We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the Type II supernova (SN II) SN 2017ivv (also known as ASASSN-17qp). Located in an extremely faint galaxy (M$_r=-10.3$ mag), SN 2017ivv shows an unprecedented evolution during the two years of observations. At early times, the light curve shows a fast rise ($\sim6-8$ days) to a peak of ${\rm M}^{\rm max}_{g}= -17.84$ mag, followed by a very rapid decline of $7.94\pm0.48$ mag per 100 days in the $V-$band. The extensive photometric coverage at late phases shows that the radioactive tail has two slopes, one steeper than that expected from the decay of $^{56}$Co (between 100 and 350 days), and another slower (after 450 days), probably produced by an additional energy source. From the bolometric light curve, we estimated that the amount of ejected $^{56}$Ni is $\sim0.059\pm0.003$ M$\odot$. The nebular spectra of SN 2017ivv show a remarkable transformation that allows the evolution to be split into three phases: (1) H$α$ strong phase ($<200$ days); (2) H$α$ weak phase (between 200 and 350 days); and (3) H$α$ broad phase ($>500$ days). We find that the nebular analysis favours a binary progenitor and an asymmetric explosion. Finally, comparing the nebular spectra of SN 2017ivv to models suggests a progenitor with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 15 -- 17 \Msun.
We present results based on a well sampled optical ($UBVRI$) and ultraviolet ({\it Swift}/UVOT) imaging, and low-resolution optical spectroscopic follow-up observations of the nearby Type Ic supernova (SN) ASASSN-16fp (SN 2016coi). The SN was monitored during the photospheric phase ($-10$ to $+$33 days with respect to the $B$-band maximum light). The rise to maximum light and early post-maximum decline of the light curves are slow. The peak absolute magnitude ($M_{V}$ = $-17.7\pm0.2$ mag) of ASASSN-16fp is comparable with broad-lined Ic SN 2002ap, SN 2012ap and transitional Ic SN 2004aw but co…
The nebular-epoch spectrum of the rapidly declining, "transitional" type Ia supernova (SN) 2007on showed double emission peaks, which have been interpreted as indicating that the SN was the result of the direct collision of two white dwarfs. The spectrum can be reproduced using two distinct emission components, one red-shifted and one blue shifted. These components are similar in mass but have slightly different degrees of ionization. They recede from one another at a line-of-sight speed larger than the sum of the combined expansion velocities of their emitting cores, thereby acting as two ind…
We report the early discovery and multi-color ($BVI$) high-cadence light curve analyses of a rapidly-declining sub-Chandrasekhar Type Ia supernova KSP-OT-201509b (= AT2015cx) from the KMTNet Supernova Program. The Phillips parameter and color stretch parameter of KSP-OT-201509b (= AT2015cx) are $Δ$$M_{B,15}$ $\simeq$ 1.62 mag and $s_{BV}$ $\simeq$ 0.54, respectively, at an inferred redshift of 0.072. These, together with other measured parameters (such as the strength of the secondary $I$-band peak, colors and luminosity), identify the source to be a rapidly-declining Type Ia of transitional n…
We present photometry, polarimetry and spectroscopy of the Type II supernova ASASSN-16ab/SN 2016B in PGC 037392. The photometric and spectroscopic follow-up commenced about two weeks after shock breakout and continued until nearly six months. The light curve of SN 2016B exhibits intermediate properties between those of Type IIP and IIL. The early decline is steep (1.68 $\pm$ 0.10 mag 100 d$^{-1}$), followed by a shallower plateau phase (0.47 $\pm$ 0.24 mag 100 d$^{-1}$). The optically thick phase lasts for 118 d, similar to Type IIP. The $^{56}$Ni mass estimated from the radioactive tail of th…
Photometric and spectroscopic observations of type Ia supernova 2015bp are presented, spanning $\sim -6$ to $\sim +141$ days since $B$-band maximum. Also presented are unpublished HCT spectra of type Ia iPTF13ebh between $-11$ to +34 days since $B$-band maximum. SN 2015bp shows rapidly declining light curves with $Δm_{15}(B)=1.72 \pm 0.04$. The $I$-band light curve shows a clear secondary maximum and peaks before the $B$-band maximum, placing SN 2015bp in the transitional category of SNe Ia. The spectral evolution of SN 2015bp resembles other transitional SNe Ia rather than 1991bg-like events.…
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia SN 2019yvq, from its discovery $\sim$1 day after explosion to $\sim$100 days after its peak brightness. This SN exhibits several unusual features, most notably an extremely bright UV excess seen within $\sim$5 days of its explosion. As seen in Swift UV data, this early excess outshines its "peak" brightness, making this object more extreme than other SNe with early UV/blue excesses (e.g. iPTF14atg and SN 2017cbv). In addition, it was underluminous ($M_B=-18.4$), relatively quickly declining ($Δm_{15}(B)=1.35$), and sho…

Key information about the progenitor system and the explosion mechanism of Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) can be obtained from early observations, within a few days from explosion. iPTF16abc was discovered as a young SN~Ia with excellent early time data. Here, we present photometry and spectroscopy of the SN in the nebular phase. A comparison of the early time data with a sample of SNe~Ia shows distinct features, differing from normal SNe~Ia at early phases but similar to normal SNe~Ia at a few weeks after maximum light (i.e. the transitional phase) and well into the nebular phase. The transparen…

We present an analysis of ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared observations of the fast-declining Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) 2007on and 2011iv, hosted by the Fornax cluster member NGC 1404. The B-band light curves of SN 2007on and SN 2011iv are characterised by dm_15(B) decline-rate values of 1.96 mag and 1.77 mag, respectively. Although they have similar decline rates, their peak B- and H-band magnitudes differ by ~0.60 mag and ~0.35 mag, respectively. After correcting for the luminosity vs. decline rate and the luminosity vs. colour relations, the peak B-band and H-band light curves provide di…
The diversity of Type II supernovae (SNe II) is thought to be driven mainly by differences in their progenitor's hydrogen-rich (H-rich) envelope mass, with SNe IIP having long plateaus ($\sim100$ days) and the most massive H-rich envelopes. However, it is an ongoing mystery why SNe II with short plateaus (tens of days) are rarely seen. Here, we present optical/near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of luminous Type II short-plateau SNe 2006Y, 2006ai, and 2016egz. Their plateaus of about $50$-$70$ days and luminous optical peaks ($\lesssim-18.4$ mag) indicate significant pre-e…
Using high-resolution optical spectroscopy we determine the chemical abundance of the secondary star in the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1023+0038. We measure a metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.48 +/- 0.04 which is higher than the Solar value and in general find that the element abundances are different compared to the secondary stars in X-ray binaries and stars in the solar neighbourhood of similar Fe content. Our results suggest that the pulsar was formed in a supernova explosion. We find that supernova models, where matter that has been processed in the supernova is captured by the secondary sta…
We present the $H$-band wavelength region of thirty post-maximum light near-infrared (NIR) spectra of fourteen transitional and sub-luminous type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), extending from $+$5d to +20d relative to the epoch of $B$-band maximum. We introduce a new observable, the blue-edge velocity, $v_{edge}$, of the prominent Fe/Co/Ni-peak $H$-band emission feature which is quantitatively measured. The $v_{edge}$ parameter is found to slowly decrease over sub-type ranging from around $-$13,000km/s for transitional SNe~Ia, down to $-$5,000km/s for the sub-luminous SNe Ia. Furthermore, inspection …
In this paper, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a subluminous type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2012ij, which has an absolute $B$-band peak magnitude $M_{B,\rm{max}}$ = $-$17.95 $\pm$ 0.15 mag. The $B$-band light curve exhibits a fast post-peak decline with $Δm_{15}(B)$ = 1.86 $\pm$ 0.05 mag. All the $R$ and $I$/$i$-band light curves show a weak secondary peak/shoulder feature at about 3 weeks after the peak, like some transitional subclass of SNe Ia, which could result from an incomplete merger of near-infrared (NIR) double peaks. The spectra are characterized by Ti~{\sc ii} a…

Unburned carbon is potentially a powerful probe of Type Ia supernova (SN) explosion mechanisms. We present comprehensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) data on the "transitional" Type Ia SN 2015bp. An early NIR spectrum ($t = -$9.9 days with respect to B-band maximum) displays a striking C I $\lambda1.0693\,μ\rm{m}$ line at $11.9 \times 10^3$~km s$^{-1}$, distinct from the prominent Mg II $\lambda1.0927\,μ\rm{m}$ feature, which weakens toward maximum light. SN 2015bp also displays a clear C II $\lambda6580$A notch early ($t = -10.9$ days) at $13.2 \times 10^3$~km s$^{-1}$, consistent with our…

Context: Type Ibn supernovae are a rare class of stripped envelope supernovae interacting with a helium-rich CSM. The majority of the SNe Ibn reported display a surprising homogeneity in their fast lightcurves and starforming hosts. Aims: We present the discovery and study of SN 2020bqj (ZTF20aalrqbu), a SN Ibn with a long-duration peak plateau lasting 40 days and hosted by a faint low-mass galaxy. We aim to explain its peculiar properties using an extensive data set. Methods: We compare the evolution of SN 2020bqj with SNe Ibn from the literature. We fit the bolometric and multi-band lightcur…
The observed diversity in Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) -- the thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarf stars used as cosmological standard candles -- is currently met with a variety of explosion models and progenitor scenarios. To help improve our understanding of whether and how often different models contribute to the occurrence of SNe Ia and their assorted properties, we present a comprehensive analysis of seven nearby SNe Ia. We obtained one to two epochs of optical spectra with Gemini Observatory during the nebular phase ($>$200 days past peak) for each of these events, all of…
Our recent work demonstrates a correlation between the high-velocity blue edge, $v_{edge}$, of the iron-peak Fe/Co/Ni $H$-band emission feature and the optical light curve shape of normal, transitional and sub-luminous type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia). We explain this correlation in terms of SN Ia physics. $v_{edge}$ corresponds to the sharp transition between the complete and incomplete silicon burning regions in the ejecta. It measures the point in velocity space where the outer $^{56}$Ni mass fraction, $X_{\rm{Ni}}$, falls to the order of 0.03-0.10. For a given $^{56}$Ni mass, $M(^{56}Ni)$, $v_{…
We have assembled a dataset of 165 low redshift, $z<$0.06, publicly available type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We produce maximum light magnitude ($M_{B}$ and $M_{V}$) distributions of SNe Ia to explore the diversity of parameter space that they can fill. Before correction for host galaxy extinction we find that the mean $M_{B}$ and $M_{V}$ of SNe Ia are $-18.58\pm0.07$mag and $-18.72\pm0.05$mag respectively. Host galaxy extinction is corrected using a new method based on the SN spectrum. After correction, the mean values of $M_{B}$ and $M_{V}$ of SNe Ia are $-19.10\pm0.06$ and $-19.10\pm0.05$mag …
We present extensive optical and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of the stripped-envelope (SE) supernova SN 2010as. Spectroscopic peculiarities, such as initially weak helium features and low expansion velocities with a nearly flat evolution, place this object in the small family of events previously identified as transitional Type Ib/c supernovae (SNe). There is ubiquitous evidence of hydrogen, albeit weak, in this family of SNe, indicating that they are in fact a peculiar kind of Type IIb SNe that we name "flat-velocity Type IIb". The flat velocity evolution---which …
Radiative transfer models of two transitional type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) have been produced using the abundance stratification technique. These two objects --designated SN 2007on and SN 2011iv-- both exploded in the same galaxy, NGC 1404, which allows for a direct comparison. SN 2007on synthesised 0.25 $M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni and was less luminous than SN 2011iv, which produced 0.31 $M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni. SN 2007on had a lower central density ($ρ_{c}$) and higher explosion energy ($E_{\rm kin}$ $\sim 1.3\pm$0.3$\times10^{51}$erg) than SN 2011iv, and it produced less nuclear statistical equ…
The Ultra-Violet (UV) and Near Infrared (NIR) photometric and optical spectroscopic observations of SN 2020acat covering $\sim \! \! 250$ days after explosion are presented here. Using the fast rising photometric observations, spanning from the UV to NIR wavelengths, a pseudo-bolometric light curve was constructed and compared to several other well-observed Type IIb supernovae (SNe IIb). SN 2020acat displayed a very short rise time reaching a peak luminosity of $\mathrm{Log_{10}}(L) = 42.49 \pm 0.15 \, \mathrm{erg \, s^{-1}}$ in only $\sim \! \! 14.6 \pm 0.3$ days. From modelling of the pseudo…
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the unusual Type Ia supernova ASASSN-18tb, including a series of SALT spectra obtained over the course of nearly six months and the first observations of a supernova by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We confirm a previous observation by Kollmeier et al. (2019) showing that ASASSN-18tb is the first relatively normal Type Ia supernova to exhibit clear broad ($\sim1000$ km s$^{-1}$) H$α$ emission in its nebular phase spectra. We find that this event is best explained as a sub-Chandrasekhar mass explosion with $M_{Ni} \app…
Extensive and independent observations of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2013dy are presented, including a larger set of $UBVRI$ photometry and optical spectra from a few days before the peak brightness to $\sim$ 200 days after explosion, and ultraviolet (UV) photometry spanning from $t \approx -10$ days to $t \approx\ +15$ days referring to the $B$ band maximum. The peak brightness (i.e., $M_{\rm B} = -19.65 \pm 0.40$ mag, $L_{\rm max} = [1.95 \pm 0.55] \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and the mass of synthesised $^{56}$Ni (i.e., $M$($^{56}$Ni) = 0.90 $\pm$ 0.26 M$_{\odot}$) are calculated, and th…
We present photometry and spectroscopy of SN2013fs and SN2013fr in the first 100 days post-explosion. Both objects showed transient, relatively narrow H$α$ emission lines characteristic of SNeIIn, but later resembled normal SNeII-P or SNeII-L, indicative of fleeting interaction with circumstellar material (CSM). SN2013fs was discovered within 8hr of explosion. Its light curve exhibits a plateau, with spectra revealing strong CSM interaction at early times. It is a less luminous version of the transitional SNIIn PTF11iqb, further demonstrating a continuum of CSM interaction intensity between SN…
Optical broadband (UBVRI) photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic observations of the type II-P supernova (SN) ASASSN-14dq are presented. ASASSN-14dq exploded in a low-luminosity/metallicity host galaxy UGC 11860, the signatures of which are present as weak iron lines in the photospheric phase spectra. The SN has a plateau duration of $\sim\,$90 d, with a plateau decline rate of 1.38 $\rm mag\ (100 d)^{-1}$ in V-band which is higher than most type II-P SNe. ASASSN-14dq is a luminous type II-P SN with a peak $V$-band absolute magnitude of -17.7$\,\pm\,$0.2 mag. The light curve of ASASSN-14…
One clear observational prediction of the single degenerate progenitor scenario as the origin of type Ia supernovae (SNe) is the presence of relatively narrow ($\approx$1000 km s$^{-1}$) H$α$ emission at nebular phases, although this feature is rarely seen. We present a compilation of nebular phase H$α$ limits for SN Ia in the literature and demonstrate that this heterogenous sample has been biased towards SN Ia with relatively high luminosities and slow decline rates, as parameterized by $Δ$m$_{15}(B)$, the difference in $B$-band magnitude between maximum light and fifteen days afterward. Mot…

We present the optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021hpr. The observations covered the phase of $-$14.37 to +63.68 days relative to its maximum luminosity in the $B$ band. The evolution of multiband light/color curves of SN 2021hpr is similar to that of normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with the exception of some phases, especially a plateau phase that appeared in the $V-R$ color curve before peak luminosity, which resembles that of SN 2017cbv. The first spectrum we observed at t $\sim -$14.4 days shows a higher velocity for the Si II $λ$6…

We present near-infrared (NIR) time-series spectroscopy, as well as complementary ultraviolet (UV), optical, and NIR data, of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) iPTF13ebh, which was discovered within two days from the estimated time of explosion. The first NIR spectrum was taken merely 2.3 days after explosion and may be the earliest NIR spectrum yet obtained of a SN Ia. The most striking features in the spectrum are several NIR C I lines, and the C I λ1.0693 μm line is the strongest ever observed in a SN Ia. Interestingly, no strong optical C II counterparts were found, even though the optical spe…
There is a wide consensus that type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) originate from the thermonuclear explosion of CO white dwarfs (WD), with the lack of hydrogen in the observed spectra as a distinctive feature. Here, we present SN 2016jae, which was classified as a Type Ia SN from a spectrum obtained soon after the discovery. The SN reached a B-band peak of -17.93 +- 0.34 mag, followed by a fast luminosity decline with sBV 0.56 +- 0.06 and inferred Dm15(B) of 1.88 +- 0.10 mag. Overall, the SN appears as a "transitional" event between "normal" SNe Ia and very dim SNe Ia such as 91bg-like SNe. Its peculi…
