Conventional photonic lattices, such as metamaterials and photonic crystals, exhibit various interesting physical properties that are attributed to periodic modulations in lattice parameters. In this study, we introduce novel types of photonic lattices, namely Fourier-component-engineered metasurfaces, that do not possess the first Fourier harmonic component in the lattice parameters. We demonstrate that these metasurfaces support the continuous high-$Q$ bound states near second stop bands. The concept of engineering Fourier harmonic components in periodic modulations provides a new method to manipulate electromagnetic waves in artificial periodic structures.
We study the negative couplings amid local resonances of photonic metasurfaces. In our analysis, we discover pseudo-spin-orbit coupled bulk modes leading to lines of circularly polarized radiation eigenstates in two-dimensional momentum space which were considered to exist only in three-dimensions. Our theoretical model is exemplified via a guided resonance dielectric metasurface that possesses Type-II Non-Hermitian diabolical points, from where the circular polarization lines emanate. The designed metasurface carries circular polarized radiation eigenstates in both the 0th and the 1st diffrac…
We present nonlinear optical four-wave mixing in a silicon nanodisk dimer metasurface. Under the oblique incident plane waves, the designed metasurface exhibits a multi-resonant feature with simultaneous excitations of three quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC). Through employing these quasi-BICs with maximizing electric field energy at the input bump wavelengths, significant enhancement of third-order nonlinear processes including third-harmonic generation, degenerate and non-degenerate four-wave mixing are demonstrated, giving rise to ten new frequencies in the visible wavelengths. This…
Resonant metasurfaces are an attractive platform for enhancing the non-linear optical processes, such as second harmonic generation (SHG), since they can generate very large local electromagnetic fields while relaxing the phase-matching requirements. Here, we take this platform a step closer to the practical applications by demonstrating visible range, continuous wave (CW) SHG. We do so by combining the attractive material properties of gallium phosphide with engineered, high quality-factor photonic modes enabled by bound states in the continuum. For the optimum case, we obtain efficiencies ar…
For passive, lossless impenetrable metasurfaces, a design technique for arbitrary beam control of receiving, guiding, and launching is presented. Arbitrary control is enabled by a custom surface wave in an orthogonal polarization such that its addition to the incident (input) and the desired scattered (output) fields is supported by a reactive surface impedance everywhere on the reflecting surface. Such a custom surface wave (SW) takes the form of an evanescent wave propagating along the surface with a spatially varying envelope. A growing SW appears when an illuminating beam is received. The …
Halide perovskites belong to an important family of semiconducting materials with unique electronic properties that enable a myriad of applications, especially in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Their optical properties, including photoluminescence quantum yield, are affected and notably enhanced at crystal imperfections where the symmetry is broken and the density of states increases. These lattice distortions can be introduced through structural phase transitions, allowing charge gradients to appear near the interfaces between phase structures. In this work, we demonstrate controlled mult…
The emerging all-dielectric platform exhibits high-quality ($Q$) resonances governed by the physics of bound states in the continuum (BIC) that drives highly efficient nonlinear optical processes. Here we demonstrate the robust enhancement of third-(THG) and fifth-harmonic generation (FHG) from all-dielectric metasurfaces composed of four silicon nanodisks. Through the symmetry breaking, the genuine BIC transforms into the high-$Q$ quasi-BIC resonance with tight field confinement for record high THG efficiency of $3.9\times10^{-4}$ W$^{-2}$ and FHG efficiency of $4.8\times10^{-10}$ W$^{-4}$ us…
We propose the concept of one-sided quantum interference based on non-Hermitian metasurfaces.By designing bianisotropic metasurfaces with a non-Hermitian exceptional point, we show that quantum interference can exist only on only one side but not another. This is the quantum inheritance of unidirectional zero reflection in classical optics. The one-side interference can be further manipulated with tailor-made metasurface. With two photons simultaneously entering the metasurface from different sides, the probability for only outputting one photon on the side with reflection can be modified to ze…
All-dielectric optical metasurfaces with high quality (Q) factors have so far been hampered by the lack of simultaneously lossless and high refractive index (RI) materials over the full visible spectrum. To achieve broad spectral coverage, the use of low-index materials is, in fact, unavoidable due to the inverse correlation between the band-gap energy (and therefore the optical losses) and the RI. However, for Mie resonant photonics, smaller RIs are associated with reduced Q factors and mode volume confinement. In this work, we leverage symmetry-broken bound states in the continuum (BICs) to …

Light can be used for wireless information transmission apart from illumination; that is the key idea behind visible-light communication (VLC), one of the disruptive technologies of our days. It combines remarkably high data rates due to ultrashort wavelengths with huge reliability and security due to small distances; nevertheless, it substantially suffers from interference of neighboring light sources in multiple-link configurations. In this manuscript, we investigate a pair of light emitting diodes (LEDs) interfering each other and propose a simple nanoslit metasurface that radically increas…
Replacing electrons with photons is a compelling route towards light-speed, highly parallel, and low-power artificial intelligence computing. Recently, all-optical diffractive neural deep neural networks have been demonstrated. However, the existing architectures often comprise bulky components and, most critically, they cannot mimic the human brain for multitasking. Here, we demonstrate a multi-skilled diffractive neural network based on a metasurface device, which can perform on-chip multi-channel sensing and multitasking at the speed of light in the visible. The metasurface is integrated wi…
Metasurfaces is an emerging field that enables the manipulation of light by an ultra-thin structure composed of sub-wavelength antennae and fulfills an important requirement for miniaturized optical elements. Finding a new design for a metasurface or optimizing an existing design for a desired functionality is a computationally expensive and time consuming process as it is based on an iterative process of trial and error. We propose a deep learning (DL) architecture dubbed bidirectional autoencoder for nanophotonic metasurface design via a template search methodology. In contrast with the earl…
Metasurfaces control optical wavefronts via arrays of nanoscale resonators laid out across a surface. When combined with III-V semiconductors with strong optical nonlinearities, a variety of nonlinear effects such as harmonic generation and all optical modulation can be enabled and enhanced at the nanoscale. This review presents our research on engineering and boosting nonlinear effects in ultrafast and nonlinear semiconductor metasurfaces fabricated at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). We cover our recent works on parametric generation of harmonic light via direct and cascade…
Subwavelength dielectric resonators assembled into metasurfaces have become a versatile tool for miniaturising optical components approaching the nanoscale. An important class of metasurface functionalities is associated with asymmetry in both generation and transmission of light with respect to reversals of the positions of emitters and receivers. Nonlinear light-matter interaction in metasurfaces offers a promising pathway towards miniaturisation of the asymmetric control of light. Here we demonstrate asymmetric parametric generation of light in nonlinear metasurfaces. We assemble dissimilar…
Optical interactions have an important impact on the optical response of nanostructures in complex environments. Accounting for interactions in large ensembles of structures requires computationally demanding numerical calculations. In particular if no periodicity can be exploited, full field simulations can become prohibitively expensive. Here we propose a method for the numerical description of aperiodic assemblies of plasmonic nanostructures. Our approach is based on dressed polarizabilities, which are conventionally very expensive to calculate, a problem which we alleviate using a deep con…

Rapid progress in nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces enabled many novel optical characteristics for metasurfaces, with potential applications in frequency metrology, timing characterization and quantum information. However, the spectrum of nonlinear optical response was typically based upon the linear optical resonance. In this work, a wavelength-multiplexed nonlinear plasmon-MoS2 hybrid metasurface with suppression phenomenon was proposed, where multiple nonlinear signals could to be simultaneously processed and optionally tuned. A clear physical picture to depict the nonlinear plasmonic bound …
Recent emergence of metasurfaces has enabled the development of ultra-thin flat optical components through different wavefront shaping techniques at various wavelengths. However, due to the non-adaptive nature of conventional metasurfaces, the focal point of the resulting optics needs to be fixed at the design stage, thus severely limiting its reconfigurability and applicability. In this paper, we aim to overcome such constraint by presenting a flat reflective component that can be reprogrammed to focus terahertz waves at a desired point in the near-field region. To this end, we first propose …
Frequency conversion processes, such as second- and third-harmonic generation, are one of the most common effects in nonlinear optics which offer many opportunities for photonics, chemistry, material science, characterization, and biosensing. Given the inherently weak nonlinear response of natural materials, one typically relies on optically large samples and complex phase-matching techniques to achieve nonlinear effects. A direct translation of these approaches to small dimensions, however, is extremely challenging, because nonlinear effects locally comparable to the linear response cannot be…
