Magnetic monopoles in hyperbolic space are in correspondence with certain algebraic curves in mini-twistor space, known as spectral curves, which are in turn in correspondence with rational maps between Riemann spheres. Hyperbolic monopoles correspond to circle-invariant Yang-Mills instantons, with an identification of the monopole and instanton numbers, providing the curvature of hyperbolic space is tuned to a value specified by the asymptotic magnitude of the Higgs field. In previous work, constraints on ADHM instanton data have been identified that provide a non-canonical realization of the circle symmetry that preserves the standard action of rotations in the ball model of hyperbolic space. Here formulae are presented for the spectral curve and the rational map of a hyperbolic monopole in terms of its constrained ADHM matrix. This extends earlier results that apply only to the subclass of instantons of JNR type. The formulae are applied to obtain new explicit examples of spectral curves that are beyond the JNR class.
We investigate the Seiberg-Witten monopole equations on noncommutative(N.C.) R^4 at the large N.C. parameter limit, in terms of the equivariant cohomology. In other words, N}=2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theories with hypermultiplet on N.C. R}^4 are studied. It is known that after topological twisting partition functions of N}>1 supersymmetric theories on N.C. R^2D are invariant under N.C.parameter shift, then the partition functions can be calculated by its dimensional reduction. At the large N.C. parameter limit, the Seiberg-Witten monopole equations are reduced to ADHM equations with the Dir…
Hyperbolic monopole solutions can be obtained from circle-invariant ADHM data if the curvature of hyperbolic space is suitably tuned. Here we give explicit ADHM data corresponding to axial hyperbolic monopoles in a simple, tractable form, as well as expressions for the axial monopole fields. The data is deformed into new 1-parameter families preserving dihedral and twisted-line symmetries. In many cases explicit expressions are presented for their spectral curves and rational maps of both Donaldson and Jarvis type.
The ADHM construction is a very strong scheme to construct the instantons in four dimensions. We study an ADHM construction of instantons in $4n~(n\geq2)$ dimensions by generalizing this scheme. The higher-dimensional ADHM construction generates the $4n$-dimensional (anti-)self-dual instantons which satisfy the (anti-)self-dual equation in $4n$ dimensions: $F(n)=\pm\ast_{4n}F(n)$. Here $F(n)$ is the $n$th wedge products of the gauge field strength 2-form $F$. We also show that our scheme reproduces the known $4n$-dimensional one-instantons and there are multi-instanton solutions of the 't Hoof…
We show that the Higgs and gauge fields for a BPS monopole may be constructed directly from the spectral curve without having to solve the gauge constraint needed to obtain the Nahm data. The result is the analogue of the instanton result: given ADHM data one can reconstruct the gauge fields algebraically together with differentiation. Here, given the spectral curve, one can similarly reconstruct the Higgs and gauge fields. This answers a problem that has remained open since the discovery of monopoles.
Certain hyperbolic monopoles and all hyperbolic vortices can be constructed from SO(2) and SO(3) invariant Euclidean instantons, respectively. This observation allows us to describe a large class of hyperbolic monopoles as hyperbolic vortices embedded into $\mathbb{H}^3$ and yields a remarkably simple relation between the two Higgs fields. This correspondence between vortices and monopoles gives new insight into the geometry of the spectral curve and the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles. It also allows an explicit construction of the fields of a hyperbolic monopole invariant under a $\math…
The moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles are naturally fibred by the monopole mass, and this leads to a nontrivial mass dependence of the holomorphic data (spectral curves, rational maps, holomorphic spheres) associated to hyperbolic multi-monopoles. In this paper, we obtain an explicit description of this dependence for general hyperbolic monopoles of magnetic charge two. In addition, we show how to compute the monopole mass of higher charge spectral curves with tetrahedral and octahedral symmetries. Spectral curves of euclidean monopoles are recovered from our results via an infinite-mass l…
We consider 3-monopoles symmetric under inversion symmetry. We show that the moduli space of these monopoles is an Atiyah-Hitchin submanifold of the 3-monopole moduli space. This allows what is known about 2-monopole dynamics to be translated into results about the dynamics of 3-monopoles. Using a numerical ADHMN construction we compute the monopole energy density at various points on two interesting geodesics. The first is a geodesic over the two-dimensional rounded cone submanifold corresponding to right angle scattering and the second is a closed geodesic for three orbiting monopoles.
It is shown that there exists a charge five monopole with octahedral symmetry and a charge seven monopole with icosahedral symmetry. A numerical implementation of the ADHMN construction is used to calculate the energy density of these monopoles and surfaces of constant energy density are displayed. The charge five and charge seven monopoles look like an octahedron and a dodecahedron respectively. A scattering geodesic for each of these monopoles is presented and discussed using rational maps. This is done with the aid of a new formula for the cluster decomposition of monopoles when the poles o…
Hyperbolic monopole motion is studied for well separated monopoles. It is shown that the motion of a hyperbolic monopole in the presence of one or more fixed monopoles is equivalent to geodesic motion on a particular submanifold of the full moduli space. The metric on this submanifold is found to be a generalisation of the multi-centre Taub-NUT metric introduced by LeBrun. The one centre case is analysed in detail as a special case of a class of systems admitting a conserved Runge-Lenz vector. The two centre problem is also considered. An integrable classical string motion is exhibited.
We prove the conjecture that a monopole in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space can be completely determined by its ``holographic'' image on the conformal boundary two-sphere.
In a paper of Braam and Austin, $\text{SU}(2)$ magnetic monopoles in hyperbolic space $H^{3}$ were shown to be the same as solutions to matrix-valued difference equations called the discrete Nahm equations. Here, I discover the $(N-1)$-interval discrete Nahm equations and show that their solutions are equivalent to $\text{SU}(N)$ hyperbolic monopoles. These discrete time evolution equations on an interval feature a jump in matrix dimensions at certain points in the evolution, which are given by the mass data of the corresponding monopole. I prove the correspondence with higher rank hyperbolic …
In this work we study the dimensional reduction of smooth circle invariant Yang-Mills instantons defined on 4-manifolds which are non-trivial circle fibrations over hyperbolic 3-space. A suitable choice of the 4-manifold metric within a specific conformal class gives rise to singular and smooth hyperbolic monopoles. A large class of monopoles is obtained if the conformal factor satisfies the Helmholtz equation on hyperbolic 3-space. We describe simple configurations and relate our results to the JNR construction, for which we provide a geometric interpretation.
On a complete manifold, such as Euclidean 3-space or hyperbolic 3-space, the limit at infinity of the norm of the Higgs field is called the mass of the monopole. We show the existence, on hypebolic 3-space, of monopoles with given magnetic charge and arbitrary mass. Previously, aside from charge one monopoles, existence was known only for monopoles with integral mass (since these arise from U(1) invariant instantons on Euclidean 4-space). The method of proof is based on Taubes' gluing procedure, using well-separated, explicit, charge one monopoles. The analysis is carried out in a weighted Sob…
Using Seiberg-Witten theory it is known that the dynamics of N=2 supersymmetric SU(n) Yang-Mills theory is determined by a Riemann surface. In particular the mass formula for BPS states is given by the periods of a special differential on this surface. In this note we point out that the surface can be obtained from the quotient of a symmetric n-monopole spectral curve by its symmetry group. Known results about the Seiberg-Witten curves then implies that these monopoles are related to the Toda lattice. We make this relation explicit via the ADHMN construction. Furthermore, in the simplest case,…
We construct a number of explicit examples of hyperbolic monopoles, with various charges and often with some platonic symmetry. The fields are obtained from instanton data in four-dimensional Euclidean space that are invariant under a circle action, and in most cases the monopole charge is equal to the instanton charge. A key ingredient is the identification of a new set of constraints on ADHM instanton data that are sufficient to ensure the circle invariance. Unlike for Euclidean monopoles, the formulae for the squared Higgs field magnitude in the examples we construct are rational functions …
We study the correspondence between IIb solitonic 1-branes and monopoles in the context of the 3-brane realization of $D=4$ $N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We show that a bound state of 1-branes stretching between two separated 3-branes exhibits a family of super-symmetric ground states that can be identified with the ADHMN construction of the moduli space of $SU(2)$ monopoles.. This identification is supported by the construction of the monopole gauge field as a space-time coupling in the quantum mechanical effective action of a 1-brane used as a probe. The analysis also reveals an intriguing …
We investigate what supersymmetry says about the geometry of the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles. We construct a three-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs theory on hyperbolic space whose half-BPS configurations coincide with (complexified) hyperbolic monopoles. We then study the action of the preserved supersymmetry on the collective coordinates and show that demanding closure of the supersymmetry algebra constraints the geometry of the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles, turning it into a so-called pluricomplex manifold, thus recovering a recent result of Bielawski and Schwach…
Calorons (periodic instantons) are anti-self-dual (ASD) connections on S^1 \times R^3 and form an intermediate case between instantons and monopoles. The ADHM and Nahm constructions of instantons and monopoles can be regarded as generalizations of a correspondence between ASD connections on the 4-torus, often referred to as the Nahm transform. This thesis describes how the Nahm transform can be extended to the case of calorons. It is shown how calorons can be constructed from Nahm data similar to that for monopoles, but defined over the circle. The inverse transformation, from the caloron to t…
The ADHM construction, which yields (anti-)selfdual configurations in classical Yang-Mills theories, is applied to an infinite dimensional l^2 vector space, and as a consequence, a family of (anti-)selfdual configurations with a parameter q is obtained for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. This l^2 formulation can be seen as a q-analog of Nahm's monopole construction, so that the configuration approaches the BPS monopole at q->1 limit.
A large class of explicit hyperbolic monopole solutions can be obtained from JNR instanton data, if the curvature of hyperbolic space is suitably tuned. Here we provide explicit formulae for both the monopole spectral curve and its rational map in terms of JNR data. Examples with platonic symmetry are presented, together with some one-parameter families with cyclic and dihedral symmetries. These families include hyperbolic analogues of geodesics that describe symmetric monopole scatterings in Euclidean space and we illustrate the results with energy density isosurfaces. There is a metric on th…
We discuss the Euclidean limit of hyperbolic SU(2)-monopoles, framed at infinity, from the point of view of pluricomplex geometry. More generally, we discuss the geometry of hypercomplex manifolds arising as limits of pluricomplex manifolds.
We construct families of SO(3)-symmetric charge 1 instantons and calorons on the space H^3 x R. We show how the calorons include instantons and hyperbolic monopoles as limiting cases. We show how Euclidean calorons are the flat space limit of this family.
A magnetic bag is an abelian approximation to a large number of coincident SU(2) BPS monopoles. In this paper we consider magnetic bags in hyperbolic space and derive their Nahm transform from the large charge limit of the discrete Nahm equation for hyperbolic monopoles. An advantage of studying magnetic bags in hyperbolic space, rather than Euclidean space, is that a range of exact charge N hyperbolic monopoles can be constructed, for arbitrarily large values of N, and compared with the magnetic bag approximation. We show that a particular magnetic bag (the magnetic disc) provides a good desc…
Motivated by strong desire to understand the natural geometry of moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles, we introduce and study a new type of geometry: pluricomplex geometry. It is a generalisation of hypercomplex geometry: we still have a 2-sphere of complex structures, but they no longer behave like unit imaginary quaternions. We still require, however, that the 2-sphere of complex structures determines a decomposition of the complexified tangent space as tensor product of C^{2n} and C^2. Among interesting properties of pluricomplex manifold is the existence of a canonical torsion free connec…
Recently Jarvis has proved a correspondence between SU(N) monopoles and rational maps of the Riemann sphere into flag manifolds. Furthermore, he has outlined a construction to obtain the monopole fields from the rational map. In this paper we examine this construction in some detail and provide explicit examples for spherically symmetric SU(N) monopoles with various symmetry breakings. In particular we show how to obtain these monopoles from harmonic maps into complex projective spaces. The approach extends in a natural way to monopoles in hyperbolic space and we use it to construct new spheri…
The Atiyah-Hitchin manifold is the moduli space of parity inversion symmetric charge two SU(2) monopoles in Euclidean space. Here a hyperbolic analogue is presented, by calculating the boundary metric on the moduli space of parity inversion symmetric charge two SU(2) monopoles in hyperbolic space. The calculation of the metric is performed using a twistor description of the moduli space and the result is presented in terms of standard elliptic integrals.
I review an extension of the ADHMN construction of monopoles to M-brane models. This extended construction gives a map from solutions to the Basu-Harvey equation to solutions to the self-dual string equation transgressed to loop space. Loop spaces appear in fact quite naturally in M-brane models. This is demonstrated by translating a recently proposed M5-brane model to loop space. Finally, I comment on some recent developments related to the loop space approach to M-brane models.
The discrete Nahm equations, a system of matrix valued difference equations, arose in the work of Braam and Austin on half-integral mass hyperbolic monopoles. We show that the discrete Nahm equations are completely integrable in a natural sense: to any solution we can associate a spectral curve and a holomorphic line-bundle over the spectral curve, such that the discrete-time DN evolution corresponds to walking in the Jacobian of the spectral curve in a straight line through the line-bundle with steps of a fixed size. Some of the implications for hyperbolic monopoles are also discussed.
The geodesic approximation is a powerful method for studying the dynamics of BPS solitons. However, there are systems, such as BPS monopoles in three-dimensional hyperbolic space, where this approach is not applicable because the moduli space metric defined by the kinetic energy is not finite. In the case of hyperbolic monopoles, an alternative metric has been defined using the abelian connection on the sphere at infinity, but its relation to the dynamics of hyperbolic monopoles is unclear. Here this metric is placed in a more general context of boundary metrics on soliton moduli spaces. Examp…
There has been some recent interest in the study of non-abelian BPS monopoles in the limit of large magnetic charge. Most investigations have used a magnetic bag approximation, in which spherical symmetry is assumed within an abelian description. In particular, this approach has been used to suggest the existence of two types of magnetic bag, with differing distributions of the zeros of the Higgs field, together with multi-layer structures, containing several magnetic bags. This paper is concerned with the analogous situation of abelian BPS vortices in the hyperbolic plane, in the limit of lar…
This paper investigates an integrable system which is related to hyperbolic monopoles; ie the Bogomolny Yang-Mills-Higgs equations in (2+1) anti-de Sitter space which are integrable and whose solutions can be obtained using analytical methods. In particular, families of soliton solutions have been constructed explicitly and their dynamics has been investigated in some detail.

We define and compute the $L^2$ metric on the framed moduli space of circle invariant 1-instantons on the 4-sphere. This moduli space is four dimensional and our metric is $SO(3) \times U(1)$ symmetric. We study the behaviour of generic geodesics and show that the metric is geodesically incomplete. Circle-invariant instantons on the 4-sphere can also be viewed as hyperbolic monopoles, and we interpret our results from this viewpoint. We relate our results to work by Habermann on unframed instantons on the 4-sphere and, in the limit where the radius of the 4-sphere tends to infinity, to results…
