The occurrence of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) quasiperiodic flows with four fundamental frequencies in differentially rotating spherical geometry is understood in terms of a sequence of bifurcations breaking the azimuthal symmetry of the flow as the applied magnetic field strength is varied. These flows originate from unstable periodic and quasiperiodic states with broken equatorial symmetry but having four-fold azimuthal symmetry. A posterior bifurcation gives rise to two-fold symmetric quasiperiodic states, with three fundamental frequencies, and a further bifurcation to a four-frequency quasiperiodic state which has lost all the spatial symmetries. This bifurcation scenario may be favoured when differential rotation is increased and periodic flows with $m$-fold azimuthal symmetry, $m$ being product of several prime numbers, emerge at sufficiently large magnetic field.
The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is thought to be a powerful source of turbulence and momentum transport in astrophysical accretion discs, but obtaining observational evidence of its operation is challenging. Recently, laboratory experiments of Taylor--Couette flow with externally imposed axial and azimuthal magnetic fields have revealed the kinematic and dynamic properties of the MRI close to the instability onset. While good agreement was found with linear stability analyses, little is known about the transition to turbulence and transport properties of the MRI. We here report on a nu…
We present the first simultaneous mapping of two-dimensional, time-dependent velocity and pressure fields in a plane Couette flow pervaded by a transverse magnetic field. While electromagnetic forces are strongest in fluids of high electric conductivity such as liquid metals, their opacity excludes optical optical measurement methods. We circumvent this difficulty using a transparent electrolyte (Sulfuric acid), whose weaker conductivity is offset by higher magnetic fields. We describe an experimental rig based on this idea, where the Couette flow is entrained by a tape immersed in sulfuric ac…
We study the stability of cylindrical Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of azimuthal magnetic fields, and show that one obtains non-axisymmetric magnetorotational instabilities, having azimuthal wavenumber m=1. For Omega_o/Omega_i only slightly greater than the Rayleigh value (r_i/r_o)^2, the critical Reynolds and Hartmann numbers are Re_c ~ 10^3 and Ha_c ~ 10^2, independent of the magnetic Prandtl number Pm. These values are sufficiently small that it should be possible to obtain these instabilities in the PROMISE experimental facility.
In this paper, we experimentally study the influence of large-scale Taylor rolls on the small-scale statistics and the flow organization in fully turbulent Taylor-Couette flow {for Reynolds numbers up to $\text{Re}_S=3\times 10^5$}. The velocity field in the gap confined by coaxial and independently rotating cylinders at a radius ratio of $η=0.714$ is measured using planar {particle image velocimetry} in horizontal planes at different cylinder heights. Flow regions with and without prominent Taylor vortices are compared. We show that the local angular momentum transport (expressed in terms of …
We consider the nonaxisymmetric modes of instability present in Taylor-Couette flow under the application of helical magnetic fields, mainly for magnetic Prandtl numbers close to the inductionless limit, and conduct a full examination of marginal stability in the resulting parameter space. We allow for the azimuthal magnetic field to be generated by a combination of currents in the inner cylinder and fluid itself, and introduce a parameter governing the relation between the strength of these currents. A set of governing eigenvalue equations for the nonaxisymmetric modes of instability are deri…
We present azimuthal velocity profiles measured in a Taylor-Couette apparatus, which has been used as a model of stellar and planetary accretion disks. The apparatus has a cylinder radius ratio of $η= 0.716$, an aspect-ratio of $Γ= 11.74$, and the plates closing the cylinders in the axial direction are attached to the outer cylinder. We investigate angular momentum transport and Ekman pumping in the Rayleigh-stable regime. The regime is linearly stable and is characterized by radially increasing specific angular momentum. We present several Rayleigh-stable profiles for shear Reynolds numbers $…
In search for the cheapest but still reliable numerical simulation, a systematic study on the effect of the computational domain ("box") size on direct numerical simulations of Taylor-Couette flow was performed. Four boxes, with varying azimuthal and axial extents were used. The radius ratio between the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder was fixed to $η=r_i/r_o=0.909$, and the outer was kept stationary, while the inner rotated at a Reynolds number $Re_i=10^5$. Profiles of mean and fluctuation velocities are compared, as well as autocorrelations and velocity spectra. The smallest box is foun…
We provide direct measurements of the boundary layer properties in highly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow up to $\text{Ta}=6.2 \times 10^{12}$ using high-resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV). We find that the mean azimuthal velocity profile at the inner and outer cylinder can be fitted by the von Kármán log law $u^+ = \frac 1κ\ln y^+ +B$. The von Kármán constant $κ$ is found to depend on the driving strength $\text{Ta}$ and for large $\text{Ta}$ asymptotically approaches $κ\approx 0.40$. The variance profiles of the local azimuthal velocity have a universal peak around $y^+ \approx 12$ an…
We conduct magnetic spherical Couette (MSC) flow experiments in the return flow instability regime with GaInSn as the working fluid, and the ratio of the inner to the outer sphere radii $r_{\rm i}/r_{\rm o} = 0.5$, the Reynolds number ${\rm Re} = 1000$, and the Hartmann number ${\rm Ha} \in [27.5,40]$. Rotating waves with different azimuthal wavenumbers $m \in \{2, 3, 4\}$ manifest in certain ranges of ${\rm Ha}$ in the experiments, depending on whether the values of ${\rm Ha}$ were fixed or varied from different initial values. These observations demonstrate the multistability of rotating wav…
The DTS experiment is a spherical Couette flow experiment with an imposed dipolar magnetic field. Liquid sodium is used as a working fluid. In a series of measurement campaigns, we have obtained data on the mean axisymmetric velocity, the mean induced magnetic field and electric potentials. All these quantities are coupled through the induction equation. In particular, a strong omega-eff ect is produced by di fferential rotation within the fluid shell, inducing a significant azimuthal magnetic field. Taking advantage of the simple spherical geometry of the experiment, I expand the azimuthal an…
We derive the velocity profiles in strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow for the general case of independently rotating cylinders. The theory is based on the Navier-Stokes equations in the appropriate (cylinder) geometry. In particular, we derive the axial and the angular velocity profiles as functions of distance from the cylinder walls and find that both follow a logarithmic profile, with downwards-bending curvature corrections, which are more pronounced for the angular velocity profile as compared to the axial velocity profile, and which strongly increase with decreasing ratio $η$ between …
In an earlier paper we showed that the combination of azimuthal magnetic fields and super-rotation in Taylor-Couette flows of conducting fluids can be unstable against non-axisymmetric perturbations if the magnetic Prandtl number of the fluid is $Pm\neq 1$. Here we demonstrate that the addition of a weak axial field component may allow axisymmetric perturbation patterns for $Pm$ of order unity depending on the boundary conditions. The axisymmetric modes only occur for magnetic Mach numbers (of the azimuthal field) of order unity, while higher values are necessary for non-axisymmetric modes. Th…
The instability of a supercritical Taylor-Couette flow of a conducting fluid with resting outer cylinder under the influence of a uniform axial electric current is investigated for magnetic Prandtl number Pm=1. In the linear theory the critical Reynolds number for axisymmetric perturbations is not influenced by the current-induced axisymmetric magnetic field but all axisymmetric magnetic perturbations decay. The nonaxisymmetric perturbations with m=1 are excited even without rotation for large enough Hartmann numbers ("Tayler instability"). For slow rotation their growth rates scale with the A…
We investigate the linear stability of a thin, suspended, annular film of conducting fluid with a voltage difference applied between its inner and outer edges. For a sufficiently large voltage, such a film is unstable to radially-driven electroconvection due to charges which develop on its free surfaces. The film can also be subjected to a Couette shear by rotating its inner edge. This combination is experimentally realized using films of smectic A liquid crystals. In the absence of shear, the convective flow consists of a stationary, azimuthally one-dimensional pattern of symmetric, counter-r…
A new mixing layer can be generated if the rotation of either of the two cylinders in a Taylor--Couette apparatus varies discontinuously along the symmetry axis. The mixing zone between the two resulting co-current streams gives rise to radial vorticity in addition to the primary axial vorticity. An analytic solution for the azimuthal velocity has been derived from which we show that the width of the mixing zone varies only with radial position.
We consider axially periodic Taylor-Couette geometry with insulating boundary conditions. The imposed basic states are so-called Chandrasekhar states, where the azimuthal flow $U_ϕ$ and magnetic field $B_ϕ$ have the same radial profiles. Mainly three particular profiles are considered: the Rayleigh limit, quasi-Keplerian, and solid-body rotation. In each case we begin by computing linear instability curves and their dependence on the magnetic Prandtl number Pm. For the azimuthal wavenumber m=1 modes, the instability curves always scale with the Reynolds number and the Hartmann number. For suff…
We numerically compute axisymmetric Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of axially periodic magnetic fields, with Hartmann numbers up to $Ha^2=10^7$. The geometry of the field singles out special field lines on which Shercliff layers form. These are simple shear layers for insulating boundaries, versus super-rotating or counter-rotating layers for conducting boundaries. Some field configurations have previously studied spherical analogs, but fundamentally new configurations also exist, having no spherical analogs. Finally, we explore the influence of azimuthal fields $B_ϕ\sim r^{-1}{\bf\hat e}…
SCF experiments were conducted according to the work of Egbers and Rath [Acta Mech. 111 pp. 125--140 (1995)]. Through visualization using aluminium flakes drifting on a horizontal plane illuminated by a laser sheet, the flow was identified as a spiral wave with azimuthal wavenumber $m=3$, using the experimentally obtained and numerically deduced comparison between phase velocities. By solving the equation of motion for the infinitesimal planar particles advecting in the flow field of the spiral wave, a visual distribution of reflected light was reproduced virtually, which is in good agreement …
The statistics of velocity fluctuations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are examined. The rotation rate of the inner and outer cylinder are varied while keeping the Taylor number fixed to $1.49 \times 10^{12}$ ($\mathcal{O}(\text{Re})=10^6$). The azimuthal velocity component of the flow is measured using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). For each experiment $5\times10^6$ datapoints are acquired and carefully analysed. Using extended self-similarity (ESS) \cite{ben93b} the longitudinal structure function exponents are extracted, and are found to weakly depend on the ratio of the rotation rates. …
We investigate a theoretical framework for modeling fluid turbulence based on the formalism of exact coherent structures (ECSs). Although highly promising, existing evidence for the role of ECSs in turbulent flows is largely circumstantial and comes primarily from idealized numerical simulations. In particular, it remains unclear whether three-dimensional turbulent flows in experiment shadow any ECSs. In order to conclusively answer this question, a hierarchy of ECSs should be computed on a domain and with boundary conditions exactly matching experiment. The present study makes the first step …
A counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow with relatively small radius ratios of $η$ = 0.2--0.5 was investigated over a wide range of the Reynolds number, from laminar to turbulent regime, by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We investigated the $η$ dependence of the flow structure and determined a critical value between $η$ = 0.2 and 0.3, below which, the stable outer cylinder side exhibited a modal structure that was different from the Taylor-vortex flow on the inner side. At $η\geq$ 0.3, the Taylor-vortex on the unstable inner side dominated the entire flow field between…
We numerically compute the flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a Taylor-Couette geometry where the rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinders satisfy $Ω_o/Ω_i=(r_o/r_i)^{-3/2}$. In this quasi-Keplerian regime a non-magnetic system would be Rayleigh-stable for all Reynolds numbers $Re$, and the resulting purely azimuthal flow incapable of kinematic dynamo action for all magnetic Reynolds numbers $Rm$. For $Re=10^4$ and $Rm=10^5$ we demonstrate the existence of a finite-amplitude dynamo, whereby a suitable initial condition yields mutually sustaining turbulence and magnetic fields, …
Using high-resolution particle image velocimetry we measure velocity profiles, the wind Reynolds number and characteristics of turbulent plumes in Taylor-Couette flow for a radius ratio of 0.5 and Taylor number of up to $6.2\cdot10^9$. The extracted angular velocity profiles follow a log-law more closely than the azimuthal velocity profiles due to the strong curvature of this $η=0.5$ setup. The scaling of the wind Reynolds number with the Taylor number agrees with the theoretically predicted 3/7-scaling for the classical turbulent regime, which is much more pronounced than for the well-explore…
Taylor-Couette (TC) flow, the flow between two independently rotating and co-axial cylinders is commonly used as a canonical model for shear flows. Unlike plane Couette, pinned secondary flows can be found in TC flow. These are known as Taylor rolls and drastically affect the flow behaviour. We study the possibility of modifying these secondary structures using patterns of stress-free and no-slip boundary conditions on the inner cylinder. For this, we perform direct numerical simulations of narrow-gap TC flow with pure inner cylinder rotation at four different shear Reynolds numbers up to $Re_…
Transient growth due to non-normality is investigated for the Taylor-Couette problem with counter-rotating cylinders as a function of aspect ratio eta and Reynolds number Re. For all Re < 500, transient growth is enhanced by curvature, i.e. is greater for eta < 1 than for eta = 1, the plane Couette limit. For fixed Re < 130 it is found that the greatest transient growth is achieved for eta between the Taylor-Couette linear stability boundary, if it exists, and one, while for Re > 130 the greatest transient growth is achieved for eta on the linear stability boundary. Transient growth is shown t…
The transition to turbulence in Taylor-Couette flow often occurs via a sequence of supercritical bifurcations to progressively more complex, yet stable, flows. We describe a subcritical laminar-turbulent transition in the counter-rotating regime mediated by an unstable intermediate state in a system with an axial aspect ratio of $Γ=5.26$ and a radius ratio of $η=0.905$. In this regime, flow visualization experiments and numerical simulations indicate the intermediate state corresponds to an aperiodic flow featuring interpenetrating spirals. Furthermore, the reverse transition out of turbulence…
First results of a new spherical Couette experiment are presented. The liquid metal flow in a spherical shell is exposed to a homogeneous axial magnetic field. For a Reynolds number Re=1000, we study the effect of increasing Hartmann number Ha. The resulting flow structures are inspected by ultrasound Doppler velocimetry. With a weak applied magnetic field, we observe an equatorially anti-symmetric jet instability with azimuthal wave number m=3. As the magnetic field strength increases, this instability vanishes. When the field is increased further, an equatorially symmetric return flow instab…
Flows between concentric, counter rotating spherical boundaries are under investigation in the gap with size equal to inner sphere radius. Outer sphere rotational rate is fixed, while inner sphere rotational rate has time periodic variations. The amplitudes and frequencies of these variations are small relative to both spheres averaged rotational rates. With amplitude increase transition from initial periodical flow to chaos is occurred. To determine state of the flow time series of azimuthal velocity, taken with laser Doppler anemometry, were used. We demonstrate appearance of flow states in …
We numerically investigate the saturation of the hydromagnetic instabilities of a magnetized spherical Couette flow. Previous simulations [Hollerbach, 2009] demonstrated region where the axisymmetric flow, calculated from a 2-D simulation, was linearly unstable to nonaxisymmetric perturbations. Full, nonlinear, 3d simulations [Hollerbach 2009, Travnikov 2011] showed that the saturated state would consist only of harmonics of one azimuthal wave number, though there were bifurcations and transitions as nondimensional parameters (Re, Ha) were varied. Here, the energy transfer between different az…
We conduct a global, weakly nonlinear analysis of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a Taylor-Couette flow. This is a multiscale perturbative treatment of the nonideal, axisymmetric MRI near threshold, subject to realistic radial boundary conditions and cylindrical geometry. We analyze both the standard MRI, initialized by a constant vertical background magnetic field, and the helical MRI, with an azimuthal background field component. This is the first weakly nonlinear analysis of the MRI in a global Taylor-Couette geometry, as well as the first weakly nonlinear analysis of the helical…
We study magnetic Taylor-Couette flow in a system having nondimensional radii $r_i=1$ and $r_o=2$, and periodic in the axial direction with wavelengths $h\ge100$. The rotation ratio of the inner and outer cylinders is adjusted to be slightly in the Rayleigh-stable regime, where magnetic fields are required to destabilize the flow, in this case triggering the axisymmetric helical magnetorotational instability (HMRI). Two choices of imposed magnetic field are considered, both having the same azimuthal component $B_ϕ=r^{-1}$, but differing axial components. The first choice has $B_z=0.1$, and yie…
The existence of triadic resonances in the magnetized spherical Couette system (MSC) is related to the development of modulated rotating waves, which are quasiperiodic flows understood in terms of bifurcation theory in systems with symmetry. In contrast to previous studies in spherical geometry the resonant modes are not inertial waves but related with the radial jet instability which is strongly equatorially antisymmetric. We propose a general framework in which triadic resonances are generated through successive Hopf bifurcations from the base state. The study relies on an accurate frequency…
We study the stability of the Couette-Taylor flow between porous cylinders with radial throughflow. It had been shown earlier that this flow can be unstable with respect to non-axisymmetric (azimuthal or helical) waves provided that the radial Reynolds number, $R$ (constructed using the radial velocity at the inner cylinder and its radius), is high. In this paper, we present a very detailed and, in many respects, novel chart of critical curves in a region of moderate values of $R$, and we show that, starting from values of $R$, as low as $10$, the critical modes inherited from the inviscid ins…
Annular Couette flow is the flow between two coaxial cylinders driven by the axial translation of the inner cylinder. It is investigated using direct numerical simulation in long domains, with an emphasis on the laminar-turbulent coexistence regime found for marginally low values of the Reynolds number. Three distinct flow regimes are demonstrated as the radius ratio $η$ is decreased from 0.8 to 0.5 and finally to 0.1. The high-$η$ regime features helically-shaped turbulent patches coexisting with laminar flow, as in planar shear flows. The moderate-$η$ regime does not feature any marked lamin…
Direct numerical simulations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are performed up to inner cylinder Reynolds numbers of {Re_i=10^5} for a radius ratio of {η=r_i/r_o=0.714} between the inner and outer cylinder. With increasing {Re_i}, the flow undergoes transitions between three different regimes: (i) a flow dominated by large coherent structures, (ii) an intermediate transitional regime, and (iii) a flow with developed turbulence. In the first regime the large--scale rolls completely drive the meridional flow while in the second one the coherent structures recover only on average. The presence of…
We present a reconstruction of the mean axisymmetric azimuthal and meridional flows in the DTS liquid sodium experiment. The experimental device sets a spherical Couette flow enclosed between two concentric spherical shells where the inner sphere holds a strong dipolar magnet, which acts as a magnetic propeller when rotated. Measurements of the mean velocity, mean induced magnetic field and mean electric potentials have been acquired inside and outside the fluid for an inner sphere rotation rate of 9 Hz (Rm 28). Using the induction equation to relate all measured quantities to the mean flow, w…
The long therm behavior of chaotic flows is investigated by means of time dependent frequency analysis. The system under test consists of an electrically conducting fluid, confined between two differentially rotating spheres. The spherical setup is exposed to an axial magnetic field. The classical Fourier Transform method provides a first estimation of the time dependence of the frequencies associated to the flow, as well as its volume-averaged properties. It is however unable to detect strange attractors close to regular solutions in the Feigenbaum as well as Newhouse-Ruelle-Takens bifurcatio…
According to Rayleigh's criterion, rotating flows are linearly stable when their specific angular momentum increases radially outward. The celebrated magnetorotational instability opens a way to destabilize those flows, as long as the angular velocity is decreasing outward. Using a short-wavelength approximation we demonstrate that even flows with very steep positive shear can be destabilized by azimuthal magnetic fields which are current-free within the fluid. We illustrate the transition of this instability to a rotationally enhanced kink-type instability in case of a homogeneous current in …
Heat and mass transport is generally closely correlated to momentum transport in shear flows. This so-called Reynolds analogy between advective heat or mass transport and momentum transport hinders efficiency improvements in engineering heat and mass transfer applications. I show through direct numerical simulations that in plane Couette and Taylor-Couette flow rotation can strongly influence wall-to-wall passive tracer transport and make it much faster than momentum transport, clearly in violation of the Reynolds analogy. This difference between passive tracer transport, representative of hea…
The decay of Taylor-Couette turbulence, i.e~the flow between two coaxial and independently rotating cylinders, is numerically studied by instantaneously stopping the forcing from an initially statistically stationary flow field at a Reynolds number of $Re=3.5\times 10^4$. The effect of wall-friction is analysed by comparing three separate cases, in which the cylinders are either suddenly made no-slip or stress-free. Different life stages are observed during the decay. In the first stage, the decay is dominated by large-scale rolls. Counterintuitively, when these rolls fade away, if the flow in…
We study the decay of high-Reynolds number Taylor-Couette turbulence, i.e. the turbulent flow between two coaxial rotating cylinders. To do so, the rotation of the inner cylinder (Re$_i=2 \times 10^6$, the outer cylinder is at rest) is stopped within 12 s, thus fully removing the energy input to the system. Using a combination of laser Doppler anemometry and particle image velocimetry measurements, six decay decades of the kinetic energy could be captured. First, in the absence of cylinder rotation, the flow-velocity during the decay does not develop any height dependence in contrast to the we…
We investigate the local self-sustained process underlying spiral turbulence in counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow using a periodic annular domain, shaped as a parallelogram, two of whose sides are aligned with the cylindrical helix described by the spiral pattern. The primary focus of the study is placed on the emergence of drifting-rotating waves ({\sc drw}) that capture, in a relatively small domain, the main features of coherent structures typically observed in developed turbulence. The transitional dynamics of the subcritical region, far below the first instability of the laminar circul…
We investigate numerically kinematic dynamos driven by flow of electrically conducting fluid in the shell between two concentric differentially rotating spheres, a configuration normally referred to as spherical Couette flow. We compare between axisymmetric (2D) and fully three dimensional flows, between low and high global rotation rates, between prograde and retrograde differential rotations, between weak and strong nonlinear inertial forces, between insulating and conducting boundaries, and between two aspect ratios. The main results are as follows. Azimuthally drifting Rossby waves arising…
The nonaxisymmetric azimuthal magnetorotational instability is studied for hydromagnetic Taylor-Couette flows between cylinders of finite electrical conductivity. We find that the magnetic Prandtl number Pm determines whether perfectly conducting or insulating boundary conditions lead to lower Hartmann numbers for the onset of instability. Regardless of the imposed rotation profile, for small Pm the solutions for perfectly conducting cylinders become unstable for weaker magnetic fields than the solutions for insulating cylinders. The critical Hartmann and Reynolds numbers form monotonic functi…
We study magnetic effects induced by rigidly rotating plates enclosing a cylindrical MHD Taylor-Couette flow at the finite aspect ratio $H/D=10$. The fluid confined between the cylinders is assumed to be liquid metal characterized by small magnetic Prandtl number, the cylinders are perfectly conducting, an axial magnetic field is imposed $\Ha \approx 10$, the rotation rates correspond to $\Rey$ of order $10^2-10^3$. We show that the end-plates introduce, besides the well known Ekman circulation, similar magnetic effects which arise for infinite, rotating plates, horizontally unbounded by any w…
The dynamics of fluctuations in a fast rotating spherical Couette flow experiment in the presence of a strong dipolar magnetic field is investigated in detail, through a thorough analysis of the experimental data as well as a numerical study. Fluctuations within the conducting fluid (liquid sodium) are characterized by the presence of several oscillation modes, identified as magneto-Coriolis (MC) modes, with definite symmetry and azimuthal number. A numerical simulation provides eigensolutions which exhibit oscillation frequencies and magnetic signature comparable to the observation. The main …
We investigate the quasi two-dimensional Taylor-Couette system in the regime where the radius ratio is close to unity - a transitional regime between three and two dimensions. By systematically increasing the Reynolds number we observe a number of standard transitions, such as one from the classical Taylor vortex flow (TVF) to wavy vortex flow (WVF), as well as the transition to fully developed turbulence. Prior to the onset of turbulence we observe intermittent burst patterns of localized turbulent patches, confirming the experimentally observed pattern of very short wavelength bursts (VSWBs)…
An analytical approach is carried out that provides an inviscid stability criterion for the strato-rotational instability (in short SRI) occurring in a Taylor-Couette system. The control parameters of the problem are the rotation ratio $μ$ and the radius ratio $η$. The study is motivated by recent experimental \cite{legal} and numerical \cite{rudi, rudi2} results reporting the existence of unstable modes beyond the Rayleigh line for centrifugal instability ($μ=η^2$). The modified Rayleigh criterion for stably stratified flows provides the instability condition, $μ<1$, while in experiments unst…
Hollerbach and Rudiger have reported a new type of magnetorotational instability (MRI) in magnetized Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of combined axial and azimuthal magnetic fields. The salient advantage of this "helical'' MRI (HMRI) is that marginal instability occurs at arbitrarily low magnetic Reynolds and Lundquist numbers, suggesting that HMRI might be easier to realize than standard MRI (axial field only). We confirm their results, calculate HMRI growth rates, and show that in the resistive limit, HMRI is a weakly destabilized inertial oscillation propagating in a unique direction al…
Rotating waves (RW) bifurcating from the axisymmetric basic magnetized spherical Couette (MSC) flow are computed by means of Newton-Krylov continuation techniques for periodic orbits. In addition, their stability is analysed in the framework of Floquet theory. The inner sphere rotates whilst the outer is kept at rest and the fluid is subjected to an axial magnetic field. For a moderate Reynolds number ${\rm Re}=10^3$ (measuring inner rotation) the effect of increasing the magnetic field strength (measured by the Hartmann number ${\rm Ha}$) is addressed in the range ${\rm Ha}\in(0,80)$ correspo…
Magnetorotational instability (MRI) is one of the fundamental processes in astrophysics, driving angular momentum transport and mass accretion in a wide variety of cosmic objects. Despite much theoretical/numerical and experimental efforts over the last decades, its saturation mechanism and amplitude, which sets the angular momentum transport rate, remains not well understood, especially in the limit of high resistivity, or small magnetic Prandtl numbers typical to interiors (dead zones) of protoplanetary disks, liquid cores of planets and liquid metals in laboratory. Using direct numerical si…
We analyze the stability of a cylindrical Couette flow under the imposition of a weak axial flow in case of a very short cylinder with a narrow annulus gap. We consider an incompressible viscous fluid which is contained in the narrow gap between two concentric short cylinders, where the inner cylinder rotates with constant angular velocity. The caps of the cylinders have narrow tubes conically tapering to super narrow slits which allow for an axial flow along the surface of the inner cylinder. The approximated solution for the Couette flow for short cylinders was found and used for the stabili…
In view of new experimental data the instability against adiabatic nonaxisymmetric perturbations of a Taylor-Couette flow with an axial density stratification is considered in dependence of the Reynolds number Re of rotation and the Brunt-Väisälä number Rn of the stratification. The flows at and beyond the Rayleigh limit become unstable between a lower and an upper Reynolds number (for fixed Rn). The rotation can thus be too slow or too fast for the stratorotational instability. The upper Reynolds number above which the instability decays, has its maximum value for the potential flow (driven b…
We study periodically driven Taylor-Couette turbulence, i.e. the flow confined between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders. Here, the inner cylinder is driven sinusoidally while the outer cylinder is kept at rest (time-averaged Reynolds number is $Re_i = 5 \times 10^5$). Using particle image velocimetry (PIV), we measure the velocity over a wide range of modulation periods, corresponding to a change in Womersley number in the range $15 \leq Wo \leq 114$. To understand how the flow responds to a given modulation, we calculate the phase delay and amplitude response of the azimuthal …
The Derviche Tourneur Sodium experiment, a spherical Couette magnetohydrodynamics experiment with liquid sodium as the medium and a dipole magnetic field imposed from the inner sphere, recently underwent upgrades to its diagnostics to better characterize the flow and induced magnetic fields with global rotation. In tandem with the upgrades, a set of direct numerical simulations were run with the xshells code to give a more complete view of the fluid and magnetic dynamics at various rotation rates of the inner and outer spheres. These simulations reveal several dynamic regimes, determined by th…
