We give an upper-bound for the $X$-rank of points with respect to a non-degenerate irreducible variety $X$ in the case that sub-generic $X$-rank points generate a hypersurface. We give examples where this bound is sharp and it improves the existing ones.
We propose a new method, using deformation theory, to study the maximal rank conjecture. For line bundles of extremal degree, which can be viewed as the first case to test the conjecture, we prove that maximal rank conjecture holds by our new method.
Let C be a general curve of genus g, embedded in P^r via a general linear series of degree d. In this paper, we prove the Maximal Rank Conjecture, which determines the Hilbert function of C.
In this note, we give an overview of a new technique for studying Brill--Noether curves in projective space via degeneration. In particular, we give a roadmap to the proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture.
Currently there are several approaches to resolution of singularities in positive characteristic all of which have hit some obstruction. One natural idea is to try to construct new meaningful examples at this point to gain a wider range of experience. To produce such examples we mimic the characteristic zero approach and focus on cases where it fails. In particular, this short note deals with an example-driven study of failure of maximal contact and the search for an appropriate replacement.
A Kac-Moody algebra is called hyperbolic if it corresponds to a generalized Cartan matrix of hyperbolic type. We study root subsystems of root systems of hyperbolic algebras. In this paper, we classify maximal rank regular hyperbolic subalgebras of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras.
Let be a general curve of genus g embedded via a general linear series of degree d in P^r. The well-known Maximal Rank Conjecture asserts that the restriction maps H^0(O_{P^r}(m)) \to H^0(O_C(m) are of maximal rank; if known, this conjecture would determine the Hilbert function of C. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement for the hyperplane sections of unions general curves. More specifically, if H is a general hyperplane, we show that H^0(O_H(m)) \to H^0(O_{(C_1 \cup C_2 \cup \cdots \cup C_n) \cap H}(m)) is of maximal rank, except for some counterexamples when m = 2. As explained in a…
Building on our earlier results on tropical independence and shapes of divisors in tropical linear series, we give a tropical proof of the maximal rank conjecture for quadrics. We also prove a tropical analogue of Max Noether's theorem on quadrics containing a canonically embedded curve, and state a combinatorial conjecture about tropical independence on chains of loops that implies the maximal rank conjecture for algebraic curves.
We prove the following statement, which has been conjectured since 1985: There exists a constant $K$ such that for all natural numbers $d,g$ with $g\le Kd^{3/2}$ there exists an irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme of $\mathbb{P}^3$ whose general element is a smooth, connected curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ of maximal rank.
At the time of writing, the general problem of finding the maximal Waring rank for homogeneous polynomials of fixed degree and number of variables (or, equivalently, the maximal symmetric rank for symmetric tensors of fixed order and in fixed dimension) is still unsolved. To our knowledge, the answer for ternary quartics is not widely known and can only be found among the results of a master's thesis by Johannes Kleppe at the University of Oslo (1999). In the present work we give a (direct) proof that the maximal rank for plane quartics is seven, following the elementary geometric idea of spli…
We give a complete classification of semistable rank two sheaves on three-dimensional projective space with maximal third Chern character. This implies an explicit description of their moduli spaces. As an open subset they contain rank two reflexive sheaves with maximal number of singularities. These spaces are irreducible, and apart from a single special case, they are also smooth. This extends a result by Okonek and Spindler to all missing cases and gives a new proof of their result. The key technical ingredient is variation of stability in the derived category.
We study the real rank of points with respect to a real variety $X$. This is a generalization of various tensor ranks, where $X$ is in a specific family of real varieties like Veronese or Segre varieties. The maximal real rank can be bounded in terms of the codimension of $X$ only. We show constructively that there exist varieties $X$ for which this bound is tight. The same varieties provide examples where a previous bound of Blekherman-Teitler on the maximal $X$-rank is tight. We also give examples of varieties $X$ for which the gap between maximal complex and the maximal real rank is arbitra…
Shioda described in his article from 1986 a method to compute the Lefschetz number of a Delsarte surface. In one of his examples he uses this method to compute the rank of an elliptic curve over k(t). In this article we find all elliptic curves over k(t) for which his method is applicable. For each of these curves we also compute the Mordell-Weil rank.
In this note, I review an aspect of some new techniques introduced recently in collaboration with Miguel Ángel Barja and Rita Pardini: the construction of the continuous rank function. I give a sketch of how to use this function to prove the Barja-Clifford-Pardini-Severi inequalities for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension and to obtain the classification of varieties satisfying the equalities.
We develop new methods to study tropicalizations of linear series and show linear independence of sections. Using these methods, we prove two new cases of the strong maximal rank conjecture for linear series of degree 25 and 26 on curves of genus 22 and 23, respectively.
We describe applications of Koszul cohomology to the Brill-Noether theory of rank 2 vector bundles. Among other things, we show that in every genus g>10, there exist curves invalidating Mercat's Conjecture for rank 2 bundles. On the other hand, we prove that Mercat's Conjecture holds for general curves of bounded genus, and its failure locus is a Koszul divisor in the moduli space of curves. We also formulate a conjecture concerning the minimality of Betti diagrams of suitably general curves, and point out its consequences to rank 2 Brill-Noether theory.
For any two integers $k,n$, $2\leq k\leq n$, let $f:(\mathbb{C}^*)^n\rightarrow\mathbb{C}^k$ be a generic polynomial map with given Newton polytopes. It is known that points, whose fiber under $f$ has codimension one, form a finite set $C_1(f)$ in $\mathbb{C}^k$. For maps $f$ above, we show that $C_1(f)$ is empty if $k\geq 3$, we classify all Newton polytopes contributing to $C_1(f)\neq \emptyset$ for $k=2$, and we compute $|C_1(f)|$.
The ordinary algebraic curves of maximal rank are also the arithmetically Cohen-Maccaulay curves of minimal rank. We give sufficient conditions for such curves to exist as well as examples, generalizing results of [GHL] in the dimension three.
In this note, we characterize certain maximal superspecial curves of genus $5$ over finite fields. Specifically, we prove that the desingularization $T_p$ of $x y z^3 + x^5 + y^5 = 0$ is a maximal superspecial trigonal curve of genus $5$ if and only if $p \equiv -1 \pmod{15}$ or $p \equiv 11 \pmod{15}$. Moreover, we give families of maximal curves of more general type, which include $T_p$.
We show that the Weierstrass points of the generic curve of genus $g$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 generate a group of maximal rank in the Jacobian.
In this paper, we compute the cohomology class of certain "special maximal-rank loci" originally defined by Aprodu and Farkas. By showing that such classes are nonzero, we are able to verify the non-emptiness portion of the Strong Maximal Rank Conjecture in a wide range of cases. As an application, we obtain new evidence for the existence portion of a well-known conjecture due to Bertram, Feinberg and independently Mukai in higher-rank Brill--Noether theory.
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety of dimension $n$ and $G$ an abelian group of automorphisms such that all elements of $G\setminus \{\mathrm{id}\}$ are of positive entropy. Dinh and Sibony showed that $G$ is actually free abelian of rank $\le n - 1$. The maximal rank case has been well understood by De-Qi Zhang. We aim to characterize the pair $(X, G)$ such that $\mathrm{rank} G = n - 2$.
With a grading previously introduced by the second-named author, the multiplication maps in the preprojective algebra satisfy a maximal rank property that is similar to the maximal rank property proven by Hochster and Laksov for the multiplication maps in the commutative polynomial ring. The result follows from a more general theorem about the maximal rank property of a minimal almost split morphism, which also yields a quadratic inequality for the dimensions of indecomposable modules involved.
We show that the linear map defined by multiplication with a general bi-homogeneous form between two bi-graduated pieces of the first cohomology of a nonsingular quadric in the projective space is of maximal rank. This is the first non trivial case of a more general open problem on natural linear maps between vector spaces of tensors defined in terms of multiplications and contractions. An interpretation in terms of bi-homogeneous linear differential operators with polynomial coefficients is also given.
In what follows, we pose two general conjectures about decompositions of homogeneous polynomials as sums of powers. The first one (suggested by G. Ottaviani) deals with the generic k-rank of complex-valued forms of any degree divisible by k in any number of variables. The second one (by the fourth author) deals with the maximal k-rank of binary forms. We settle the first conjecture in the cases of two variables and the second in the first non-trivial case of the 3-rd powers of quadratic binary forms.
In this note, we study the normal compact Kähler (possibly singular) threefold $X$ admitting the action of a free abelian group $G$ of maximal rank, all the non-trivial elements of which are of positive entropy. If such $X$ is further assumed to have only terminal singularities, then we prove that it is either a rationally connected projective threefold or bimeromorphic to a quasi-étale quotient of a complex $3$-torus.
We determine positive-dimensional G-periodic proper subvarieties of an n-dimensional normal projective variety X under the action of an abelian group G of maximal rank n-1 and of positive entropy. The motivation of the paper is to understand the obstruction for X to be G-equivariant birational to the quotient variety of an abelian variety modulo the action of a finite group.
For an automorphism group G on an n-dimensional (n > 2) normal projective variety or a compact Kähler manifold X so that G modulo its subgroup N(G) of null entropy elements is an abelian group of maximal rank n-1, we show that N(G) is virtually contained in Aut_0(X), the X is a quotient of a complex torus T and G is mostly descended from the symmetries on the torus T, provided that both X and the pair (X, G) are minimal.
We confirm, to some extent, the belief that a projective variety X has the largest number (relative to the dimension of X) of independent commuting automorphisms of positive entropy only when X is birational to a complex torus or a quotient of a torus. We also include an addendum to an early paper though it is not used in the present paper.
Let $N_1, \ldots, N_d$ be positive integers with $N_1\leq\cdots\leq N_d$. Set $N=N_1\cdots N_{d-1}$. We show in this paper that an integer $r$ is a typical nonnegative rank of nonnegative tensors of format $N_1\times\cdots\times N_d$ if and only if $r\leq N$ and $r$ is greater than or equals to the generic rank of tensors over $\mathbb{C}$ of format $N_1\times\cdots\times N_d$. We also show that the maximal nonnegative rank of nonnegative tensors of format $N_1\times\cdots\times N_d$ is $N$.
We show that the algebraic rank of divisors on certain graphs is related to the realizability problem of matroids. As a consequence, we produce a series of examples in which the algebraic rank depends on the ground field. We use the theory of metrized complexes to show that equality between the algebraic and combinatorial rank is not a sufficient condition for smoothability of divisors, thus giving a negative answer to a question posed by Caporaso, Melo, and the author.
In this paper we study the complex simultaneous Waring rank for collections of monomials. For general collections we provide a lower bound, whereas for special collections we provide a formula for the simultaneous Waring rank. Our approach is algebraic and combinatorial. We give an application to ranks of binomials and maximal simultaneous ranks. Moreover, we include an appendix of scripts written in the algebra software Macaulay2 to experiment with simultaneous ranks.
Up until now, it was recognized that a large number of 2-torsion points was a technical barrier to improve the bounds for the symmetric tensor rank of multiplication in every extension of any finite field. In this paper, we show that there are two exceptional cases, namely the extensions of $\mathbb{F}_2$ and $\mathbb{F}_3$. In particular, using the definition field descent on the field with 2 or 3 elements of a Garcia-Stichtenoth tower of algebraic function fields which is asymptotically optimal in the sense of Drinfel'd-Vladut and has maximal Hasse-Witt invariant, we obtain a significant imp…
