We study local centrally essential subalgebras in the algebra of all upper triangular matrices over a field of characteristic $\ne 2$. It is proved that the algebras of upper triangular $3\times 3$ or $4\times 4$ matrices have only commutative local centrally essential subalgebras. Every algebra of upper triangular matrices of order exceeding $6$ contains a non-commutative local centrally essential subalgebra.

We approach celebrated theorems of Burnside and Wedderburn via simultaneous triangularization. First, for a general field $F$, we prove that $M_n(F)$ is the only irrreducible subalgebra of triangularizable matrices in $M_n(F)$ provided such a subalgebra exists. This provides a slight generalization of a well-known theorem of Burnside. Next, for a given $n > 1$, we characterize all fields $F$ such that Burnside's Theorem holds in $M_n(F)$, i.e., $M_n(F)$ is the only irreducible subalgebra of itself. In fact, for a subfield $F$ of the center of a division ring $D$, our simple proof of the aforem…
Let $UT_4(F)$ be $4\times 4$ upper triangular matrix algebra over a field $F$ of characteristic zero and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the subalgebra of $UT_4(F)$ linearly generated by $\{\mathbf{e}_{ij}:1 \leq i\leq j \leq 4 \} \setminus \mathbf{e}_{23}$ where $\{\mathbf{e}_{ij} : 1 \leq i\leq j \leq 4\}$ is the standard basis of $UT_4(F)$. We describe the set of all $*$-polynomial identities for $\mathcal{A}$ with the involution defined by the reflection of second diagonal.
It has been conjectured by Gene Freudenburg that for a polynomial ring, the triangular Lie algebra is the maximal Lie algebra which lies in the set of locally nilpotent derivations of the ring. Also it was conjectured that each other maximal Lie algebra which lies in the set of locally nilpotent derivations of the polynomial ring is conjugated to the triangular Lie algebra. In the present work we prove the first part of this conjecture and provide the counterexample to the second part. Also we show that the second part of the conjecture holds for the maximal Lie algebras among locally nilpoten…
In this paper we study the lower triangular matrix $\mathbb{K}$-algebra $Λ:=\left[\begin{smallmatrix} T & 0 \\ M & U \end{smallmatrix}\right],$ where $U$ and $T$ are basic $\mathbb{K}$-algebras with enough idempotents and $M$ is an $U$-$T$-bimodule where $\mathbb{K}$ acts centrally. Moreover, we characterise in terms of $U,$ $T$ and $M$ when, on one hand, the lower triangular matrix $\mathbb{K}$-algebra $Λ$ is standardly stratified in the sense of the paper "A generalization theory of standardly stratified algebras I: Standardly stratified ringois"; and on another hand, when $Λ$ is locally bou…
We prove the existence of two long exact sequences relating the Hochschild cohomology of a triangular matrix algebra with the Hochschild homology of its component subalgebras. We also study the structure of the maps of the first sequence.
The main result of this paper is the following: if F is any field and R is any F-subalgebra of the algebra of nxn matrices over F with Lie nilpotence index m, then the F-dimension of R is less or equal than M(m+1,n), where M(m+1,n) is the maximum of a certain expression of m+1 nonnegative integers and n. The case m=1 reduces to a classical theorem of Schur (1905), later generalized by Jacobson (1944) to all fields, which asserts that if F is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and R is any commutative F-subalgebra of the full nxn matrix algebra over F, then the F-dimension of…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and $A$ an integral $K$-domain. The Lie algebra $Der_{K}(A)$ of all $K$-derivations of $A$ contains the set $LND(A)$ of all locally nilpotent derivations. The structure of $LND(A)$ is of great interest, and the question about properties of Lie algebras contained in $LND(A)$ is still open. An answer to it in the finite dimensional case is given. It is proved that any finite dimensional (over $K$) subalgebra of $Der_{K}(A)$ consisting of locally nilpotent derivations is nilpotent. In the case $A=K[x, y],$ it is also proved that any …
We determine the structure of the center and the trace space of the centrally extended preprojective algebra of an ADE quiver, introduced by the first and the third authors in math/0503393. It turns out that this structure has a mysterious relationship to the structure of the maximal nilpotent subalgebra of the corresponding simple Lie algebra.
Let $K$ be an arbitrary field of characteristic zero and $A$ a commutative associative $ K$-algebra which is an integral domain. Denote by $R$ the fraction field of $A$ and by $W(A)=RDer_{\mathbb K}A,$ the Lie algebra of $\mathbb K$-derivations of $R$ obtained from $Der_{\mathbb K}A$ via multiplication by elements of $R.$ If $L\subseteq W(A)$ is a subalgebra of $W(A)$ denote by $rk_{R}L$ the dimension of the vector space $RL$ over the field $R$ and by $F=R^{L}$ the field of constants of $L$ in $R.$ Let $L$ be a nilpotent subalgebra $L\subseteq W(A)$ with $rk_{R}L\leq 3$. It is proven that the …
In commutative algebra, a Weitzenböck derivation is a nonzero triangular linear derivation of the polynomial algebra $K[x_1,...,x_m]$ in several variables over a field $K$ of characteristic 0. The classical theorem of Weitzenböck states that the algebra of constants is finitely generated. (This algebra coincides with the algebra of invariants of a single unipotent transformation.) In this paper we study the problem of finite generation of the algebras of constants of triangular linear derivations of finitely generated (not necessarily commutative or associative) algebras over $K$ assuming that…
We introduce a general axiomatic framework for algebras with triangular decomposition, which allows for a systematic study of the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand Category $\mathcal{O}$. The framework is stated via three relatively simple axioms; algebras satisfying them are termed "regular triangular algebras (RTAs)". These encompass a large class of algebras in the literature, including (a) generalized Weyl algebras, (b) symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$, (c) quantum groups $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ over "lattices with possible torsion", (d) infinitesimal Hecke algebras, (e) higher rank…
In this paper, we present an approach to the definition of multiparameter quantum groups by studying Hopf algebras with triangular decomposition. Classifying all of these Hopf algebras which are of what we call weakly separable type over a group, we obtain a class of pointed Hopf algebras which can be viewed as natural generalizations of multiparameter deformations of universal enveloping algebras of Lie algebras. These Hopf algebras are instances of a new version of braided Drinfeld doubles, which we call asymmetric braided Drinfeld doubles. This is a generalization of an earlier result by Be…
A deeper understanding of recent computations of the Brauer group of Hopf algebras is attained by explaining why a direct product decomposition for this group holds and describing the non-interpreted factor occurring in it. For a Hopf algebra $B$ in a braided monoidal category $\C$, and under certain assumptions on the braiding (fulfilled if $\C$ is symmetric), we construct a sequence for the Brauer group $\BM(\C;B)$ of $B$-module algebras, generalizing Beattie's one. It allows one to prove that $\BM(\C;B) \cong \Br(\C) \times \Gal(\C;B),$ where $\Br(\C)$ is the Brauer group of $\C$ and $\Gal(…
Given a sequence $\vec d=(d_1,\dots,d_k)$ of natural numbers, we consider the Lie subalgebra $\mathfrak{h}$ of $\mathfrak{gl}(d,\mathbb{F})$, where $d=d_1+\cdots +d_k$ and $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic 0, generated by two block upper triangular matrices $D$ and $E$ partitioned according to $\vec d$, and study the problem of computing the nilpotency degree $m$ of the nilradical $\mathfrak{n}$ of $\mathfrak{h}$. We obtain a complete answer when $D$ and $E$ belong to a certain family of matrices that arises naturally when attempting to classify the indecomposable modules of certain so…
