We introduce heat engines working in the nano-regime that allow to extract a finite amount of deterministic work. We show that the efficiency of these cycles is strictly smaller than Carnot's, and we associate this difference with a fundamental irreversibility that is present in single-shot transformations. When fluctuations in the extracted work are allowed there is a trade-off between their size and the efficiency. As the size of fluctuations increases so does the efficiency, and optimal efficiency is recovered for unbounded fluctuations, while certain amount of deterministic work is drawn from the cycle. Finally, we show that if the working medium is composed by many particles, by creating an amount of correlations between the subsystems that scales logarithmically with their number, Carnot's efficiency can also be approached in the asymptotic limit along with deterministic work extraction.
There has been an increasing interest in the quantification of nearly deterministic work extraction from a finite number of copies of microscopic particles in finite time. This paradigm, so called single-shot epsilon-deterministic work extraction, considers processes with small failure probabilities. However, the resulting fluctuations in the extracted work entailed by this failure probability have not been studied before. In the standard thermodynamics paradigm fluctuation theorems are powerful tools to study fluctuating quantities. Given that standard fluctuation theorems are inadequate for …
The second law of thermodynamics uses change in free energy of macroscopic systems to set a bound on performed work. Ergotropy plays a similar role in microscopic scenarios, and is defined as the maximum amount of energy that can be extracted from a system by a unitary operation. In this analysis, we quantify how much ergotropy can be induced on a system as a result of system's interaction with a thermal bath, with a perspective of using it as a source of work performed by microscopic machines. We provide the fundamental bound on the amount of ergotropy which can be extracted from environment …
We propose a four level quantum heat engine in Otto cycle with a working substance of two spins subject to an external magnetic field and coupled to each other by a one-axis twisting spin squeezing nonlinear interaction. We calculate the positive work and the efficiency of the engine for different parameter regimes. In particular, we investigate the effects of quantum correlations at the end of the two isochoric processes of the Otto cycle, as measured by the entanglement of formation and quantum discord, on the work extraction and efficiency. The regimes where the quantum correlations could e…
The implementation and engineering of bright and coherent solid state quantum light sources is key for the realization of both on chip and remote quantum networks. Despite tremendous efforts for more than 15 years, the combination of these two key prerequisites in a single, potentially scalable device is a major challenge. Here, we report on the observation of bright and coherent single photon emission generated via pulsed, resonance fluorescence conditions from a single quantum dot (QD) deterministically centered in a micropillar cavity device via cryogenic optical lithography. The brightness…
We present tensor networks for feature extraction and refinement of classifier performance. These networks can be initialised deterministically and have the potential for implementation on near-term intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Feature extraction proceeds through a direct combination and compression of images amplitude-encoded over just $\log N_{\text{pixels}}$ qubits. Performance is refined using `Quantum Stacking', a deterministic method that can be applied to the predictions of any classifier regardless of structure, and implemented on NISQ devices using data re-uploading. The…

A new scenario for energy distribution, security and shareability is presented that assumes the availability of quantum information heat engines and a thermal bath. It is based on the convertibility between entropy and work in the presence of a thermal reservoir. Our approach to the informational content of physical systems that are distributed between users is complementary to the conventional perspective of quantum communication. The latter places the value on the unpredictable content of the transmitted quantum states, while our interest focuses on their certainty. Some well-known results i…
Many studies of quantum-size heat engines assume that the dynamics of an internal system is unitary and that the extracted work is equal to the energy loss of the internal system. Both assumptions, however, should be under scrutiny. In the present paper, we analyze quantum-scale heat engines, employing the measurement-based formulation of the work extraction recently introduced by Hayashi and Tajima~[arXiv:1504.06150]. We first demonstrate the inappropriateness of the unitary time evolution of the internal system (namely the first assumption above) using a simple two-level system; we show that…
A pair of two-level systems initially prepared in different thermal states and coupled to an external reversible work source, do not in general reach a common temperature at the end of a unitary work extraction process. We define an effective temperature for the final nonequilibrium but passive state of the bipartite quantum system and analyse its properties.
Efficiency Enhancement up to Unity in a Generalized Quantum Otto Engine: Comparative Analysis with Conventional Quantum Otto Engine Utilizing a Two-Qubit Heisenberg XXZ Chain
The essence of both classical and quantum engines is to extract useful energy (work) from stochastic energy sources, e.g. thermal baths. In Maxwell's demon engines, work extraction is assisted by a feedback control based on measurements performed by a demon, whose memory is erased at some nonzero energy cost. Here we propose a new type of quantum Maxwell's demon engine where work is directly extracted from the measurement channel, such that no heat bath is required. We show that in the Zeno regime of frequent measurements, memory erasure costs eventually vanish. Our findings provide a new para…
We report on the observation of bright emission of single photons under pulsed resonance fluorescence conditions from a single quantum dot (QD) in a micropillar cavity. The brightness of the QD fluorescence is greatly enhanced via the coupling to the fundamental mode of a micropillar, allowing us to determine a single photon extraction efficiency of $(20.7\pm0.8)~\%$ per linear polarization basis. This yields an overall extraction efficiency of $(41.4\pm1.5)~\%$ in our device. We observe the first Rabi-oscillation in a weakly coupled quantum dot-micropillar system under coherent pulsed optical…
Various engine types are thermodynamically equivalent in the quantum limit of small 'engine action'. Our previous derivation of the equivalence is restricted to Markovian heat baths and to implicit classical work repository (e.g., laser light in the semi-classical approximation). In this paper all the components, baths, batteries, and engine, are explicitly taken into account. To neatly treat non-Markovian dynamics we use mediating particles that function as a heat exchanger. We find that on top of the previously observed equivalence there is a higher degree of equivalence that cannot be achie…
We analyze an engine whose working fluid consists of a single quantum particle, paralleling Szilard's construction of a classical single-particle engine. Following his resolution of Maxwell's Second Law paradox using the latter, which turned on physically instantiating the demon (control subsystem), the quantum engine's design mirrors the classically-chaotic Szilard Map that operates a thermodynamic cycle of measurement, thermal-energy extraction, and memory reset. Focusing on the thermodynamic costs to observe and control the particle and comparing these in the quantum and classical limits, w…
Deterministic techniques enabling the implementation and engineering of bright and coherent solid-state quantum light sources are key for the reliable realization of a next generation of quantum devices. Such a technology, at best, should allow one to significantly scale up the number of implemented devices within a given processing time. In this work, we discuss a possible technology platform for such a scaling procedure, relying on the application of nanoscale quantum dot imaging to the pillar microcavity architecture, which promises to combine very high photon extraction efficiency and indi…
We show nanoscopic transmission microscopy, using a deterministic single particle source and compare the resulting images in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, with those of conventional Poissonian sources. Our source is realized by deterministic extraction of laser-cooled calcium ions from a Paul trap. Gating by the extraction event allows for the suppression of detector dark counts by six orders of magnitude. Using the Bayes experimental design method, the deterministic characteristics of this source are harnessed to maximize information gain, when imaging structures with a parametrizable trans…
Quantum theory is based on a mathematical structure totally different from conventional arithmetic. Due to the symmetric nature of bosonic particles, annihilation or creation of single particles translates a quantum state depending on how many bosons are already in the given quantum system. This proportionality results in a variety of non-classical features of quantum mechanics including the bosonic commutation relation. The annihilation and creation operations have recently been implemented in photonic systems. However, this feature of quantum mechanics does not preclude the possibility of re…
We consider a semi-classical heat engine with a $q$-deformed quantum oscillator working substance and classical thermal baths. We investigate the influence of the quantum statistical deformation parameter $q$ on the work and efficiency of the engine. In usual heat engines, a Hamiltonian parameter is varied during the work injection and extraction stages while the quantum statistical character of the working substance remains fixed. We point out that even if the Hamiltonian parameters are not changing, work can be harvested by quantum statistical changes of the working substance. Work extractio…
We propose deterministic realizations of nonlinear phase gates by repeating non-commuting Rabi interactions feasible between a harmonic oscillator and {\em only} a single two-level ancillary qubit. We show explicitly that the key nonclassical features of the states after the ideal cubic phase gate and the quartic phase gate are reproduced faithfully by the engineered operators. This theoretical proposal completes the universal set of operators in continuous variable quantum computation.
The theory of quantum thermodynamics predicts fundamental bounds on work extraction from quantum states. As these bounds are derived in a very general and abstract setting, it is unclear how relevant they are in an experimental context, where control is typically limited. Here we address this question by showing that optimal work extraction is possible for a realistic engine. The latter consists of a superconducting circuit, where a LC-resonator is coupled to a Josephson junction. The oscillator state fuels the engine, providing energy absorbed by Cooper pairs, thus producing work in the form …
The minimal-coupling quantum heat engine is a thermal machine consisting of an explicit energy storage system, heat baths, and a working body, which alternatively couples to subsystems through discrete strokes -- energy-conserving two-body quantum operations. Within this paradigm, we present a general framework of quantum thermodynamics, where a work extraction process is fundamentally limited by a flow of non-passive energy (ergotropy), while energy dissipation is expressed through a flow of passive energy. It turns out that small dimensionality of the working body and a restriction only to t…
The generation of photon pairs in single quantum dots is based on a process that is, in its nature, deterministic. However, an efficient extraction of these photon pairs from a high-index semiconductor host material requires engineering of the photonic environment. We report on a micropillar-based device featuring an extraction efficiency of 69.4(10)$\%$ that is achieved by harnessing a broadband operation suitable for extraction of photon pairs emitted from a single quantum dot. Opposing the approaches that rely solely on Purcell enhancement to realize the enhancement of the extraction effici…
In this paper I apply newly-proposed information-theoretic principles to thermodynamic work extraction. I show that if it is possible to extract work deterministically from a physical system prepared in any one of a set of states, then those states must be distinguishable from one another. This result is formulated independently of scale and of particular dynamical laws; it also provides a novel connection between thermodynamics and information theory, established via the law of conservation of energy (rather than the second law of thermodynamics). Albeit compatible with these conclusions, exi…
