Gaussian cluster states are ideal infinitely squeezed states. In practice it is possible to construct only approximated version of them with finite squeezing. Here we show how to determine the specific multi-mode squeezing transformation, which generates a faithful approximation of any given Gaussian cluster state.
A general analysis of squeezing transformations for two mode systems is given based on the four dimensional real symplectic group $Sp(4,\Re)\/$. Within the framework of the unitary metaplectic representation of this group, a distinction between compact photon number conserving and noncompact photon number nonconserving squeezing transformations is made. We exploit the $Sp(4,\Re)-SO(3,2)\/$ local isomorphism and the $U(2)\/$ invariant squeezing criterion to divide the set of all squeezing transformations into a two parameter family of distinct equivalence classes with representative elements ch…
The multipartite entangled state $|p,ξ_2,ξ_2,...,ξ_n>$ for the total momentum and relative coordinates of n particles is constructed. The corresponding quantum mechanical operator with respect to the classical transformation $p\to e^{λ_1} p$, $ξ_i\to e^{λ_i} ξ_i$, $i=1,...,n$, in the state $|p,ξ_2,ξ_2,...,ξ_n>$ is investigated.
In this Paper we present an approach to Quantum Mechanical Canonical Transformations. Our main result is that Time Dependent Quantum Canonical Transformations can always be cast in the form of Squeezing Operators. We revise the main properties of these operators in regard to its Lie group properties, how two of them can be combined to yield another operator of the same class and how can also be decomposed and fragmented. In the second part of the paper we show how this procedure works extremely well for the Time Dependent Quantum Harmonic Oscillator. The issue of the systematic construction of…
In this paper, we investigate the error correction of universal Gaussian transformations obtained in the process of continuous-variable quantum computations. We have tried to bring our theoretical studies closer to the actual picture in the experiment. When investigating the error correction procedure, we have considered that both the resource GKP state itself and the entanglement transformation are imperfect. In reality, the GKP state has a finite width associated with the finite degree of squeezing, and the entanglement transformation is performed with error. We have considered a hybrid sche…
This article presents a squeezing transformation for quantum systems associated to finite vector spaces. The physical idea of squeezing here is taken from the action of the usual squeezing operator over wave functions defined on a real line, that is, a transformation capable to diminish (or enhance) the mean square deviation of a centered distribution. As it is discussed, the definition of such an operator on finite dimensional vector spaces is not a trivial matter, but, on the other hand, has obvious connections with problems such as spin squeezing and (finite) quantum state reproduction.
By employing at recent proposal (R. Filip, P. Marek and U.L. Andersen, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 71}, 042308 (2005) \cite{Filip05.pra}), we experimentally demonstrate a universal, deterministic and high-fidelity squeezing transformation of an optical field. It relies only on linear optics, homodyne detection, feedforward and an ancillary squeezed vacuum state, thus direct interaction between a strong pump and the quantum state is circumvented. We demonstrate three different squeezing levels for a coherent state input. This scheme is highly suitable for the fault-tolerant squeezing transformation in a …
Generalized squeezing rotating-wave approximation (GSRWA) is proposed by employing both the displacement and the squeezing transformations. A solvable Hamiltonian is reformulated in the same form as the ordinary RWA ones. For a qubit coupled to oscillators experiment, a well-defined Schrödinger-cat-like entangled state is given by the displaced-squeezed oscillator state instead of the original displaced state. For the isotropic Rabi case, the mean photon number and the ground-state energy are expressed analytically with additional squeezing terms, exhibiting a substantial improvement of the GS…
We investigate the possibility to perform a Quantum Non Demolition measurement of the collective alignment of an atomic ensemble in the case of a $F\geq 1$ spin. We compare the case of purely vectorial and purely tensorial Hamiltonians and show how to achieve conditional squeezing or entanglement of atomic alignment components.
We introduce a new class of unitary transformations based on the su(1,1) Lie algebra that generalizes, for certain particular representations of its generators, well-known squeezing transformations in quantum optics. To illustrate our results, we focus on the two-mode bosonic representation and show how the parametric amplifier model can be modified in order to generate such a generalized squeezing operator. Furthermore, we obtain a general expression for the bipartite Wigner function which allows us to identify two distinct sources of entanglement, here labelled by dynamical and kinematical e…
By virtue of the integration method within P-ordered product of operators and the property of entangled state representation, we reveal new physical interpretation of the generalized two-mode squeezing operator (GTSO), and find it be decomposed as the product of free-space propagation operator, single-mode and two-mode squeezing operators, as well as thin lens transformation operator. This docomposition is useful to design of opticl devices for generating various squeezed states of light. Transformation of entangled state representation induced by GTSO is emphasized.
Squeezing transformation as an essential component, gives rise to the possibility to perform various tasks of quantum information processing. However, the reported squeezing gate with best performance so far is a conditional realization at the expense of low success probability, while the performance of the deterministic ones is currently circumscribed by the limited squeezing degree of the non-classical ancilla. To address this issue, we develop and demonstrate a new scheme of deterministic and universal quantum squeezing gate with the property of non-local operation attributed to the telepor…
We find that the exponential operator V=exp[ilamda (Q_1P_2+Q_2P_3+...+Q_{n-1}P_{n}+Q_{n}P_1)], Q_{i}, P_{i} are respectively the coordinate and momentum operators, is an n-mode squeezing operator which engenders standard squeezing. By virtue of the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators we derive V's normally ordered expansion and obtain the n-mode squeezed vacuum states, its Wigner function is calculated by using the Weyl ordering invariance under similar transformations.
We have examined both single and entangled two-mode multiphoton coherent states and shown how the `Janus-faced' properties between two partner states are mirrored in appropriate tomograms. Entropic squeezing, quadrature squeezing and higher-order squeezing properties for a wide range of nonclassical states are estimated directly from tomograms. We have demonstrated how squeezing properties of two-mode entangled states produced at the output port of a quantum beamsplitter are sensitive to the relative phase between the reflected and transmitted fields. This feature allows for the possibility of…
We analyse the possibility to create two-mode spin squeezed states of two separate spin ensembles by inverting the spins in one ensemble and allowing spin exchange between the ensembles via a near resonant cavity field. We investigate the dynamics of the system using a combination of numerical and analytic calculations, and we obtain squeezing for a wide range of parameters. We also investigate the transfer of the squeezing properties to the cavity field and to an output mode from the cavity. Finally, we investigate how the squeezing is affected by effects of inhomogeneities which would be pre…
We present the optimal estimation of an unknown squeezing transformation of the radiation field. The optimal estimation is unbiased and is obtained by properly considering the degeneracy of the squeezing operator. For coherent input states, the r.m.s. of the estimation scales as $(2\sqrt {\bar n})^{-1}$ versus the average photon number $\bar n$, while it can be enhanced to $(2\bar n)^{-1}$ by using displaced squeezed states.
We present a scheme for generating and manipulating three-mode squeezed states with genuine tripartite entanglement by injecting single-mode squeezed light into an array of coupled optical waveguides. We explore the possibility to selectively generate single-mode squeezing or multimode squeezing at the output of an elliptical waveguides array, determined solely by the input light polarization. We study the effect of losses in the waveguides array and show that quantum correlations and squeezing are preserved for realistic parameters. Our results show that arrays of optical waveguides are suita…
We discuss the possibility of generating noncritical quadrature squeezing by spontaneous polarization symmetry breaking. We consider first type-II frequency-degenerate optical parametric oscillators, but discard them for a number of reasons. Then we propose a four-wave mixing cavity in which the polarization of the output mode is always linear but has an arbitrary orientation. We show that in such a cavity complete noise suppression in a quadrature of the output field occurs, irrespective of the parameter values.
In the preceding paper arXiv:0802.3252 [quant-ph] we treated a model given by a master equation with generalized Lindblad form, and examined the algebraic structure related to some Lie algebras and constructed an approximate solution. In this paper we apply a unitary transformation by the squeezing operator to the master equation. Then the generalized Lindblad form is tranformed to the usual Lindblad one, while the (original) Hamiltonian is tranformed to somewhat complicated one. As a result we have two different representations based on the Lie algebra su(1,1). We examine new algebraic struct…
Methods to decompose nonlinear optical transformation vary from setting to setting, leading to apparent differences in the treatments used to model photon pair sources, compared to those used to model degenerate down-conversion processes. The Bloch-Messiah reduction of Gaussian processes to single-mode squeezers and passive (linear) unitaries appears juxtaposed against the practicalities of the Schmidt-decomposition for photon pair sources into two-mode squeezers and passive unitaries. Here, we present a general framework which unifies these forms as well as elucidating more general structure …
Canonical transformations are defined and discussed along with the exponential, the coherent and the ultracoherent vectors. It is shown that the single-mode and the $n$-mode squeezing operators are elements of the group of canonical transformations. An application of canonical transformations is made, in the context of open quantum systems, by studying the effect of squeezing of the bath on the decoherence properties of the system. Two cases are analyzed. In the first case the bath consists of a massless bosonic field with the bath reference states being the squeezed vacuum states and squeezed…
The U(2) invariant approach is delineated for the pair coherent states to explore their squeezing properties. This approach is useful for a complete analysis of the squeezing properties of these two-mode states. We use the maximally compact subgroup U(2) of Sp(4,R) to mix the modes, thus allowing us to search over all possible quadratures for squeezing. The variance matrix for the pair coherent states turns out to be analytically diagonalisable, giving us a handle over its least eigenvalue, through which we are able to pin down the squeezing properties of these states. In order to explicitly d…
We consider the thermodynamic properties of the squeezed vacuum state of a frequency--modulated quantum harmonic oscillator. We analytically relate the squeezing parameter to the irreversible work and the degree of nonadiabaticity of the frequency transformation. We furthermore determine the optimal modulation that leads to maximal squeezing, and discuss its implementation as well as the detection of squeezing in single cold ion traps.
Canonical transformations are ubiquitous in Hamiltonian mechanics, since they not only describe the fundamental invariance of the theory under phase-space reparameterisations, but also generate the dynamics of the system. In the first part of this work we study the symplectic structure associated with linear canonical transformations. After reviewing salient mathematical properties of the symplectic group in a pedagogical way, we introduce the squeezing formalism, and show how any linear dynamics can be cast in terms of an invariant representation. In the second part, we apply these results to…
It is known that exp[i\lamda(Q_1P_1-i/2)] is a unitary single-mode squeezing operator, where Q_1,P_1 are the coordinate and momentum operators, respectively. In this paper we employ Dirac's coordinate representation to prove that the exponential operator S_{n}=Exp[i\lamda sum_{i=1}^{n}](Q_{i}P_{i+1}+Q_{i+1}P_{i}))], (Q_{n+1}=Q_1P_{n+1}=P_1), is a n-mode squeezing operator which enhances the standard squeezing. By virtue of the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators we derive S_{n}'s normally ordered expansion and obtain new n-mode squeezed vacuum states, its Wigner fun…
We explore the possibility to overcome the standard quantum limit (SQL) in a free-fall atom interferometer using a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in either of the two relevant cases of Bragg or Raman scattering light pulses. The generation of entanglement in the BEC is dramatically enhanced by amplifying the atom-atom interactions via the rapid action of an external trap focusing the matter-waves to significantly increase the atomic densities during a preparation stage -- a technique we refer to as delta-kick squeezing (DKS). The action of a second DKS operation at the end of the interferometr…
In a 3-wave mixing process occurring in some nonlinear optical medium when }$a_{1}^{\dagger}${\small mode interacts with both }$a_{2}^{\dagger}% ${\small mode and }$a_{3}^{\dagger}${\small mode, we theoretically study the squeezing effect generated by the operator }$S_{3}\equiv \exp[μ(a_{1}% a_{2}-a_{1}^{\dagger}a_{2}^{\dagger})+ν(a_{1}a_{3}-a_{1}^{\dagger}% a_{3}^{\dagger})]${\small . The new 3-mode squeezed vacuum state in Fock space is derived, and the uncertainty relation for it is demonstrated, It turns out that }$S_{3}${\small may exhibit enhanced squeezing. By virtue of the technique of…
A simple, and elegant geometrical representation is developed to describe the concept of coherence and squeezing for angular momentum operators. Angular momentum squeezed states were obtained by applying Bogoliubov transformation on the angular momentum coherent states in Schwinger representation [Phys. Rev. {\bf{A 51}} (1995)]. We present the geometrical phase space description of angular momentum coherent and squeezed states and relate with the harmonic oscillator. The unique feature of our geometric representation is the portraying of the expectation values of the angular momentum component…
The possibility of using squeezed states in the recently suggested unidimensional continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on a single quadrature modulation is addressed. It is shown that squeezing of the signal states expands the physicality bounds of the effective entangled state shared between the trusted parties due to the antisqueezing noise in the unmodulated quadrature. Modulation of the antisqueezed quadrature, on the other hand, effectively shrinks the physicality bounds due to the squeezing in the unmodulated quadrature and also provides noise on the reference side of the p…
Gaussian quantum states of bosonic systems are an important class of states. In particular, they play a key role in quantum optics as all processes generated by Hamiltonians up to second order in the field operators (i.e. linear optics and quadrature squeezing) preserve Gaussianity. A powerful approach to calculations and analysis of Gaussian states is using phase-space variables and symplectic transformations. The purpose of this note is to serve as a concise reference for performing phase-space calculations on Gaussian states. In particular, we list symplectic transformations for commonly us…
We discuss the concept of characteristic squeezing modes applied to a travelling-wave optical parametric amplifier pumped by an ultrashort pulse. The characteristic modes undergo decoupled single-mode squeezing transformations, and therefore they form a useful basis to describe the evolution of the entire multimode system. This provides an elegant and intuitive picture of quantum statistical properties of parametric fluorescence. We analyse the efficiency of detecting quadrature squeezing, and present results of numerical calculations for a realistic nonlinear medium.
The Stokes-parameter operators and the associated Poincare sphere, which describe the quantum-optical polarization properties of light, are defined and their basic properties are reviewed. The general features of the Stokes operators are illustrated by evaluation of their means and variances for a range of simple polarization states. Some of the examples show polarization squeezing, in which the variances of one or more Stokes parameters are smaller than the coherent-state value. The main object of the paper is the application of these concepts to bright squeezed light. It is shown that a ligh…

We investigate the coupling of a nanomechanical oscillator in the quantum regime with molecular (electric) dipoles. We find theoretically that the cantilever can produce single-mode squeezing of the center-of-mass motion of an isolated trapped molecule and two-mode squeezing of the phonons of an array of molecules. This work opens up the possibility of manipulating dipolar crystals, which have been recently proposed as quantum memory, and more generally, is indicative of the promise of nanoscale cantilevers for the quantum detection and control of atomic and molecular systems.
We introduce nonlinear canonical transformations that yield effective Hamiltonians of multiphoton down conversion processes, and we define the associated non-Gaussian multiphoton squeezed states as the coherent states of the multiphoton Hamiltonians. We study in detail the four-photon processes and the associated non-Gaussian four-photon squeezed states. The realization of squeezing, the behavior of the field statistics, and the structure of the phase space distributions show that these states realize a natural four-photon generalization of the two-photon squeezed states.
We introduce the quantum fractional Hadamard transform with continuous variables. It is found that the corresponding quantum fractional Hadamard operator can be decomposed into a single-mode fractional operator and two single-mode squeezing operators. This is extended to the entangled case by using the bipartite entangled state representation. The new transformation presents more flexibility to represent signals in the fractional Hadamard domain with extra freedom provided by an angle and two-squeezing parameters.
Optomechanical couplings involve both beam-splitter and two-mode-squeezing types of interactions. While the former underlies the utility of many applications, the latter creates unwanted excitations and is usually detrimental. In this work, we propose a simple but powerful method based on cavity parametric driving to suppress the unwanted excitation that does not require working with a deeply sideband-resolved cavity. Our approach is based on a simple observation: as both the optomechanical two-mode-squeezing interaction and the cavity parametric drive induce squeezing transformations of the r…
It is shown that the time evolution of the squeezed and displaced state may be obtained by solving the Heisenberg equation of motion of an appropriate operator and finding the eigenstates of the time evolved operator. The connection between symplectic transformations and squeezing is explored.
The squeezing in a nonlinear system with chaotic dynamics is considered. The model describing interaction of collection of two-level atoms with a single-mode of self-consistent field and an external field is analyzed. It is shown that in the semiclassical limit, in contrast to the regular behaviour, the chaotic dynamics result in: (i) an increase in squeezing, (ii) unstable squeezing and contraction of time intervals of squeezing on large enough times. The possibility of the experimental observation of the described effects is discussed.
Gaussian unitaries are specified by a second order polynomial in the bosonic operators, that is, by a quadratic polynomial and a linear term. From the Hamiltonian other equivalent representations of the Gaussian unitaries are obtained, such as Bogoliubov and real symplectic transformations. The paper develops an alternative representation, called complex symplectic transformation, which is more compact and is comprehensive of both Bogoliubov and real symplectic transformations. Moreover, it has other advantages. One of the main results of the theory, not available in the literature, is that th…
We investigate the entangling capability of passive optical elements, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We present a general necessary and sufficient condition for the possibility of creating distillable entanglement in an arbitrary multi-mode Gaussian state with the help of passive optical elements, thereby establishing a general connection between squeezing and the entanglement that is attainable by non-squeezing operations. Special attention is devoted to general two-mode Gaussian states, for which we provide the optimal entangling procedure, present an explicit formula for the attaina…
We study different representations of a many-particle system. We reveal the stunning beauty of the connections among the nonclassicalities of a many-particle, a single-mode and a two-mode systems. First, we demonstrate that (separable) atomic coherent states~(ACSs), of a many-particle system, mimic the coherent states of single-mode light. This enables the utilization of a many-particle entanglement~(MPE) criterion as a single-mode nonclassicality~(SMNc) condition via Holstein-Primakoff transformation. As an example, we show that spin-squeezing criterion, for MPE, can be transformed into the q…
Compatibility conditions between the (global) spectrum of an $n$-mode Gaussian state and the spectra of the individual modes are presented, making optimal use of beam splitter and (two-mode) squeezing transformations. An unexpected bye-product of our elementary approach is the result that every two-mode Gaussian state is uniquely determined, modulo local transformations, by its global spectrum and local spectra -- a property shared not even by a pair of qubits.
Single-mode squeezing and Fourier transformation operations are two essential logical gates in continuous-variable quantum computation, which have been experimentally implemented by means of an optical four-mode cluster state. In this paper, we present a simpler and more efficient protocol based on the use of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen two-mode entangled states to realize the same operations. The theoretical calculations and the experimental results demonstrate that the presented scheme not only decreases the requirement to the resource quantum states at the largest extent but also enhances signi…
We show that a class of multimode optical transformations that employ linear optics plus two-mode squeezing can be expressed as SU(1,1) operators. These operations are relevant to state-of-the-art continuous variable quantum information experiments including quantum state sharing, quantum teleportation, and multipartite entangled states. Using this SU(1,1) description of these transformations, we obtain a new basis for such transformations that lies in a useful representation of this group and lies outside the often-used restriction to Gaussian states. We analyze this basis, show its applicati…
Quantum noise in a model of singly resonant frequency doubling including phase mismatch and driving in the harmonic mode is analyzed. The general formulae about the fixed points and their stability as well as the squeezing spectra calculated linearizing around such points are given. The use of a nonlinear normalization allows to disentangle in the spectra the dynamic response of the system from the contributions of the various noisy inputs. A general ``reference'' model for one-mode systems is developed in which the dynamic aspects of the problem are not contaminated by static contributions fr…

In a recent work we presented a recursive algorithm to compute the matrix elements of a generic Gaussian transformation in the photon-number basis. Its purpose was to evolve a quantum state by building the transformation matrix and subsequently computing the matrix-vector product. Here we present a faster algorithm that computes the final state without having to generate the full transformation matrix first. With this algorithm we bring the time complexity of computing the Gaussian evolution of an $N$-dimensional $M$-mode state from $O(MN^{2M})$ to $O(M(N^2/2)^M)$, which is an exponential impr…
We introduce a new quantity for describing nonclassicality of an arbitrary optical two-mode Gaussian state which remains invariant under any global photon-number preserving unitary transformation of the covariance matrix of the state. The invariant naturally splits into an entanglement monotone and local nonclassicality quantifiers applied to the reduced states. This shows how entanglement can be converted into local squeezing and vice versa. Twin beams and their transformations at a beam splitter are analyzed as an example providing squeezed light. An extension of this approach to pure three-…
A promising venue for hybrid quantum computation involves the strong coupling between impurity spins and superconducting resonators. One strategy to control and enhance this coupling is to prepare the resonator in a non-classical state, such as a squeezed state. In this work, we theoretically study the effects of these states on the coherence properties of the spin. We develop an analytic approach based on the Schrieffer-Wolf transformation that allows us to quantitatively predict the coupling and the dephasing rate of the spin, and we numerically confirm its validity. We find that squeezing c…
We investigate the statistical properties of the photon-subtractions from the two-mode squeezed vacuum state and its decoherence in a thermal environment. It is found that the state can be considered as a squeezed two-variable Hermite polynomial excitation vacuum and the normalization of this state is the Jacobi polynomial of the squeezing parameter. The compact expression for Wigner function (WF) is also derived analytically by using the Weyl ordered operators' invariance under similar transformations. Especially, the nonclassicality is discussed in terms of the negativity of WF. The effect o…
It is shown how a C*-algebra representation of the transformations of a physical system can be derived from two operational postulates: 1) the existence of dynamically independent systems}; 2) the existence of symmetric faithful states. Both notions are crucial for the possibility of performing experiments on the system, in preventing remote instantaneous influences and in allowing calibration of apparatuses. The case of Quantum Mechanics is thoroughly analyzed. The possibility that other no-signaling theories admit a C*-algebra formulation is discussed.
