The gravitational-wave signal GW190814 involves a compact object with mass $(2.50-2.67){\rm M}_\odot$ within the so-called low mass gap. As yet, a general consensus on its nature, being a black hole, a neutron star or an exotic star, has not been achieved. We investigate the possibility this compact object to be an anisotropic neutron star. Anisotropies in a neutron star core arise naturally by effects such as superfluidity, hyperons, strong magnetic fields and allow the maximum mass to exceed that of the ideally isotropic stars. We consider the Krori-Barua ansatz to model an anisotropic core and constrain the equation of state with LIGO/Virgo observations GW170817 and GW190814. We find that the GW190814 secondary component can be an anisotropic neutron star compatible with LIGO/Virgo constraints if the radius attains a value in the range $(13.2-14.0)\,{\rm km}$ with the anisotropic core's boundary density in the range $(3.5-4.0)\cdot 10^{14}{\rm g}/{\rm cm}^3$.
The merger of black hole-neutron star binaries can eject substantial material with the mass ~0.01-0.1M_sun when the neutron star is disrupted prior to the merger. The ejecta shows significant anisotropy, and travels in a particular direction with the bulk velocity ~0.2c. This is drastically different from the binary neutron star merger, for which ejecta is nearly isotropic. Anisotropic ejecta brings electromagnetic-counterpart diversity which is unique to black hole-neutron star binaries, such as viewing-angle dependence, polarization, and proper motion. The kick velocity of the black hole, gr…
Dense nuclear matter is expected to be anisotropic due to effects such as solidification, superfluidity, strong magnetic fields, hyperons, pion-condesation. Therefore an anisotropic neutron star core seems more realistic than an ideally isotropic one. We model anisotropic neutron stars working in the Krori-Barua (KB) ansatz without preassuming an equation of state. We show that the physics of general KB solutions is encapsulated in the compactness. Imposing physical and stability requirements yields a maximum allowed compactness $2GM/Rc^2 < 0.71$ for a KB-spacetime. We further input observatio…
The recent detection of GW190814 featured the merger of a binary with a primary having a mass of $\sim 23\,M_{\odot}$ and a secondary with a mass of $\sim 2.6\,M_{\odot}$. While the primary was most likely a black hole, the secondary could be interpreted as either the lightest black hole or the most massive neutron star ever observed, but also as the indication of a novel class of exotic compact objects. We here argue that the secondary in GW190814 needs not be an ab-initio black hole nor an exotic object; rather, based on our current understanding of the nuclear-matter equation of state, it c…
The gravitational wave event GW170817 associated with the short gamma-ray burst (GRB) 170817A confirms that binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are one of the origins of short GRBs. The associated kilonova emission, radioactively powered by nucleosynthesized heavy elements, was also detected. Black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) mergers have been argued to be another promising origin candidate of short GRBs and kilonovae. Numerical simulations show that the ejecta in BH-NS mergers is geometrically much more anisotropic than the BNS merger case. In this paper, we investigate observational signatures o…
Neutron stars (NSs) are excellent natural laboratories to constrain gravity on strong field regime and nuclear matter in extreme conditions. Motivated by the recent discovery of a compact object with $2.59^{+0.08}_{-0.09} M_\odot$ in the binary merger GW190814, if this object was a NS, it serves as a strong constraint on the NS equation of state (EoS), ruling out several soft EoSs favored by GW170817 event. In this work, we revisit the question of the maximum mass of NSs considering a chameleon screening (thin-shell effect) on the NS mass-radius relation, where the microscopic physics inside t…
In this work we obtain an anisotropic neutron star solution by gravitational decoupling starting from a perfect fluid configuration which has been used to model the compact object PSR J0348+0432. Additionally, we consider the same solution to model the Binary Pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 and X-ray Binaries Her X-1 and Cen X-3 ones. We study the acceptability conditions and obtain that the MGD--deformed solution obey the same physical requirements as its isotropic counterpart. Finally, we conclude that the most stable solutions, according to the adiabatic index and gravitational cracking criterion, …
In this work we construct families of anisotropic neutron stars for an equation of state compatible with the constraints of the gravitational-wave event GW170817 and for four anisotropy ansatze. Such stars are subjected to a radial perturbation in order to study their stability against radial oscillations and we develop a dynamical model to describe the non-adiabatic gravitational collapse of the unstable anisotropic configurations whose ultimate fate is the formation of a black hole. We find that the standard criterion for radial stability $dM/dρ_c >0$ is not always compatible with the calcul…
A new class of solutions describing analytical solutions for compact stellar structures has been developed within the tenets of General Relativity. Considering the inherent anisotropy in compact stars, a stable and causal model for realistic anisotropic neutron stars was obtained using the general theory of relativity. Assuming a physically acceptable non-singular form of one metric potential and radial pressure containing the curvature parameter $R$, the constant $k$, and the radius $r$, analytical solutions to Einstein's field equations for anisotropic matter distribution were obtained. Taki…
One of the most common assumptions has been made that the pressure inside the star is isotropic in nature. However, the pressure is locally anisotropic in nature which is a more realistic case. In this study, we investigate certain properties of anisotropic neutron stars with the scalar pressure anisotropy model. Different perfect fluid conditions are tested within the star with the relativistic mean-field model equation of states (EOSs). The anisotropic neutron star properties such as mass ($M$), radius ($R$), compactness ($C$), Love number ($k_2$), dimensionless tidal deformability ($Λ$), an…
We consider static neutron stars within the framework of $R^2$ gravity. The neutron fluid is described by three different types of realistic equations of state (soft, moderately stiff, and stiff). Using the observational data on the neutron star mass-radius relation, it is demonstrated that the characteristics of the objects supported by the isotropic fluid agree with the observations only if one uses the soft equation of state. We show that the inclusion of the fluid anisotropy enables one also to employ more stiff equations of state to model configurations that will satisfy the observational…
We introduce a classification scheme of the post-merger dynamics and gravitational-wave emission in binary neutron star mergers, after identifying a new mechanism by which a secondary peak in the gravitational-wave spectrum is produced. It is caused by a spiral deformation, the pattern of which rotates slower with respect to the double-core structure in center of the remnant. This secondary peak is typically well separated in frequency from the secondary peak produced by a nonlinear interaction between a quadrupole and a quasi-radial oscillation. The new mechanism allows for an explanation of …
As we know, the effect of strong magnetic field causes the anisotropy for the magnetized compact objects. Therefore, in this paper, we have studied the structure properties of anisotropic case of magnetized neutron star. We have derived the equation of state (EoS) of neutron star matter for two forms of magnetic fields, one uniform and one density dependent. We have solved the generalized Tolman Oppenheimer Volkoff equations to examine the maximum mass and corresponding radius, Schwarzschild radius, graviitational redshift, Kretschmann scalar, and Buchdahl theorem for this system. It was shown…
One of the most common assumptions in the study of neutron star models and their oscillations is that the pressure is isotopic, however there are arguments that this may not be correct. Thus in the present paper we make a first step towards studying the nonradial oscillations of neutron stars with an anisotropic pressure. We adopt the so-called Cowling approximation where the spacetime metric is kept fixed and the oscillation spectrum for the first few fluid modes is obtained. The effect of the anisotropy on the frequencies is apparent, although with the present results it might be hard to dis…
Some models (such as the Skyrme model, a low-energy effective field theory for QCD) suggest that the high-density matter prevailing in neutron star interiors may be significantly anisotropic. Anisotropy is known to affect the bulk properties of nonrotating neutron stars in General Relativity. In this paper we study the effects of anisotropy on slowly rotating stars in General Relativity. We also consider one of the most popular extensions of Einstein's theory, namely scalar-tensor theories allowing for spontaneous scalarization (a phase transition similar to spontaneous magnetization in ferrom…
Within the framework of $f(R,T)$ theories of gravity, we investigate the hydrostatic equilibrium of anisotropic neutron stars with a physically relevant equation of state (EoS) for the radial pressure. In particular, we focus on the $f(R,T) = R+ 2βT$ model, where $β$ is a minimal coupling constant. In the slowly rotating approximation, we derive the modified TOV equations and the expression for the relativistic moment of inertia. The main properties of neutron stars, such as radius, mass and moment of inertia, are studied in detail. Our results revel that the main consequence of the $2βT$ term…

We use gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) observations of GW170817 to constrain the extent of pressure anisotropy in it. While it is quite likely that the pressure inside a neutron star is mostly isotropic, certain physical processes or characteristics, such as phase transitions in nuclear matter or the presence of strong magnetic fields, can introduce pressure anisotropy. In this work, we show that anisotropic pressure in neutron stars can reduce their tidal deformability substantially. For the anisotropy-pressure model of Bowers and Liang and a couple of relativistic EOSs -- DD…
We investigate the properties of anisotropic, spherically symmetric compact stars, especially neutron stars and strange quark stars, made of strongly magnetized matter. The neutron stars are described by SLy equation of state, the strange quark stars by an equation of state based on the MIT Bag model. The stellar models are based on an a priori assumed density dependence of the magnetic field and thus anisotropy. Our study shows that not only the presence of a strong magnetic field and anisotropy, but also the orientation of the magnetic field itself, have an important influence on the physica…
We investigate the causal limit of maximum mass for stars in the framework of$f(R)$ gravity. We choose a causal equation of state, with variable speed of sound, and with the transition density and pressure corresponding to the SLy equation of state. The transition density is chosen to be equal to twice the saturation density $ρ_t\sim 2ρ_0$, and also the analysis is performed for the transition density, chosen to be equal to the saturation density $ρ_t\sim ρ_0$. We examine numerically the combined effect of the stiff causal equation of state and of the sound speed on the maximum mass of static …
In this work, we have investigated anisotropic neutron stars in the framework of Rastall-Rainbow gravity. All our calculations were computed using the IU-FSU realistic equation of state (EoS), in which was considered two cases: standard nucleonic composition and the one with the eight lightest baryons. From the neutron star masses and radii obtained we conclude that anisotropic pressure has significant consequences on the structure of stellar objects. In particular, when anisotropy is considered within the general relativity framework, it significantly modifies the maximum stellar mass. On the…
The modified gravity (MOG) theory is applied to the gravitational wave binary merger GW190814 to demonstrate that the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation for a neutron star can produce a mass $M=2.6 -2.7 M_\odot$, allowing for the binary secondary component to be identified as a heavy neutron star in the hypothesized mass gap $2.5 - 5 M_\odot$.
We consider mixed configurations consisting of a wormhole filled by a strongly magnetized isotropic or anisotropic neutron fluid. The nontrivial topology of the spacetime is allowed by the presence of exotic matter. By comparing these configurations with ordinary magnetized neutron stars, we clarify the question of how the presence of the nontrivial topology influences the magnetic field distribution inside the fluid. In the case of an anisotropic fluid, we find new solutions describing configurations, where the maximum of the fluid density is shifted from the center. A linear stability analys…
The recent discovery by LIGO/Virgo of a merging binary having a $\sim 23 M_\odot$ black hole and a $\sim 2.6 M_\odot$ compact companion has triggered a debate regarding the nature of the secondary, which falls into the so-called mass gap. Here we explore some consequences of the assumption that the secondary was a neutron star (NS). We show with concrete examples of heretofore viable equations of state (EOSs) that rapid uniform rotation may neither be necessary for some EOSs nor sufficient for others to explain the presence of a NS. Absolute upper limits for the maximum mass of a spherical NS …
In this paper, we developed three analytical models and obtained a new class of solutions describing compact stellar structures using the theory of teleparallel gravity. We consider the general anisotropic nature of stellar configurations and solve teleparallel gravity equations. In order to thoroughly analyze the various parameters of the stars, we developed three models by choosing various physically acceptable forms of metric potential $ e^{d(r)} $ and radial pressure $ p_r(r) $. We also analyze the impact of teleparallel gravity's parameters $ β$ and $ β_1 $ on the description of the stell…
We consider neutron-star-plus-wormhole configurations supported by a massless ghost scalar field. The neutron fluid is modeled by an anisotropic equation of state. When the central energy density of the fluid is of comparable magnitude to the one of the scalar field, configurations with an equator at the center and a double throat arise. These double-throat wormholes can be either partially or completely filled by the neutron fluid. In the latter case, the passage of light - radiated by the neutron matter - through these wormholes is studied. A stability analysis indicates that all considered …
We present a class of exact solutions of Einstein's gravitational field equations describing spherically symmetric and static anisotropic stellar type configurations. The solutions are obtained by assuming a particular form of the anisotropy factor. The energy density and both radial and tangential pressures are finite and positive inside the anisotropic star. Numerical results show that the basic physical parameters (mass and radius) of the model can describe realistic astrophysical objects like neutron stars.
The first detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger (GW170817) and the accompanying electromagnetic emission has impressively advanced our understanding of the merger process and has set some first constraints on the macroscopic properties of neutron stars, with direct implications for the high-density equation of state. We discuss work on neutron star mergers focusing on the postmerger gravitational-wave emission. These studies are based on numerical simulations of the merger and survey a large sample of candidate equations of state for neutron star matter. The goal i…
Tidal deformability of a coalescing neutron star subjected to an external tidal field plays an important role in our probe for the structure and properties of compact stars. In particular, the tidal love number provides valuable information about the external gravitational field responsible for deforming the star. In this article, we compute the tidal love number of a particular class of anisotropic stars and analyze the impacts of anisotropy and compactness on the tidal love number.

In the present article we have obtained new set of exact solutions of Einstein field equations for anisotropic fluid spheres by using the Herrera et al.[1] algorithm. The anisotropic fluid solution so obtained join continuously to Schwarzschild exterior solution across the pressure free boundary. It is observed that most of the new anisotropic solutions are well behaved and utilized to construct the super-dense star models such as neutron star and pulsars.
