This paper focuses on second-order necessary optimality conditions for constrained optimization problems on Banach spaces. For problems in the classical setting, where the objective function is $C^2$-smooth, we show that strengthened second-order necessary optimality conditions are valid if the constraint set is generalized polyhedral convex. For problems in a new setting, where the objective function is just assumed to be $C^1$-smooth and the constraint set is generalized polyhedral convex, we establish sharp second-order necessary optimality conditions based on the Fréchet second-order subdifferential of the objective function and the second-order tangent set to the constraint set. Three examples are given to show that the used hypotheses are essential for the new theorems. Our second-order necessary optimality conditions refine and extend several existing results.
In this paper, in the absence of any constraint qualifications, we develop sequential necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for a constrained multiobjective fractional programming problem characterizing a Henig proper efficient solution in terms of the $ε$-subdifferentials and the subdifferentials of the functions. This is achieved by employing a sequential Henig subdifferential calculus rule of the sums of $m \ (m\geq 2)$ proper convex vector valued mappings with a composition of two convex vector valued mappings. In order to present an example illustrating the main results of this p…
In this article, we introduce the idea of $gH$-weak subdifferential for interval-valued functions (IVFs) and show how to calculate $gH$-weak subgradients. It is observed that a nonempty $gH$-weak subdifferential set is closed and convex. In characterizing the class of functions for which the $gH$-weak subdifferential set is nonempty, it is identified that this class is the collection of $gH$-lower Lipschitz IVFs. In checking the validity of sum rule of $gH$-weak subdifferential for a pair of IVFs, a counterexample is obtained, which reflects that the sum rule does not hold. However, under a mi…
We provide a first-order necessary and sufficient condition for optimality of lower semicontinuous functions on Banach spaces using the concept of subdifferential. From the sufficient condition we derive that any subdifferential operator is monotone absorbing, hence maximal monotone when the function is convex.
In the work, the property of the second-order subdifferential is studied and second-order optimality conditions are obtained for the minimization problem. We also obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for an extremum for the extremal problem of operator inclusions.
We employ a fuzzy optimality condition for the Frechet subdifferential and some advanced techniques of variational analysis such as formulae for the subdifferentials of an infinite family of nonsmooth functions and the coderivative scalarization to investigate robust optimality condition and robust duality for a nonsmooth/nonconvex multiobjective optimization problem dealing with uncertain constraints in arbitrary Asplund spaces. We establish necessary optimality conditions for weakly and properly robust efficient solutions of the problem in terms of the Mordukhovich subdifferentials of the re…
In this paper, we introduce the second-order subdifferentials for functions which are Gâteaux differentiable on an open set and whose Gâteaux derivative mapping is locally Lipschitz. Based on properties of this kind of second-order subdifferentials and techniques of variational analysis, we derive second-order necessary conditions for weak Pareto efficient solutions of multiobjective programming problems with constraints.
The framework of differential inclusions encompasses modern optimal control and the calculus of variations. Necessary optimality conditions in the literature identify potentially optimal paths, but do not show how to perturb paths to optimality. We first look at the corresponding discretized inclusions, estimating the subdifferential dependence of the optimal value in terms of the endpoints of the feasible paths. Our approach is to first estimate the coderivative of the reachable map. The discretized (nonsmooth) Euler-Lagrange and transversality conditions follow as a corollary. We obtain corr…
This expository paper contains a concise introduction to some significant works concerning the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition, a necessary condition for a solution in local optimality in problems with equality and inequality constraints. The study of this optimality condition has a long history and culminated in the appearance of subdifferentials. The 1970s and early 1980s were important periods for new developments and various generalizations of subdifferentials were introduced, including the Clarke subdifferential and Demyanov-Rubinov quasidifferential. In this paper, we mainly present four ge…
The paper is devoted to an analysis of a new constraint qualification and a derivation of the strongest existing optimality conditions for nonsmooth mathematical programming problems with equality and inequality constraints in terms of Demyanov-Rubinov-Polyakova quasidifferentials under the minimal possible assumptions. To this end, we obtain a novel description of convex subcones of the contingent cone to a set defined by quasidifferentiable equality and inequality constraints with the use of a new constraint qualification. We utilize these description and constraint qualification to derive t…
This paper considers a class of nonsmooth nonconvex-nonconcave min-max problems in machine learning and games. We first provide sufficient conditions for the existence of global minimax points and local minimax points. Next, we establish the first-order and second-order optimality conditions for local minimax points by using directional derivatives. These conditions reduce to smooth min-max problems with Fr{é}chet derivatives. We apply our theoretical results to generative adversarial networks (GANs) in which two neural networks contest with each other in a game. Examples are used to illustrat…
This paper is devoted to the study of second order optimality conditions for strong local minimizers in the frameworks of unconstrained and constrained optimization problems in finite dimensions via subgradient graphical derivative. We prove that the positive definiteness of the subgradient graphical derivative of an extended-real-valued lower semicontinuous proper function at a proximal stationary point is sufficient for the quadratic growth condition. It is also a necessary condition for the latter property when the function is either subdifferentially continuous, prox-regular, twice epi-dif…
We investigate the value function of an infinite horizon variational problem in the infinite-dimensional setting. Firstly, we provide an upper estimate of its Dini--Hadamard subdifferential in terms of the Clarke subdifferential of the Lipschitz continuous integrand and the Clarke normal cone to the graph of the set-valued mapping describing dynamics. Secondly, we derive a necessary condition for optimality in the form of an adjoint inclusion that grasps a connection between the Euler--Lagrange condition and the maximum principle.
Construction of an united theory of the subdifferentials of the first and second orders is interesting for many specialists in optimization \cite{morduchrockafel}. In the paper the rules for construction of the subdifferentials of the first and second orders are introduced. The constructions are done with the help of the Steklov integral of a Lipschitz function $f(\cdot)$ over the images of a set-valued mapping $D(\cdot)$. It is proved that the subdifferential of the first order consisting of the average integral limit values of the gradients $\nabla f(r(\cdot))$, calculated along the curves $…
In this paper, we study a nonsmooth/nonconvex multiobjective optimization problem with uncertain constraints in arbitrary Asplund spaces. We first provide necessary optimality condition in a fuzzy form for approximate weakly robust efficient solutions and then establish necessary optimality theorem for approximate weakly robust quasi-efficient solutions of the problem in the sense of the limiting subdifferential by exploiting a fuzzy optimality condition in terms of the Frechet subdifferential. Sufficient conditions for approximate (weakly) robust quasi-efficient solutions to such a problem ar…
We show that quadratic growth of a semi-algebraic function is equivalent to strong metric subregularity of the subdifferential --- a kind of stability of generalized critical points. In contrast, this equivalence can easily fail outside of the semi-algebraic setting. As a consequence, we derive necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for optimality in subdifferential terms.
In this paper, we present some new necessary and sufficient optimality conditions in terms of the Clarke subdifferentials for approximate Pareto solutions of a nonsmooth vector optimization problem which has an infinite number of constraints. As a consequence, we obtain optimality conditions for the particular cases of cone-constrained convex vector optimization problems and semidefinite vector optimization problems. Examples are given to illustrate the obtained results.
This paper provides necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for abstract constrained mathematical programming problems in locally convex spaces under new qualification conditions. Our approach exploits the geometrical properties of certain mappings, in particular their structure as difference of convex functions, and uses techniques of generalized differentiation (subdifferential and coderivative). It turns out that these tools can be used fruitfully out of the scope of Asplund spaces. Applications to infinite, stochastic and semi-definite programming are developed in separate sections.
These lecture notes for a graduate course cover generalized derivative concepts useful in deriving necessary optimality conditions and numerical algorithms for nondifferentiable optimization problems in inverse problems, imaging, and PDE-constrained optimization. Treated are convex functions and subdifferentials, Fenchel duality, monotone operators and resolvents, Moreau--Yosida regularization, proximal point and (some) first-order splitting methods, Clarke subdifferentials, and semismooth Newton methods. The required background from functional analysis and calculus of variations is also brief…
In the present paper, we focus on the vector optimization problems with inequality constraints, where objective functions and constrained functions are Fréchet differentiable, and whose gradient mapping is locally Lipschitz on an open set. By using the second-order symmetric subdifferential and the second-order tangent set, we propose two types of second-order regularity conditions in the sense of Abadie. Then we establish some strong second-order Karush--Kuhn--Tucker necessary optimality conditions for Geoffrion properly efficient solutions of the considered problem. Examples are given to ill…
In this paper, we introduce a new higher-order directional derivative and higher-order subdifferential of Hadamard type of a given proper extended real function. This derivative is harmonized with the classical higher-order Fréchet directional derivative in the sense that both derivatives of the same order coincide if the last one exists. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions of order $n$ ($n$ is a positive integer) for a local minimum and isolated local minimum of order $n$ of the given function in terms of these derivatives and subdifferentials. We do not require any restrictions on …
In this paper we investigate necessary conditions of optimality for infinite-horizon optimal control problems with overtaking optimality as an optimality criterion. For the case of local Lipschitz continuity of the payoff function, we construct a boundary condition on the co-state arc that is necessary for the optimality. We also show that, under additional assumptions on the payoff function's asymptotic behavior, the Pontryagin Maximum Principle with this condition becomes a complete system of relations, and this boundary condition points out the unique co-state arc through a Cauchy-type form…

This paper deals with Pareto solutions of a nonsmooth fractional interval-valued multiobjective optimization. We first introduce four types of Pareto solutions of the considered problem by considering the lower-upper interval order relation and then apply some advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation to establish necessary optimality conditions for these solutions. Sufficient conditions for Pareto solutions of such a problem are also provided by means of introducing the concepts of (strictly) generalized convex functions defined in terms of the limiting/Mordukhovi…
In the recent paper of Giorgi, Jiménez and Novo (J Optim Theory Appl 171:70--89, 2016), the authors introduced the so-called approximate Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (AKKT) condition for smooth multiobjective optimization problems and obtained some AKKT-type necessary optimality conditions and sufficient optimality conditions for weak efficient solutions of such a problem. In this note, we extend these optimality conditions to locally Lipschitz multiobjective optimization problems using Mordukhovich subdifferentials. Furthermore, we prove that, under some suitable additional conditions, an AKKT conditio…
In this paper, we show that higher-order optimality conditions can be obtain for arbitrary nonsmooth function. We introduce a new higher-order directional derivative and higher-order subdifferential of Hadamard type of a given proper extended real function. This derivative is consistent with the classical higher-order Fréchet directional derivative in the sense that both derivatives of the same order coincide if the last one exists. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions of order $n$ ($n$ is a positive integer) for a local minimum and isolated local minimum of order $n$ in terms of thes…
Approximate necessary optimality conditions in terms of Fréchet subgradients and normals for a rather general optimization problem with a potentially non-Lipschitzian objective function are established with the aid of Ekeland's variational principle, the fuzzy Fréchet subdifferential sum rule, and a novel notion of lower semicontinuity relative to a set-valued mapping or set. Feasible points satisfying these optimality conditions are referred to as approximately stationary. As applications, we derive a new general version of the extremal principle. Furthermore, we study approximate stationarit…
In this article, we derive first-order necessary optimality conditions for a constrained optimal control problem formulated in the Wasserstein space of probability measures. To this end, we introduce a new notion of localised metric subdifferential for compactly supported probability measures, and investigate the intrinsic linearised Cauchy problems associated to non-local continuity equations. In particular, we show that when the velocity perturbations belong to the tangent cone to the convexification of the set of admissible velocities, the solutions of these linearised problems are tangent …
In this paper we consider the minimization of a continuous function that is potentially not differentiable or not twice differentiable on the boundary of the feasible region. By exploiting an interior point technique, we present first- and second-order optimality conditions for this problem that reduces to classical ones when the derivative on the boundary is available. For this type of problems, existing necessary conditions often rely on the notion of subdifferential or become non-trivially weaker than the KKT condition in the (twice-)differentiable counterpart problems. In contrast, this pa…
We present a unified study of first and second order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for minimax and Chebyshev optimisation problems with cone constraints. First order optimality conditions for such problems can be formulated in several different forms: in terms of a linearised problem, in terms of Lagrange multipliers (KKT-points), in terms of subdifferentials and normal cones, in terms of a nonsmooth penalty function, in terms of cadres with positive cadre multipliers, and in an alternance form. We describe interconnections between all these forms of necessary and sufficient o…
We address the problem of optimal scale-dependent parameter learning in total variation image denoising. Such problems are formulated as bilevel optimization instances with total variation denoising problems as lower-level constraints. For the bilevel problem, we are able to derive M-stationarity conditions, after characterizing the corresponding Mordukhovich generalized normal cone and verifying suitable constraint qualification conditions. We also derive B-stationarity conditions, after investigating the Lipschitz continuity and directional differentiability of the lower-level solution opera…
The paper is devoted to an analysis of optimality conditions for nonsmooth multidimensional problems of the calculus of variations with various types of constraints, such as additional constraints at the boundary and isoperimetric constraints. To derive optimality conditions, we study generalised concepts of differentiability of nonsmooth functions called codifferentiability and quasidifferentiability. Under some natural and easily verifiable assumptions we prove that a nonsmooth integral functional defined on the Sobolev space is continuously codifferentiable and compute its codifferential an…
This paper deals with the optimization of Bolza problem with a system of convex and nonconvex, discrete and differential state variable inequality constraints of second order by deriving necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality. According to proposed discretization method and equivalence theorems for subdifferential inclusions, the problem with a system of discrete-approximation inequalities are investigated which highly contributes to the derivation of adjoint discrete inclusions generated by given system of nonlinear inequality constraints. Moreover, in the limit case, we obtain su…
In this paper, we introduce a new second-order directional derivative and a second-order subdifferential of Hadamard type for an arbitrary nondifferentiable function. We derive several second-order optimality conditions for a local and a global minimum and an isolated local minimum of second-order in unconstrained optimization. In particular, we obtain two types results with generalized convex functions. We also compare our conditions with the results of the recently published paper [Bednavrik, D., Pastor, K.: On second-order conditions in unconstrained optimization. Math. Program. Ser A, {\bf…
In this paper, we perform sensitivity analysis for the maximal value function which is the optimal value function for a parametric maximization problem. Our aim is to study various subdifferentials for the maximal value function. We obtain upper estimates of Fréchet, limiting, and horizon subdifferentials of the maximal value function by using some sensitivity analysis techniques sophisticatedly. The derived upper estimates depend only on the union of all solutions and not on its convex hull or only one solution from the solution set. Finally, we apply the derived results to develop some new n…
This article is devoted to the analysis of necessary and/or sufficient conditions for metric regularity in terms of Demyanov-Rubinov-Polyakova quasidifferentials. We obtain new necessary and sufficient conditions for the local metric regularity of a multifunction in terms of quasidifferentials of the distance function to this multifunction. We also propose a new MFCQ-type constraint qualification for a parametric system of quasidifferentiable equality and inequality constraints and prove that it ensures the metric regularity of a multifunction associated with this system. As an application, we…
Necessary conditions of optimality in the form of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle are derived for the Bolza-type discounted problem with free right end. The optimality is understood in the sense of the uniformly overtaking optimality. Such process is assumed to exist, and the corresponding payoff of the optimal process (expressed in the form of improper integral) is assumed to converge in the Riemann sense. No other assumptions on the asymptotic behaviour of trajectories or adjoint variables are required. In this paper, we prove that there exists a corresponding limiting solution of the Pontr…
We provide the first positive result on the nonsmooth optimization landscape of robust principal component analysis, to the best of our knowledge. It is the object of several conjectures and remains mostly uncharted territory. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the absence of spurious local minima in the rank-one case. Our proof exploits the subdifferential regularity of the objective function in order to eliminate the existence quantifier from the first-order optimality condition known as Fermat's rule.
We consider the control problem with \textit{exit time}. Unlike the Bolza and Mayer problems, in this problem the terminal time of the trajectories is not fixed, but it is the first time at which they reach a given closed subset - \textit{the target}. The most studied example is the \textit{optimal time problem}, where we want to steer a point to the target in minimal time. In this section, we first introduce the exit time problem, then we recall the existence of optimal controls, and some regularity results for the value function. We then use a suitable form of the \textit{Pontryagin maximum …
