In this paper, we give a purely bijective proof that two different partition classes that are both combinatorial interpretations of the partition function $p_ν(n)$, a partition function related to the third order mock theta function $ν(q)$, are equinumerous. In doing so, we give a partial solution to a combinatorial problem proposed in a paper by Andrews.
In this paper, we study classes of subexcedant functions enumerated by the Bell numbers and present bijections on set partitions. We present a set of permutations whose transposition arrays are the restricted growth functions, thus defining Bell permutations of the second kind. We describe a bijection between Bell permutations of the first kind (introduced by Ponti and Vajnovzski) and the second kind. We present two other Bell number enumerated classes of subexcedant functions. Further, we present bijections on set partitions, in particular, an involution that interchanges the set of merging b…
The celebrated Rogers-Ramanujan identities equate the number of integer partitions of $n$ ($n\in\mathbb N_0$) with parts congruent to $\pm 1 \pmod{5}$ (respectively $\pm 2 \pmod{5}$) and the number of partitions of $n$ with super-distinct parts (respectively super-distinct parts greater than $1$). In this paper, we establish companion identities to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities on the number of parts in all partitions of $n$ of the aforementioned types, in the spirit of earlier work by Andrews and Beck on a partition identity of Euler.
We present a direct bijection between planar 3-connected triangulations and bridgeless planar maps, which were first enumerated by Tutte (1962) and Walsh and Lehman (1975) respectively. Previously known bijections by Wormald (1980) and Fusy (2010) are all defined recursively. Our direct bijection passes by a new class of combinatorial objects called "sticky trees". We also present bijections between sticky trees, intervals in the Tamari lattices and closed flows on forests. With our bijections, we recover several known enumerative results about these objects. We thus show that sticky trees can…
Phylogenetic trees are binary nonplanar trees with labelled leaves, and plane oriented recursive trees are planar trees with an increasing labelling. Both families are enumerated by double factorials. A bijection is constructed, using the respective representations a 2-partitions and trapezoidal words.
In this paper we establish six bijections between a particular class of polyominoes, called deco polyominoes, enumerated according to their directed height by n!, and permutations. Each of these bijections allows us to establish different correspondences between classical statistics on deco polyominoes and on permutations.
The Fibonacci numbers are the prototypical example of a recursive sequence, but grow too quickly to enumerate sets of integer partitions. The same is true for the other classical sequences $a(n)$ defined by Fibonacci-like recursions: the tribonacci, Padovan, Pell, Narayana's cows, and Lucas sequences. For each sequence $a(n)$, however, we can define a related sequence $\textrm{sa}(n)$ by defining $\textrm{sa}(n)$ to have the same recurrence and initial conditions as $a(n)$, except that $\textrm{sa}(2n)=\textrm{sa}(n)$. Growth is no longer a problem: for each $n$ we construct recursively a set …
We give a bijection between the set of self-conjugate partitions and that of ordinary partitions. Also, we show the relation between hook lengths of self conjugate partition and corresponding partition via the bijection. As a corollary, we give new combinatorial interpretations for the Catalan number and the Motzkin number in terms of self-conjugate simultaneous core partitions.
We define a map between the set of permutations that avoid either the four patterns $3214,3241,4213,4231$ or $3124,3142,4123,4132$, and the set of Dyck prefixes. This map, when restricted to either of the two classes, turns out to be a bijection that allows us to determine some notable features of these permutations, such as the distribution of the statistics "number of ascents", "number of left-to-right maxima", "first element", and "position of the maximum element"
We study a curious class of partitions, the parts of which obey an exceedingly strict congruence condition we refer to as "sequential congruence": the $m$th part is congruent to the $(m+1)$th part modulo $m$, with the smallest part congruent to zero modulo the length of the partition. It turns out these obscure-seeming objects are embedded in a natural way in partition theory. We show that sequentially congruent partitions with largest part $n$ are in bijection with the partitions of $n$. Moreover, we show sequentially congruent partitions induce a bijection between partitions of $n$ and parti…
We give short elementary expositions of combinatorial proofs of some variants of Euler's partitition problem that were first addressed analytically by George Andrews, and later combinatorially by others. Our methods, based on ideas from a previous paper by the author , enable us to state and prove new generalizations of two of these results.
We provide a bijective map from the partitions enumerated by the series side of the Rogers-Selberg mod 7 identities onto partitions associated with a special case of Basil Gordon's combinatorial generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. The implications of applying the same map to a special case of David Bressoud's even modulus analog of Gordon's theorem are also explored.
For each positive integer $n$, we construct a bijection between the odd partitions and the distinct partitions of $n$ which extends Bressoud's bijection between the odd-and-distinct partitions of $n$ and the splitting partitions of $n$. We compare our bijection with the classical bijections of Glaisher and Sylvester, and also with a recent bijection due to Chen, Gao, Ji and Li.
We find bijections on 2-distant noncrossing partitions, 12312-avoiding partitions, 3-Motzkin paths, UH-free Schr{ö}der paths and Schr{ö}der paths without peaks at even height. We also give a direct bijection between 2-distant noncrossing partitions and 12312-avoiding partitions.
In a work of 1995, Alladi, Andrews, and Gordon provided a generalization of the two Capparelli identities involving certain classes of integer partitions. Inspired by that contribution, in particular as regards the general setting and the tools the authors employed, we obtain new partition identities by identifying further sets of partitions that can be explicitly put into a one-to-one correspondence by the method described in the 1995 paper. As a further result, although of a different nature, we obtain an analytical identity of Rogers-Ramanujan type, involving generating functions, for a cla…
Bargraphs are a special class of convex polyominoes. They can be identified with lattice paths with unit steps north, east, and south that start at the origin, end on the $x$-axis, and stay strictly above the $x$-axis everywhere except at the endpoints. Bargraphs, which are used to represent histograms and to model polymers in statistical physics, have been enumerated in the literature by semiperimeter and by several other statistics, using different methods such as the wasp-waist decomposition of Bousquet-Mélou and Rechnitzer, and a bijection with certain Motzkin paths. In this paper we descr…
We present an elementary type preserving bijection between noncrossing and nonnesting partitions for all classical reflection groups, answering a question of Athanasiadis.
We present the new combinatorial class of product-coproduct prographs which are planar assemblies of two types of operators: products having two inputs and a single output and coproducts having a single input and two outputs. We show that such graphs are enumerated by the $3$-dimensional Catalan numbers. We present some combinatorial bijections positioning product-coproduct prographs as key objects to probe families of objects enumerated by the $3$-dimensional Catalan numbers.
The class of fighting fish is a recently introduced model of branching surfaces generalizing parallelogram polyominoes. We can alternatively see them as gluings of cells, walks on the square lattice confined to the quadrant or shuffle of Dyck words. With these different points of view, we introduce a natural extension of fighting fish that we call \emph{generalized fighting fish}. We show that generalized fighting fish are exactly the Mullin codes of rooted planar maps endowed with their unique rightmost depth-first search spanning tree, also known as Lehman-Lenormand code. In particular, this…
In this note a bijection is constructed between the set of partitions of n simultaneously s-regular and t-distinct, and those simultaneously t-regular and s-distinct. Some implications of the map are discussed. As a generalized version of Glaisher's bijection, the map may be widely useful in other partition combinatorics. A previous conjecture concerning iterations of Glaisher's bijection is given a counterexample.
In the study of the algebra $\mathrm{NCSym}$ of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables, Bergeron and Zabrocki found a free generating set consisting of power sum symmetric functions indexed by atomic partitions. On the other hand, Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki studied another free generating set of $\mathrm{NCSym}$ consisting of monomial symmetric functions indexed by unsplitable partitions. Can and Sagan raised the question of finding a bijection between atomic partitions and unsplitable partitions. In this paper, we provide such a bijection.
Recently, Schneider and Schneider defined a new class of partitions called sequentially congruent partitions, in which each part is congruent to the next part modulo its index, and they proved two partition bijections involving these partitions. We introduce a new partition notation specific to sequentially congruent partitions which allows us to more easily study these bijections and their compositions, and we reinterpret them in terms of Young diagram transformations. We also define a generalization of sequentially congruent partitions, and we provide several new partition bijections for the…
We generalize the well known Glaisher partition bijection result. For given positive integers n, d, both greater than 1, we provide a rich family of bijections between the set of partitions of n where at least one part is divisible by d, and the set of partitions where at least one part appears d or more times.
Plane increasing trees are rooted labeled trees embedded into the plane such that the sequence of labels is increasing on any branch starting at the root. Relaxed binary trees are a subclass of unlabeled directed acyclic graphs. We construct a bijection between these two combinatorial objects and study the therefrom arising connections of certain parameters. Furthermore, we show central limit theorems for two statistics on leaves. We end the study by considering more than 20 subclasses and their bijective counterparts. Many of these subclasses are enumerated by known counting sequences, and th…
We present a direct bijection between descending plane partitions with no special parts and permutation matrices. This bijection has the desirable property that the number of parts of the descending plane partition corresponds to the inversion number of the permutation. Additionally, the number of maximum parts in the descending plane partition corresponds to the position of the one in the last column of the permutation matrix. We also discuss the possible extension of this approach to finding a bijection between descending plane partitions and alternating sign matrices.
In 1997, Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson stated a broad generalization of Euler's distinct-odd partition theorem, namely the $(k,l)$-Euler theorem. Their identity involved the $(k,l)$-lecture-hall partitions, which, unlike usual difference conditions of partitions in Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, satisfy some ratio constraints. In a 2008 paper, in response to a question suggested by Richard Stanley, Savage and Yee provided a simple bijection for the $l$-lecture-hall partitions (the case $k=l$), whose specialization in $l=2$ corresponds to Sylvester's bijection. Subsequently, as an open questio…
We present a bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts, which respects the quadruple of statistics considered by Behrend, Di Francesco and Zinn--Justin. This bijection involves the inversion words of permutations and the "usual" representation of descending plane partitions as families of non--intersec\-ting lattice paths.
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to an error in Lemma 3, making the (bijective) proof of Theorem 4 and Corollary 5 invalid (symmetry of k-nonnesting and k-noncrossing set partitions).
We construct a direct natural bijection between descending plane partitions without any special part and permutations. The directness is in the sense that the bijection avoids any reference to nonintersecting lattice paths. The advantage of the bijection is that it provides an interpretation for the seemingly long list of conditions needed to define descending plane partitions. Unfortunately, the bijection does not relate the number of parts of the descending plane partition with the number of inversions of the permutation as one might have expected from the conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Ru…
We present a simple bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts. This bijection is already mentioned in work of P. Lalonde (without giving the details); it involves the inversion words of permutations and the (well-known) representation of descending plane partitions as families of non--intersecting lattice paths. (Taking a short detour, we will also exhibit how the (well--known) enumeration of descending plane partitions follows easily from the evaluation of Andrew's determinant.)
We construct weight-preserving bijections between column strict shifted plane partitions with one row and alternating sign trapezoids with exactly one column in the left half that sums to $1$. Amongst other things, they relate the number of $-1$s in the alternating sign trapezoids to certain elements in the column strict shifted plane partitions that generalise the notion of special parts in descending plane partitions. The advantage of these bijections is that they include configurations with $-1$s, which is a feature that many of the bijections in the realm of alternating sign arrays lack.
This note introduces some bijections relating core partitions and tuples of integers. We apply these bijections to count the number of cores with various types of restriction, including fixed number of parts, limited size of parts, parts divisible by some integer, and distinct parts. For example, we prove that the number of $2t$-core partitions into $l$ even parts equals the number of $t$-core partitions into $l$ parts. We also generalize one expression for simultaneous cores, which was given by Baek, Nam and Yu, recently. Subsequently, we use this expression to obtain recurrence satisfied by …
A theorem of Andrews equates partitions in which no part is repeated more than 2k-1 times to partitions in which, if j appears at least k times, all parts less than j also do so. This paper proves the theorem bijectively, with some of the generalizations that usually arise from such proofs.
In our previous paper, we determined a unified combinatorial framework to look at a large number of colored partition identities, and studied the five identities corresponding to the exceptional modular equations of prime degree of the Schroeter, Russell and Ramanujan type. The goal of this paper is to use the master bijection of our previous work to show combinatorially several new and highly nontrivial colored partition identities. We conclude by listing a number of further interesting identities of the same type as conjectures.
Using a combinatorial bijection with certain abaci diagrams, Nath and Sellers have enumerated $(s, m s \pm 1)$-core partitions into distinct parts. We generalize their result in several directions by including the number of parts of these partitions, by considering $d$-distinct partitions, and by allowing more general $(s, m s \pm r)$-core partitions. As an application of our approach, we obtain the average and maximum number of parts of these core partitions.
We present a bijection between non-crossing partitions of the set $[2n+1]$ into $n+1$ blocks such that no block contains two consecutive integers, and the set of sequences $\{s_{i}\}_{1}^{n}$ such that $1 \leq s_{i} \leq i$, and if $s_{i}=j$, then $s_{i-r} \leq j-r$ for $1 \leq r \leq j-1$.
It is well-known that Catalan numbers $C_n = \frac{1}{n+1} \binom{2n}{n}$ count the number of dominant regions in the Shi arrangement of type $A$, and that they also count partitions which are both $n$-cores as well as $(n+1)$-cores. These concepts have natural extensions, which we call here the $m$-Catalan numbers and $m$-Shi arrangement. In this paper, we construct a bijection between dominant regions of the $m$-Shi arrangement and partitions which are both $n$-cores as well as $(mn+1)$-cores. The bijection is natural in the sense that it commutes with the action of the affine symmetric grou…
We say two posets are "doppelgängers" if they have the same number of $P$-partitions of each height $k$. We give a uniform framework for bijective proofs that posets are doppelgängers by synthesizing $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus techniques of H. Thomas and A. Yong with M. Haiman's rectification bijection and an observation of R. Proctor. Geometrically, these bijections reflect the rational equivalence of certain subvarieties of minuscule flag manifolds. As a special case, we provide the first bijective proof of a 1983 theorem of R. Proctor---that plane partitions of height $k$ in a rectangl…
We extend Schaeffer's bijection between rooted quadrangulations and well-labeled trees to the general case of Eulerian planar maps with prescribed face valences, to obtain a bijection with a new class of labeled trees, which we call mobiles. Our bijection covers all the classes of maps previously enumerated by either the two-matrix model used by physicists or by the bijection with blossom trees used by combinatorists. Our bijection reduces the enumeration of maps to that, much simpler, of mobiles and moreover keeps track of the geodesic distance within the initial maps via the mobiles' labels.…
The total number of noncrossing partitions of type $Ψ$ is the $n$th Catalan number $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ when $Ψ=A_{n-1}$, and the binomial $\binom{2n}{n}$ when $Ψ=B_n$, and these numbers coincide with the correspondent number of nonnesting partitions. For type A, there are several bijective proofs of this equality, being the intuitive map that locally converts each crossing to a nesting one of them. In this paper we present a bijection between nonnesting and noncrossing partitions of types A and B that generalizes the type A bijection that locally converts each crossing to a nesting.
Johnson recently proved Armstrong's conjecture which states that the average size of an $(a,b)$-core partition is $(a+b+1)(a-1)(b-1)/24$. He used various coordinate changes and one-to-one correspondences that are useful for counting problems about simultaneous core partitions. We give an expression for the number of $(b_1,b_2,\cdots, b_n)$-core partitions where $\{b_1,b_2,\cdots,b_n\}$ contains at least one pair of relatively prime numbers. We also evaluate the largest size of a self-conjugate $(s,s+1,s+2)$-core partition.
Let $\ell,k$ be fixed positive integers. In an earlier work, the first and third authors established a bijection between $\ell$-cores with first part equal to $k$ and $(\ell-1)$-cores with first part less than or equal to $k$. This paper gives several new interpretations of that bijection. The $\ell$-cores index minimal length coset representatives for $\widetilde{S_{\ell}} / S_{\ell}$ where $\widetilde{S_{\ell}}$ denotes the affine symmetric group and $S_{\ell}$ denotes the finite symmetric group. In this setting, the bijection has a beautiful geometric interpretation in terms of the root lat…
In 2006, Chapoton defined a class of Tamari intervals called "new intervals" in his enumeration of Tamari intervals, and he found that these new intervals are equi-enumerated with bipartite planar maps. We present here a direct bijection between these two classes of objects using a new object called "degree tree". Our bijection also gives an intuitive proof of an unpublished equi-distribution result of some statistics on new intervals given by Chapoton and Fusy.
In 2007, D.I. Panyushev defined a remarkable map on the set of nonnesting partitions (antichains in the root poset of a finite Weyl group). In this paper we identify Panyushev's map with the Kreweras complement on the set of noncrossing partitions, and hence construct the first uniform bijection between nonnesting and noncrossing partitions. Unfortunately, the proof that our construction is well-defined is case-by-case, using a computer in the exceptional types. Fortunately, the proof involves new and interesting combinatorics in the classical types. As consequences, we prove several conjectur…
Although both noncrossing partitions and nonnesting partitions are uniformly enumerated for Weyl groups, the exact relationship between these two sets of combinatorial objects remains frustratingly mysterious. In this paper, we give a precise combinatorial answer in the case of the symmetric group: for any standard Coxeter element, we construct an equivariant bijection between noncrossing partitions under the Kreweras complement and nonnesting partitions under a Coxeter-theoretically natural cyclic action we call the Kroweras complement. Our equivariant bijection is the unique bijection that i…
Set partitions avoiding $k$-crossing and $k$-nesting have been extensively studied from the aspects of both combinatorics and mathematical biology. By using the generating tree technique, the obstinate kernel method and Zeilberger's algorithm, Lin confirmed a conjecture due independently to the author and Martinez-Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length 3 and enhanced 3-nonnesting partitions have the same cardinality. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof of this conjecture. Our bijection also enables us to provide a new bijective proof of …
Let $\mathcal O_r(n)$ be the set of $r$-regular partitions of $n$, $\mathcal D_r(n)$ the set of partitions of $n$ with parts repeated at most $r-1$ times, $\mathcal O_{1,r}(n)$ the set of partitions with exactly one part (possibly repeated) divisible by $r$, and let $\mathcal D_{1,r}(n)$ be the set of partitions in which exactly one part appears at least $r$ times. If $E_{r, t}(n)$ is the excess in the number of parts congruent to $t \pmod r$ in all partitions in $\mathcal O_r(n)$ over the number of different parts appearing at least $t$ times in all partitions in $\mathcal D_r(n)$, then $E_{r…
In this article, we investigate bijections on various classes of set partitions of classical types that preserve openers and closers. On the one hand we present bijections that interchange crossings and nestings. For types B and C, they generalize a construction by Kasraoui and Zeng for type A, whereas for type D, we were only able to construct a bijection between non-crossing and non-nesting set partitions. On the other hand we generalize a bijection to type B and C that interchanges the cardinality of the maximal crossing with the cardinality of the maximal nesting, as given by Chen, Deng, D…
It has recently been observed empirically that the number of FPL configurations with 3 sets of a, b and c nested arches equals the number of plane partitions in a box of size a x b x c. In this note, this result is proved by constructing explicitly the bijection between these FPL and plane partitions.
