We introduce nonlinear canonical transformations that yield effective Hamiltonians of multiphoton down conversion processes, and we define the associated non-Gaussian multiphoton squeezed states as the coherent states of the multiphoton Hamiltonians. We study in detail the four-photon processes and the associated non-Gaussian four-photon squeezed states. The realization of squeezing, the behavior of the field statistics, and the structure of the phase space distributions show that these states realize a natural four-photon generalization of the two-photon squeezed states.
We propose a displacement-operator approach to some aspects of squeezed states for general multiphoton systems. The explicit displacement-operators of the squeezed vacuum and the coherent states are achieved and expresses as the ordinary exponential form. As a byproduct the coherent states of the $q$-oscillator are obtained by the {\it usual exponential} displacement-operator.
Multiphoton heralding generates large-amplitude squeezed Schrödinger cat states and parity-selective Fock superpositions from squeezed vacuum via an OPA
In terms of the characteristic functions of the quantum states, we present a complete operator description of a lossy photon-subtraction scheme. Feeding a single-mode squeezed vacuum into a variable beam splitter and counting the photons in one of the output channels, a broad class of multiphoton-subtracted squeezed vacuum states (MSSVSs) can be generated in other channel. Here the losses are considered in the beginning and the end channels in the circuit. Indeed, this scheme has been discussed in Ref. [Phys. Rev. A 100, 022341 (2019)]. However, different from the above work, we give all the d…
In this paper we discuss the quantum properties for superposition of squeezed displaced number states against multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM). In particular, we investigate atomic inversion, photon-number distribution, purity, quadrature squeezing, Mandel $Q$ parameter and Wigner function. We show that the quadrature squeezing for three-photon absorption case can exhibit revivals and collapses typical to those occurring in the atomic inversion for one-photon absorption case. Also we prove that for odd number absorption parameter there is a connection between the evolution of the atomic…
We introduce a linear, canonical transformation of the fundamental single--mode field operators $a$ and $a^{\dagger}$ that generalizes the linear Bogoliubov transformation familiar in the construction of the harmonic oscillator squeezed states. This generalization is obtained by adding to the linear transformation a nonlinear function of any of the fundamental quadrature operators $X_{1}$ and $X_{2}$, making the original Bogoliubov transformation quadrature--dependent. Remarkably, the conditions of canonicity do not impose any constraint on the form of the nonlinear function, and lead to a set…
Extending the scheme developed for a single mode of the electromagnetic field in the preceding paper ``Structure of multiphoton quantum optics. I. Canonical formalism and homodyne squeezed states'', we introduce two-mode nonlinear canonical transformations depending on two heterodyne mixing angles. They are defined in terms of hermitian nonlinear functions that realize heterodyne superpositions of conjugate quadratures of bipartite systems. The canonical transformations diagonalize a class of Hamiltonians describing non degenerate and degenerate multiphoton processes. We determine the coherent…
We introduce a formalism of nonlinear canonical transformations for general systems of multiphoton quantum optics. For single-mode systems the transformations depend on a tunable free parameter, the homodyne local oscillator angle; for n-mode systems they depend on n heterodyne mixing angles. The canonical formalism realizes nontrivial mixings of pairs of conjugate quadratures of the electromagnetic field in terms of homodyne variables for single-mode systems; and in terms of heterodyne variables for multimode systems. In the first instance the transformations yield nonquadratic model Hamilton…
We investigate a single atom cavity-QED system directly driven by a broadband squeezed light. We demonstrate how the squeezed radiation can be used to sense the presence of a single atom in a cavity. This happens by transferring one of the photons from the field in a state with even number of photons to the atom and thereby populating odd number Fock states. Specifically, the presence of the atom is sensed by remarkable changing in the presence of one photon and the loss of squeezing of the cavity field. A complete study of quantum fluctuations and the excitation of multiphoton transitions is …
In this work, we introduce a non-Gaussian quantum state named excited squeezed vacuum state (ESVS), which can be ustilized to describe quantum light field emitted from the multiphoton quantum process occurred in some restricted quantum systems. We investigate its nonclassical properties such as Wigner distribution in phase space, photon number distribution, the second-order autocorrelation and the quadrature fluctuations. By virtue of the Hilbert-Schmidt distance method, we quantify the non-Gaussianity of the ESVS. Due to the similar photon statistics, we examine the fidelity between the ESVS …
We present a review of theoretical and experimental aspects of multiphoton quantum optics. Multiphoton processes occur and are important for many aspects of matter-radiation interactions that include the efficient ionization of atoms and molecules, and, more generally, atomic transition mechanisms; system-environment couplings and dissipative quantum dynamics; laser physics, optical parametric processes, and interferometry. A single review cannot account for all aspects of such an enormously vast subject. Here we choose to concentrate our attention on parametric processes in nonlinear media, w…
In this paper, we extend the results of an earlier paper in which we had demonstrated the limitations of the notion of non-resonant multiphoton ionization, in the exploration of photon statistics effects in non-linear processes. Through the quantitative analysis of specific realistic processes, we provide the connection to conditions of intensity and pulse duration necessary in relevant experiments, including a recent seminal experiment demonstrating the effect of superbunching found in squeezed radiation.
It is shown that any two Hamiltonians H(t) and H'(t) of N dimensional quantum systems can be related by means of time-dependent canonical transformations (CT). The dynamical symmetry group of system with Hamiltonian H(t) coincides with the invariance group of H(t). Quadratic Hamiltonians can be diagonalized by means of linear time-dependent CT. The diagonalization can be explicitly carried out in the case of stationary and some nonstationary quadratic H. Linear CT can diagonalize the uncertainty matrix σ(ρ) for canonical variables p_k, q_j in any state ρ, i.e., σ(ρ) is symplectically congruent…
We investigate the cavity excitation spectrum and the photon number distribution in a cavity QED system driven by a broadband squeezed vacuum. In an empty cavity, we show that only states with even number of photons can be measured under resonant condition since the squeezed vacuum consists of states with even number of photons only. When a single atom is trapped in the cavity, the strong coupling between the atom and cavity results in energy splittings of the system, and there exist two peaks in the cavity excitation spectrum at two-photon transition frequencies. At the central frequency, how…
The quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation predicts characteristic statistical fluctuations for light sources as diverse as sunlight, laser radiation and molecule fluorescence. Indeed, these underlying statistical fluctuations of light are associated with the fundamental physical processes behind their generation. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the manipulation of the quantum electromagnetic fluctuations of a pair of vacuum states leads to a novel family of quantum-correlated multiphoton states with tunable mean photon numbers and degree of correlation. Our technique relies on …
Multi-photon processes are the essence of nonlinear optics. Optical harmonics generation and multi-photon absorption, ionization, polymerization or spectroscopy are widely used in practical applications. Generally, the rate of an n-photon effect scales as the n-th order autocorrelation function of the incident light, which is high for light with strong photon-number fluctuations. Therefore `noisy' light sources are much more efficient for multi-photon effects than coherent sources with the same mean power, pulse duration and repetition rate. Here we generate optical harmonics of order 2-4 from…
We consider a multiphoton Bell-type inequality to study nonlocality in four-mode continuous variable systems, which goes beyond two-photon states and can be applied to mixed as well as states with fluctuating photon number. We apply the inequality to a wide variety of states such as pure and mixed Gaussian states (including squeezed thermal states) and non-Gaussian states. We consider beam splitters as a model for leakage and show that the inequality is able to detect nonclassicality of noisy Gaussian states as well. Finally, we investigate nonlocality in pair-coherent states and entangled coh…
Canonical transformations are defined and discussed along with the exponential, the coherent and the ultracoherent vectors. It is shown that the single-mode and the $n$-mode squeezing operators are elements of the group of canonical transformations. An application of canonical transformations is made, in the context of open quantum systems, by studying the effect of squeezing of the bath on the decoherence properties of the system. Two cases are analyzed. In the first case the bath consists of a massless bosonic field with the bath reference states being the squeezed vacuum states and squeezed…
The quantum statistical fluctuations of the electromagnetic field establish a limit, known as the shot-noise limit, on the sensitivity of optical measurements performed with classical technologies. However, quantum technologies are not constrained by this shot-noise limit. In this regard, the possibility of using every photon produced by quantum sources of light to estimate small physical parameters, beyond the shot-noise limit, constitutes one of the main goals of quantum optics. Here we experimentally demonstrate a scalable protocol for quantum-enhanced optical phase estimation across a broa…
The problem of diagonalization of Hamiltonians of N-dimensional boson systems by means of time-dependent canonical transformations (CT) is considered, the case of quadratic Hamiltonians being treated in greater detail. The unitary generator of time-dependent CT which can transform any Hamiltonian to that of a system of uncoupled stationary oscillators is constructed. The close relationship between methods of canonical transformations, time-dependent integrals of motion and dynamical symmetry is noted. The diagonalization and symplectic properties of the uncertainty matrix for 2N canonical obse…
It is shown that the maximal phase sensitivity of a two-path interferometer with high-intensity coherent light and squeezed vacuum in the input ports can be achieved by photon-number-resolving detection of only a small number of photons in a dark output port. It is then possible to achieve the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the two-path interferometer using only the field displacement dependence of the photon number statistics in the single mode output of the dark port represented by a field-displaced squeezed vacuum state. We find that, at small field displacements, it is not sufficient to use t…
Planar squeezed states, i.e. quantum states which are squeezed in two orthogonal spin components, have recently attracted attention due to their applications in atomic interferometry and quantum information [Q. Y. He et al, New J. Phys. 14, 093012 (2012)]. While canonical variables such as quadratures of the radiation field can be squeezed in at most one component, simultaneous squeezing in two orthogonal spin components can be achieved due to the angular momentum commutation relations. We present a novel scheme for planar squeezing via quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements in spin-1 syste…
Resonance fluorescence arises from the interaction of an optical field with a two-level system and has played a fundamental role in the development of quantum optics and its applications. Despite its conceptual simplicity it entails a wide range of intriguing phenomena, such as the Mollow-triplet emission spectrum and coherent photon emission. One fundamental aspect of resonance fluorescence, reduced quantum fluctuations in the single photon stream from an atom in free space, was predicted more than 30 years ago. However, the requirement to operate in the weak excitation regime, together with …
We derive an efficiency bound for continuous quantum heat engines absorbing heat from squeezed thermal reservoirs. Our approach relies on a full-counting statistics description of nonequilibrium transport and it is not limited to the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. Our result, a generalized Carnot efficiency bound, is valid beyond the small squeezing and high temperature limit. Our findings are embodied in a prototype three-terminal quantum photoelectric engine where a qubit converts heat absorbed from a squeezed thermal reservoir into electrical power. We demonstrate that in the qua…
We show that the eight-port interferometer used by Noh, Fougères, and Mandel [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 71}, 2579 (1993)] to measure their operational phase distribution of light can also be used to measure the canonical phase distribution of weak optical fields, where canonical phase is defined as the complement of photon number. A binomial reference state is required for this purpose, which we show can be obtained to an excellent degree of approximation from a suitably squeezed state. The proposed method requires only photodetectors that can distinguish among zero, one and more than one photons …
We present a rigorous and quantum-consistent description of dispersive non-Hermitian optical bilayers in the framework of the canonical quantization scheme. Then we investigate the propagation of a normally incident squeezed coherent state of light through such media, particularly at a frequency for which the bilayers become parity-time (PT) symmetric. Furthermore, to check the realization of PT-symmetry in quantum optics, we reveal how dispersion and loss/gain-induced noises and thermal effects in such bilayers can affect quantum features of the incident light, such as squeezing and sub-Poiss…
Modification of the right-hand-side of canonical commutation relations (CCR) naturally occurs if one considers a harmonic oscillator with indefinite frequency. Quantization of electromagnetic field by means of such a non-CCR algebra naturally removes the infinite energy of vacuum but still results in a theory which is very similar to quantum electrodynamics. An analysis of perturbation theory shows that the non-canonical theory has an automatically built-in cut-off but requires charge/mass renormalization already at the nonrelativistic level. A simple rule allowing to compare perturbative pred…
This work contributes to the study of non-equilibrium aspects of the Casimir forces with the introduction of squeezed states in the calculations. Throughout this article two main results can be found, being both strongly correlated. Primarily, the more formal result involves the development of a first-principles canonical quantization formalism to study the vacuum in presence different dissipative bodies in completely general scenarios. We considered a one-dimensional quantum scalar field interacting with the volume elements' degrees of freedom of the material bodies, which are modeled as comp…
The non-Gaussian operations effected by adding or subtracting a photon on the entangled optical beams emerging from a parametric down-conversion process have been suggested to enhance entanglement. Heralded photon addition or subtraction is, as a matter of fact, at the heart of continuous-variable entanglement distillation. The use of such processes has recently been experimentally demonstrated in the context of the generation of optical coherent-state superpositions or the verification of the canonical commutation relations. Here, we carry out a systematic study of the effect of local photon …
