate that the steady solutions obtained by Mehta and Healey [Phys. Fluids, 17, 4108 (2005)] for small symmetry-preserving perturbations are inf…
Recent research has shed light on the role of coherent structures in forming layers when stably stratified turbulence is forced with horizontal shear (Lucas, Caulfield & Kerswell, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 832, 2017, pp. 409-437). Here we extend our previous work to investigate the effect of rigid boundaries on the dynamics by studying stably-stratified plane Couette flow with gravity oriented in the spanwise direction. We observe near-wall layering and associated new mean flows in the form of large scale spanwise-flattened streamwise rolls. The layers exhibit the expected buoyancy scaling $l_z\sim…
Plane Couette flow, the flow between two parallel planes moving in opposite directions, is an example of wall-bounded flow experiencing a transition to turbulence with an ordered coexistence of turbulent and laminar domains in some range of Reynolds numbers [R_g,R_t]. When the aspect-ratio is sufficiently large, this coexistence occurs in the form of alternately turbulent and laminar oblique bands. As R goes up trough the upper threshold R_t, the bands disappear progressively to leave room to a uniform regime of featureless turbulence. This continuous transition is studied here by means of und…
We discuss the flow between concentric rotating cylinders in the limit of large radii where the system approaches plane Couette flow. We discuss how in this limit the linear instability that leads to the formation of Taylor vortices is lost and how the character of the transition approaches that of planar shear flows. In particular, a parameter regime is identified where fractal distributions of life times and spatiotemporal intermittency occur. Experiments in this regime should allow to study the characteristics of shear flow turbulence in a closed flow geometry.
The Kleiser-Schumann algorithm has been widely used for the direct numerical simulation of turbulence in rectangular geometries. At the heart of the algorithm is the solution of linear systems which are tridiagonal except for one row. This note shows how to solve the Kleiser-Schumann problem using perfectly triangular matrices. An advantage is the ability to use functions in the LAPACK library. The method is used to simulate turbulence in channel flow at $Re=80,000$ (and $Re_τ=2400$) using $10^{9}$ grid points. An assessment of the length of time necessary to eliminate transient effects in the…
This article investigates the formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks of the oblique laminar- turbulent bands of plane Couette flow (PCF) by mean of Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The spanwise vorticity is created by a roll-up type development of the streamwise-wall normal shear layer of the velocity streaks. It is advected by the large scale flow along the bands. We propose a criterion on spanwise vorticity which detects these events in order to perform systematic measurements. Beside of the streamwise and spanwise correlation lengths of the rolls, their advection velocit…
We present the first simultaneous mapping of two-dimensional, time-dependent velocity and pressure fields in a plane Couette flow pervaded by a transverse magnetic field. While electromagnetic forces are strongest in fluids of high electric conductivity such as liquid metals, their opacity excludes optical optical measurement methods. We circumvent this difficulty using a transparent electrolyte (Sulfuric acid), whose weaker conductivity is offset by higher magnetic fields. We describe an experimental rig based on this idea, where the Couette flow is entrained by a tape immersed in sulfuric ac…
We study the inertial migration of a torque-free neutrally buoyant sphere in wall-bounded plane Couette flow over a wide range of channel Reynolds numbers, $Re_c$, in the limit of small particle Reynolds number\,($Re_p\ll1$) and confinement ratio\,($λ\ll1$). Here, $Re_c = V_\text{wall}H/ν$ where $H$ denotes the separation between the channel walls, $V_\text{wall}$ denotes the speed of the moving wall, and $ν$ is the kinematic viscosity of the Newtonian suspending fluid; $λ= a/H$, $a$ being the sphere radius, with $Re_p=λ^2 Re_c$. The channel centerline is found to be the only (stable)\,equilib…
We demonstrate that a separation of the velocity field in large and small scales according to a streamwise Fourier decomposition identifies subspaces with stable Lyapunov exponents and allows the dynamics to exhibit properties of an inertial manifold, such as the synchronization of the small scales in simulations sharing the same large scales or equivalently the decay of all small scale flow states to the state uniquely determined from the large scale flow. This behaviour occurs for deviations with streamwise wavelength smaller than 130 wall units which was shown in earlier studies to correspo…
Numerical solvers of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have reproduced turbulence phenomena such as the law of the wall, the dependence of turbulence intensities on the Reynolds number, and experimentally observed properties of turbulence energy production. In this article, we begin a sequence of investigations whose eventual aim is to derive and implement numerical solvers that can reach higher Reynolds numbers than is currently possible. Every time step of a Navier-Stokes solver in effect solves a linear boundary value problem. The use of Green's functions leads to numerical solvers…
This paper demonstrates the maintenance of self-sustaining turbulence in a restricted nonlinear (RNL) model of plane Couette flow. The RNL system is derived directly from the Navier Stokes equations and permits computationally tractable studies of the dynamical system obtained using stochastic structural stability theory (S3T), which is a second order approximation of the statistical state dynamics of the flow. The RNL model shares the dynamical restrictions of the S3T model but can be easily implemented through reducing a DNS code to the equations governing the RNL system. Comparisons of turb…
We present the stability analysis of a plane Couette flow which is stably stratified in the vertical direction orthogonally to the horizontal shear. Interest in such a flow comes from geophysical and astrophysical applications where background shear and vertical stable stratification commonly coexist. We perform the linear stability analysis of the flow in a domain which is periodic in the stream-wise and vertical directions and confined in the cross-stream direction. The stability diagram is constructed as a function of the Reynolds number Re and the Froude number Fr, which compares the impor…
We present a new application of Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (LPT): the stability analysis of fluid flows. As a test case that demonstrates the framework we focus on the plane Couette flow. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equation is recast such that the particle position is the fundamental variable, expressed as a function of Lagrangian coordinates. The displacement due to the steady state flow is taken to be the zeroth order solution and the position is formally expanded in terms of a small parameter (generally, the strength of the initial perturbation). The resulting hierarchy of equatio…
The normal-mode analysis of the Reynolds-Orr energy equation governing the stability of viscous motion for general three-dimensional disturbances has been revisited. The energy equation has been solved as an unconstrained minimization problem for the Couette-Poiseuille flow. The minimum Reynolds number for every Couette-Poiseuille velocity profile has been computed and compared with those available in the literature. For fully three-dimensional disturbances, it is shown that the minimum Reynolds number is in general smaller than the corresponding two-dimensional counterpart for all the Couette…
The distribution of energy loss due to viscosity friction in plane Couette flow and Taylor-Couette Flow between concentric rotating cylinders are studied in detail for various flow conditions. The energy loss is related to the industrial processes in some fluid delivery devices and has significant influence on the flow efficiency, flow stability, turbulent transition, mixing, and heat transfer behaviours, etc. Therefore, it is important to know about the energy loss distribution in the flow domain and to know its influence on the flow for better understanding of the flow physics. The calculati…
We discuss what is an optimal velocity field for more heat transfer and less energy dissipation under the constraints of the continuity equation for the velocity and the advection-diffusion equation for temperature in plane Couette flow. The excess of a wall heat flux (or equivalently total scalar dissipation) over total energy dissipation is taken as an objective functional, and by using a variational method the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived, which are solved numerically to obtain the optimal states in the sense of maximisation of the functional. At high Reynolds numbers, the optimal h…
This paper is concerned with the optimal upper bound on mean quantities (torque, dissipation and the Nusselt number) obtained in the framework of the background method for the Taylor--Couette flow with a stationary outer cylinder. Along the way, we perform the energy stability analysis of the laminar flow, and demonstrate that below radius ratio 0.0556, the marginally stable perturbations are not the axisymmetric Taylor vortices but rather a fully three-dimensional flow. The main result of the paper is an analytical expression of the optimal bound as a function of the radius ratio. To obtain t…
Unsteady spatially localized states such as puffs, slugs or spots play an important role in transition to turbulence. In plane Couette flow, steady versions of these states are found on two intertwined solution branches describing homoclinic snaking (Schneider $\textit{et al.}$ 2010a). These branches can be used to generate a number of spatially localized initial conditions whose transition can be investigated. From the low Reynolds numbers where homoclinic snaking is first observed ($Re < 175$) to transitional ones ($Re \approx 325$), these spatially localized states traverse various regimes …
We study the nonlinear stability of plane Couette and Poiseuille flows with the Lyapunov second method by using the classical L2-energy. We prove that the streamwise perturbations are L2-energy stable for any Reynolds number. This contradicts the results of Joseph [10], Joseph and Carmi [12] and Busse [4], and allows us to prove that the critical nonlinear Reynolds numbers are obtained along two-dimensional perturbations, the spanwise perturbations, as Orr [16] had supposed. This conclusion combined with recent results by Falsaperla et al. [8] on the stability with respect to tilted rolls, pro…
Spatially localized exact solutions of plane Couette flow are organized in a snakes-and-ladders structure strikingly similar to that observed for simpler pattern-forming partial differential equations. [PRL 104,104501 (2010)]. We demonstrate the mechanism by which these snaking solutions originate from well-known periodic states of the Taylor-Couette system. They are formed by a localized slug of Wavy-Vortex flow that emerges from a background of Taylor vortices via a modulational sideband instability. This mechanism suggests a deep connection between pattern-formation theory and Navier-Stokes…
We study the input-output response of a streamwise constant projection of the Navier-Stokes equations for plane Couette flow, the so-called 2D/3C model. Study of a streamwise constant model is motivated by numerical and experimental observations that suggest the prevalence and importance of streamwise and quasi-streamwise elongated structures. Periodic spanwise/wall-normal (z-y) plane stream functions are used as input to develop a forced 2D/3C streamwise velocity field that is qualitatively similar to a fully turbulent spatial field of DNS data. The input-output response associated with the 2…
Transient growth due to non-normality is investigated for the Taylor-Couette problem with counter-rotating cylinders as a function of aspect ratio eta and Reynolds number Re. For all Re < 500, transient growth is enhanced by curvature, i.e. is greater for eta < 1 than for eta = 1, the plane Couette limit. For fixed Re < 130 it is found that the greatest transient growth is achieved for eta between the Taylor-Couette linear stability boundary, if it exists, and one, while for Re > 130 the greatest transient growth is achieved for eta on the linear stability boundary. Transient growth is shown t…

In recent years, scale-by-scale energy transport in wall turbulence has been intensively studied, and the complex spatial and interscale transfer of turbulent energy has been investigated. As the enhancement of heat transfer is one of the most important aspects of turbulence from an engineering perspective, it is also important to study how turbulent heat fluxes are transported in space and in scale by nonlinear multi-scale interactions in wall turbulence as well as turbulent energy. In the present study, the spectral transport budgets of turbulent heat fluxes are investigated based on direct …
Nonlinear interaction between different scales in turbulence results in both interscale and spatial transport of turbulent energy, and the role of such scale interactions in turbulent heat transfer mechanism is also of practical importance from the engineering viewpoint. In the present study, we investigate a turbulent plane Couette flow with passive-scalar heat transfer at the Prandtl number 0.71, in order to address the similarity/difference between the scale interactions in the velocity and temperature fields. The constant-temperature-difference boundary condition is used so that the mean v…
