We discuss the phase dependent nonlocal thermoelectric effect in a topological Josephson junction in contact with a normal-metal probe. We show that, due to the helical nature of topological edge states, nonlocal thermoelectricity is generated by a purely Andreev interferometric mechanism. This response can be tuned by imposing a Josephson phase difference, through the application of a dissipationless current between the two superconductors, even without the need of applying an external magnetic field. We discuss in detail the origin of this effect and we provide also a realistic estimation of the nonlocal Seebeck coefficient that results of the order of few $μV/K$.
We report on a new type of Fano effect, named as Andreev-Fano effect, in a hybrid normal-metal / superconductor (N/S) interferometer embedded with a quantum dot. Compared with the conventional Fano effect, Andreev-Fano effect has some new features related to the characteristics of Andreev reflection. In the linear response regime, the line shape is the square of the conventional Fano shape; while in the nonlinear transport, a sharp resonant structure is superposed on an expanded interference pattern, qualitatively different from the conventional Fano effect. The phase dependence of the hybrid …
Quantum transport through a double Aharonov-Bohm-interferometer in the presence of Andreev reflection is investigated in terms of the nonequilibrium Green function method with which the reflection current is obtained. Tunable Andreev reflection probabilities depending on the interdot coupling strength and magnetic flux as well are analysised in detail. It is found that the oscillation period of the reflection probability with respect to the magnetic flux for the double interferometer depends linearly on the ratio of two parts magnetic fluxes n, i.e. 2(n+1)pi, while that of a single interferome…
We theoretically investigate coherent oscillations of the thermopower $\mathcal{S}$ as a function of the magnetic flux $Φ$ in six-terminal Andreev interferometers. We demonstrate that the thermopower behavior is determined by a number of contributions originating from the Josephson-like and Aharonov-Bohm-like effects as well as from electron-hole asymmetry. The relative weight of these contributions depends on the relation between temperature, voltage bias and an effective Thouless energy of our setup. We particularly emphasize the role of the system topology that may have a dramatic impact on…
We theoretically study how one can control and enhance nonlinear thermoelectricity by regulating quantum coherence in nanostructures such as a quantum dot system or a single-molecule junction. In nanostructures, the typical temperature scale is much smaller than the resonance width, which largely suppresses thermoelectric effects. Yet we demonstrate one can achieve a reasonably good thermoelectric performance by regulating quantum coherence. Engaging a quantum-dot interferometer (a quantum dot embedded in the ring geometry) as a heat engine, we explore the idea of thermoelectric enhancement in…
Using a local thermometry technique, we have been able to quantitatively measure the thermal resistance $R^T$ of diffusive Andreev interferometers. We find that $R^T$ is strongly enhanced from its normal state value at low temperatures, and behaves non-linearly as a function of the thermal current through the sample. We also find that the $R^T$ oscillates as a function of magnetic flux with a fundamental period corresponding to one flux quantum $Φ_0=h/2e$, demonstrating the phase coherent nature of thermal transport in these devices. The magnitude of $R^T$ is larger than predicted by recent nu…
We investigate nonlinear transport through quantum coherent metallic conductors contacted to superconducting components. We find that in certain geometries, the presence of superconductivity generates a large, finite-average rectification effect. Specializing to Andreev interferometers, we show that the direction and magnitude of rectification can be controlled by a magnetic flux tuning the superconducting phase difference at two contacts. In particular, this results in the breakdown of an Onsager reciprocity relation at finite bias. The rectification current is macroscopic in that it scales w…
We study the quantum interference (QI) effects in three-terminal Andreev interferometers based on polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) under non-equilibrium conditions. The Andreev interferometer consists of a PAH coupled to two superconducting and one normal conducting terminals. We calculate the current measured in the normal lead as well as the current between the superconducting terminals under non-equilibrium conditions. We show that both the QI arising in the PAH cores and the bias voltage applied to a normal contact have a fundamental effect on the charge distribution associated with the A…
We calculate the thermal conductance $G^T$ of diffusive Andreev interferometers, which are hybrid loops with one superconducting arm and one normal-metal arm. The presence of the superconductor suppresses $G^T$; however, unlike a conventional superconductor, $G^T/G^T_N$ does not vanish as the temperature $T\to0$, but saturates at a finite value that depends on the resistance of the normal-superconducting interfaces, and their distance from the path of the temperature gradient. The reduction of $G^T$ is determined primarily by the suppression of the density of states in the proximity-coupled no…
We study the thermopower of diffusive Andreev interferometers, which are hybrid loops with one normal-metal arm and one superconducting arm. The thermopower oscillates as a function of the magnetic flux through the loop with a fundamental period corresponding to one flux quantum $Φ_0=h/2e$. Unlike the electrical resistance oscillations and the thermal resistance oscillations, which are always symmetric with respect to the magnetic field, the symmetry of the thermopower oscillations can be either symmetric or antisymmetric depending on the geometry of the sample. We also observe that the symmet…
We investigate nonequilibrium noise in a diffusive Andreev interferometer, in which currents emerging from two Normal metal/Superconductor (N-S) interfaces can interfere. We observe a modulation of the shot noise when the phase difference between the two N-S interfaces is varied by a magnetic flux. This is the signature of phase-sensitive fluctuations in the normal metal. The effective charge inferred from the shot noise measurement is close to q_eff=2e but shows phase-dependent deviations from 2e at finite energy, which we interprete as due to pair correlations. Experimental data are in good …
Proximity induced quantum coherence of electrons in multi-terminal voltage-driven hybrid normal-superconducting nanostructures may result in a non-trivial interplay between topology-dependent Josephson and Aharonov-Bohm effects. We elucidate a trade-off between stimulation of the voltage-dependent Josephson current due to non-equilibrium effects and quantum dephasing of quasiparticles causing reduction of both Josephson and Aharonov-Bohm currents. We also predict phase-shifted quantum coherent oscillations of the induced electrostatic potential as a function of the externally applied magnetic …
We develop a quasiclassical theory of Andreev interferometers with three superconducting electrodes. Provided tunneling interface resistance between one superconducting electrode and the normal metal strongly exceeds two others, significant current sensitivity to the external magnetic flux is observed only at subgap voltages. If all barrier conductances are comparable, multiple Andreev reflection comes into play and substantial current modulation can be achieved in both subgap and overgap voltage regimes. Our analysis reveals a large variety of interesting features which can be used for perfor…
We theoretically investigate the behavior of Andreev interferometers with three superconducting electrodes in the current-biased regime. Our analysis allows to predict a number of interesting features of such devices, such as both hysteretic and non-hysteretic behavior, negative magnetoresistance and two different sets of singularities of the differential resistance at subgap voltages. In the non-hysteretic regime we find a pronounced voltage modulation with the magnetic flux which can be used for improving sensitivity of Andreev interferometers.
Using a new second derivative technique and thermometers which enable us to determine the local electron temperature in a mesoscopic metallic sample, we have obtained quantitative measurements of the low temperature field and temperature dependent thermopower of Andreev interferometers. As in previous experiments, the thermopower is found to oscillate as a function of magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the thermopower is nonmonotonic, with a minimum at a temperature of $\simeq0.5$ K. These results are discussed from the perspective of Andreev reflection at the normal-metal/supercond…
We consider transport in a diffusive cross-shaped Andreev interferometer geometry, both theoretically and experimentally. A strong and unexpected modulation of the conductance with the superconducting phase is found. In particular, a reversed resistance vs. phase difference is predicted, where the resistance is decreased by a phase gradient. A comparison of our quasiclassical calculation with experimental data shows quantitative agreement if we account for diamagnetic screening.
We propose an Andreev interferometer, based on a branched Y-junction, to detect the finite momentum pairing in Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superconductors. In this interferometer, the oscillation of subgap conductance is a unique function of phase difference between the two channels of the Y-junction, which is determined by the phase modulation of the order parameter in the FF superconductors. This interferometer has the potential not only to determine the magnitude but also the direction of the momentum of Cooper pairs in the FF superconductor. The possible applications of the interferometer in the id…
We report measurements of the thermopower S of mesoscopic Andreev interferometers, which are hybrid loops with one arm fabricated from a superconductor (Al), and one arm from a normal metal (Au). S depends on the phase of electrons in the interferometer, oscillating as a function of magnetic flux with a period of one flux quantum (= h/2e). The magnitude of S increases as the temperature T is lowered, reaching a maximum around T = 0.14 K, and decreases at lower temperatures. The symmetry of S oscillations with respect to magnetic flux depends on the topology of the sample.
We have investigated transport through graphene Andreev interferometers exhibiting reentrance of the superconducting proximity effect. We observed a crossover in the Andreev conductance oscillations as a function of gate voltage ($V_{BG}$). At high $V_{BG}$ the energy-dependent oscillation amplitude exhibits a scaling predicted for non-interacting electrons, which breaks down at low $V_{BG}$. The phenomenon is a manifestation of electron-electron interactions, whose main effect is to shorten the single-particle phase coherence time $τ_ϕ$. These results indicate that graphene provides a useful …
We report measurements of thermopower oscillations $vs$ magnetic field in a diffusive Andreev interferometer. Upon the increase of the dc current applied to the heater electrodes, the amplitude of these oscillations first increases then goes to zero as one would expect. Surprisingly, the oscillations reappear at yet higher heater currents with their phase being $π$-shifted compared to low current values. From direct measurements of the temperature gradient we estimate the amplitude of the oscillations to be orders of magnitude smaller than predicted by theory.
We investigate the nonlocal thermoelectric transport in a Cooper-pair splitter based on a double-quantum-dot-superconductor three-terminal hybrid structure. We find that the nonlocal coupling between the superconductor and the quantum dots gives rise to nonlocal thermoelectric effects which originate from the nonlocal particle-hole breaking of the system. We show that Cooper-pair splitting induces the generation of a thermo-current in the superconducting lead without any transfer of charge between the two normal metal leads. Conversely, we show that a nonlocal heat exchange between the normal …
It is shown that the spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions result in phase shifts of Andreev-reflected holes in disordered topological insulator, or normal Rashba spin-orbit-coupled wires, which are in a contact with an s-wave superconductor. Due to interference of the holes reflected through different paths in Andreev interferometer the electric current through the contact varies depending on the strength and direction of the Zeeman field. It also depends on mutual orientations of Zeeman fields in different shoulders of the interferometer. Such a nonlocal effect is a result of the long-range coh…
We report the realization and investigation of a ballistic Andreev interferometer based on an InAs two dimensional electron gas coupled to a superconducting Nb loop. We observe strong magnetic modulations in the voltage drop across the device due to quasiparticle interference within the weak-link. The interferometer exhibits flux noise down to $\sim 80\, μΦ_0/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$, and a robust behavior in temperature with voltage oscillations surviving up to $\sim7\,$K. Besides this remarkable performance, the device represents a crucial first step for the realization of a fully-tunable ballist…
Andreev interferometers, normal metal wires coupled to superconducting loops, display phase coherent changes as the magnetic flux through the superconducting loops is altered. Properties such as the electronic and thermal conductance of these devices have been shown to oscillate symmetrically about zero with a period equal to one superconducting flux quantum, $Φ_o = h/2e$. However, the thermopower of these devices can oscillate symmetrically or antisymmetrically depending on the geometry of the sample, a phenomenon not well understood theoretically. Here we report on thermopower measurements o…
We experimentally study the influence of 1-40 GHz radiation on the resistance of normal (N) mesoscopic conductors coupled to superconducting (S) loops (Andreev interferometers). At low RF amplitudes we observe the usual h/2e superconducting-phase-periodic resistance oscillations as a function of applied magnetic flux. We find that the oscillations acquire a pi-shift with increasing RF amplitude, and consistent with this result the resistance at fixed phase is an oscillating function of the RF amplitude. The results are explained qualitatively as a consequence of two processes. The first is the…

Anomalously large thermopower of mesoscopic normal-metal/superconductor interferometers has been investigated by Chandrasekhar et al. It was shown that, depending on the geometry of the interferometer, the thermopower is either symmetric or antisymmetric periodic function of the magnetic flux. We develop a detailed theory of the observed thermoelectric phenomena in the framework of the non-equilibrium quasiclassical approach. In particular we provide, for the first time, a possible explanation of the symmetric thermopower oscillations. This effect is attributed to the electron-hole symmetry vi…
We investigate thermoelectric transport through Andreev interferometers. We show that the ratio of the thermal and the charge conductance exhibits large oscillations with the phase difference $ϕ$ between the two superconducting contacts, and that the Wiedemann-Franz law holds only when $ϕ=π$. A large average thermopower furthermore emerges whenever there is an asymmetry in the dwell times to reach the superconducting contacts. When this is the case, the thermopower is odd in $ϕ$. In contrast, when the average times to reach either superconducting contact are the same, the average thermopower i…
The Andreev spectrum of a quantum dot embedded in a hybrid semiconductor-superconductor interferometer can be modulated by electrostatic gating, magnetic flux through the interferometer, and Zeeman splitting from in-plane magnetic field. We demonstrate parity transitions in the embedded quantum dot system, and show that the Zeeman-driven transition is accompanied by a 0-π transition in the superconducting phase across the dot. We further demonstrate that flux through the interferometer modulates both dot parity and 0-π transitions.

In modern experiments with hybrid superconducting (SC)/semiconducting nanowires the presence of zero-energy Andreev bound states (ABSs), characterized by a partial overlap of the Majorana wave functions, is a common problem that significantly complicates the detection of a genuine Majorana bound state (MBS). In this article, taking into account spatial inhomogeneity of experimentally investigated nanowire samples, we study interference transport features of a curved heterostructure in which two normal wires (or arms) are separated by a superconducting wire. Since Andreev reflection on the two …
Recent development in fabrication of hybrid nanostructures allows for creation of quantum interferometers that combine semiconductor and superconductor materials. We show that in those nanostructures the joint phenomena of Aharonov-Bohm effect and Andreev reflections can be used to determine the length on which the electron is retro-reflected as a hole. We propose to exploit this feature for probing of the quasiparticle coherence length in semiconductor-superconductor hybrids by a magnetoconductance measurement.
Using the extraordinary sensitivity of Andreev interferometers to the superconducting phase difference associated with currents, we measure the persistent current quantum states in superconducting loops interrupted by Josephson junctions. Straightforward electrical resistance measurements of the interferometers give continuous read-out of the states, allowing us to construct the energy spectrum of the quantum circuit. The probe is estimated to be more precise and faster than previous methods, and can measure the local phase difference in a wide range of superconducting circuits.
We examine the thermopower Q of a mesoscopic normal-metal (N) wire in contact to superconducting (S) segments and show that even with electron-hole symmetry, Q may become finite due to the presence of supercurrents. Moreover, we show how the dominant part of Q can be directly related to the equilibrium supercurrents in the structure. We also discuss the thermopower arising due to an anomalous kinetic coefficient which is finite in the presence of supercurrent and in some situations gives the dominant contribution. In general, a finite thermopower appears both between the N reservoirs and the s…
The dynamics of a superconducting quantum point contact biased at subgap voltages is shown to be strongly affected by a microwave electromagnetic field. Interference among a sequence of temporally localized, microwave-induced Landau-Zener transitions between current carrying Andreev levels results in energy absorption and in an increase of the subgap current by several orders of magnitude. The contact is an interferometer in the sense that the current is an oscillatory function of the inverse bias voltage. Possible applications to Andreev-level spectroscopy and microwave detection are discusse…
We calculate analytically the current statistics for a short diffusive wire between the normal reservoir and a short superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junction, at arbitrary applied voltages and temperatures. The cumulant-generating function oscillates with the phase difference $ϕ$ across the junction, approaching the normal-state value at $ϕ=π$. At T=0 and at the applied voltage much smaller than the proximity gap $Δ_ϕ$, the current noise $P_I$ doubles and the third current cumulant $C_3$ is 4 times larger with respect to their values in the normal state; at $eV \gg Δ_ϕ$ they a…
We investigate the conductance through and the spectrum of ballistic chaotic quantum dots attached to two s-wave superconductors, as a function of the phase difference $ϕ$ between the two order parameters. A combination of analytical techniques -- random matrix theory, Nazarov's circuit theory and the trajectory-based semiclassical theory -- allows us to explore the quantum-to-classical crossover in detail. When the superconductors are not phase-biased, $ϕ=0$, we recover known results that the spectrum of the quantum dot exhibits an excitation gap, while the conductance across two normal leads…
Giant oscillations of the conductance of a superconductor - ferromagnet - superconductor Andreev interferometer are predicted. The effect is due to the resonant transmission of normal electrons through Andreev levels when the voltage $V$ applied to the ferromagnet is close to $2h_0/e$ ($h_0$ is the spin-dependant part of the electron energy). The effect of bias voltage and phase difference between the superconductors on the current and the differential conductance is presented. These efects allow a direct spectroscopy of Andreev levels in the ferromagnet.
We study one dimensional Bose liquids of interacting ultracold atoms in the Y-shaped potential when each branch is filled with atoms. We find that the excitation packet incident on a single Y-junction should experience a negative density reflection analogous to the Andreev reflection at normal-superconductor interfaces, although the present system does not contain fermions. In a ring interferometer type configuration, we find that the transport is completely insensitive to the (effective) flux contained in the ring, in contrast to the Aharonov-Bohm effect of a single particle in the same geome…
Non-linear electrodynamics of a ring-shaped Andreev interferometer (superconductor-normal conductor-superconductor hybrid structure) inductively coupled to a circuit of the dissipative current is investigated. The current-voltage characteristics (CVC) is demonstrated to be a series of loops with several branches intersecting in the CVC origin. The sensitivity of the transport current to a change of the applied external magnetic flux can be comparable to the one of the conventional SQUID's. Spontaneous arising of coupled non-linear oscillations of the transport current, the Josephson current an…
In an unconventional superconductor, the interplay of scattering off impurities and Andreev processes may lead to different scattering times for electronlike and holelike quasiparticles. Such electron-hole asymmetry appears when the impurity scattering phase shift is intermediate between the Born and unitary limits and leads to an expectation for large thermoelectric effects. Here, we examine the thermoelectric response of a $d$-wave superconductor connected to normal-metal reservoirs under a temperature bias using a fully self-consistent quasiclassical theory. The thermoelectrically induced q…
We investigate the properties of complex mesoscopic superconducting-normal hybrid devices, Andreev-Interferometers in the case, where the current is proped through a superconducting tunneling contact whereas the proximity effect is generated by a transparent SN-interface. We show within the quasiclassical Green's functions technique, how the fundamental SNIS-element of the such structures can be mapped onto an effective S$^\prime$IS-junction, where S$^\prime$ is the proximised material with an effective energy gap $E_g<Δ$. We propose the Andreev-Interferometer, where $E_g$ can be tuned by an e…
We consider an interferometer based on artificially induced topological superconductivity and chiral 1D Majorana fermions. The (non-topological) superconducting island inducing the superconducting correlations in the topological substrate is assumed to be floating. This allows probing the physics of interfering Majorana modes via microwave response, i.e., the frequency dependent impedance between the island and the earth. Namely, charging and discharging of the island is controlled by the time-delayed interference of chiral Majorana excitations in both normal and Andreev channels. We argue tha…
We present an exhaustive theoretical analysis of a double-loop Josephson proximity interferometer, as the one recently realized by Strambini et al. for the control of the Andreev spectrum via an external magnetic field. This system, called $ω$-SQUIPT, consists of a T-shaped diffusive normal metal (N) attached to three superconductors (S) forming a double loop configuration. By using the quasiclassical Green function formalism, we calculate the local normalized density of states, the Josephson currents through the device and the dependence of the former on the length of the junction arms, the a…
