This study is based on the use of the new ExoMol TiO rovibronic line lists to identify and model TiO isotopologue features in spectra of M-dwarfs.
We aim to investigate problems involving the computation of electronic bands for different isotopologues of TiO by modelling optical spectra of late-type stars and to determine their Ti isotopic abundances, to compare the TiO isotopologues spectra computed using line lists by different authors.
We fit theoretical synthetic spectra to the observed stellar molecular bands of TiO. We model spectra of two M-dwarfs: GJ 15A (M1V) and GJ 15B (M3 V) to determine Ti isotopic ratios in their atmospheres.
We demonstrate the accuracy of the ExoMol {\sc Toto} line list for differentisotopologues of TiO and the possibility of determining accurate Ti isotope abundances in a numberof spectral ranges. The 7580--7594 Å spectral range seems particularly useful, with two atomic linesof Fe I and molecular band heads of $^{50}Ti$O, $^{49}Ti$O, $^{48}Ti$O, $^{47}Ti$O clearly observable in our two M-dwarf spectra. We determine non-solar Ti isotopic ratios of $^{46}Ti$ : $^{47}Ti$ : $^{48}Ti$ : $^{49}Ti$ : $^{50}Ti$ = 7.9 : 5.2 : 72.8 : 7.9 :6.2 for GJ 15A and 7.4 : 4.2 : 76.6 : 5.8 : 6.0 for GJ 15B with accuracy of order $\pm$ 0.2. [Ti] = 0.040 and 0.199 within accuracy $\pm$ 0.10 were also determined for GJ 15A and GJ 15B, respectively.
We find that the ExoMol {\sc Toto} TiO line list: a) describes the fine details in line position and intensities of the M-dwarf spectra better than other available TiO line lists; b) correctly reproduces the positions and intensities of the TiO isotopologue band heads observed in M-dwarf spectra; c) can be used to determine Ti isotope abundances in atmospheres of M-stars.
The first overtone ($Δv$ = 2) bands of the monosubstituted isotopologues of CO at 2.3 $μ$m in the spectrum of Arcturus (K2 III), and of the monosubstituted isotopologues of SiO at 4 $μ$m in the spectrum of the red giant HD196610 (M6 III) are modelled. To investigate problems involving the computation of the first overtone bands of isotopologues of CO and SiO in spectra of late-type stars and to determine isotopic abundances. We use fits of theoretical synthetic spectra to the observed stellar molecular bands of CO and SiO to determine abundances of isotopes of C, O and Si. Fits of synthetic sp…
A hybrid approach to generating diatomic line lists for high resolution studies of exoplanets and other hot astronomical objects: Updates to ExoMol MgO, TiO and VO line lists
CK Vul is a star whose outburst was observed in 1670-72. A stellar-merger event was proposed to explain its ancient eruption. Aims: We aim to investigate the composition of the molecular gas recently discovered in the remnant of CK Vul. Methods: We observed millimeter and submillimeter-wave spectra of CK Vul using the IRAM 30m and APEX telescopes. Radiative-transfer modeling of the observed molecular features was performed to yield isotopic ratios for various elements. Results: The spectra of CK Vul reveal a very rich molecular environment of low excitation ($T_{\rm ex} \lesssim$12 K). Atomic …
Aim: The late stages of stellar evolution are mainly governed by the mass of the stars. Low- and intermediate-mass stars lose copious amounts of mass during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) which obscure the central star making it difficult to study the stellar spectra and determine the stellar mass. In this study, we present observational data that can be used to determine lower limits to the stellar mass. Method: Spectra of nine heavily reddened AGB stars taken by the Herschel Space Observatory display numerous molecular emission lines. The strongest emission lines are due to H2O. We search…
We use the spectra of Pleiades and field stars from LAMOST DR2 archive to study how spottedness and activity vary as a function of mass at young ages. We obtained standard TiO band strength by measuring TiO bands near 7050 $Å$ from LAMOST spectra (R$\approx$1800) for large sample of field GKM dwarfs with solar metallicity. Analysis show that active dwarfs, including late G- and early K-type, have extra TiO absorption compare to inactive counterparts, indicating the presence of cool spots on their surface. Active late K- and M-dwarfs show deeper TiO2 and shallower TiO4 compare to inactive stars…
One of the methods for deriving disk masses relies on direct observations of the gas, whose bulk mass is in the outer cold ($T\lesssim30$K) regions. This zone can be well traced by rotational lines of less abundant CO isotopologues, that probe the gas down to the midplane. The total CO gas mass is then obtained with the isotopologue ratios taken to be constant at the elemental isotope values found in the local ISM. This approach is however imprecise, because isotope selective processes are ignored. The aim of this work is an isotopologue selective treatment of CO isotopologues, in order to obt…
Despite intensive studies of protoplanetary disks, there is still no reliable way to determine their total mass and their surface density distribution, quantities that are crucial for describing both the structure and the evolution of disks up to the formation of planets. The goal of this work is to use less abundant CO isotopologues, whose detection is routine for ALMA, to infer the gas mass of disks. Isotope-selective effects need to be taken into account in the analysis, because they can significantly modify CO isotopologues line intensities. CO isotope-selective photodissociation has been …
We report on the discovery of an infrared emission band in the Spitzer spectrum of the S-type AGB star NP Aurigae that is caused by TiO molecules in the circumstellar environment. We modelled the observed emission to derive the temperature of the TiO molecules (\approx 600 K), an upper limit on the column density (\approx 10^17.25 cm^{-2}) and a lower limit on the spatial extent of the layer that contains these molecules. (\approx 4.6 stellar radii). This is the first time that this TiO emission band is observed. A search for similar emission features in the sample of S-type stars yielded two …
Fourteen stars from a sample of Magellanic Cloud objects selected to have a mid-infrared flux excess have been found to also show TiO bands in emission. The mid-infrared dust emission and the TiO band emission indicate that these stars have large amounts of hot circumstellar dust and gas in close proximity to the central star. The luminosities of the sources are typically several thousand L_sun while the effective temperatures are 4000-8000 K. Such stars could be post-AGB stars of mass 0.4-0.8 M_sun or pre-main-sequence stars (young stellar objects) with masses of 7-19 M_sun. If the stars are …
AIM: In this study we examine rotational emission lines of two isotopologues of water: H$_2$$^{17}$O and H$_2$$^{18}$O. By determining the abundances of these molecules, we aim to use the derived isotopologue --- and hence oxygen isotope --- ratios to put constraints on the masses of a sample of M-type AGB stars that have not been classified as OH/IR stars. METHODS: We use detailed radiative transfer analysis based on the accelerated lambda iteration method to model the circumstellar molecular line emission of H$_2$$^{17}$O and H$_2$$^{18}$O for IK Tau, R Dor, W Hya, and R Cas. The emission li…
Molecular absorption bands are estimators of stellar activity and spot cycles on magnetically active stars. We have previously introduced a new color index that compare absorption strength of the titanium oxide (TiO) at 567 nm with nearby continuum. In this paper we implement this index to measure long-term activity variations and the statistical properties of the index in a sample of 302 solar-type stars from the HARPS planet search program. The results indicate a pattern of change in star's activity, covers a range of periods from 2 years up to 17 years.
Isotopologue line intensity ratios of circumstellar molecules have been widely used to trace the photospheric elemental isotopic ratios of evolved stars. However, depending on the molecular species and the physical conditions of the environment, the circumstellar isotopologue ratio may deviate considerably from the stellar atmospheric value. In this paper, we aim to examine how the CO and HCN abundance ratios vary radially due to chemical reactions in the outflows of AGB stars and the effect of excitation and optical depth on the resulting line intensity ratios. We find that the circumstellar …
Stellar dynamo processes can be explored by measuring the magnetic field. This is usually obtained using the atomic and molecular Zeeman effect in spectral lines. While the atomic Zeeman effect can only access warmer regions, the use of molecular lines is of advantage for studying cool objects. The molecules MgH, TiO, CaH, and FeH are suited to probe stellar magnetic fields, each one for a different range of spectral types, by considering the signal that is obtained from modeling various spectral types. We have analyzed the usefulness of different molecules (MgH, TiO, CaH, and FeH) as diagnost…
Accurate line lists are crucial for correctly modelling a variety of astrophysical phenomena, including stellar photospheres and the atmospheres of extra-solar planets. This paper presents a new line database Toto for the main isotopologues of titanium oxide (TiO): $^{46}$Ti$^{16}$O, $^{47}$Ti$^{16}$O, $^{48}$Ti$^{16}$O, $^{49}$Ti$^{16}$O and $^{50}$Ti$^{16}$O. The TiO line list contains transitions with wave-numbers up to 30,000 cm$^{-1}$ ie long-wards of 0.33 $μ$m. The Toto line list includes all dipole-allowed transitions between 13 low-lying electronic states (X $^3Δ$, a $^1Δ$, d $^1Σ^+$, …
Context; Our understanding of the star formation process has traditionally been confined to certain mass or luminosity boundaries because most studies focus only on low-, intermediate- or high-mass star-forming regions. As part of the "Water In Star-forming regions with Herschel" (WISH) key program, water and other important molecules, such as CO and OH, have been observed in 51 embedded young stellar objects (YSOs). The studied sample covers a range of luminosities from <1 to >10^5 L_sol. Aims; We analyse the CO line emission towards a large sample of protostars in terms of both line intensit…

AIMS Our aim is to characterize the size, mass, density and temperature profiles of the protostellar envelope of HH~46 IRS 1 and its surrounding cloud material as well as the effect the outflow has on its environment.METHODS The CHAMP+ and LABOCA arrays on the APEX telescope, combined with lower frequency line receivers, are used to obtain a large continuum map and smaller heterodyne maps in various isotopologues of CO and HCO+. The high-J lines of CO (6--5 and 7--6) and its isotopologues together with [C I] 2--1, observed with CHAMP+, are used to probe the warm molecular gas in the inner few …
We present a re-appraisal of the temperatures of Red Supergiants (RSGs) using their optical and near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We have obtained data of a sample of RSGs in the Magellanic Clouds using VLT+XSHOOTER, and we fit MARCS model atmospheres to different regions of the spectra, deriving effective temperatures for each star from (a) the TiO bands, (b) line-free continuum regions of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and (c) the integrated fluxes. We show that the temperatures derived from fits to the TiO bands are systematically {\it lower} than the other two …
Low-mass M dwarfs represent the most common outcome of star formation, but their complex emergent spectra hinder detailed studies of their composition and initial formation. The measurement of isotopic ratios is a key tool that has been used to unlock the formation of our Solar System, the Sun, and the nuclear processes within more massive stars. We observed GJ 745AB, two M dwarfs orbiting in a wide binary, with the IRTF/iSHELL spectrograph. Our spectroscopy of CO in these stars at the 4.7 micron fundamental and 2.3 micron first-overtone rovibrational bandheads reveals 12C16O, 13C16O, and 12C1…
Stellar, substellar, and planetary atmosphere models are all highly sensitive to the input opacities. Generational differences between various state-of-the-art stellar/planetary models are primarily because of incomplete and outdated atomic/molecular line-lists. Here we present a database of pre-computed absorption cross-sections for all isotopologues of key atmospheric molecules relevant to late-type stellar, brown dwarf, and planetary atmospheres: MgH, AlH, CaH, TiH, CrH, FeH, SiO, TiO, VO, and H2O. The pressure and temperature ranges of the computed opacities are between 10$^{-6}$--3000~bar…
We present new determinations of the iron abundance for 220 stars belonging to the stellar system Terzan 5 in the Galactic bulge. The spectra have been acquired with FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory and DEIMOS at the Keck II Telescope. This is by far the largest spectroscopic sample of stars ever observed in this stellar system. From this dataset, a subsample of targets with spectra unaffected by TiO bands was extracted and statistically decontaminated from field stars. Once combined with 34 additional stars previously published by our group, a total samp…
We present U, B, V, I broad-band, 6200A TiO medium-band and Halpha photometry of the Orion Nebula Cluster obtained with the WFI imager at the ESO/MPI 2.2 telescope. The nearly-simultaneous observations cover the entire ONC in a field of about 34x34 arcmin. They enable us to determine stellar colors avoiding the additional scatter in the photometry induced by stellar variability typical of pre-main sequence stars. We identify 2,612 point-like sources in I band, 58%, 43% and 17% of them detected also in V, B and U, respectively. 1040 sources are identified in Halpha band. In this paper we presen…
We report the first identification of the optical bands of the B-X system of AlO in the red supergiant VY CMa. In addition to TiO, VO, ScO, and YO, which were recognized in the optical spectrum of the star long time ago, AlO is another refractory molecule which displays strong emission bands in this peculiar star. Simulating the bands of AlO, we derive a rotational temperature of the circumstellar gas of Trot=700K. By resolving individual rotational components of the bands, we derive the kinematical characteristics of the gas, finding that the emission is centered at the stellar radial velocit…
We present optical and infrared spectroscopy of V1309 Sco, an object that erupted in 2008 in a stellar-merger event. During the outburst, V1309 Sco displayed characteristics typical of red transients, a class of objects similar to V838 Mon. Our observations were obtained in 2009 and 2012, i.e. months and years after the eruption of V1309 Sco, and illustrate severe changes in the remnant, mainly in its circumstellar surroundings. In addition to atomic gas observed in earlier epochs, we identified molecular bands of TiO, VO, H$_2$O, ScO, AlO, and CrO. The infrared bands of CrO we analyse are the…
The origin and heating mechanisms of warm (50<T<200 K) molecular gas in low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) are strongly debated. Both passive heating of the inner collapsing envelope by the protostellar luminosity as well as active heating by shocks and by UV associated with the outflows or accretion have been proposed. We aim to characterize the warm gas within protosteller objects, and disentangle contributions from the (inner) envelope, bipolar outflows and the quiescent cloud. High-J CO maps (12CO J=6--5 and 7--6) of the immediate surroundings (up to 10,000 AU) of eight low-mass YSOs ar…
The CARMENES survey is searching for Earth-like planets orbiting M dwarfs using the radial velocity method. Studying the stellar activity of the target stars is important to avoid false planet detections and to improve our understanding of the atmospheres of late-type stars. In this work we present measurements of activity indicators at visible and near-infrared wavelengths for 331 M dwarfs observed with CARMENES. Our aim is to identify the activity indicators that are most sensitive and easiest to measure, and the correlations among these indicators. We also wish to characterise their variabi…

We study spectral diagnostics available from optical spectra with R=17000 obtained with the VLT/Giraffe HR15n setup, using observations from the Gaia-ESO Survey, on the gamma Vel young cluster, in order to determine the fundamental parameters of these stars. We define a set of spectroscopic indices, sampling TiO bands, H-alpha core and wings, and many temperature- and gravity-sensitive lines. Combined indices tau (gamma) are also defined as Teff (log g) indicators over a wide spectral-type range. H-alpha emission-line indices are also chromospheric activity or accretion indicators. A metallici…
We present an investigation of the globular cluster population synthesis method of McWilliam & Bernstein (2008), focusing on the impact of NLTE modeling effects and CMD discretization. Johnson-Cousins-Bessel U-B, B-V, V-I, and J-K colors are produced for 96 synthetic integrated light spectra with two different discretization prescriptions and three degrees of NLTE treatment. These color values are used to compare NLTE and LTE derived population ages. Relative contributions of different spectral types to the integrated light spectra for different wavebands are measured. Integrated light NLTE sp…
Young circumstellar disks that are still embedded in dense molecular envelopes may differ from their older counterparts, but are historically difficult to study because emission from a disk can be confused with envelope or outflow emission. CO fundamental emission is a potentially powerful probe of the disk/wind structure within a few AU of young protostars. In this paper, we present high spectral (R=90,000) and spatial (0.3") resolution VLT/CRIRES M-band spectra of 18 low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) with dense envelopes in nearby star-froming regions to explore the utility of CO fundame…
We observed two transits of the iconic gas giant HD 209458b between 380 and 780 nm, using the high-resolution ESPRESSO spectrograph. The derived planetary transmission spectrum exhibits features at all wavelengths where the parent star shows strong absorption lines, for example, NaI, MgI, FeI, FeII, CaI, VI, H$α$, and KI. We interpreted these features as the signature of the deformation of the stellar line profiles due to the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, combined with the centre-to-limb effects on the stellar surface, which is in agreement with similar reports recently presented in the literatu…
A new ro-vibrational line list for the ground electronic state of the main isotopologue of acetylene, $^{12}$C$_2$H$_2$, is computed as part of the ExoMol project. The aCeTY line list covers the transition wavenumbers up to 10,000 cm$^{-1}$ ($ λ>1$ $μ$m), with lower and upper energy levels up to 12,000 cm$^{-1}$ and 22,000 cm$^{-1}$ considered, respectively. The calculations are performed up to a maximum value for the vibrational angular momentum, $K_{\rm max}=L_{\rm max}$ = 16, and maximum rotational angular momentum, $J$ = 99. Higher values of $J$ were not within the specified wavenumber win…
The coolest dwarf stars are intrinsically faint at visible wavelengths and exhibit rotationally modulated stellar activity from spots and plages. It is advantageous to observe these stars at near infrared (NIR) wavelengths (1-2.5 microns) where they emit the bulk of their bolometric luminosity and are most quiescent. In this work we describe our methodology and results in obtaining precise radial velocity (RV) measurements of low mass stars using K-band spectra taken with the R~80,000 iSHELL spectrograph and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) using a methane isotopologue gas cell in t…
We determined effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities for a sample of 343 M dwarfs observed with CARMENES, the double-channel, high-resolution spectrograph installed at the 3.5 m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. We employed SteParSyn, a Bayesian spectral synthesis implementation particularly designed to infer the stellar atmospheric parameters of late-type stars following a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach. We made use of the BT-Settl model atmospheres and the radiative transfer code turbospectrum to compute a grid of synthetic spectra around 75 magnetically insensiti…
