We confirm the stability of Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics by constructing a series of two-parametric bounded conserved quantities which includes the canonical energy-momentum tensors. In addition, we evaluate the transition-amplitude of this higher derivative system in BV antifield formalism and obtain the desirable generalized radiation gauge condition by choosing appropriate gauge-fixing fermion. Within the framework of Lagrangian BRST cohomology, we present the constructions of consistent interactions in Podolsky's model and when concentrating on the antighost number zero part of the master action after deformation process, we get the non-Abelian extensions of the Podolsky's theory. Furthermore, we calculate the number of physical degrees of freedom in the resulting higher derivative system utilizing Dirac-Bergmann algorithm method and show that it is unchanged if the consistent interactions are included into the free theory.
For a Podolsky-axionic electrodynamics, we compute the interaction potential within the structure of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. The result is equivalent to that of axionic electrodynamics from a new noncommutative approach, up to first order in $θ$.
In this work we apply the Matsubara-Fradkin formalism and the Nakanishi's auxiliary field method to the quantization of the Podolsky electrodynamics in thermodynamic equilibrium. This approach allows us to write consistently the path integral representation for the partition function of gauge theories in a simple manner. Furthermore, we find the Dyson-Schwinger-Fradkin equations and the Ward-Fradkin-Takahashi identities for the Podolsky theory. We also write the most general form for the polarization tensor in thermodynamic equilibrium.
In this paper we demonstrate the arising of higher-derivative contributions to the effective action of electrodynamics on the base of generalized Julia-Toulouse mechanism and explicitly show that the complete effective action generated within this methodology is nonlocal.
We consider the self-interaction phenomenon in the framework of the Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics. In the present paper, we obtain the self-interaction potential energy of a charge at rest for the spacetimes with topological defects of two types: for the axially symmetric spacetime of the straight cosmic string and the spherically symmetric global monopole spacetime. It is shown that the behavior of this expression depends essentially on the angular defect, in spite of the Bopp-Podolsky model parameter, which plays the role of a scale factor. In contrast with the usual Maxwell electrodynamics,…
We discuss an inherent Pauli-Villars regularization in Bopp-Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics. Introducing gauge-fixing terms for Bopp-Podolsky's generalized electrodynamic action, we realize a unique feature for the corresponding photon propagator with a built-in Pauli-Villars regularization independent of the gauge choice made in Maxwell's usual electromagnetism. According to our realization, the length dimensional parameter $a$ associated with Bopp-Podolsky's higher order derivatives corresponds to the inverse of the Pauli-Villars regularization mass scale $Λ$, i.e. $a = 1/Λ$. Solving …
In this paper we obtain the expression for the self-force in the model with the Lagrangian containing additional terms, quadratic in Maxwell tensor derivatives (so-called Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics). Features of this force are analyzed for various limiting cases. When a charged particle moves along straight line with a uniform acceleration, an explicit formula is found. In the framework of the considered model, an observable renormalized particle mass is shown to depend on its acceleration. This dependence allows, in principle, to extract experimentally a value of the particle bare mass.
We consider the interaction between a charged scalar boson and the Bopp-Podolsky gauge fields. The Bopp-Podolsky (BP) electrodynamics possesses both massive and massless propagation modes for the photon, while preserving gauge invariance. We obtain the propagator of all fields present in the model for the higher-order generalizations of the linear covariant, light-front and doubly transverse light-front gauges. Although BP's original model is described by a higher-order derivatives Lagrangian, it is possible to work with an equivalent reduced-order version by means of the introduction of an au…
The Podolsky generalized electrodynamics with higher derivatives is formulated in the first-order formalism. The first-order relativistic wave equation in the 20-dimensional matrix form is derived. We prove that the matrices of the equation obey the Petiau-Duffin-Kemmer algebra. The Hermitianizing matrix and Lagrangian in the first-order formalism are given. The projection operators extracting solutions of field equations for states with definite energy-momentum and spin projections are obtained, and we find the density matrix for the massive state. The $13\times 13$-matrix Schrodinger form of…
In this work we will develop the canonical structure of Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics on the null-plane. This theory has second-order derivatives in the Lagrangian function and requires a closer study for the definition of the momenta and canonical Hamiltonian of the system. On the null-plane the field equations also demand a different analysis of the initial-boundary value problem and proper conditions must be chosen on the null-planes. We will show that the constraint structure, based on Dirac formalism, presents a set of second-class constraints, which are exclusive of the analysis…
In this work, we consider the generalized quantum electrodynamics proposed by Podolsky in Heisenberg picture via Kallen methodology. We investigate the effects of higher-order derivatives to understand the qualitative and quantitative aspects of vacuum polarization. In addition, the most general structure of induced current and polarization tensor that emerge naturally by a perturbative scheme "a la" Kallen is also obtained. Afterward, we discuss the physical implication of charge renormalization in the perspective of unitary and stable Podolsky theory.
I show that Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) predicts a sort of uncertainty principle on the number of the "soft photons" that can be produced in coincidence with the particles that are observed in any EPR experiment. This result is argued to be sufficient to remove the original EPR paradox. A signature of this soft-photons solution of the EPR paradox would be the observation of apparent symmetry violation in single events. On the other hand, in the case of the EPR experiments that have actually been realized, the QED correlations are argued to be very close to those calculated by the previous, i…
In this work we study the Higgs mechanism and the Debye shielding for the Bopp-Podolsky theory of electrodynamics. We find that not only the massless sector of the Podolsky theory acquires a mass in both these phenomena, but also that its massive sector has its mass changed. Furthermore, we find a mathematical analogy in the way these masses change between these two mechanisms. Besides exploring the behaviour of the screened potentials, we find a temperature for which the presence of the generalized gauge field may be experimentally detected.
In this article we study some classical aspects of Podolsky Electrodynamics in the static regime. We develop the multipole expansion for the theory in both the electrostatic and the magnetostatic cases. We also address the problem of consistently truncating the infinite series associated with the several kinds of multipoles, yielding approximations for the static Podolskian electromagnetic field to any degree of precision required. Moreover, we apply the general theory of multipole expansion to some specific physical problems. In those problems we identify the first terms of the series with th…
The construction of an alternative electromagnetic theory that preserves Lorentz and gauge symmetries, is considered. We start off by building up Maxwell electrodynamics in (3+1)D from the assumption that the associated Lagrangian is a gauge-invariant functional that depends on the electron and photon fields and their first derivatives only. In this scenario, as well-known, it is not possible to set up a Lorentz invariant gauge theory containing a massive photon. We show nevertheless that there exist two radically different electrodynamics, namely, the Chern-Simons and the Podolsky formulation…
We perform the canonical and path integral quantizations of a lower-order derivatives model describing Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics. The physical content of the model shows an auxiliary massive vector field coupled to the usual electromagnetic field. The equivalence with Podolsky's original model is studied at classical and quantum levels. Concerning the dynamical time evolution we obtain a theory with two first-class and two second-class constraints in phase space. We calculate explicitly the corresponding Dirac brackets involving both vector fields. We use the Senjanovic procedure …
We investigate the interparticle potential between spin-0, -1/2 and -1 sources interacting in modified electrodynamics in the non-relativistic regime. By keeping terms of $\mathcal{O}( |{\bf p}|^2/m^2 )$ in the amplitudes, we obtain spin- and velocity-dependent interaction energies. We find well-known effects such as spin-orbit couplings, as well as spin-spin (dipole-dipole) interactions. For concreteness, we consider the cases of electrodynamics with higher derivatives (Podolsky-Lee-Wick) and hidden photons.
In this paper, we investigate from the framework of generalized electrodynamics the differential cross section of the electron-electron scattering process $e^- e^- \rightarrow e^- e^-$, i.e., Møller scattering, in $(2+1)$ dimensions in the Heisenberg picture. To this goal, one starts within the stable and unitary framework of planar generalized electrodynamics, instead of Maxwell one. We argue the Haag's theorem strongly suggests the study of the differential cross section in the Heisenberg representation. Afterward, we explore the influence of Podolsky mass cutoff and calculate the differenti…
We show that relativistic quantum electrodynamics in the Coulomb gauge satisfies the following bound, which establishes stability: let $H(Λ,V)$ denote the Hamiltonian of $QED_{1+3}$ on the three-dimensional torus of volume $V$ and with ultraviolet cutoff $Λ$. Then there exists a constant $0<μ(Λ,V)<\infty$ (the vacuum energy renormalization) such that the renormalized Hamiltonian is positive: $H_{ren}(Λ,V) \equiv H_{Λ,V}+μ_{Λ, V}\cdot \mathbb{1} \ge 0 $.
A survey of the stability of matter problem is given, starting with the stability of the hydrogen atom. The stablity of bulk matter with Coulomb potentials, with or without relativistic mechanics, and with or without magnetic fields is discussed. The final section discusses the stability of matter in a relativistic model with the Dirac operator as kinetic energy (but restricted to the positive subspace) and with the quantized electromagnetic field in the Coulomb gauge.
In this work we present the study of the renormalizability of the Generalized Quantum Electrodynamics ($GQED_{4}$). We begin the article by reviewing the on-shell renormalization scheme applied to $GQED_{4}$. Thereafter, we calculate the explicit expressions for all the counter-terms at one-loop approximation and discuss the infrared behavior of the theory as well. Next, we explore some properties of the effective coupling of the theory which would give an indictment of the validity regime of theory: $m^{2} \leq k^{2} < m_{P}^{2}$. Afterwards, we make use of experimental data from the electron…
In this paper we study the generalized electrodynamics contribution for the electron-positron scattering process, $e^{-}e^{+}\rightarrow e^{-}e^{+}$, the Bhabha scattering. Within the framework of the standard model, for energies larger when compared to the electron mass, we calculate the cross section expression for the scattering process. This quantity is usually calculated in the framework of the Maxwell electrodynamics and, by phenomenological reasons, corrected by a cut-off parameter. On the other hand, by considering the generalized electrodynamics instead of Maxwell's, we can show that …
In this work, we study the thermodynamic properties of a photon gas in a heat bath within the context of higher-derivative electrodynamics. Specifically, we analyze Podolsky's theory and its extension involving the Lorentz symmetry violation recently proposed in the literature. First, we use the concept of the number of available states of the system in order to construct the partition function. Next, we calculate the main thermodynamic functions: Helmholtz free energy, mean energy, entropy, and heat capacity. In particular, we verify that there exist significant changes in heat capacity and m…
Podolsky's electromagnetism which explains some of unresolved problems of usual QED has been investigated in the framework of finite field dependent (FFBRST) BRST transformation. In this generalized QED (GQED), BRST invariant effective theories are written using generalized Lorenz gauge, $(1+\frac{\Box }{m_p^2})\partial^μA_μ=0$ and no mixing gauge condition $(1+\frac{\Box }{m_p^2})^\frac{1}{2} \ \partial^μA_μ=0$, it contains higher order derivative terms. No Mixing gauge is free from UV divergences in the radiative correction and easier to handle. We construct appropriate FFBRST transformation…
The aim of this work is to discuss some aspects of the reduction of order formalism in the context of the Fadeev-Jackiw symplectic formalism, both at the classical and the quantum level. We start by reviewing the symplectic analysis in a regular theory (a higher derivative massless scalar theory), both using the Ostrogradsky prescription and also by reducing the order of the Lagrangian with an auxiliary field, showing the equivalence of these two approaches. The interpretation of the degrees of freedom is discussed in some detail. Finally, we perform the similar analysis in a singular higher d…
In this paper, we give an update on divergent problems concerning the radiative corrections of quantum electrodynamics in $(3+1)$ dimensions. In doing so, we introduce a geometric adaptation for the covariant photon propagator by including a higher derivative field. This derivation, so-called generalized quantum electrodynamics, is motivated by the stability and unitarity features. This theory provides a natural and self-consistent extension of the quantum electrodynamics by enlarging the space parameter of spinor-gauge interactions. In particular, Haag$'$s theorem undermines the perturbative …
The relativistic ``no pair'' model of quantum electrodynamics uses the Dirac operator, D(A), for the electron dynamics together with the usual self-energy of the quantized ultraviolet cutoff electromagnetic field A -- in the Coulomb gauge. There are no positrons because the electron wave functions are constrained to lie in the positive spectral subspace of some Dirac operator, D, but the model is defined for any number, N, of electrons, and hence describes a true many-body system. In addition to the electrons there are a number, K, of fixed nuclei with charges \leq Z. If the fields are not qua…
We observe that a wide class of higher-derivative systems admits a bounded integral of motion that ensures the classical stability of dynamics, while the canonical energy is unbounded. We use the concept of a Lagrange anchor to demonstrate that the bounded integral of motion is connected with the time-translation invariance. A procedure is suggested for switching on interactions in free higher-derivative systems without breaking their stability. We also demonstrate the quantization technique that keeps the higher-derivative dynamics stable at quantum level. The general construction is illustra…
We examine Podolsky's electrodynamics, which is noninvariant under the usual duality transformation. We deduce a generalization of Hodge's star duality, which leads to a dual gauge field and restores to a certain extent the dual symmetry. The model becomes fully dual symmetric asymptotically when it reduces to the Maxwell theory. We argue that this strict dual symmetry directly implies the existence of the basic invariants of the electromagnetic fields.
We study the perturbative stability of magnetic black holes in a general class of nonlinear electrodynamics, where the Lagrangian is given by a general function of the field strength of electromagnetic field $F_{μν}$ and its Hodge dual $\widetilde{F}_{μν}$. We derive sufficient conditions for the stability of the black holes. We apply the stability conditions to Bardeen's regular black holes, black holes in Euler-Heisenberg theory, and black holes in Born-Infeld theory. As a result, we obtain a sufficient condition for the stability of Bardeen's black holes, which restricts $F_{μν}\widetilde{F…
This work is an application of the second order gauge theory for the Lorentz group, where a description of the gravitational interaction is obtained which includes derivatives of the curvature. We analyze the form of the second field strenght, $G=\partial F +fAF$, in terms of geometrical variables. All possible independent Lagrangians constructed with quadratic contractions of $F$ and quadratic contractions of $G$ are analyzed. The equations of motion for a particular Lagrangian, which is analogous to Podolsky's term of his Generalized Electrodynamics, are calculated. The static isotropic solu…
The quantization of a vector model presenting spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry in flat Minkowski spacetime is discussed. The Stueckelberg trick of introducing an auxiliary field along with a local symmetry in the initial Lagrangian is used to convert the second-class constraints present in the initial Lagrangian to first-class ones. An additional deformation is employed in the resulting Lagrangian to handle properly the first-class constraints, and the equivalence with the initial model is demonstrated using the BRST invariance of the deformed Lagrangian. The framework for performing p…
It is well-known that the 5D gauge structure of Stueckelberg-Horwitz-Piron (SHP) electrodynamics permits the exchange of mass between particles and the fields induced by their motion, even at the classical level. This phenomenon presents two closely related problems: (1) What accounts for the stability of the measured masses of the known particles? (2) Under what circumstances can real particles evolve sufficiently off-shell to account for mass changing phenomena such as flavor-changing neutrino interactions and low energy nuclear reactions? To approach these questions, we introduce a constant…
Stringent limits on the Myers-Pospelov timelike parameter for photons $ξ<10^{-15}$ coming from astrophysical tests suggest exploring more general preferred backgrounds, such as spacelike and lightlike. We take some steps in this direction. We allow the external four vector $n$ characterizing the Lorentz symmetry breaking to have arbitrary directions in spacetime. We study the consistency for the effective field theories in each privileged frame by demanding causality, stability and analyticity. When specializing to a timelike background we found runaway solutions leading to causality and unita…
Compact quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions often arises as an effective theory for a Mott insulator, with the Dirac fermions representing the low-energy spinons. An important and controversial issue in this context is whether a deconfinement transition takes place. We perform a renormalization group analysis to show that deconfinement occurs when $N>N_c=36/π^3\approx 1.161$, where $N$ is the number of fermion replica. For $N<N_c$, however, there are two stable fixed points separated by a line containing a unstable non-trivial fixed point: a fixed point corresponding to the scaling limit…
We examine the generalized quantum electrodynamics as a natural extension of the Maxwell electrodynamics to cure the one-loop divergence. We establish a precise scenario to discuss the underlying features between photon and fermion where the perturbative Maxwell electrodynamics fails. Our quantum model combines stability, unitarity, and gauge invariance as the central properties. To interpret the quantum fluctuations without suffering from the physical conflicts proved by Haag's theorem, we construct the covariant quantization in the Heisenberg picture instead of the Interaction one. Furthermo…
I consider electrodynamics and the problem of knotted solitons in two-component superconductors. Possible existence of knotted solitons in multicomponent superconductors was predicted several years ago. However their basic properties and stability in these systems remains an outstandingly difficult question both for analytical and numerical treatment. Here I propose a new perturbative approach to treat self-consistently all the degrees of freedom in the problem. I show that there exists a length scale for a Hopfion texture where the electrodynamics of a two-component superconductor is dominate…
We develop a general holographic superconductor away from the probe limit by considering the corrections both in the gravity and in the gauge matter fields. We find the consistent effects of the high curvature correction in the gravity, the nonlinear correction in the gauge matter field and the backreaction on the dynamics of bulk AdS background and boundary CFT. They all have the effect to protect the stability of the bulk spacetime and hinder the formation of the scalar hair condensation on the boundary.
In this paper, we construct a new class of topological black hole Lifshitz solutions in the presence of nonlinear exponential electrodynamics for Einstein-dilaton gravity. We show that the reality of Lifshitz supporting Maxwell matter fields exclude the negative horizon curvature solutions except for the asymptotic AdS case. Calculating the conserved and thermodynamical quantities, we obtain a Smarr type formula for the mass and confirm that thermodynamics first law is satisfied on the black hole horizon. Afterward, we study the thermal stability of our solutions and figure out the effects of …
In this work, a new class of slowly rotating black hole solutions in dilaton gravity has been obtained where dilaton field is coupled with nonlinear Maxwell invariant. The background space-time is a stationary axisymmetric geometry. Here, it has been shown that the dilaton potential can be written in the form of generalized three Liouville-type potentials. In the presence of this three Liouville-type dilaton potential, the asymptotic behavior of the obtained solutions are neither flat nor (A)dS. One bizarre property of the electric field is that the electric field goes to zero when $r\rightarr…
We consider the class of higher derivative field equations whose wave operator is a square of another self-adjoint operator of lower order. At the free level, the models of this class are shown to admit a two-parameter series of integrals of motion. The series includes the canonical energy. Every conserved quantity is unbounded in this series. The interactions are included into the equations of motion such that a selected representative in conserved quantity series is preserved at the non-linear level. The interactions are not necessarily Lagrangian, but they admit Hamiltonian form of dynamics…
I investigate three dimensional abelian and non-abelian gauge theories interacting with Dirac fermions. Using a variational method I evaluate the vacuum energy density in the one-loop approximation. It turns out that the states with a constant magnetic condensate lie below the perturbative ground state only in the case of three dimensional quantum electrodynamics with massive fermions.
The possibility of electron-positron pair creation by an electric field is studied by using only those methods in field theory the predictions of which are confirmed experimentally. These methods include the perturbative method of quantum electrodynamics and the bases of classical electrodynamics. Such an approach includes the back reaction. It is found that the vacuum is always stable, in the sense that pair creation, if occurs, cannot be interpreted as a decay of the vacuum, but rather as a decay of the source of the electric field or as a process similar to bremsstrahlung. It is also found …
In the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-axion-aether theory we establish the model, the Lagrangian of which contains the sin-type generalization of the term describing the axion-photon coupling, and the axionically induced cosine-type modification of the term attributed to the dilaton-photon interactions. The extension of the axion-dilaton-aether electrodynamics is inspired by the Jackson's idea concerning the internal symmetry of the equations of electromagnetism. The application of the extended theory to the anisotropic homogeneous cosmological model of the Bianchi-I type is considered. The…
Following the interpretation of matter source that the energy-momentum tensor of anisotropic fluid can be dealt with effectively as the energy-momentum tensor of perfect fluid plus linear (Maxwell) electromagnetic field, we obtain the regular higher-dimensional Reissner-Nordström (Tangherlini-RN) solution by starting with the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild solution. Using the boundary conditions that connect the noncommutative Schwarzschild solution in the interior of the charged perfect fluid sphere to the Tangherlini-RN solution in the exterior of the sphere, we find that the…
The stability of Yang-Mills bundles over the usual $S^4$ space-time manifold is investigated according to the topological methods. The necessary gauge- and topological invaraint criterion for the exsitence of the related critical points is defined. It is shown that according to this criterion there exists no critical point even for the action functional of the standard U(1) gauge theory of electrodynamics on a $S^4$ manifold in view of its topological structure and therefore such a theory can not be stable. We will discuss also a general consequence of this result according to which for a stab…
We study the stability of static black holes in generalized Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. We derive the master equations for the odd and even parity perturbations. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the stability of black holes under odd-parity perturbations are derived. We show that these conditions are usually not similar to energy conditions even in the simplest case of a minimally coupled scalar field. We obtain the necessary conditions for the stability of even-parity perturbations. We also derived the speed of propagation of the five degrees of freedom and obtained the class…
