Rapid progress in the development of metasurfaces allowed to replace bulky optical assemblies with thin nanostructured films, often called metasurfaces, opening a broad range of novel and superior applications to the generation, manipulation, and detection of light in classical optics. Recently, these developments started making a headway in quantum photonics, where novel opportunities arose for the control of nonclassical nature of light, including photon statistics, quantum state superposition, quantum entanglement, and single-photon detection. In this Perspective, we review recent progress in the field of quantum-photonics applications of metasurfaces, focusing on innovative and promising approaches to create, manipulate, and detect nonclassical light.
Dielectric metasurfaces with spatially varying birefringence and high transmission efficiency can exhibit exceptional abilities for controlling the photonic spin states. We present here some of our works on spin photonics and spin-photonic devices with metasurfaces. We develop a hybrid-order Poincare sphere to describe the evolution of spin states of wave propagation in the metasurface. Both the Berry curvature and the Pancharatnam-Berry phase on the hybrid-order Poincare sphere are demonstrated to be proportional to the variation of total angular momentum. Based on the spin-dependent property…
Observation of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) in dielectric-based metasurfaces with rotational symmetry breaking is presented. We find that the spin-dependent splitting is a unique angular splitting in the real position space, and is attributed to the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PB). Breaking the rotational symmetry of the PB phase by misalignment of the central axes of the incident beam and the metasurface, the spin-dependent shift is observable. We show that the spin-dependent shift can be enhanced by increasing the rotation rate of the metasurface, so the metasurface provides a…
Metasurfaces are a key photonic platform to manipulate classical light using sub-wavelength structures with designer optical response. Static metasurfaces have recently entered the realm of quantum photonics, showing their ability to tailor nonclassical states of light. We introduce the concept of space-time quantum metasurfaces for dynamical control of quantum light. We provide illustrative examples of the impact of spatio-temporally modulated metasurfaces in quantum photonics, including the creation of frequency-spin-path hyperentanglement on a single photon and the realization of space-time…
Zak phase labels the topological property of one-dimensional Bloch Bands. Here we propose a scheme and experimentally measure the Zak phase in a photonic system. The Zak phase of a bulk band of is related to the topological properties of the two band gaps sandwiching this band, which in turn can be inferred from the existence or absence of an interface state. Using reflection spectrum measurement, we determined the existence of interface states in the gaps, and then obtained the Zak phases. The knowledge of Zak phases can also help us predict the existence of interface states between a metasur…
Photonic metasurfaces are ultrathin electromagnetic wave-molding metamaterials providing the missing link for the integration of nanophotonic chips with nanoelectronic circuits. An extra twist in this field originates from spin-optical metasurfaces providing the photon spin (polarization helicity) as an additional degree of freedom in light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Here we report on a generic concept to control the photonic transport by disordered (random) metasurfaces with a custom-tailored geometric phase. This approach combines the peculiarity of random patterns to support extr…
We develop an analytical framework for self-stabilizing optical manipulation of freestanding metasurfaces in three dimensions. Our framework reveals that the challenging problem of stabilization against translational and rotational perturbations in three dimensions is reduced to a simpler scattering analysis of the metasurface unit cell in two dimensions. We derive universal analytical stiffness coefficients applicable to arbitrary three-dimensional radial metasurfaces and radial beam intensity profiles. The analytical nature of our framework facilitates highly efficient discovery of optimal o…
Topological phases of light exhibit unique properties beyond the realm of conventional photonics. In particular the valley-Hall topological insulator has been realized in a variety of photonic structures because it can be easily induced by breaking certain lattice symmetries. However, the valley-Chern numbers are usually fixed by design and the corresponding topological edge states are forced to propagate in a fixed direction. Here, we propose a mechanism to induce topological transitions via accidental Dirac points in metasurfaces composed of interacting dipole emitters/antennas. For a fixed …
Metasurfaces provide the disruptive technology enabling miniaturization of complex cascades of optical elements on a plane. We leverage the benefits of such a surface to develop a planar integrated photonic beam collimator for on-chip optofluidic sensing applications. While most of the current work focuses on miniaturizing the optical "detection" hardware, little attention is given to develop on-chip hardware for optical "excitation". In this manuscript, we propose a flat metasurface for beam collimation in optofluidic applications. We implement an inverse design approach to optimize the metas…
Engineering the dispersion of light in a metasurface allows for controlling the light-matter interaction strength between light confined in the metasurface and materials placed within its near-field. Specifically, engineering a flatband dispersion increases the photonic density of states thereby enhancing the light-matter interaction. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a metasurface with a flat dispersion at visible wavelengths. We designed and fabricated a suspended one-dimensional gallium phosphide metasurface and measured the photonic band structure via energy-momentum spectroscopy, observ…
Typically, photonic waveguides designed for nonlinear frequency conversion rely on intuitive and established principles, including index guiding and band gap engineering, and are based on simple shapes with high degrees of symmetry. We show that recently developed inverse-design techniques can be applied to discover new kinds of microstructured fibers and metasurfaces designed to achieve large nonlinear frequency conversion efficiencies. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate complex, wavelengthscale chalcogenide glass fibers and gallium phosphide metasurfaces exhibiting some of the largest n…
We study nonlinear effects in two-dimensional photonic metasurfaces supporting topologically-protected helical edge states at the nanoscale. We observe strong third-harmonic generation mediated by optical nonlinearities boosted by multipolar Mie resonances of silicon nanoparticles. Variation of the pump-beam wavelength enables independent high-contrast imaging of either bulk modes or spin-momentum-locked edge states. We demonstrate topology-driven tunable localization of the generated harmonic fields and map the pseudospin-dependent unidirectional waveguiding of the edge states bypassing sharp…
The emerging applications of silicon photonics in free space, such as LiDARs and quantum photonics, urge versatile emission shaping beyond the capabilities of conventional grating couplers. A platform that offers arbitrary shaping of free-space emission while maintaining the CMOS compatibility and monolithic integration is in pressing need. Here we demonstrate a platform that integrates metasurfaces monolithically on silicon photonic integrated circuits. The metasurfaces consist of amorphous silicon nanopillars evanescently coupled to silicon waveguides. We demonstrate experimentally diffracti…
In the recent decade, the research field using arrays of high-index-contrast near-wavelength dieletric structures on flat surfaces, known as high-contrast metastructures (HCMs) or metasurfaces, has emerged and expanded rapidly. Although the HCMs and metasurfaces share great similarities in physical structures with photonic crystals (PhCs), i.e. periodic nanostructures, many differences exist in their design, analysis, operation conditions, and applications. In this paper, we provide a generalized theoretical understanding of the two subjects and show their intrinsic connections. We further dis…
Conventional photonic lattices, such as metamaterials and photonic crystals, exhibit various interesting physical properties that are attributed to periodic modulations in lattice parameters. In this study, we introduce novel types of photonic lattices, namely Fourier-component-engineered metasurfaces, that do not possess the first Fourier harmonic component in the lattice parameters. We demonstrate that these metasurfaces support the continuous high-$Q$ bound states near second stop bands. The concept of engineering Fourier harmonic components in periodic modulations provides a new method to …
Topological photonic systems represent a new class of optical materials supporting boundary modes with unique properties, not found in conventional photonics. While the early research on topological photonics has focused on edge and surface modes in 2D and 3D systems, respectively, recently higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) supporting lower-dimensional boundary states have been introduced. In this work we design and experimentally realize a photonic kagome metasurface exhibiting a Wannier-type higher-order topological phase. We demonstrate and visualize the emergence of a topological…
Photonic band structures are a typical fingerprint of periodic optical structures, and are usually observed in spectroscopic quantities such as transmission, reflection and absorption. Here we show that also the chiro-optical response of a metasurface constituted by a lattice of non-centrosymmetric, L-shaped holes in a dielectric slab shows a band structure, where intrinsic and extrinsic chirality effects are clearly recognized and connected to localized and delocalized resonances. Superchiral near-fields can be excited in correspondence to these resonances, and anomalous behaviors as a functi…

We show that a metasurface-coated two-dimensional (2D) slab waveguide enables the generation of arbitrary complex light fields by combining the extreme versatility and freedom on wavefront control of optical metasurfaces with the compactness of photonic integrated circuits. We demonstrated off-chip 2D focusing and holographic projection with our metasurface-dressed photonic integrated devices. This technology holds the potential for many other optical applications requiring 2D light field manipulation with full on-chip integration, such as solid-state LiDAR and near-eye AR/VR displays.
The propagation of light through a random medium is an important problem in photonics. When the random fluctuations of the orientation for individual rods were introduced to the ideal woodpile photonic structure, a crossover from Laue diffraction to randomly scattered fields which is similar in appearance to speckle patterns was observed and investigated. Unexpected interplay between order and disorder was discovered from anisotropic glassy samples when orientational disorder was added only in one direction of square woodpile structure. It is found that the ordered sets of rods produced disord…

Metasurfaces with unparalleled controllability of light have shown great potential to revolutionize conventional optics. However, they mainly work with free-space light input, which makes it difficult for full on-chip integration. On the other hand, integrated photonics enables densely packed devices but has limited free-space light controllability. Here, we show that judiciously designed guided-wave-driven metasurfaces can mold guided waves into arbitrary free-space modes to achieve complex free-space functions, such as beam steering and focusing, with ultrasmall footprints and potentially no…

Elusive features in photonic and electronic devices can be detected by means of advanced, time-domain spectroscopic techniques. In this letter we introduce a novel kind of modulation spectroscopy, based on the optomechanical interaction of photonic and mechanical modes. Applying the technique to a Si metasurface and its drum-like mechanical modes, we detect narrow-band quasi-Bound-State-in-the-Continuum (q-BIC) modes close to normal incidence, where their measurement can be hindered by a high symmetry protection and undesired background modes. Showing a visibility enhancement of more than one …

The ability to couple the valley degree of freedom of electrons with light can further expand the ways one manipulate this degree of freedom, thus envisioning a new class of solid-state-photonic interfaces and devices. Optical metasurfaces open new avenues for precise wavefront control of light for integrated quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated quantum photonic system that is capable to entangle and disentangle two-photon spin states at a dielectric metasurface. By interfering single-photon pairs at a nanostructured dielectric metasurface, a path-entangled two-photon NOON state with circular polarization is generated that exhibits a quantum HOM interference visibility of 86 $\pm$ 4%. Furthermore, we demonstrate nonclassicality and phase sensitivity in a metasurface-based interferomet…
Creating materials with time-variant properties is critical for breaking reciprocity that imposes fundamental limitations to wave propagation. However, it is challenging to realize efficient and ultrafast temporal modulation in a photonic system. Here, leveraging both spatial and temporal phase manipulation offered by an ultrathin nonlinear metasurface, we experimentally demonstrated nonreciprocal light reflection at wavelengths around 860 nm. The metasurface, with traveling-wave modulation upon nonlinear Kerr building blocks, creates spatial phase gradient and multi-terahertz temporal phase w…

We study semi-analytically the light emission and absorption properties of arbitrary stratified photonic structures with embedded two-dimensional magnetoelectric point scattering lattices, as used in recent plasmon-enhanced LEDs and solar cells. By employing dyadic Green's function for the layered structure in combination with Ewald lattice summation to deal with the particle lattice, we develop an efficient method to study the coupling between planar 2D scattering lattices of plasmonic, or metamaterial point particles, coupled to layered structures. Using the `array scanning method' we deal w…
Polarization beam splitters, devices that separate the two orthogonal polarizations of light into different propagation directions, are one of the most ubiquitous optical elements. However, traditionally polarization splitters rely on bulky optical materials, while emerging optoelectronic and photonic circuits require compact, chip-scale polarization splitters. Here we show that a subwavelength rectangular lattice of cylindrical silicon Mie resonators functions as a polarization splitter, efficiently reflecting one polarization while transmitting the other. We show that the polarization splitt…

In this paper, we demonstrate that topological interface modes and trivial edge modes of a specially designed graphene metasurface can be coupled in a tunable and optically controllable manner, thus providing an efficient approach to transfer optical power to top…
We report on a metasurface laser emitting at the valley extremum of a multivalley energy-momentum dispersion. Such peculiar dispersion shape is obtained by hybridizing high quality factor photonic modes of different symmetry and opposite effective mass. The lasing effect takes place at high oblique angle ($\sim$20 degrees), in the telecom wavelength range ($\sim$1580 nm), on silicon substrate and operating at room temperature. Our results show the potential of multivalley dispersion for micro-laser in integrated photonic and beam-steering applications. It also opens the way to study various fe…
