This paper proposes a novel location information aided multiple intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) systems. Assuming imperfect user location information, the effective angles from the IRS to the users are estimated, which is then used to design the transmit beam and IRS beam. Furthermore, closed-form expressions for the achievable rate are derived. The analytical findings indicate that the achievable rate can be improved by increasing the number of base station (BS) antennas or reflecting elements. Specifically, a power gain of order $N M^2$ is achieved, where $N$ is the antenna number and $M$ is the number of reflecting elements. Moreover, with a large number of reflecting elements, the individual signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) is proportional to $M$, while becomes proportional to $M^2$ as non-line-of-sight (NLOS) paths vanish. Also, it has been shown that high location uncertainty would significantly degrade the achievable rate. Besides, IRSs should be deployed at distinct directions (relative to the BS) and be far away from each other to reduce the interference from multiple IRSs. Finally, an optimal power allocation scheme has been proposed to improve the system performance.
In this paper, we study the performance of wideband terahertz (THz) communications assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Specifically, we first introduce a generalized channel model that is suitable for electrically large THz IRSs operating in the near-field. Unlike prior works, our channel model takes into account the spherical wavefront of the emitted electromagnetic waves and the spatial-wideband effect. We next show that conventional frequency-flat beamfocusing significantly reduces the power gain due to beam squint, and hence is highly suboptimal. More importantly, we analy…
Reducing computational complexity is crucial in optimizing the phase shifts of Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) systems since IRS-assisted communication systems are generally deployed with a large number of reflecting elements (REs). This paper focuses on studying orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple access in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided systems. Unlike most prior works assuming continuous phase shifts, we employ the practical setup where only a finite number of discrete phase shifts are available. To maximize the sum rate, active beamforming and discrete reflection need to be jointly optimized. We therefore propose an alternative optimization method to get the optimal continuous phase shifts iteratively, and then quantize each phase shift to its nearest discrete value. The sum-rate maximization of differe…

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have recently attracted the attention of communication theorists as a means to control the wireless propagation channel. It has been shown that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a single-user IRS-aided transmission increases as $N^2$, with $N$ being the number of passive reflecting elements in the IRS. This has been interpreted as a major potential advantage of using IRSs, instead of conventional Massive MIMO (mMIMO) whose SNR scales only linearly in $N$. This paper shows that this interpretation is incorrect. We first prove analytically that mMIMO alway…
