A novel quality of service (QoS) management algorithm for home networks is presented in this letter. The algorithm is based on service prediction for intelligent QoS management. The service prediction is carried out by a general regression neural network with a profile containing the past records of the service. A novel profile updating technique is proposed so that the profile size can remain small for fast bandwidth allocation. The analytical study and experiments over real LAN reveal that the proposed algorithm provides reliable QoS management for home networks with low computational overhead.
A Mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) is a self configurable network connected by wireless links. This type of network is only suitable for temporary communication links as it is infrastructure-less and there is no centralised control. Providing QoS aware routing is a challenging task in this type of network due to dynamic topology and limited resources. The main purpose of QoS aware routing is to find a feasible path from source to destination which will satisfy two or more end to end QoS constrains. Therefore, the task of designing an efficient routing algorithm which will satisfy all the quality …
In Multi-Channel Multi-Radio Wireless Mesh Networks (MCMR-WMN), finding the optimal routing by satisfying the Quality of Service (QoS) constraints is an ambitious task. Multiple paths are available from the source node to the gateway for reliability, and sometimes it is necessary to deal with failures of the link in WMN. A major challenge in a MCMR-WMN is finding the routing with QoS satisfied and an interference free path from the redundant paths, in order to transmit the packets through this path. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is an optimization technique to find the candidate soluti…
The large scale content distribution systems were improved broadly using the replication techniques. The demanded contents can be brought closer to the clients by multiplying the source of information geographically, which in turn reduce both the access latency and the network traffic. The system scalability can be improved by distributing the load across multiple servers which is proposed by replication. If a copy of the requested object (e.g., a web page or an image) is located in its closer proximity then the clients would feel low access latency. Depending on the position of the replicas, …
MANET is a collection of mobile devices with no centralized control and no pre-existing infrastructures. Due to the nodal mobility, supporting QoS during routing in this type of networks is a very challenging task. To tackle this type of overhead many routing algorithms with clustering approach have been proposed. Clustering is an effective method for resource management regarding network performance, routing protocol design, QoS etc. Most of the flat network architecture contains homogeneous capacity of nodes but in real time nodes are with heterogeneous capacity and transmission power. Hiera…
With the pervasive network based services in smart homes, traditional network management cannot guarantee end-user quality-of-experience (QoE) for all applications. End-user QoE must be supported by efficient network quality-of-service (QoS) measurement and efficient network resource allocation. With the software-defined network technology, the core network may be controlled more efficiently by a network service provider. However, end-to-end network QoS can hardly be improved the managing the core network only. In this paper, we propose an encrypted packet classification scheme for smart home …

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication technology is regarded as an efficient and effective solution for some special application scenarios where existing terrestrial infrastructures are overloaded to provide reliable services. To maximize the utility of the UAV-enabled system while meeting the QoS and energy constraints, the UAV needs to plan its trajectory considering the dynamic characteristics of scenarios, which is formulated as the Markov Decision Process (MDP). To solve the above problem, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based scheme is proposed here, which predicts …
Benefiting from the widely deployed LTE infrastructures, the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks have been becoming a critical enabler for the emerging vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. However, existing LTE networks cannot efficiently support stringent but dynamic requirements of V2X services. One effective solution to overcome this challenge is network slicing, whereby different services could be supported by logically separated networks. To mitigate the increasing complexity of network slicing in 5G, we propose to leverage the recent advancement of Machine Learning (ML) techno…

In the next generation wireless networks, the growing demand for new wireless applications is accompanied with high expectations for better quality of service (QoS) fulfillment especially for multimedia applications. Furthermore, the coexistence of future unlicensed users with existing licensed users is becoming a challenging task in the next generation communication systems to overcome the underutilization of the spectrum. A QoS and interference aware resource allocation is thus of special interest in order to respond to the heterogeneous constraints of the next generation networks. In this w…
Channel Bonding (CB) is a technique used to provide larger bandwidth to users. It has been applied to various networks such as wireless local area networks (WLANs), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs), and Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSNs). The implementation of CB in CRSNs needs special attention as Primary Radio (PR) nodes traffic must be protected from any harmful interference by Cognitive Radio (CR) nodes. On the other hand, CR nodes need to communicate without interruption to meet their data rate requirements. If CR nodes perform frequent channel switchi…

Multi-access/mobile edge computing (MEC) has been proposed as a potential solution for such services by bringing them closer to vehicles. Yet, this introduces a new set of challenges such as where to place these V2X services, especially given the limit …
In recent years the number of IoT devices in home networks has increased dramatically. Whenever a new device connects to the network, it must be quickly managed and secured using the relevant security mechanism or QoS policy. Thus a key challenge is to distinguish between IoT and NoT devices in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, there is no clear indication of whether a device in a network is an IoT. In this paper, we propose different classifiers that identify a device as IoT or non-IoT, in a short time scale, and with high accuracy. Our classifiers were constructed using machine learning te…
