We derive asymptotic expansions of the Kummer functions $M(a,b,z)$ and $U(a,b+1,z)$ for large positive values of $a$ and $b$, with $z$ fixed. For both functions we consider $b/a\le 1$ and $b/a\ge 1$, with special attention for the case $a\sim b$. We use a uniform method to handle all cases of these parameters.
In this paper we prove monotonicity of some ratios of $q$--Kummer confluent hypergeometric and $q$--hypergeometric functions. The results are also closely connected with Turán type inequalities. In order to obtain main results we apply methods developed earlier by the authors for the case of classical Kummer and Gauss hypergeometric functions.
In 1993 one of the authors formulated some conjectures on monotonicity of ratios for exponential series sections. They lead to more general conjecture on monotonicity of ratios of Kummer hypergeometric functions and was not proved from 1993. In this paper we prove these conjectures in the more general setting for Kummer hypergeometric functions and its further generalizations for Gauss and generalized hypergeometric functions. The results are also closely connected with Turan--type inequalities.
We examine the series expansions of the solutions of the confluent Heun equation in terms of three different sets of the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions. The coefficients of the expansions in general obey three-term recurrence relations defining double-sided infinite series; however, four-term and two-term relations are also possible in particular cases. The conditions for left- and/or right-side termination of the derived series are discussed.
In the preprint of 1993 the author formulated some conjectures on monotonicity of ratios for exponential series remainders. They are equivalent to conjectures on monotonicity of a ratio of Kummer hypergeometric functions and presumably not proved still. In this short note the most interesting conjecture from the preprint of 1993 is reproduced with its generalizations. In the updated version an important information is added that conjectures 1, 2 and also problems 1, 2 were recently proved by Khaled Mehrez from IPEIM, Tunisia, for details cf. arXiv:1410.6120. Also the results on monotonicity we…
This paper focuses on the location of the non-asymptotic zeros of Whittaker and Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions. Based on a technique by E. Hille for the analysis of solutions of some second-order ordinary differential equations, we characterize the sign of the real part of zeros of Whittaker and Kummer functions and provide estimates on the regions of the complex plane where those zeros can be located. Our main result is a correction of a previous statement by G. E. Tsvetkov whose propagation has induced mistakes in the literature. In particular, we review some results of E. B. Saff…
In a recent paper \cite{Temme:2021:AKH} new asymptotic expansions are given for the Kummer functions $M(a,b,z)$ and $U(a,b+1,z)$ for large positive values of $a$ and $b$, with $z$ fixed and special attention for the case $a\sim b$. In this paper we extend the approach and also accept large values of $z$. The new expansions are valid when at least one of the parameters $a$, $b$, or $z$ is large. We provide numerical tables to show the performance of the expansions.
We derive a convergent expansion of the generalized hypergeometric function ${}_{p-1}F_p$ in terms of the Bessel functions ${}_{0}F_1$ that holds uniformly with respect to the argument in any horizontal strip of the complex plane. We further obtain a convergent expansion of the generalized hypergeometric function ${}_{p}F_p$ in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions ${}_{1}F_1$ that holds uniformly in any right half-plane. For both functions, we make a further step and give convergent expansions in terms of trigonometric, exponential and rational functions that hold uniformly in the s…
Recently, Feng, Kuznetsov and Yang discovered a very general reduction formula for a sum of products of the generalized hypergeometric functions (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 443(2016), 116--122). The main goal of this note is to present a generalization of a particular case of their identity when the generalized hypergeometric function is reduced to the Kummer function 1F1. Our generalized formula contains an additional integer shift in the bottom parameter of the Kummer function. The key ingredient of the proof is a summation formula for the Clausen series 3F2(1) with two integral parameter differen…
We obtain addition formulas for $_{p}F_{p}$ and $_{p+1}F_{p}$ generalized hypergeometric functions with general parameters. These are utilized in conjunction with integral representations of these functions to derive Kummer- and Euler-type transformations that express $_{p}F_{p}\left(x\right)$ and $_{p+1}F_p\left(x\right)$ in the form of sums of $_{p}F_{p}\left(-x\right)$ and $_{p+1}F_p\left(-x\right)$ functions, respectively.
Recently, Rathie and Kılıçman (2014) employed Kummer-type transformation for $_{2}F_{2}(a, d+1; b, d; x)$ to develop certain classes of expansions theorems for $_{2}F_{2}(x)$ hypergeometric polynomial. Our aim is to deduce Kummer-type transformation for $_{2}F_{2}(a, d+2; b, d; x)$ and utilize it to develop some new expansion theorems for the confluent hypergeometric $_{2}F_{2}(x)$ polynomial. We also obtain a well-known result given by Kim et al. (Integral Transforms Spec. Funct. 23(6); 435-444, 2012) and many other new results as particular cases of our theorems.
This is a study of terminating and ill-defined Gauss hypergeometric functions. Corresponding hypergeometric equations have a degenerate set of of 24 Kummer's solutions. We describe those solutions and relations between them.
The well-known Kummer's formula evaluates the hypergeometric series 2F1(A,B;C;-1) when the relation B-A+C=1 holds. This paper deals with evaluation of 2F1(-1) series in the case when C-A+B is an integer. Such a series is expressed as a sum of two Γ-terms multiplied by terminating 3F2(1) series. A few such formulas were essentially known to Whipple in 1920's. Here we give a simpler and more complete overview of this type of evaluations. Additionally, algorithmic aspects of evaluating hypergeometric series are considered. We illustrate Zeilberger's method and discuss its applicability to non-ter…
We derive formulas for the construction of all inequivalent Jacobian elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves from extremal rational elliptic surfaces by rational base transformations and quadratic twists. We then show that each such decomposition yields a description of the Picard-Fuchs system satisfied by the periods of the holomorphic two-form as either a tensor product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations, an Appell hypergeometric system, or a GKZ differential system. As the answer must be independent of the fibration used, identities r…
Integral representations of hypergeometric functions proved to be a very useful tool for studying their properties. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we extend the known representations to arbitrary values of the parameters and show that the extended representations can be interpreted as examples of regularizations of integrals containing Meijer's $G$ function. Second, we give new applications of both, known and extended representations. These include: inverse factorial series expansion for the Gauss type function, new information about zeros of the Bessel and Kummer type functions,…
The asymptotic expansion of the Kummer function ${}_1F_1(a; b; z)$ is examined as $z\to+\infty$ on the Stokes line $\arg\,z=0$. The correct form of the subdominant algebraic contribution is obtained for non-integer $a$. Numerical results demonstrating the accuracy of the expansion are given.
We show a connection formula for the $q$-confluent hypergeometric functions ${}_2φ_1(a,b;0;q,x)$. Combining our connection formula with Zhang's connection formula for ${}_2φ_0(a,b;-;q,x)$, we obtain the connection formula for the $q$-confluent hypergeometric equation in the matrix form. Also we obtain the connection formula of Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions by taking the limit $q\to 1^{-}$ of our connection formula.
In this brief note, we show how to apply Kummer's and other quadratic transformation formulas for Gauss' and generalized hypergeometric functions in order to obtain transformation and summation formulas for series with harmonic numbers that contain one or two continuous parameters. We also give a generating function of the sequence $\frac{(a)_n (1-a)_n}{(n!)^2}H_n$ as a combination of Gauss hypergeometric function and elementary functions.
In Slater's 1960 standard work on confluent hypergeometric functions, also called Kummer functions, a number of asymptotic expansions of these functions can be found. We summarize expansions derived from a differential equation for large values of the $a-$parameter. We show how similar expansions can be derived by using integral representations, and we observe discrepancies with Slater's expansions.
It is shown that a known asymptotic expansion of the Kummer function $U(a,b,z)$ as $a$ tends to infinity is valid for $z$ on the full Riemann surface of the logarithm. A corresponding result is also proved in a more general setting considered by Olver (1956).
In the paper, the author finds an explicit formula for computing Bell numbers in terms of Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions and Stirling numbers of the second kind.
In this paper, the product of parabolic cylinder functions $D_ν(\pm z)D_{ν+μ-1}(z)$, with different parameters $μ$ and $ν$, are established in terms of Laplace and Fourier transforms of Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions. The provided integral representations are transformed to easily yield Nicholson-type integral forms and used to derive other series expansions for products of parabolic cylinder functions.
In this note, we recall Kummer's Fourier series expansion of the 1-periodic function that coincides with the logarithm of the Gamma function on the unit interval $(0,1)$, and we use it to find closed forms for some numerical series related to the generalized Stieltjes constants, and some integrals involving the function $x\mapsto \ln \ln(1/x)$.
Motivated by the new Laplace transforms for the Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions $_1F_1$ obtained recently by Kim et al. [Math $\&$ Comput. Modelling, 55 (2012), pp. 1068--1071], the authors aim is to establish so far unknown Laplace transforms of rather general case of generalized hypergeometric functions $_2F_2(x)$ and $_3F_3(x)$ by employing extensions of classical summation theorems for the series $_2F_1$ and $_3F_2$ obtained recently by Kim et al. [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci., 309503, 26 pages, 2010]. Certain known results obtained earlier by Kim et al. follow cases of our main fi…
The expansion of Kummer's hypergeometric function as a series of incomplete Gamma functions is discussed, for real values of the parameters and of the variable. The error performed approximating the Kummer function with a finite sum of Gammas is evaluated analytically. Bounds for it are derived, both pointwisely and uniformly in the variable; these characterize the convergence rate of the series, both pointwisely and in appropriate sup norms. The same analysis shows that finite sums of very few Gammas are sufficiently close to the Kummer function. The combination of these results with the know…
We show that there exist infinitely many particular choices of parameters for which the three-term recurrence relations governing the expansions of the solutions of the general Heun equation in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions become two-term. In these cases the coefficients are explicitly written in terms of the gamma functions.
We model the dynamical behavior of a three dimensional (3-D) dissipative oscillator consisting of a $m$-block whose vertical fall occurs against a spring and which can also slide horizontally on a rigid truss rotating at a known angular speed law $ω(t)$. The $z$-vertical time law is obvious, whilst its $x$-motion along the horizontal arm is ruled by a linear differential equation to be solved through the Hermite functions and the Confluent Hypergeometric Function (CHF) $_{1}F_{1}$ (Kummer). After the rotation time law $θ(t)$ has been computed, we know completely the mass motion in a cylindrica…
After reviewing some fundamental facts from the theory of theta hypergeometric series we derive, using indefinite summation, several summation, transformation, and expansion formulas for multibasic theta hypergeometric series. Some of the identities presented here generalize corresponding formulas given in Chapter 11 of the Gasper and Rahman book [Basic hypergeometric series, 2nd ed., Encyclopedia of Mathematics And Its Applications 96, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2004].
We show that there exist infinitely many nontrivial choices of parameters of the single confluent Heun equation for which the three-term recurrence relations governing the expansions of the solutions in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions 1F1 and 0F1 are reduced to two-term ones. In such cases the expansion coefficients are explicitly calculated in terms of the Euler gamma functions.
Uniform asymptotic expansions involving exponential and Airy functions are obtained for Laguerre polynomials $L_{n}^{(α)}(x)$, as well as complementary confluent hypergeometric functions. The expansions are valid for $n$ large and $α$ small or large, uniformly for unbounded real and complex values of $x$. The new expansions extend the range of computability of $L_n^{(α)}(x)$ compared to previous expansions, in particular with respect to higher terms and large values of $α$. Numerical evidence of their accuracy for real and complex values of $x$ is provided.
We obtain convergent inverse factorial expansions for the sum $S_n(a,b;c)$ of the first $n$ terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function of unit argument valid for $n\geq 1$. The form of these expansions depends on the location of the parametric excess $s:=c-a-b$ in the complex $s$-plane. The leading behaviour as $n\rightarrow\infty$ agrees with previous results in the literature. The case $a=b=1/2$, $c=1$ corresponds to the Landau contants.
The theoretical computing of special values assumed by the hypergeometric functions has a high interest not only on its own, but also in sight of the remarkable implications to both pure Mathematics and Mathematical Physics. Accordingly, in this paper we continue the path of research started in two our previous papers appeared on [30] and [31] providing some contribution to such functions computability inside and outside their disk of convergence. This is accomplished through two different approaches. The first is to provide some new results in the spirit of theorem 3.1 of 31] obtaining formul…
We consider the uniform asymptotic expansion for the Gauss hypergeometric function \[F(a+ελ,m;c+λ;x),\qquad λ\to+\infty\] for $x<1$ and positive integer $m$ when the parameter $ε>1$ and the constants $a$ and $c$ are supposed finite. When $m=1$, we employ the standard procedure of the method of steepest descents modified to deal with the situation when a saddle point is near a simple pole. It is shown that it is possible to give a closed-form expression for the coefficients in the resulting uniform expansion. The expansion when $m\geq 2$ is obtained by means of a recurrence relation. Numerical …
Several expansions of the solutions of the double-confluent Heun equation in terms of the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions are presented. Three different sets of these functions are examined. Discussing the expansions without a pre-factor, it is shown that two of these functions provide expansions the coefficients of which obey three-term recurrence relations, while for the third confluent hypergeometric function the corresponding recurrence relation generally involves five-terms. The latter relation is reduced to a three-term one only in the case when the double-confluent Heun equati…
We extend expansion formulas of Liu given in 2013 to the context of multiple series over root systems. Liu and others have shown the usefulness of these formulas in Special Functions and number-theoretic contexts. We extend Wang and Ma's generalizations of Liu's work which they obtained using $q$-Lagrange inversion. We use the $A_n$ and $C_n$ Bailey transformation and other summation theorems due to Gustafson, Milne, Milne and Lilly, and others, from the theory of $A_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ basic hypergeometric series.
The Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(a,b,c;z)$ can be computed by using the power series in powers of $z, z/(z-1), 1-z, 1/z, 1/(1-z),(z-1)/z$. With these expansions ${}_2F_1(a,b,c;z)$ is not completely computable for all complex values of $z$. As pointed out in Gil, {\it et al.} [2007, \S2.3], the points $z=e^{\pm iπ/3}$ are always excluded from the domains of convergence of these expansions. Bühring [1987] has given a power series expansion that allows computation at and near these points. But, when $b-a$ is an integer, the coefficients of that expansion become indeterminate and its com…
We review the series solutions of the general and single-confluent Heun equations in terms of powers, ordinary-hypergeometric and confluent-hypergeometric functions. The conditions under which the expansions reduce to finite sums as well as the cases when the coefficients of power-series expansions obey two-term recurrence relations are discussed. Infinitely many cases for which a solution of a general or single-confluent Heun equation is written through a single generalized hypergeometric function are indicated. It is shown that the parameters of this generalized hypergeometric function are t…
We obtain the asymptotic expansion for the Gauss hypergeometric function \[F(a-λ,b+λ;c+iαλ;z)\] for $λ\rightarrow+\infty$ with $a$, $b$ and $c$ finite parameters by application of the method of steepest descents. The quantity $α$ is real, so that the denominatorial parameter is complex and $z$ is a finite complex variable restricted to lie in the sector $|\arg (1-z)|<π$. We concentrate on the particular case $a=0$, $b=c=1$, which is associated with the Legendre functions of real degree and imaginary order. The resulting expansions are of Poincaré type and hold in restricted domains of the $z$-…
We consider the uniform asymptotic expansion for the Gauss hypergeometric function \[{}_2F_1(a+ελ,b;c+λ;x),\qquad 0<x<1\] as $λ\to+\infty$ in the neigbourhood of $εx=1$ when the parameter $ε>1$ and the constants $a$, $b$ and $c$ are supposed finite. Use of a standard integral representation shows that the problem reduces to consideration of a simple saddle point near an endpoint of the integration path. A uniform asymptotic expansion is first obtained by employing Bleistein's method. An alternative form of uniform expansion is derived following the approach described in Olver's book [{\it Asym…
We introduce a natural method of computing antiderivatives of a large class of functions which stems from the observation that the series expansion of an antiderivative differs from the series expansion of the corresponding integrand by just two Pochhammer symbols. All antiderivatives are thus, in a sense, "hypergeometric". And hypergeometric functions are therefore the most natural functions to integrate. This paper would like to make two points: First, the method presented is easy. So much so that it can be taught in undergraduate university level. And second: It may be used to prove some of…
We derive tail asymptotics for the running maximum of the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process. The main result is proved by the saddle point method, where the tail estimate uses a new monotonicity property of the Kummer function. This auxiliary result is established by a computer algebra assisted proof. Moreover, we analyse the coefficients of the eigenfunction expansion of the running maximum distribution asymptotically.
It is well known that rational approximation theory involves degenerate hypergeometric functions and, in particular, the Padé approximation of the exponential function is closely related to Kummer hypergeometric functions. Recently, in the context of the study of the exponential stability of the trivial solution of delay-differential equations, a new link between the degenerate hypergeometric function and the zeros distribution of the characteristic function associated with linear delay-differential equations was emphasized. Such a link allowed the characterization of a property of time-delay …
The confluent hypergeometric functions (the Kummer functions) defined by ${}_{1}F_{1}(α;γ;z):=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{(α)_{n}}{n!(γ)_{n}}z^{n}\ (γ\neq 0,-1,-2,\cdots)$, which are of many properties and great applications in statistics, mathematical physics, engineering and so on, have been given. In this paper, we investigate some new properties of ${}_{1}F_{1}(α;γ;z)$ from the perspective of value distribution theory. Specifically, two different growth orders are obtained for $α\in \mathbb{Z}_{\leq 0}$ and $α\not\in \mathbb{Z}_{\leq 0}$, which are corresponding to the reduced case and non-de…
We study integral representations of the Gevrey series solutions of irregular hypergeometric systems under certain assumptions. We prove that, for such systems, any Gevrey series solution, along a coordinate hyperplane of its singular support, is the asymptotic expansion of a holomorphic solution given by a carefully chosen integral representation.
We examine the expansions of the solutions of the general Heun equation in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions. We present several expansions using functions, the forms of which differ from those applied before. In general, the coefficients of the expansions obey three-term recurrence relations. However, there exist certain choices of the parameters for which the recurrence relations become two-term. The coefficients of the expansions are then explicitly expressed in terms of the gamma functions. Discussing the termination of the presented series, we show that the finite-sum solutions …
In an article that appeared in Journal of Approximation Theory, Neuschel investigated the asymptotic expansion of certain hypergeometric polynomials of type ${}_3 F_1$ inside and outside a closed curve. We supplement this result by studying a subfamily of those polynomials on a part of the closed curve.
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the generalised hypergeometric function \[{}_3F_2\bl(\!\!\begin{array}{c} 1, (1+t)k/2, (1+t)k/2+1/2\\tk+1, k+1\end{array}\!\!; x\br),\qquad 0<x,t\leq 1\] as the parameter $k\to+\infty$. Numerical results illustrating the accuracy of the resulting expansion are given.
A series expansion for Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions $φ_λ$ is obtained for all $λ\in \mathfrak a^*_{\mathbb C}.$ As a consequence, estimates for $φ_λ$ away from the walls of a Weyl chamber are established. We also characterize the bounded hypergeometric functions and thus prove an analogue of the celebrated theorem of Helgason and Johnson on the bounded spherical functions on a Riemannian symmetric space of the noncompact type. The $L^p$-theory for the hypergeometric Fourier transform is developed for $0<p<2$. In particular, an inversion formula is proved when $1\leq p <2$.
We use elliptic Taylor series expansions and interpolation to deduce a number of summations for elliptic hypergeometric series. We extend to the well-poised elliptic case results that in the $q$-case have previously been obtained by Cooper and by Ismail and Stanton. We also provide identities involving S. Bhargava's cubic theta functions.
We construct several expansions of the solutions of the confluent Heun equation in terms of the incomplete Beta functions and the Appell generalized hypergeometric functions of two variables of the fist kind. The coefficients of different expansions obey four-, five-, or six-term recurrence relations that are reduced to ones involving less number of terms only in a few exceptional cases. The conditions for deriving finite-sum solutions via termination of the series are discussed.
In this talk, we discuss the algorithm for the construction of analytical coefficients of higher order epsilon expansion of some Horn type hypergeometric functions of two variables around rational values of parameters.
Polynomial sequence ${P_m}_{m\geq0}$ is $q$-logarithmically concave if $P_{m}^2-P_{m+1}P_{m-1}$ is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients for any $m\geq{1}$. We introduce an analogue of this notion for formal power series whose coefficients are nonnegative continuous functions of parameter. Four types of such power series are considered where parameter dependence is expressed by a ratio of gamma functions. We prove six theorems stating various forms of $q$-logarithmic concavity and convexity of these series. The main motivating examples for these investigations are hypergeometric functions…
We write spectral decomposition of the hypergeometric differential operator on the contour $Re z=1/2$ (multiplicity of spectrum is 2). As a result, we obtain an integral transform that differs from the Jacobi (or Olevsky) transform. We also try to do a step towards vector-valued special functions and construct a 3F2 orthogonal basis in the space of functions having values in 2-dimensional space. This basis is lying in an analytic continuation of continuous dual Hahn polynomials with respect to number $n$ of a polynomial. In Addendum, we discuss a vector-value analog of the Meixner--Pollachek o…
