Plasma in the earth's magnetosphere is subjected to compression during geomagnetically active periods and relaxation in subsequent quiet times. Repeated compression and relaxation is the origin of much of the plasma dynamics and intermittency in the near-earth environment. An observable manifestation of compression is the thinning of the plasma sheet resulting in magnetic reconnection when the solar wind mass, energy, and momentum floods into the magnetosphere culminating in the spectacular auroral display. This phenomenon is rich in physics at all scale sizes, which are causally interconnected. This poses a formidable challenge in accurately modeling the physics. The large-scale processes are fluid-like and are reasonably well captured in the global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models, but those in the smaller scales responsible for dissipation and relaxation that feed back to the larger scale dynamics are often in the kinetic regime. The self-consistent generation of the small-scale processes and their feedback to the global plasma dynamics remains to be fully explored. Plasma compression can lead to the generation of electromagnetic fields that distort the particle orbits and introduce new features beyond the purview of the MHD framework, such as ambipolar electric fields, unequal plasma drifts and currents among species, strong spatial and velocity gradients in gyroscale layers separating plasmas of different characteristics, \textit{etc.} These boundary layers are regions of intense activity characterized by emissions that are measurable. We study the behavior of such compressed plasmas and discuss the relaxation mechanisms to understand their measurable signatures as well as their feedback to influence the global scale plasma evolution.
Experimental results for the reflection coefficient of shock-compressed dense Xenon plasmas at pressures of 1.6 - 17 GPa and temperatures around 30 000 K using a laser beam with λ= 1.06 10^-6 m are compared with calculations based on different theoretical approaches to the dynamical collision frequency. It is found that a reasonable description can be given assuming a spatial electron density profile corresponding to a finite width of the shock wave front of about $2 10^-6 m.
Non-modal kinetic theory of the stability of the compressed-sheared plasma flows generated by the inhomogeneous microscale turbulence in the tokamak edge plasma
The collective motion of dust particles during the mode-coupling induced melting of a two-dimensional plasma crystal is explored in molecular dynamics simulations. The crystal is compressed horizontally by an anisotropic confinement. This compression leads to an asymmetric triggering of the mode-coupling instability which is accompanied by alternating chains of in-phase and anti-phase oscillating particles. A new order parameter is proposed to quantify the synchronization with respect to different directions of the crystal. Depending on the orientation of the confinement anisotropy, mode-coupl…
Compressed Ultrafast Photography of Plasmas Formed from Laser Breakdown of Dense Gases Reveals that Internal Processes Dominate Evolution at Early Times
Magnetothermodynamics (MTD) is the study of compression and expansion of magnetized plasma with an eye towards identifying equations of state for magneto-inertial fusion experiments. We present recent results from SSX experiments on the thermodynamics of compressed magnetized plasmas. In these experiments, we generate twisted flux ropes of magnetized, relaxed plasma accelerated from one end of a $1.5~m$ long copper flux conserver, and observe their compression in a closed conducting boundary installed at the other end. Plasma parameters are measured during compression. The instances of ion hea…
We have explored the thermodynamics of compressed magnetized plasmas in laboratory experiments and we call these studies "magnetothermodynamics". The experiments are carried out in the Swarthmore Spheromak eXperiment device. In this device, a magnetized plasma source is located at one end and at the other end, a closed conducting can is installed. We generate parcels of magnetized plasma and observe their compression against the end wall of the conducting cylinder. The plasma parameters such as plasma density, temperature, and magnetic field are measured during compression using HeNe laser int…
The design of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition targets requires radiation-hydrodynamics simulations with accurate models of the fundamental material properties (i.e., equation of state, opacity, and conductivity). Validation of these models are required via experimentation. A feasibility study of using spatially-integrated, spectrally-resolved, X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) measurements to diagnose the temperature, density, and ionization of the compressed DT shell and hot spot of a laser direct-drive implosion at two-thirds convergence was conducted. Synthetic scattering spectra w…
The problem of calculation of the reflectivity of non-ideal shock-compressed plasmas is revisited. The dielectric formalism based on the method of moments incorporating exact asymptotic forms and sum rules is applied to the new experimental data. The approach is based on the Ansatz of reflection of laser radiation from a thin shock-front and possesses one adjustable parameter which depends only on the thermodynamic conditions of the experiment. A self-consistent agreement with all available experimental data is achieved.
We investigate the formation of collisionless magnetized shocks triggered by the interaction between magnetized plasma flows and miniature-sized (order of plasma kinetic-scales) magnetic obstacles resorting to massively parallel, full particle-in-cell simulations, including the electron kinetics. The critical obstacle size to generate a compressed plasma region ahead of these objects is determined by independently varying the magnitude of the dipolar magnetic moment and the plasma magnetization. We find that the effective size of the obstacle depends on the relative orientation between the dip…
A novel magnetic confined fusion scheme for the fusion reactor is proposed in this paper. A simple numerical estimation shows that ignition of D-T plasma can be achieved in tokamak with only OH heating by major and minor radius adiabatic compression. The density and temperature of compressed plasma can reach 1-3*10^22/m^3 and 15-25keV, respectively. Alternating current with adiabatic compression pulse of ACACT with R0 = 1.8m can deliver 400MW fusion power.
Rutherford scattering formula plays an important role in plasma classical transport. It is urgent to need a magnetized Rutherford scattering formula since the magnetic field increases significantly in different fusion areas (e.g. tokamak magnetic field, self-generated magnetic field, and compressed magnetic field). The electron-ion Coulomb collisions perpendicular to the external magnetic field are studied in this paper. The scattering angle is defined according to the electron trajectory and asymptotic line (without magnetic field). A magnetized Rutherford scattering formula is obtained analy…
Equilibrating gravitation by electric forces, microparticles can be confined in the plasma sheath above suitably biased local electrodes.Their position depends on the detailed structure of the plasma sheath and on the charge that the particles acquire in the surrounding plasma, that is by the electron and ion currents towards it. Bias switching experiments reveal how the charge and equilibrium position of the microparticle change upon altered sheath conditions. We observe similar particle behaviors also in the afterglow of the discharge for a persisting bias voltage on the electrode: damped os…
The laser induced plasma in liquid hasn't been studied enough. In liquid, the laser induced plasma may be able to resolve the hazardous material called the environment material. Then, the plasma produced in liquid by the laser light is studied and the plasma development is observed by a streak camera. The ultra pure water or the ultra pure water with a melted NaCl is used as a test liquid. The liquid plasma is produced by the fundamental wave of YAG laser. When NaCl concentration is varied, the plasma development behavior is obserbed by streak camera. The liquid plasma develops backward. The p…
We describe a laboratory plasma physics experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory that uses two merging supersonic plasma jets formed and launched by pulsed-power-driven rail guns. The jets can be formed using any atomic species or mixture available in a compressed-gas bottle and have the following nominal initial parameters at the railgun nozzle exit: $n_e\approx n_i \sim 10^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$, $T_e \approx T_i \approx 1.4$ eV, $V_{\rm jet}\approx 30$-100 km/s, mean charge $\bar{Z}\approx 1$, sonic Mach number $M_s\equiv V_{\rm jet}/C_s>10$, jet diameter $=5$ cm, and jet length $\approx 20$ c…
The strong-coupling mode, called quasimode, will be excited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in high-intensity laser-plasma interaction. And SBS of quasimode will compete with SBS of fast mode (or slow mode) in multi-ion species plasmas, thus leading to a low-frequency burst behavior of SBS reflectivity. The competition of quasimode and ion-acoustic wave (IAW) is an important saturation mechanism of SBS in high-intensity laser-plasma interaction. These results give a clear explanation to the low-frequency periodic burst behavior of SBS and should be considered as a saturation mechanism…
Plasma is an attractive medium for generating strong microscopic magnetic structures and tunable electromagnetic radiation with predictable topologies due to its extraordinary ability to sustain and manipulate high currents and strong fields. Here, using theory and simulations, we show efficient generation of multi-megagauss magnetic and tunable optical vortices when a sharp relativistic ionization front (IF) passes through a relatively long-wavelength Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser pulse with orbital angular momentum (OAM). The optical vortex is frequency upshifted within a wide spectral range …
We create streaming ultracold neutral plasmas by tailoring the photoionizing laser beam that creates the plasma. By varying the electron temperature, we control the relative velocity of the streaming populations, and, in conjunction with variation of the plasma density, this controls the ion collisionality of the colliding streams. Laser-induced fluorescence is used to map the spatially resolved density and velocity distribution function for the ions. We identify the lack of local thermal equilibrium and distinct populations of interpenetrating, counter-streaming ions as signatures of kinetic …
Author offers conclusions from his research of a revolutionary new idea - transferring electric energy in the hard vacuum of outer space wirelessly, using a plasma power cord as an electric cable (wire). He shows that a certain minimal electric currency creates a compressed force that supports the plasma cable in the compacted form. A large energy can be transferred hundreds of millions of kilometers by this method. The required mass of the plasma cable is only hundreds of grams. He computed the macroprojects: transference of hundreds kilowatts of energy to Earth Space Station, transferring en…
Recent developments of dynamic x-ray characterization experiments of dense matter are reviewed, with particular emphasis on conditions relevant to interiors of terrestrial and gas giant planets. These studies include characterization of compressed states of matter in light elements by x-ray scattering and imaging of shocked iron by radiography. Several applications of this work are examined. These include the structure of massive "Super Earth" terrestrial planets around other stars, the 40 known extrasolar gas giants with measured masses and radii, and Jupiter itself, which serves as the bench…
Microwave sheath-Voltage combination Plasma (MVP) is a high density plasma source and can be used as a suitable plasma processing device (e.g., ionized physical vapor deposition). In the present report, the temporal behavior of an argon MVP sustained along a direct-current biased Ti rod is investigated. Two plasma modes are observed, one is an "oxidized state" (OS) at the early time of the microwave plasma and the other is "ionized sputter state" (ISS) at the later times. Transition of the plasma from OS to ISS, results a prominent change in the visible color of the plasma, resulting from a si…
We propose a new method for laser pulse compression that uses the spatially varying dispersion of a plasma plume with a density gradient. This novel scheme can be used to compress ultrahigh power lasers. A long, negatively frequency-chirped, laser pulse reflects off the plasma ramp of an over-dense plasma. As the density increases longitudinally the high frequency photons at the leading part of the laser pulse propagates more deeply than low frequency photons, the pulse is compressed in a similar way to compression off a chirped mirror. Proof-of-principle simulations, using a one-dimensional (…
Dependencies of levitation position of positively charged fine-particles on plasma parameters are investigated. The charges on the particles become positive in a cross-field sheath between magnetized double plasmas with different potentials separated vertically by horizontal magnetic field, because ion current flowing from a lower high-potential plasma surpasses electron current coming across the magnetic field from an upper low-potential plasma. From measurement of the resonance frequency of the particles driven by external oscillating electric field, the charge on particle is estimated to be…
A relativistic petawatt laser light can heat heavy metals over keV temperature isochorically and ionize them almost fully. Copious hard X-rays are emitted from the high-Z hot plasma which acts as X-ray sources, while they work as a cooling process of the plasma. The cooling process can affect on the creation of high energy density plasma via the interaction, however, the details are unknown. The X-ray spectrum depends on the plasma temperature, so that it is worthwhile to investigate the radiation cooling effects. We here study the isochoric heating of a solid silver foil irradiated by relativ…
To indirectly evaluate the asymmetry of the radiation drive under limited measurement conditions in inertial confinement fusion research, we have proposed an integral method to approximate the three-dimensional self-radiation distribution of the compressed plasma core using only four pinhole images from a single laser entrance hole at a maximum projection angle of 10°. The simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) that uses spatial constraints provided by the prior structural information and the central pinhole image is utilized in the simulation. The simulation results showed tha…
Two new forms of strongly coupled plasmas will be discussed. They have become possible to create and observe in the laboratory only recently and exhibit a wealth of intriguing complex behavior which can be studied, in many cases for the first time, experimentally. Plasmas, gases of charged particles, are universal in the sense that certain properties of complex behavior do only depend on ratios of characteristic parameters of the plasma, not on the parameters themselves. Therefore, it is of fundamental and far reaching consequence, to be able to create and observe a strongly coupled plasma sin…
We conduct a multiparametric study of driven magnetic reconnection relevant to recent experiments on colliding magnetized laser produced plasmas using particle-in-cell simulations. Varying the background plasma density, plasma resistivity, and plasma bubble geometry, the 2D simulations demonstrate a rich variety of reconnection behavior and show the coupling between magnetic reconnection and the global hydrodynamical evolution of the system. We consider both the collision between two radially expanding bubbles where reconnection is seeded by the pre-existing X-point, and the collision between …
In this paper, we consider the generation of magnetic island for the linearized MHD equations around the steady flowing plasma with velocity field $U_s=(u(y),0)$ and magnetic field $H_s=(b(y),0)$ in the finite channel.
Beam emission spectroscopy (BES) is a powerful plasma diagnostic method especially suited for the measurement of plasma density and its fluctuations. As such, synthetic BES codes are regularly used to aid the design or utilization of these diagnostic systems. However, synthetic diagnostics can also be used to study the method in previously not yet explored operational conditions. This paper presents such an analysis utilizing the RENATE-OD synthetic diagnostic code for a hypothetical alkali BES system on the HSX stellarator. HSX is a device featuring an unusual operating regime in the world of…
We present a simple model for the turbulent kinetic energy behavior of subsonic plasma turbulence undergoing isotropic three-dimensional compression, such as may exist in various inertial confinement fusion experiments or astrophysical settings. The plasma viscosity depends on both the temperature and the ionization state, for which many possible scalings with compression are possible. For example, in an adiabatic compression the temperature scales as $1/L^2$, with $L$ the linear compression ratio, but if thermal energy loss mechanisms are accounted for, the temperature scaling may be weaker. …
We present complete experimental characterisation of the temporal shape of an intense ultrashort 200-TW laser pulse driving a laser wakefield. The phase of the pulse was uniquely measured using (second order) frequency resolved optical gating (FROG). The pulses are asymmetrically compressed, and exhibit a positive chirp consistent with the expected asymmetric self-phase modulation due to photon acceleration/deceleration in a relativistic plasma wave. The measured pulse duration decreases linearly with increasing length and density of the plasma, in quantitative agreement with the intensity dep…
The presence of multiple ion species can add additional branches to the IAW dispersion relation and change the Landau damping significantly. Different IAW modes excited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and different SBS behaviors in several typical ignition hohlraum plasmas in the high-temperature and high-density region have been researched by Vlasov-Maxwell simulation. The slow mode in HeH or CH plasmas is the least damped mode and will be excited in SBS, while the fast mode in AuB plasmas is the least damped mode and will be excited in SBS. Due to strong Landau damping, the SBS in H…
Kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) are the short-wavelength extension of the MHD Alfvén-wave branch in the case of highly-oblique propagation with respect to the background magnetic field. Observations of space plasma show that small-scale turbulence is mainly KAW-like. We apply two theoretical approaches, collisional two-fluid theory and collisionless kinetic theory, to obtain predictions for the KAW polarizations depending on $β_\mathrm{p}$ (the ratio of the proton thermal pressure to the magnetic pressure) at the ion gyroscale in terms of fluctuations in density, bulk velocity, and pressure. We pe…
In a laboratory, a two-dimensional complex (dusty) plasma consists of a low-density ionized gas containing a confined suspension of Yukawa-coupled plastic microspheres. For an initial crystal-like form, we report ideal gas behavior in this strongly-coupled system during shock-wave experiments. This evidence supports the use of the ideal gas law as the equation of state for soft crystals such as those formed by dusty plasmas.
We consider a low-temperature plasma within a newly developed MHD Fluid model. In addition to the standard terms, the electron spin, quantum particle dispersion and degeneracy effects are included. It turns out that the electron spin properties can give rise to Ferromagnetic behavior in certain regimes. If additional conditions are fulfilled, a homogenous magnetized plasma can even be unstable. This happen in the low-temperature high-density regime, when the magnetic properties associated with the spin can overcome the stabilizing effects of the thermal and Fermi pressure, to cause a Jeans lik…
The semiclassical dynamics of a charged particle moving in a two-component plasma is considered using a corrected Kelbg pseudopotential. We employ the classical Nevanlinna-type theory of frequency moments to determine the velocity and force autocorrelation functions. The constructed expressions preserve the exact short and long-time behavior of the autocorrelators. The short-time behavior is characterized by two parameters which are expressable through the plasma static correlation functions. The long-time behavior is determined by the self-diffusion coefficient. The theoretical predictions ar…
Relativistic electromagnetic penetration behavior is reexamined in the relativistic transparency region. The interaction is modeled by the relativistic hydrodynamic equations coupled with the full system of Maxwell equations, which are solved by a fully implicit energy-conserving numerical scheme. For the first time, we have studied the penetration behavior through ultra-short circularly polarized and linearly polarized laser pulses interaction with over-dense plasmas. It is shown that for the ultra-short circularly polarized laser penetration occurs through a soliton like behavior, which is q…
We construct a model for the turbulence near the X-point of a Tokamak device and, under suitable assumptions, we arrive to a closed equation for the electric field potential fluctuations. The analytical and numerical analysis is focused on a reduced two-dimensional formulation of the dynamics, which allows a direct mapping to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The main merit of this study is to outline how the turbulence near the X-point, in correspondence to typical operation conditions of medium and large size Tokamaks, is dominated by the enstrophy cascade from large to smaller spat…
A qualitative theoretical approach is proposed for the study of fast ion behavior in tokamak plasmas with a current hole. For the equilibrium magnetic configuration in a current hole tokamak we employ a simplified model based on an analytical approximation of the poloidal flux function shape. For that the radial extent of the plasma core area with zero rotational transform is used as a characteristic parameter. The modification of the fast ion orbit topology, as caused by the current hole, is studied. The model yields manageable analytical expressions describing completely the current hole eff…
The comparative analysis of the results of experimental investigations of the processes of formation, interaction and dynamics of vortex structures in pure electron and gas-discharge electron nonneutral plasmas taking place for the period of time much less than the electron-neutral collision time has been given. The general processes of formation and behavior of vortex structures in these two plasmas were considered. The phenomena, taking place only in one of these plasmas were also considered. It is shown that the existing difference in behavior of vortex structures is caused by different ini…
Charge state distributions of various projectile ions passing through thin carbon foils have been studied in the energy range of 0.7-3.0 MeV/u using x-ray spectroscopy. This technique is found to be appropriate to segregate the charge state distribution in the bulk from that of the surface by measuring the charge changing phenomena right at the interaction zone i.e. at t=0. This observation has been confirmed by different theoretical approaches. Surprisingly, it is found that the charge state distribution measured in the bulk, exhibits Lorentzian profile which is an important characteristic of…
The influence of charge trap states in the dielectric boundary material on capacitively coupled radio frequency plasma discharge is investigated with theory and Particle in cell/Monte Carlo Collision simulation. It is found that the trap states of the wall material manipulated discharge properties mainly through the varying ion induced secondary electron emission (SEE) coefficient in response to dynamic surface charges accumulated within solid boundary. A comprehensive SEE model considering surface charging is established first, which incorporates the valence band electron distribution, electr…
We present a new experimental method to generate quasi-perpendicular supercritical magnetized collisionless shocks. In our experiment, ambient nitrogen (N) plasma is at rest and well-magnetized, and it has uniform mass density. The plasma is pushed by laser-driven ablation aluminum (Al) plasma. Streaked optical pyrometry and spatially resolved laser collective Thomson scattering clarify structures of plasma density and temperatures, which are compared with one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is indicated that just after the laser irradiation, the Al plasma is magnetized by a self-…
We have numerically studied the evolution of the heavy ions that expand in a cold background plasma at a large scale. Two typical collective behaviors of the heavy ions are identified with the conditions where only the traversing heavy ion's initial total mass is different. Our work has demonstrated that a difference in the initial total mass of the moving heavy ions is able to induce completely different collective behaviors of the plasma. The simulation is performed via the hybrid model, in which the ions and electrons are treated as classical particles and mass-less fluid, respectively. Due…
Using direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence the spatio-temporal behavior of magnetic field fluctuations is analyzed. Cases with relatively small, medium and large values of a mean background magnetic field are considered. The (wavenumber) scale dependent time correlation function is directly computed for different simulations, varying the mean magnetic field value. From this correlation function the time decorrelation is computed and compared with different theoretical times, namely, the local non-linear time, the random sweeping time, and the A…
In this work, dynamics of multi-charged ions emitted from an aluminum plasma produced by Q switched Nd: Yag laser is studied using time of flight (TOF) measurements from Langmuir Probe (LP) and spectroscopy (STOF) under Ar ambient of 0.02 mbar. The temporal evolution of multi-charged ions, background neutrals and ions is systematically studied for varying laser intensities. The temporal evolution shows all the species have double peak structure for all the laser intensities considered in the study. The fast peak is sharp whereas the slow peak is broad similar to that observed in previous studi…
We calculate the drag and diffusion coefficients in low temperature QED plasma and go beyond the leading order approximation. The non-Fermi-liquid behavior of these coefficients are clearly revealed. We observe that the subleading contributions due to the exchange of soft transverse photon in both cases are larger than the leading order terms coming from the longitudinal sector. The results are presented in closed form at zero and low temperature.
