We introduce a method of solving inverse boundary value problems for wave equations on Lorentzian manifolds, and show that zeroth order coefficients can be recovered under certain curvature bounds. The set of Lorentzian metrics satisfying the curvature bounds has a non-empty interior in the sense of arbitrary, smooth perturbations of the metric, whereas all previous results on this problem impose conditions on the metric that force it to be real analytic with respect to a suitably defined time variable. The analogous problem on Riemannian manifolds is called the Calderón problem, and in this case the known results require the metric to be independent of one of the variables. Our approach is based on a new unique continuation result in the exterior of the double null cone emanating from a point. The approach shares features with the classical Boundary Control method, and can be viewed as a generalization of this method to cases where no real analyticity is assumed.
We consider Schrödinger operators at a fixed high frequency on simply connected compact Riemannian manifolds with non-positive sectional curvatures and smooth strictly convex boundaries. We prove that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map uniquely determines the potential.
We construct, for $p>n$, a concrete example of a complete non-compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold of positive sectional curvature which does not support any $L^p$-Calderón-Zygmund inequality: \[ \forall\,φ\in C^{\infty}_c(M),\qquad\|\operatorname{Hess} φ\|_{L^p}\le C(\|φ\|_{L^p}+\|Δφ\|_{L^p}). \] The proof proceeds by local deformations of an initial metric which (locally) Gromov-Hausdorff converge to an Alexandrov space. In particular, we develop on some recent interesting ideas by G. De Philippis and J. Núñez-Zimbron dealing with the case of compact manifolds. As a straightforward co…
We consider pointed Lorentzian manifolds and construct "canonical" foliations by constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces. Our result assumes a uniform bound on the local sup-norm of the curvature of the manifold and on its local injectivity radius, only. The prescribed curvature problem under consideration is a nonlinear elliptic equation whose coefficients have limited regularity. The CMC foliation allows us to introduce CMC-harmonic coordinates, in which the coefficients of the Lorentzian metric have optimal regularity.
We obtain Harnack estimates for a class of curvature flows in Riemannian manifolds of constant non-negative sectional curvature as well as in the Lorentzian Minkowski and de Sitter spaces. Furthermore, we prove a Harnack estimate with a bonus term for mean curvature flow in locally symmetric Riemannian Einstein manifold of non-negative sectional curvature. Using a concept of "duality" for strictly convex hypersurfaces, we also obtain a new type of inequalities, so-called "pseudo"-Harnack inequalities, for expanding flows in the sphere and in the hyperbolic space.
Being motivated by the problem of deducing $L^p$-bounds on the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion from $L^p$-bounds on its mean curvature vector field, we prove a (nonlinear) Calderón-Zygmund inequality for maps between complete (possibly noncompact) Riemannian manifolds.
We are concerned with the Calderón inverse inclusion problem, where one intends to recover the shape of an inhomogeneous conductive inclusion embedded in a homogeneous conductivity by the associated boundary measurements. We consider the highly challenging case with a single partial boundary measurement, which constitutes a long-standing open problem in the literature. It is shown in several existing works that corner singularities can help to resolve the uniqueness and stability issues for this inverse problem. In this paper, we show that the corner singularity can be relaxed to be a certain …
We review recent work on the local geometry and optimal regularity of Lorentzian manifolds with bounded curvature. Our main results provide an estimate of the injectivity radius of an observer, and a local canonical foliations by CMC (Constant Mean Curvature) hypersurfaces, together with spatially harmonic coordinates. In contrast with earlier results based on a global bound for derivatives of the curvature, our method requires only a sup-norm bound on the curvature near the given observer.
We consider an asymptotically flat Lorentzian manifold of dimension (1,3). An inequality is derived which bounds the Riemannian curvature tensor in terms of the ADM energy in the general case with second fundamental form. The inequality quantifies in which sense the Lorentzian manifold becomes flat in the limit when the ADM energy tends to zero.
We study the motion of an $n$-dimensional closed spacelike hypersurface in a Lorentzian manifold in the direction of its past directed normal vector, where the speed equals a positive power $p$ of the mean curvature. We prove that for any $p\in (0,1]$, the flow exists for all time when the Ricci tensor of the ambient space is bounded from below on the set of timelike unit vectors. Moreover, if we assume that all envolving hypersurfaces stay in a precompact region, then the flow converges to a stationary maximum spacelike hypersurface.
Starting from the Hawking--Page solutions, we consider the corresponding Lorentzian cone metrics. These represent cone interior scale-invariant vacuum solutions, defined in the chronological past of the scaling origin. We extend the Lorentzian Hawking--Page solutions to the cone exterior region in the class of $(4+1)$-dimensional scale-invariant vacuum solutions with an $SO(3)\times U(1)$ isometry, using the Kaluza--Klein reduction and the methods of Christodoulou. We prove that each Lorentzian Hawking--Page solution has extensions with a null curvature singularity, extensions with a spacelike…
We compute the Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on the symmetric spaces M\timesΣ, where M is a simply connected n-dimensional Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold of constant curvature and Σis a simply connected Riemannian surface of constant curvature. Our approach is based on a generalization to the case of differential forms of the method of spherical means and on the use of Riesz distributions on manifolds. The radial part of the Green's function is governed by a fourth order analogue of the Heun equation.
We revisit the problem of prescribing negative Gauss curvature for graphs embedded in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ when $n\geq 2$. The problem reduces to solving a fully nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation that becomes hyperbolic in the case of negative curvature. We show that the linearization around a graph with Lorentzian Hessian can be written as a geometric wave equation for a suitable Lorentzian metric in dimensions $n\geq 3$. Using energy estimates for the linearized equation and a version of the Nash-Moser iteration, we show the local solvability for the fully nonlinear equation. Finally, we discuss …
This paper is a survey of some recent results on the validity and the failure of global $W^{2,p}$ regularity properties of smooth solutions of the Poisson equation $Δu = f$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. We review different methods developed to obtain a-priori $L^p$-Hessian estimates of the form $\| \Hess(u) \|_{L^p} \leq C_1 \| u \|_{L^p} + C_2 \| f \|_{L^p}$ under various geometric conditions on $M$ both in the case of real valued functions and for manifold valued maps. We also present explicit and somewhat implicit counterexamples showing that, in general, this integral inequali…
We study new examples of translating solitons of the mean curvature flow, especially in Minkowski space. We consider for this purpose manifolds admitting submersions and cohomegeneity one actions by isometries on suitable open subsets. This general setting also covers the classical Euclidean examples. As an application, we completely classify timelike, invariant translating solitons by rotations and boosts in Minkowski space.
In this paper we investigate the validity of first and second order $L^{p}$ estimates for the solutions of the Poisson equation depending on the geometry of the underlying manifold. We first present $L^{p}$ estimates of the gradient under the assumption that the Ricci tensor is lower bounded in a local integral sense and construct the first counterexample showing that they are false, in general, without curvature restrictions. Next, we obtain $L^p$ estimates for the second order Riesz transform (or, equivalently, the validity of $L^{p}$ Calderón--Zygmund inequalities) on the whole scale $1<p<+…
We study constant mean curvature Lorentzian hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^{1,d+1}$ from the point of view of its Cauchy problem. We completely classify the spherically symmetric solutions, which include among them a manifold isometric to the de Sitter space of general relativity. We show that the spherically symmetric solutions exhibit one of three (future) asymptotic behaviours: (i) finite time collapse (ii) convergence to a time-like cylinder isometric to some $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{S}^d$ and (iii) infinite expansion to the future converging asymptotically to a time translation of the de Si…
