The BaAl$_4$ prototype crystal structure is the most populous of all structure types, and is the building block for a diverse set of sub-structures including the famous ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ family that hosts high-temperature superconductivity and numerous magnetic and strongly correlated electron systems. The MA$_4$ family of materials (M=Sr, Ba, Eu; A=Al, Ga, In) themselves present an intriguing set of ground states including charge and spin orders, but have largely been considered as uninteresting metals. Using electronic structure calculations, symmetry analysis and topological quantum chemistry techniques, we predict the exemplary compound BaAl$_4$ to harbor a three-dimensional Dirac spectrum with non-trivial topology and possible nodal lines crossing the Brillouin zone, wherein one pair of semi-Dirac points with linear dispersion along the $k_z$ direction and quadratic dispersion along the $k_x/k_y$ direction resides on the rotational axis with $C_{4v}$ point group symmetry. Electrical transport measurements reveal the presence of an extremely large, unsaturating positive magnetoresistance in BaAl$_4$ despite an uncompensated band structure, and quantum oscillations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements confirm the predicted multiband semimetal structure with pockets of Dirac holes and a Van Hove singularity (VHS) remarkably consistent with the theoretical prediction. We thus present BaAl$_4$ as a new topological semimetal, casting its prototype status into a new role as building block for a vast array of new topological materials.
We introduce a novel class of interaction-enabled topological crystalline insulators in two- and three-dimensional electronic systems, which we call "topological crystalline magnet." It is protected by the product of the time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and a mirror symmetry or a rotation symmetry $\mathcal{R}$. A topological crystalline magnet exhibits two intriguing features: (i) it cannot be adiabatically connected to any Slater insulator and (ii) the edge state is robust against coupling electrons to the edge. These features are protected by the anomalous symmetry transformation proper…
There have been increasing efforts in realizing topological metallic phases with nontrivial surface states. It was suggested that orthorhombic perovskite iridates are classified as a topological crystalline metal (TCM) with flat surface states protected by lattice symmetries. Here we perform first-principles electronic structure calculations for epitaxially stabilized orthorhombic perovskite iridates. Remarkably, two different types of topological surface states are found depending on surface directions. On side surfaces, flat surface states protected by lattice symmetries emerge, manifesting …
We put the theory of interacting topological crystalline phases on a systematic footing. These are topological phases protected by space-group symmetries. Our central tool is an elucidation of what it means to "gauge" such symmetries. We introduce the notion of a "crystalline topological liquid", and argue that most (and perhaps all) phases of interest are likely to satisfy this criterion. We prove a Crystalline Equivalence Principle, which states that in Euclidean space, crystalline topological liquids with symmetry group $G$ are in one-to-one correspondence with topological phases protected …
Recent theoretical advances have proposed a new class of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phases protected by rotational symmetries. Distinct from topological insulators (TIs), rotational symmetry-protected TCIs are expected to show unique topologically protected boundary modes: First, the surface normal to the rotational axis features unpinned Dirac surface states whose Dirac points are located at generic k points. Second, due to the higher-order bulk boundary correspondence, a 3D TCI also supports 1D helical edge states. Despite the unique topological electronic properties, to date, p…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials are unique in the wide variety of structural and electronic phases they exhibit in the two-dimensional (2D) single-layer limit. Here we show how such polymorphic flexibility can be used to achieve topological states at highly ordered phase boundaries in a new quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI), 1T'-WSe2. We observe helical states at the crystallographically-aligned interface between quantum a spin Hall insulating domain of 1T'-WSe2 and a semiconducting domain of 1H-WSe2 in contiguous single layers grown using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The QSH…
Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are insulating electronic states with nontrivial topology protected by crystalline symmetries. Recently, theory has proposed new classes of TCIs protected by rotation symmetries Ĉ$_n$, which have surface rotation anomaly evading the fermion doubling theorem, i.e. n instead of 2n Dirac cones on the surface preserving the rotation symmetry. Here, we report the first realization of the Ĉ$_2$ rotation anomaly in a binary compound SrPb. Our first-principles calculations reveal two massless Dirac fermions protected by the combination of time-reversal symmetr…
Linking structure is a new concept characterizing topological semimetals, which indicates the interweaving of gap-closing nodes at the Fermi energy ($E_F$) with other nodes below $E_F$. As the number of linked nodes can be changed only via pair-creation or pair-annihilation, a linked node is more stable and robust than ordinary nodes without linking. Here we propose a new type of a linked nodal structure between a nodal line (nodal surface) at $E_F$ with another nodal line (nodal surface) below $E_F$ in two-dimensional (three-dimensional) spinless fermion systems with $\mathcal{IT}$ symmetry w…
Topological superconductors possess a nodeless superconducting gap in the bulk and gapless zero energy modes, known as "Majorana zero modes", at the boundary of a finite system. In this work, we introduce a new class of topological superconductors, which are protected by nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry and thus dubbed "topological nonsymmorphic crystalline superconductors". We construct an explicit Bogoliubov-de Gennes type of model for this superconducting phase in the D class and show how Majorana zero modes in this model are protected by glide symmetry. Furthermore, we generalize the cla…
While the topological classification of insulators, semimetals, and superconductors in terms of nonspatial symmetries is well understood, less is known about topological states protected by crystalline symmetries, such as mirror reflections and rotations. In this work, we systematically classify topological semimetals and nodal superconductors that are protected, not only by nonspatial (i.e., global) symmetries, but also by a crystal reflection symmetry. We find that the classification crucially depends on (i) the codimension of the Fermi surface (nodal line or point) of the semimetal (superco…
A lattice symmetry, if being nonsymmorphic, is defined by combining a point group symmetry with a fractional lattice translation that cannot be removed by changing the lattice origin. Nonsymmorphic symmetry has a substantial influence on both the connectivity and topological properties of electronic band structures in solid-state quantum materials. In this article, we review how nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetries can drive and further protect the emergence of exotic fermionic quasiparticles, including Dirac, Möbius and hourglass fermions, that manifest as the defining energy band signatures …
Recent attempts at topological materials have revealed a large class of materials that show gapless surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry and crystal symmetries. Among them, topological insulating states protected by crystal symmetries, rather than time-reversal symmetry are classified as topological crystalline insulators. We computationally predict the signature of new three-dimensional topological crystalline insulating compounds of space group 139(I/4mmm). After conducting a full volume optimization process by allowing to rearrange of atomic positions and lattice parameters, t…
Discovery of topologically protected surface states, believed to be immune to weak disorder and thermal effects, opened up a new avenue to reveal exotic fundamental science and advanced technology. While time-reversal symmetry plays the key role in most such materials, the bulk crystalline symmetries such as mirror symmetry preserve the topological properties of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). It is apparent that any structural change may alter the topological properties of TCIs. To investigate this relatively unexplored landscape, we study the temperature evolution of the Dirac fer…
ThTaN$_3$, a rare cubic perovskite nitride semiconductor, has been studied using {\it ab initio} methods. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) results in band inversion and a band gap of 150 meV at the zone center. In spite of the trivial $Z_2$ indices, two pairs of spin-polarized surface bands cross the gap near the zone center, indicating that this system is a topological crystalline insulator with the mirror Chern number of $|{\cal C}_m|=2$ protected by the mirror and $C_4$ rotational symmetries. Additionally, SOC doubles the Seebeck coefficient, leading to a maximum of $\sim$400 $μ$V/K at 150 K for c…

Since the advent of topological insulators hosting symmetry-protected Dirac surface states, efforts have been made to gap these states in a controllable way. A new route to accomplish this was opened up by the discovery of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) where the topological states are protected by real space crystal symmetries and thus prone to gap formation by structural changes of the lattice. Here, we show for the first time a temperature-driven gap opening in Dirac surface states within the TCI phase in (Pb,Sn)Se. By using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, the gap form…
Unlike time-reversal topological insulators, surface metallic states with Dirac cone dispersion in the recently discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are protected by crystal symmetry. To date, TCI behaviors have been observed in SnTe and the related alloys Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se/Te, which incorporate heavy elements with large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, by combining first-principles and {\it ab initio} tight-binding calculations, we report the formation of a TCI in the relatively lighter rock-salt SnS and SnSe. This TCI is characterized by an even number of Dirac cones at th…
Based on first-principles calculations and symmetry-based indicator analysis, we find a class of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) with $C_2$ rotation anomaly in a family of Zintl compounds, including $\mathrm{Ba}_{3}\mathrm{Cd}_{2}\mathrm{As}_{4}$, $\mathrm{Ba}_{3}\mathrm{Zn}_{2}\mathrm{As}_{4}$ and $\mathrm{Ba}_{3}\mathrm{Cd}_{2}\mathrm{Sb}_{4}$. The nontrivial band topology protected by coexistence of $C_2$ rotation symmetry and time-reversal symmetry $T$ leads to two surface Dirac cones at generic momenta on both top and bottom surfaces perpendicular to the rotation axis. In additi…
Recent development in exact classification of a superconducting gap has elucidated various unconventional gap structures, which have not been predicted by the classification of order parameter based on the point group. One of the important previous results is that all symmetry-protected line nodes are characterized by nontrivial topological numbers. Another intriguing discovery is the gap structures depending on the angular momentum $j_z$ of normal Bloch states on threefold and sixfold rotational-symmetric lines in the Brillouin zone. Stimulated by these findings, we classify irreducible repre…
Three-dimensional topological crystalline insulators were recently predicted and observed in the SnTe class of IV-VI semiconductors, which host metallic surface states protected by crystal symmetries. In this work, we study thin films of these materials and expose their potential for device applications. We demonstrate that thin films of SnTe and Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se(Te) grown along the (001) direction are topologically nontrivial in a wide range of film thickness and carry conducting spin-filtered edge states that are protected by the (001) mirror symmetry via a topological invariant. Application o…
In a joint theoretical and experimental investigation we show that a series of transition metals with strained body-centered cubic lattice ---W, Ta, Nb, and Mo--- host surface states that are topologically protected by mirror symmetry. Our finding extends the class of topologically nontrivial systems by topological crystalline transition metals. The investigation is based on independent calculations of the electronic structures and of topological invariants, the results of which agree with established properties of the Dirac-type surface state in W(110). To further support our prediction, we i…
Integration between magnetism and topology is an exotic phenomenon in condensed-matter physics. Here, we propose an exotic phase named topological crystalline antiferromagnetic state, in which antiferromagnetism intrinsically integrates with nontrivial topology, and we suggest such a state can be realized in tetragonal FeS. A combination of first-principles calculations and symmetry analyses shows that the topological crystalline antiferromagnetic state arises from band reconstruction induced by pair checker-board antiferromagnetic order together with band-gap opening induced by intrinsic spin…
Dirac semimetal is a class of semi-metallic phase protected by certain types of crystalline symmetries, and its low-energy effective Hamiltonian is described by Dirac equations in three dimensions (3D). Despite of various theoretical studies, theories that describe the topological nature of Dirac semimetals have not been well established. In this work, we define a topological invariant for 3D Dirac semimetals by establishing a mapping between a 3D Dirac semimetal and a topological crystalline insulator in four dimension (4D). We demonstrate this scheme by constructing a tight-binding model for…
Using a tight-binding approach we study theoretically the nature of surface states in Pb0.4Sn0.6Te - the newly discovered topological-crystalline-insulator. Apart from the studied before (001) surface states, two other surface families, {011} and {111}, in which the mirror symmetry of the crystal's rock-salt structure plays the same role in topological protection, are considered. Our calculations show that while in (111) surface states of (Pb,Sn)Te four single topologically protected Dirac-cones should appear, for the (110) surface states the protection is lifted for two L points. In this case…
A crystalline topological phase is a topological phase with spatial symmetries. In this work, we give a very general physical picture of such phases: a topological phase with spatial symmetry $G$ (with internal symmetry $G_{\mathrm{int}} \leq G$) is described by a *defect network*: a $G$-symmetric network of defects in a topological phase with internal symmetry $G_{\mathrm{int}}$. The defect network picture works both for symmetry-protected topological (SPT) and symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, in systems of either bosons or fermions. We derive this picture both by physical argument…
SnTe topological crystalline insulator nanowires have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy on graphene/SiC substrates. The nanowires have cubic rock-salt structure, they grow along [001] crystallographic direction and have four sidewalls consisting of {100} crystal planes known to host metallic surface states with Dirac dispersion. Thorough high resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations show that the nanowires grow on graphene in the van der Walls epitaxy mode induced when the catalyzing Au nanoparticle mixes with Sn delivered from SnTe flux, providing liquid Au-Sn alloy. The …
Dirac nodal line semimetals (DNLSs) host relativistic quasiparticles in their one-dimensional (1D) Dirac nodal line (DNL) bands that are protected by certain crystalline symmetries. Their novel low-energy fermion quasiparticle excitations and transport properties invite studies of relativistic physics in the solid state where their linearly dispersing Dirac bands cross at continuous lines with four-fold degeneracy. In materials studied up to now, the four-fold degeneracy, however, has been vulnerable to suppression by the ubiquitous spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Despite the current effort to disc…
Topological crystalline insulators are topological insulators whose surface states are protected by the crystalline symmetry, instead of the time reversal symmetry. Similar to the first generation of three-dimensional topological insulators such as Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, topological crystalline insulators also possess surface states with exotic electronic properties such as spin-momentum locking and Dirac dispersion. Experimentally verified topological crystalline insulators to date are SnTe, Pb1-xSnxSe, and Pb1-xSnxTe. Because topological protection comes from the crystal symmetry, magnetic impur…
In the recently discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), topology and crystal symmetry intertwine to create surface states with a unique set of characteristics. Among the theoretical predictions for TCIs is the possibility of imparting mass to the massless Dirac fermions by breaking crystal symmetry, as well as a Lifshitz transition with a change of Fermi surface topology. Here we report high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy studies of a TCI, Pb1-xSnxSe. We demonstrate the formation of zero mass Dirac fermions protected by crystal symmetry and the mechanism of mass generat…
Topological crystalline insulator (TCI) is one of the symmetry-protected topological states. Any TCI can be deformed into a simple product state of several decoupled two-dimensional (2D) topologically nontrivial layers in its lattice respecting its crystalline symmetries called the layer construction (LC) limit. In this work, based on first-principles calculations we have revealed that both tetragonal LaSbTe (t-LaSbTe) and orthorhombic LaSbTe (o-LaSbTe) can be interpreted as stacking of 2D topological insulators in each lattice space. The structural phase transition from t-LaSbTe to o-LaSbTe d…
Based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we propose that a transition metal rutile oxide, in particular $β'$-PtO$_2$, can host a three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal phase. We find that $β'$-PtO$_2$ possesses a linked nodal rings structure when spin-orbit coupling is neglected. Incorporating spin-orbit coupling gaps the nodal rings, while preserving a single pair of three-dimensional Dirac points protected by a screw rotation symmetry. This Dirac point is created by a band inversion of two $d$ bands, which is a realization of a DSM phase in correlated electron sys…
We discover three-dimensional intertwined Weyl phases, by developing a theory to create topological phases. The theory is based on intertwining existing topological gapped and gapless phases protected by the same crystalline symmetry. The intertwined Weyl phases feature both unconventional Weyl semimetallic (monopole charge>1) and higher-order topological phases, and more importantly, their exotic intertwining. While the two phases are independently stabilized by the same symmetry, their intertwining results in the specific distribution of them in the bulk. The construction mechanism allows us…
Superconducting topological crystalline insulators (TCI) are predicted to host new topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries, but available materials are insufficiently suitable for surface studies. To induce superconductivity at the surface of a prototypical TCI SnTe, we use molecular beam epitaxy to grow a heterostructure of SnTe and a high-Tc superconductor Fe(Te,Se), utilizing a 'buffer' layer to bridge the large lattice mismatch between SnTe and Fe(Te,Se). Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we measure a prominent spectral gap on the surface …
Crystalline topological phases have recently attracted a lot of experimental and theoretical attention. Key advances include the complete elementary band representation analyses of crystalline matter by symmetry indicators and the discovery of higher-order hinge and corner states. However, current classification schemes of such phases are either implicit or limited in scope. We present a new scheme for the explicit classification of crystalline topological insulators and superconductors. These phases are protected by crystallographic point group symmetries and are characterized by bulk topolog…
Narrow gap semiconductor Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se was investigated for topologically protected surface states in its rock-salt structural phase for x=0.45, 0.23, 0.15, and 0. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of intrinsically p-doped samples showed clear indication of two Dirac cones, eccentric about the time-reversal invariant point X of the surface Brillouin zone for all but the x=0 sample. Adsorption of alkalies gradually filled the surface bands with electrons, driving the x>0 topological crystalline insulator systems through Lifshitz transitions, and from a hole- to electron-like Ferm…
Topological materials are derived from the interplay between symmetry and topology. Advances in topological band theories have led to the prediction that the antiperovskite oxide Sr$_3$SnO is a topological crystalline insulator, a new electronic phase of matter where the conductivity in its (001) crystallographic planes is protected by crystallographic point group symmetries. Realization of this material, however, is challenging. Guided by thermodynamic calculations we design and implement a deposition approach to achieve the adsorption-controlled growth of epitaxial Sr$_3$SnO single-crystal f…
Topological insulators are a novel class of quantum materials in which time-reversal symmetry, relativistic (spin-orbit) effects and an inverted band structure result in electronic metallic states on the surfaces of bulk crystals. These helical states exhibit a Dirac-like energy dispersion across the bulk bandgap, and they are topologically protected. Recent theoretical proposals have suggested the existence of topological crystalline insulators, a novel class of topological insulators in which crystalline symmetry replaces the role of time-reversal symmetry in topological protection [1,2]. In…
In higher-order topological insulators, bulk and surface electronic states are gapped, while there appear gapless hinge states protected by spatial symmetry. Here we show by ab initio calculations that the La apatite electride is a higher-order topological crystalline insulator. It is a one-dimensional electride, in which the one-dimensional interstitial hollows along the $c$ axis support anionic electrons, and the electronic states in these one-dimensional channels are well approximated by the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. When the crystal is cleaved into a hexagonal prism, the …
A new class of materials, Topological Crystalline Insulators (TCIs) have been shown to possess exotic surface state properties that are protected by mirror symmetry. These surface features can be enhanced if the surface-area-to-volume ratio of the material increases, or the signal arising from the bulk of the material can be suppressed. We report the experimental procedures to obtain high quality crystal boules of the TCI, SnTe, from which nanowires and microcrystals can be produced by the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) technique. Detailed characterisation measurements of the bulk crystals as well …
Based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we predict atomically thin ($1-N$ layers) 2H group-VIB TMDs $MX_2$ ($M$ = Mo, W; $X$ = S, Se, Te) are large-gap higher-order topological crystalline insulators protected by $C_3$ rotation symmetry. We explicitly demonstrate the nontrivial topological indices and existence of the hallmark corner states with quantized fractional charge for these familiar TMDs with large bulk optical band gaps ($1.64-1.95$ eV for the monolayers), which would facilitate the experimental detection by STM. We find that the well-defined corner states exist…
SnTe is a prototypical topological crystalline insulator, in which the gapless surface state is protected by a crystal symmetry. The hallmark of the topological properties in SnTe is the Dirac cones projected to the surfaces with mirror symmetry, stemming from the band inversion near the L points of its bulk Brillouin zone, which can be measured by angle-resolved photoemission. We have obtained the (111) surface of SnTe film by molecular beam epitaxy on BaF2(111) substrate. Photon-energy-dependence of in situ angle-resolved photoemission, covering multiple Brillouin zones in the direction perp…
Topological crystalline insulators are new states of matter in which the topological nature of electronic structures arises from crystal symmetries. Here we predict the first material realization of topological crystalline insulator in the semiconductor SnTe, by identifying its nonzero topological index. We predict that as a manifestation of this nontrivial topology, SnTe has metallic surface states with an even number of Dirac cones on high-symmetry crystal surfaces such as {001}, {110} and {111}. These surface states form a new type of high-mobility chiral electron gas, which is robust again…
We propose a minimal tight-binding model for thin films made of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) on the basis of the mirror and discrete rotational symmetries. The basic term consists of the spin-orbit interaction describing a Weyl semimetal, where gapless Dirac cones emerge at all the high symmetry points in the momentum space. We then introduce the mass term providing gaps to Dirac cones at our disposal. They simulate the thin films made of the [001], [111] and [110] TCI surfaces. TCI thin films are topological insulators protected by the mirror symmetry. We analyze the mirror-Chern n…
Nontrivial low-energy excitations of crystalline solids have insightfully strengthened understanding of elementary particles in quantum field theory. Usually, topological quasiparticles are mainly focused on fermions in topological semimetals. In this work, we alternatively show by first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis that ideal type-II Weyl phonons are present in zinc-blende cadmium telluride (CdTe), a well-known II-VI semiconductor. Importantly, these type-II Weyl phonons originate from the inversion between the longitudinal acoustic and transverse optical branches. Symmetry g…
Two-dimensional (2D) band crossing semimetals (BCSMs) could be used to build a range of novel nanoscale devices such as superlenses and transistors. We find that symmorphic symmetry can protect a new type of robust 2D BCSMs, unlike the previously proposed 2D essential BCSMs protected by non-symmorphic symmetry [Young et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 126803 (2015)]. This type of symmorphic symmetry protected (SSP) 2D essential BCSMs cannot be pair annihilated without destroying the crystalline symmetries, as opposed to the 2D BCSMs caused by the accidental band crossing. Through group theory analy…
