The Painleve-IV equation has two families of rational solutions generated respectively by the generalized Hermite polynomials and the generalized Okamoto polynomials. We apply the isomonodromy method to represent all of these rational solutions by means of two related Riemann-Hilbert problems, each of which involves two integer-valued parameters related to the two parameters in the Painleve-IV equation. We then use the steepest-descent method to analyze the rational solutions in the limit that at least one of the parameters is large. Our analysis provides rigorous justification for formal asymptotic arguments that suggest that in general solutions of Painleve-IV with large parameters behave either as an algebraic function or an elliptic function. Moreover, the results show that the elliptic approximation holds on the union of a curvilinear rectangle and, in the case of the generalized Okamoto rational solutions, four curvilinear triangles each of which shares an edge with the rectangle; the algebraic approximation is valid in the complementary unbounded domain. We compare the theoretical predictions for the locations of the poles and zeros with numerical plots of the actual poles and zeros obtained from the generating polynomials, and find excellent agreement.
This is a sequel to papers by the last two authors making the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and isomonodromy explicit. For the degenerate fifth Painlevé equation, the moduli spaces for connections and for monodromy are explicitly computed. It is proven that the extended Riemann-Hilbert morphism is an isomorphism. As a consequence these equations have the Painlevé property and the Okamoto-Painlevé space is identified with a moduli space of connections. Using MAPLE computations, one obtains formulas for the degenerate fifth Painlevé equation, for the Bäcklund transformations.
We show that the topological recursion for the (semi-classical) spectral curve of the first Painlevé equation $P_{\rm I}$ gives a WKB solution for the isomonodromy problem for $P_{\rm I}$. In other words, the isomonodromy system is a quantum curve in the sense of [Dumitrescu O., Mulase M., Lett. Math. Phys. 104 (2014), 635-671, arXiv:1310.6022] and [Dumitrescu O., Mulase M., arXiv:1411.1023].
In this paper, we consider the monodromy and, in particularly, the isomonodromy sets of accessory parameters for the Heun class equations. We show that the Heun class equations can be obtained as limits of the linear systems associated with the Painlevé equations when the Painlevé transcendents go to one of the actual singular points of the linear systems. While the isomonodromy sets of accessory parameters for the Heun class equations are described by the Taylor or Laurent coefficients of the corresponding Painlevé functions, or the associated tau functions, at the positions of the critical v…
We consider a 3-dimensional Pfaffian system, whose z-component is a differential system with irregular singularity at infinity and Fuchsian at zero. In the first part of the paper, we prove that its Frobenius integrability is equivalent to the sixth Painlevé equation PVI. The coefficients of the system will be explicitly written in terms of the solutions of PVI. In this way, we remake a result of [44, 61]. We then express in terms of the Stokes matrices of the 3x3 irregular system the monodromy invariants p_{jk}=Tr(M_jM_k) of the 2-dimensional isomonodromic Fuchsian system with four singularit…
The D7 degeneration of the Painleve-III equation has solutions that are rational functions of $x^{1/3}$ for certain parameter values. We apply the isomonodromy method to obtain a Riemann-Hilbert representation of these solutions. We demonstrate the utility of this representation by analyzing rigorously the behavior of the solutions in the large parameter limit.
The rational solutions of the Painlevé-II equation appear in several applications and are known to have many remarkable algebraic and analytic properties. They also have several different representations, useful in different ways for establishing these properties. In particular, Riemann-Hilbert representations have proven to be useful for extracting the asymptotic behavior of the rational solutions in the limit of large degree (equivalently the large-parameter limit). We review the elementary properties of the rational Painlevé-II functions, and then we describe three different Riemann-Hilbert…
We show that a 2-parameter family of $τ$-functions for the first Painlevé equation can be constructed by the discrete Fourier transform of the topological recursion partition function for a family of elliptic curves. We also perform an exact WKB theoretic computation of the Stokes multipliers of associated isomonodromy system assuming certain conjectures.
In literature, it is known that any solution of Painlevé VI equation governs the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. In this paper, we extend this isomonodromy theory on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ to the moduli space of elliptic curves by studying the isomonodromic deformation of the generalized Lamé equation. Among other things, we prove that the isomonodromic equation is a new Hamiltonian system, which is equivalent to the elliptic form of Painlevé VI equation for generic parameters. For Painlevé VI equation with some special parameters, the isomonodr…
We apply the uniform asymptotics method proposed by Bassom, Clarkson, Law and McLeod to a special Painlevé V equation, and we provide a simpler and more rigorous proof of the connection formulas for a special solution of the equation, which have been established earlier by McCoy and Tang via the isomonodromy and WKB methods.
All of the six Painlevé equations except the first have families of rational solutions, which are frequently important in applications. The third Painlevé equation in generic form depends on two parameters $m$ and $n$, and it has rational solutions if and only if at least one of the parameters is an integer. We use known algebraic representations of the solutions to study numerically how the distributions of poles and zeros behave as $n\in\mathbb{Z}$ increases and how the patterns vary with $m\in\mathbb{C}$. This study suggests that it is reasonable to consider the rational solutions in the li…
The Painleve-IV equation has three families of rational solutions generated by the generalized Hermite polynomials. Each family is indexed by two positive integers m and n. These functions have applications to nonlinear wave equations, random matrices, fluid dynamics, and quantum mechanics. Numerical studies suggest the zeros and poles form a deformed n by m rectangular grid. Properly scaled, the zeros and poles appear to densely fill certain curvilinear rectangles as m and n tend to infinity with r=m/n fixed. Generalizing a method of Bertola and Bothner used to study rational Painleve-II func…
These are the lecture notes for a course on exceptional polynomials taught at the \textit{AIMS-Volkswagen Stiftung Workshop on Introduction to Orthogonal Polynomials and Applications} that took place in Douala (Cameroon) from October 5-12, 2018. They summarize the basic results and construction of exceptional poynomials, developed over the past ten years. In addition, some new results are presented on the construction of rational solutions to Painlevé equation PIV and its higher order generalizations that belong to the $A_{2n}^{(1)}$-Painlevé hierarchy. The construction is based on dressing ch…
In this paper, we consider polynomials orthogonal with respect to a varying perturbed Laguerre weight $e^{-n(z-\log z+t/z)}$ for $t<0$ and $z$ on certain contours in the complex plane. When the parameters $n$, $t$ and the degree $k$ are fixed, the Hankel determinant for the singular complex weight is shown to be the isomonodromy $τ$-function of the Painlevé III equation. When the degree $k=n$, $n$ is large and $t$ is close to a critical value, inspired by the study of the Wigner time delay in quantum transport, we show that the double scaling asymptotic behaviors of the recurrence coefficients…
The Painlevé-III equation with parameters $Θ_0=n+m$ and $Θ_\infty=m-n+1$ has a unique rational solution $u(x)=u_n(x;m)$ with $u_n(\infty;m)=1$ whenever $n\in\mathbb{Z}$. Using a Riemann-Hilbert representation proposed in \cite{BothnerMS18}, we study the asymptotic behavior of $u_n(x;m)$ in the limit $n\to+\infty$ with $m\in\mathbb{C}$ held fixed. We isolate an eye-shaped domain $E$ in the $y=n^{-1}x$ plane that asymptotically confines the poles and zeros of $u_n(x;m)$ for all values of the second parameter $m$. We then show that unless $m$ is a half-integer, the interior of $E$ is filled with …
In this paper we study different Hamiltonian systems with polynomial and rational Hamiltonians associated with the generic third Painlevé equation and present explicit birational transformations relating them.
We study the distribution of singularities (poles and zeros) of rational solutions of the Painlevé IV equation by means of the isomonodromic deformation method. Singularities are expressed in terms of the roots of generalised Hermite $H_{m,n}$ and generalised Okamoto $Q_{m,n}$ polynomials. We show that roots of generalised Hermite and Okamoto polynomials are described by an inverse monodromy problem for an anharmonic oscillator of degree two. As a consequence they turn out to be classified by the monodromy representation of a class of meromorphic functions with a finite number of singularities…
For the Schlesinger-type equation related to the fifth Painlevé equation (V) via isomonodromy deformation, we present a three-parameter family of matrix solutions along the imaginary axis near the point at infinity, and also the corresponding monodromy data. Two-parameter solutions of (V) with their monodromy data immediately follow from our results. Under certain conditions, these solutions of (V) admit sequences of zeros and of poles along the imaginary axis. The monodromy data are obtained by matching techniques for a perturbed linear system.
In this paper we study the integrability of the Hamiltonian system associated to the fourth Painlevé equation. We prove that one two parametric family of this Hamiltonian system is not integrable in the sense of the Liouville-Arnold theorem. Computing explicitly the Stokes matrices and the formal invariants of the second variational equations we deduce that the connected component of the unit element of the corresponding Galois grou is not Abelian. Thus the Morales-Ramis-Simó theory leads to a non-integrable result. Moreover, combining the new result with our previous one we establish that for…
