We consider an inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graph $G_N$ with vertex set $[N] = \{1,\dots,N\}$ for which the pair of vertices $i,j \in [N]$, $i\neq j$, is connected by an edge with probability $r(\tfrac{i}{N},\tfrac{j}{N})$, independently of other pairs of vertices. Here, $r\colon\,[0,1]^2 \to (0,1)$ is a symmetric function that plays the role of a reference graphon. Let $λ_N$ be the maximal eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G_N$. It is known that $λ_N/N$ satisfies a large deviation principle as $N \to \infty$. The associated rate function $ψ_r$ is given by a variational formula that involves the rate function $I_r$ of a large deviation principle on graphon space. We analyse this variational formula in order to identify the properties of $ψ_r$, specially when the reference graphon is of rank 1.
We show that the contact process on the rank-one inhomogeneous random graphs and Erdos-R{é}nyi graphs with mean degree large enough survives a time exponential in the size of these graphs for any positive infection rate. In addition, a metastable result for the extinction time is also proved.
We address the following foundational question: what is the population, and sample, Frechet mean (or median) graph of an ensemble of inhomogeneous Erdos-Renyi random graphs? We prove that if we use the Hamming distance to compute distances between graphs, then the Frechet mean (or median) graph of an ensemble of inhomogeneous random graphs is obtained by thresholding the expected adjacency matrix of the ensemble. We show that the result also holds for the sample mean (or median) when the population expected adjacency matrix is replaced with the sample mean adjacency matrix. Consequently, the F…
We consider inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi graphs. We suppose that the maximal mean degree $d$ satisfies $d \ll \log n$. We characterize the asymptotic behavior of the $n^{1 - o(1)}$ largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix and its centred version. We prove that these extreme eigenvalues are governed at first order by the largest degrees and, for the adjacency matrix, by the nonzero eigenvalues of the expectation matrix. Our results show that the extreme eigenvalues exhibit a novel behaviour which in particular rules out their convergence to a nondegenerate point process. Together with the compa…
Consider the inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graph (ERRG) on $n$ vertices for which each pair $i,j\in\{1,\ldots,n\}$, $i\neq j$ is connected independently by an edge with probability $r_n(\frac{i-1}{n},\frac{j-1}{n})$, where $(r_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ is a sequence of graphons converging to a reference graphon $r$. As a generalization of the celebrated LDP for ERRGs by Chatterjee and Varadhan (2010), Dhara and Sen (2019) proved a large deviation principle (LDP) for a sequence of such graphs under the assumption that $r$ is bounded away from 0 and 1, and with a rate function in the form of a low…
Inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graphs $\mathbb G_N$ on $N$ vertices in the non-dense regime are considered in this paper. The edge between the pair of vertices $\{i,j\}$ is retained with probability $\varepsilon_N\,f(\frac{i}{N},\frac{j}{N})$, $1 \leq i \neq j \leq N$, independently of other edges, where $f\colon\,[0,1] \times [0,1] \to [0,\infty)$ is a continuous function such that $f(x,y)=f(y,x)$ for all $x,y \in [0,1]$. We study the empirical distribution of both the adjacency matrix $A_N$ and the Laplacian matrix $Δ_N$ associated with $\mathbb G_N$ in the limit as $N \to \infty$ when $\l…
We provide a characterization for anti-concentration of inhomogeneous random walks in non-abelian groups. In application we extend the classical bounds by Erdos-Littlewood-Offord and Sarkozy-Szemeredi to non-abelian settings.
Rank 1 inhomogeneous random graphs are a natural generalization of Erdős Rényi random graphs. In this generalization each node is given a weight. Then the probability that an edge is present depends on the product of the weights of the nodes it is connecting. In this article, we give precise and uniform exponential bounds on the size, weight and surplus of rank 1 inhomogeneous random graphs where the weights of the nodes behave like a random variable with finite fourth moment. We focus on the case where the mean degree of a random node is slightly larger than 1, we call that case the barely su…
In this note we study inhomogeneous random bipartite graphs in random environment. These graphs can be thought of as an extension of the classical Erdös-Rényi random graphs in a random environment. We show that the expected number of perfect matchings obeys a precise quenched asymptotic and that it can be approximated using an iterative process that converges exponentially fast.
We consider an inhomogeneous version of the Barak-Erdős graph, i.e. a directed Erős-Rényi random graph on $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with no loop. Given $f$ a Riemann-integrable non-negative function on $[0,1]^2$ and $γ> 0$, we define $G(n,f,γ)$ as the random graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ such that for each $i < j$ the directed edge $(i,j)$ is present with probability $ p_{i, j}^{(n)} = \frac{f(i/n,j/n)}{n^γ}$, independently of any other edge. We denote by $L_n$ the length of the shortest path between vertices $1$ and $n$, and take interest in the asymptotic behaviour of $L_n$ as $n \to \infty$…
In this paper we study the diameter of Inhomogeneous random graphs $G(n,κ,p)$ that are induced by irreducible kernels $κ$. The kernels we consider act on separable metric spaces and are almost everywhere continuous. We generalize results known for the Erdős-Rényi model $G(n,p)$ for several ranges of $p$. We find upper and lower bounds for the diameter of $G(n,κ,p)$ in terms of the expansion factor and two explicit constants that depend on the behavior of the kernel over partitions of the metric space.
We consider the $t$-improper chromatic number of the Erd{\H o}s-R{é}nyi random graph $G(n,p)$. The t-improper chromatic number $χ^t(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest number of colours needed in a colouring of the vertices in which each colour class induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most $t$. If $t = 0$, then this is the usual notion of proper colouring. When the edge probability $p$ is constant, we provide a detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour of $χ^t(G(n,p))$ over the range of choices for the growth of $t = t(n)$.
The $N$ vertices of a quantum random graph are each a circle independently punctured at Poisson points of arrivals, with parallel connections derived through for each pair of these punctured circles by yet another independent Poisson process. Considering these graphs at their critical parameters, we show that the joint law of the re-scaled by $N^{2/3}$ and ordered sizes of their connected components, converges to that of the ordered lengths of excursions above zero for a reflected Brownian motion with drift. Thereby, this work forms the first example of an inhomogeneous random graph, beyond th…
For a finite random graph, we defined a simple model of statistical mechanics. We obtain an annealed asymptotic result for the random partition function for this model on finite random graphs as n; the size of the graph is very large. To obtain this result, we define the empirical bond distribution, which enumerates the number of bonds between a given couple of spins, and empirical spin distribution, which enumerates the number of sites having a given spin on the spinned random graphs. For these empirical distributions we extend the large deviation principle(LDP) to cover random graphs with co…
Using the weak convergence approach to large deviations, we formulate and prove the large deviation principle (LDP) for W-random graphs in the cut-norm topology. This generalizes the LDP for Erdős-R{\' e}nyi random graphs by Chatterjee and Varadhan. Furthermore, we translate the LDP for random graphs to a class of interacting dynamical systems on such graphs. To this end, we demonstrate that the solutions of the dynamical models depend continuously on the underlying graphs with respect to the cut-norm and apply the contraction principle.
Given a graph $G$ and a constant $γ\in [0,1]$, let $ω^{(γ)}(G)$ be the largest integer $r$ such that there exists an $r$-vertex subgraph of $G$ containing at least $γ\binom{r}{2}$ edges. It was recently shown that $ω^{(γ)}(G)$ is highly concentrated when $G$ is an Erdős-Rényi random graph (Balister, Bollobás, Sahasrabudhe, Veremyev, 2019). This paper provides a simple method to extend that result to a setting of inhomogeneous random graphs, showing that $ω^{(γ)}(G)$ remains concentrated on a small range of values even if $G$ is an inhomogeneous random graph. Furthermore, we give an explicit ex…
We investigate the growth of clusters within the forest fire model of Ráth and Tóth [22]. The model is a continuous-time Markov process, similar to the dynamical Erdős-Rényi random graph but with the addition of so-called fires. A vertex may catch fire at any moment and, when it does so, causes all edges within its connected cluster to burn, meaning that they instantaneously disappear. Each burned edge may later reappear. We give a precise description of the process $C_t$ of the size of the cluster of a tagged vertex, in the limit as the number of vertices in the model tends to infinity. We sh…
We analyze the component evolution in inhomogeneous random intersection graphs when the average degree is close to 1. As the average degree increases, the size of the largest component in the random intersection graph goes through a phase transition. We give bounds on the size of the largest components before and after this transition. We also prove that the largest component after the transition is unique. These results are similar to the phase transition in Erdős-Rényi random graphs; one notable difference is that the jump in the size of the largest component varies in size depending on the …
Mean-field frozen percolation is a random graph-valued process, which adjusts the dynamics of the classical Erdos-Renyi process with an additional mechanism to 'freeze' potential giant components before they can form. It is known to exhibit self-organised criticality from a wide class of initial graphs. We show that a family of inhomogeneous random graphs with finitely-many types form a stable class under these dynamics. We study how the survival of a vertex depends on its initial type, and establish a hydrodynamic limit for the process recording surviving vertices of each type, in terms of mu…
We identify the asymptotic distribution of $p$-rank of the sandpile group of a random directed bipartite graphs which are not too imbalanced. We show this matches exactly that of the Erd{ö}s-R{é}nyi random directed graph model, suggesting the Sylow $p$-subgroups of this model may also be Cohen-Lenstra distributed. Our work builds on results of Koplewitz who studied $p$-rank distributions for unbalanced random bipartite graphs, and showed that for sufficiently unbalanced graphs, the distribution of $p$-rank differs from the Cohen-Lenstra distribution. Koplewitz \cite{K} conjectured that for ran…
We study a family of directed random graphs whose arcs are sampled independently of each other, and are present in the graph with a probability that depends on the attributes of the vertices involved. In particular, this family of models includes as special cases the directed versions of the Erdos-Renyi model, graphs with given expected degrees, the generalized random graph, and the Poissonian random graph. We establish the phase transition for the existence of a giant strongly connected component and provide some other basic properties, including the limiting joint distribution of the degrees…
Recently, the scaling limit of cluster sizes for critical inhomogeneous random graphs of rank-1 type having finite variance but infinite third moment degrees was obtained (see previous work by Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and van Leeuwaarden). It was proved that when the degrees obey a power law with exponent in the interval (3,4), the sequence of clusters ordered in decreasing size and scaled appropriately converges as n goes to infinity to a sequence of decreasing non-degenerate random variables. Here, we study the tails of the limit of the rescaled largest cluster, i.e., the probability that th…
We investigate first passage percolation on inhomogeneous random graphs. The random graph model G(n,kappa) we study is the model introduced by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan, where each vertex has a type from a type space S and edge probabilities are independent, but depending on the types of the end vertices. Each edge is given an independent exponential weight. We determine the distribution of the weight of the shortest path between uniformly chosen vertices in the giant component and show that the hopcount, i.e. the number of edges on this minimal weight path, properly normalized follows a ce…
The aim of the paper is to address the behavior in large population of diffusions interacting on a random, possibly diluted and inhomogeneous graph. This is the natural continuation of a previous work, where the homogeneous Erd\H os-Rényi case was considered. The class of graphs we consider includes disordered $W$-random graphs, with possibly unbounded graphons. The main result concerns a quenched convergence (that is true for almost every realization of the random graph) of the empirical measure of the system towards the solution of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck PDE with spatial extension, also a…
A wide array of random graph models have been postulated to understand properties of observed networks. Typically these models have a parameter $t$ and a critical time $t_c$ when a giant component emerges. It is conjectured that for a large class of models, the nature of this emergence is similar to that of the Erdős-Rényi random graph, in the sense that (a) the sizes of the maximal components in the critical regime scale like $n^{2/3}$, and (b) the structure of the maximal components at criticality (rescaled by $n^{-1/3}$) converges to random fractals. To date, (a) has been proven for a numbe…
Motivated by limits of critical inhomogeneous random graphs, we construct a family of sequences of measured metric spaces that we call continuous multiplicative graphs, that are expected to be the universal limit of graphs related to the multiplicative coalescent (the Erdős--Rényi random graph, more generally the so-called rank-one inhomogeneous random graphs of various types, and the configuration model). At the discrete level, the construction relies on a new point of view on (discrete) inhomogeneous random graphs that involves an embedding into a Galton--Watson forest. The new representatio…
We consider a natural model of inhomogeneous random graphs that extends the classical Erd\H os-Rényi graphs and shares a close connection with the multiplicative coalescence, as pointed out by Aldous [AOP 1997]. In this model, the vertices are assigned weights that govern their tendency to form edges. It is by looking at the asymptotic distributions of the masses (sum of the weights) of the connected components of these graphs that Aldous and Limic [EJP 1998] have identified the entrance boundary of the multiplicative coalescence, which is intimately related to the excursion lengths of certain…
We consider secure and reliable connectivity in wireless sensor networks that utilize a heterogeneous random key predistribution scheme. We model the unreliability of wireless links by an on-off channel model that induces an Erdős-Rényi graph, while the heterogeneous scheme induces an inhomogeneous random key graph. The overall network can thus be modeled by the intersection of both graphs. We present conditions (in the form of zero-one laws) on how to scale the parameters of the intersection model so that with high probability i) all of its nodes are connected to at least $k$ other nodes; i.e…
In the theory of dense graph limits, a graphon is a symmetric measurable function $W:[0,1]^2\to [0,1]$. Each graphon gives rise naturally to a random graph distribution, denoted $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$, that can be viewed as a generalization of the Erdős-Rényi random graph. Recently, Doležal, Hladký, and Máthé gave an asymptotic formula of order $\log n$ for the clique number of $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$ when $W$ is bounded away from 0 and 1. We show that if $W$ is allowed to approach 1 at a finite number of points, and displays a moderate rate of growth near these points, then the clique number of $\mathbb…
We find scaling limits for the sizes of the largest components at criticality for rank-1 inhomogeneous random graphs with power-law degrees with power-law exponent τ. We investigate the case where $τ\in(3,4)$, so that the degrees have finite variance but infinite third moment. The sizes of the largest clusters, rescaled by $n^{-(τ-2)/(τ-1)}$, converge to hitting times of a "thinned" Lévy process, a special case of the general multiplicative coalescents studied by Aldous [Ann. Probab. 25 (1997) 812-854] and Aldous and Limic [Electron. J. Probab. 3 (1998) 1-59]. Our results should be contrasted …
We apply here methods of inhomogeneous random graphs to a class of random distance graphs. This provides an example outside of the rank 1 models which is still solvable as long as the largest connected component is concerned. In particular, we show that some random distance graphs behave exactly as the classical Erdős-Rényi model not only in the supercritical phase (as was already known) but in the subcritical case as well.
We study the typical behavior of a generalized version of Google's PageRank algorithm on a large family of inhomogeneous random digraphs. This family includes as special cases directed versions of classical models such as the Erdös-Rényi model, the Chung-Lu model, the Poissonian random graph and the generalized random graph, and is suitable for modeling scale-free directed complex networks where the number of neighbors a vertex has is related to its attributes. In particular, we show that the rank of a randomly chosen node in a graph from this family converges weakly to the attracting endogeno…
Consider the upper tail probability that the homomorphism count of a fixed graph $H$ within a large sparse random graph $G_n$ exceeds its expected value by a fixed factor $1+δ$. Going beyond the Erdős-Rényi model, we establish here explicit, sharp upper tail decay rates for sparse random $d_n$-regular graphs (provided $H$ has a regular $2$-core), and for sparse uniform random graphs. We further deal with joint upper tail probabilities for homomorphism counts of multiple graphs $H_1,\ldots, H_k$ (extending the known results for $k=1$), and for inhomogeneous graph ensembles (such as the stochast…
We consider wireless sensor networks under a heterogeneous random key predistribution scheme and an on-off channel model. The heterogeneous key predistribution scheme has recently been introduced by Yağan - as an extension to the Eschenauer and Gligor scheme - for the cases when the network consists of sensor nodes with varying level of resources and/or connectivity requirements, e.g., regular nodes vs. cluster heads. The network is modeled by the intersection of the inhomogeneous random key graph (induced by the heterogeneous scheme) with an Erdős-Rényi graph (induced by the on/off channel mo…
In the classical Erdös-Rényi random graph G(n,p) there are n vertices and each of the possible edges is independently present with probability p. The random graph G(n,p) is homogeneous in the sense that all vertices have the same characteristics. On the other hand, numerous real-world networks are inhomogeneous in this respect. Such an inhomogeneity of vertices may influence the connection probability between pairs of vertices. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new inhomogeneous random graph model which is obtained in a constructive way from the Erdös-Rényi random graph G(n,p). Given a…
We establish bounds on the spectral radii for a large class of sparse random matrices, which includes the adjacency matrices of inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi graphs. Our error bounds are sharp for a large class of sparse random matrices. In particular, for the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(n,d/n)$, our results imply that the smallest and second-largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix converge to the edges of the support of the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution provided that $d \gg \log n$. Together with the companion paper [3], where we analyse the extreme eigenvalues in the complementary regime $d \l…

Motivated by applications, the last few years have witnessed tremendous interest in understanding the structure as well as the behavior of dynamics for inhomogeneous random graph models. In this study we analyze the maximal components at criticality of one famous class of such models, the rank-one inhomogeneous random graph model. Viewing these components as measured random metric spaces, under finite moment assumptions for the weight distribution, we show that the components in the critical scaling window with distances scaled by $n^{-1/3}$ converge in the Gromov-Haussdorf-Prokhorov metric to…
We study the critical behavior of inhomogeneous random graphs where edges are present independently but with unequal edge occupation probabilities. The edge probabilities are moderated by vertex weights, and are such that the degree of vertex i is close in distribution to a Poisson random variable with parameter w_i, where w_i denotes the weight of vertex i. We choose the weights such that the weight of a uniformly chosen vertex converges in distribution to a limiting random variable W, in which case the proportion of vertices with degree k is close to the probability that a Poisson random var…
Building on the inequalities for homogeneous tetrahedral polynomials in independent Gaussian variables due to R. Latała we provide a concentration inequality for non-necessarily Lipschitz functions $f\colon \R^n \to \R$ with bounded derivatives of higher orders, which hold when the underlying measure satisfies a family of Sobolev type inequalities $\|g- \E g\|_p \le C(p)\|\nabla g\|_p.$ Such Sobolev type inequalities hold, e.g., if the underlying measure satisfies the log-Sobolev inequality (in which case $C(p) \le C\sqrt{p}$) or the Poincaré inequality (then $C(p) \le Cp$). Our concentration …
