The planar Turán number of a given graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges over all planar graphs on $n$ vertices that do not contain a copy of $H$ as a subgraph. Let $H_k$ be a friendship graph, which is obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. In this paper, we obtain sharp bounds of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H_k)$ and $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,K_1+P_{k+1})$ for $k\ge2$, which improves the results of Lan and Shi in Electron. J. Combin. 26 (2) (2019), \#P2.11.
Simonovits and Sós conjectured that the maximal size of a triangle-intersecting family of graphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{\binom{n}{2}-3}$. Their conjecture has recently been proved using spectral methods. We provide an elementary proof of the special case of $8$ vertices using a partition argument.
A family of graphs F is said to be triangle-intersecting if for any two graphs G,H in F, the intersection of G and H contains a triangle. A conjecture of Simonovits and Sos from 1976 states that the largest triangle-intersecting families of graphs on a fixed set of n vertices are those obtained by fixing a specific triangle and taking all graphs containing it, resulting in a family of size (1/8) 2^{n choose 2}. We prove this conjecture and some generalizations (for example, we prove that the same is true of odd-cycle-intersecting families, and we obtain best possible bounds on the size of the …
A graph on $2k+1$ vertices consisting of $k$ triangles which intersect in exactly one common vertex is called a $k$-fan and denoted by $F_k$. This paper aims to determine the graphs of order $n$ that have the maximum (adjacency) spectral radius among all graphs containing no $F_k$, for $n$ sufficiently large.
A $(c_1,c_2,...,c_k)$-coloring of $G$ is a mapping $φ:V(G)\mapsto\{1,2,...,k\}$ such that for every $i,1 \leq i \leq k$, $G[V_i]$ has maximum degree at most $c_i$, where $G[V_i]$ denotes the subgraph induced by the vertices colored $i$. Borodin and Raspaud conjecture that every planar graph without $5$-cycles and intersecting triangles is $(0,0,0)$-colorable. We prove in this paper that such graphs are $(1,1,0)$-colorable.
We prove the following the generalized Turán type result. A collection $\mathcal{T}$ of $r$ sets is an $r$-triangle if for every $T_1,T_2,\dots,T_{r-1}\in \mathcal{T}$ we have $\cap_{i=1}^{r-1}T_i\neq\emptyset$, but $\cap_{T\in \mathcal{T}}T$ is empty. A family $\mathcal{F}$ of sets is $r$-wise intersecting if for any $F_1,F_2,\dots,F_r\in \mathcal{F}$ we have $\cap_{i=1}^rF_i\neq \emptyset$ or equivalently if $\mathcal{F}$ does not contain any $m$-triangle for $m=2,3,\dots,r$. We prove that if $n\ge n_0(r,k)$, then the $r$-wise intersecting family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ contain…
Let $t$, $r$, $k$ and $n$ be positive integers and $\mathcal{F}$ a family of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set $V$. The family $ \CF $ is $ r $-wise $ t $-intersecting if for any $ F_1, \ldots, F_r \in \CF $, we have $ \abs{\cap_{i = 1}^{r}F_i}\gs t $. An $ r $-wise $ t $-intersecting family of $ r + 1 $ sets $ \{T_1, \ldots, T_{r + 1}\} $ is called an $ (r + 1,t) $-triangle if $ |T_1 \cap \cdots \cap T_{r + 1}| \ls t - 1 $. In this paper, we prove that if $ n \gs n_0(r, t, k) $, then the $ r $-wise $ t $-intersecting family $ \CF \subseteq \binom{[n]}{k} $ containing the most $ (r + 1,t) $-triangles …
Let $F_k$ denote the $k$-fan consisting of $k$ triangles which intersect in exactly one common vertex, and $S_{n,k}$ the complete split graph of order $n$ consisting of a clique on $k$ vertices and an independent set on the remaining vertices in which each vertex of the clique is adjacent to each vertex of the independent set. In this paper, it is shown that $S_{n,k}$ is the unique graph attaining the maximum signless Laplacian spectral radius among all graphs of order $n$ containing no $F_k$, provided that $k\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3k^2-k-2$.
Given a family of sets on the plane, we say that the family is intersecting if for any two sets from the family their interiors intersect. In this paper, we study intersecting families of triangles with vertices in a given set of points. In particular, we show that if a set $P$ of $n$ points is in convex position, then the largest intersecting family of triangles with vertices in $P$ contains at most $(\frac{1}{4}+o(1))\binom{n}{3}$ triangles.
An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that no bichromatic cycles are produced. The acyclic edge coloring conjecture by Fiam{č}ik (1978) and Alon, Sudakov and Zaks (2001) states that every simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is acyclically edge $(Δ+ 2)$-colorable. Despite many milestones, the conjecture remains open even for planar graphs. In this paper, we confirm affirmatively the conjecture on planar graphs without intersecting triangles. We do so by first showing, by discharging methods, that every planar graph without intersecting triangles must have at le…
We reach beyond the celebrated theorems of Erdős-Ko-Rado and Hilton-Milner, and, a recent theorem of Han-Kohayakawa, and determine all maximal intersecting triples systems. It turns out that for each $n\ge7$ there are exactly 15 pairwise non-isomorphic such systems (and 13 for $n=6$). We present our result in terms of a hierarchy of Turán numbers $\ex^{(s)}(n, M_2^{3})$, $s\ge1$, where $M_2^{3}$ is a pair of disjoint triples. Moreover, owing to our unified approach, we provide short proofs of the above mentioned results (for triple systems only). The triangle $C_3$ is defined as $C_3=\{\{x_1,y…
Let $F_s$ be the friendship graph obtained from $s$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. For fixed $s\ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$, the $F_s$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)],and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)]. Recently, the spectral extremal problems was widely studied for graphs containing no $H$ as a minor. For instance, Tait [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 166 (2019)], Zhai and Lin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 157 (…
Ellis, Filmus, and Friedgut proved an old conjecture of Simonovits and Sós showing that the maximum size of a triangle-intersecting family of graphs on $n$ vertices has size at most $2^{\binom{n}{2} - 3}$, with equality for the family of graphs containing some fixed triangle. They conjectured that their results extend to cross-intersecting families, as well to $K_t$-intersecting families. We prove these conjectures for $t \in \{3,4\}$, showing that if $\mathcal F_1$ and $\mathcal F_2$ are families of graphs on $n$ labeled vertices such that for any $G_1 \in \mathcal F_1$ and $G_2 \in \mathcal …
A family $F$ of graphs on a fixed set of $n$ vertices is called triangle-intersecting if for any $G_1,G_2 \in F$, the intersection $G_1 \cap G_2$ contains a triangle. More generally, for a fixed graph $H$, a family $F$ is $H$-intersecting if the intersection of any two graphs in $F$ contains a sub-graph isomorphic to $H$. In [D. Ellis, Y. Filmus, and E. Friedgut, Triangle-intersecting families of graphs, J. Eur. Math. Soc. 14 (2012), pp. 841--885], Ellis, Filmus and Friedgut proved a 36-year old conjecture of Simonovits and Sós stating that the maximal size of a triangle-intersecting family is…
An extremal graph for a graph $H$ on $n$ vertices is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum number of edges that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $T_{n,r}$ be the Turán graph, which is the complete $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices with part sizes that differ by at most one. The well-known Turán Theorem states that $T_{n,r}$ is the only extremal graph for complete graph $K_{r+1}$. Erdös et al. (1995) determined the extremal graphs for intersecting triangles and Chen et al. (2003) determined the maximum number of edges of the extremal graphs for intersecting cliques. In this paper, we dete…
The triangle packing number $ν(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum size of a set of edge-disjoint triangles in $G$. Tuza conjectured that in any graph $G$ there exists a set of at most $2ν(G)$ edges intersecting every triangle in $G$. We show that Tuza's conjecture holds in the random graph $G=G(n,m)$, when $m \le 0.2403n^{3/2}$ or $m\ge 2.1243n^{3/2}$. This is done by analyzing a greedy algorithm for finding large triangle packings in random graphs.
A pseudocircle is a simple closed curve on the sphere or in the plane. The study of arrangements of pseudocircles was initiated by Grünbaum, who defined them as collections of simple closed curves that pairwise intersect in exactly two crossings. Grünbaum conjectured that the number of triangular cells $p_3$ in digon-free arrangements of $n$ pairwise intersecting pseudocircles is at least $2n-4$. We present examples to disprove this conjecture. With a recursive construction based on an example with $12$ pseudocircles and $16$ triangles we obtain a family with $p_3(\mathcal{A})/n \to 16/11 = 1.…
A $(c_1,c_2,...,c_k)$-coloring of $G$ is a mapping $φ:V(G)\mapsto\{1,2,...,k\}$ such that for every $i,1 \leq i \leq k$, $G[V_i]$ has maximum degree at most $c_i$, where $G[V_i]$ denotes the subgraph induced by the vertices colored $i$. Borodin and Raspaud conjecture that every planar graph without intersecting triangles and $5$-cycles is $3$-colorable. We prove in this paper that every planar graph without intersecting triangles and $5$-cycles is (2,0,0)-colorable.
A long-standing conjecture of Zsolt Tuza asserts that the triangle covering number $τ(G)$ is at most twice the triangle packing number $ν(G)$, where the triangle packing number $ν(G)$ is the maximum size of a set of edge-disjoint triangles in $G$ and the triangle covering number $τ(G)$ is the minimal size of a set of edges intersecting all triangles. In this paper, we prove that Tuza's conjecture holds in the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,m)$ for all range of $m$, closing the gap in what was previously known. (Recently, this result was also independently proved by Jeff Kahn and Jinyoung Park.)…
Let $\mc{K}_{3,3}^3$ be the 3-graph with 15 vertices $\{x_i, y_i: 1 \le i \le 3\}$ and $\{z_{ij}: 1 \le i,j \le 3\}$, and 11 edges $\{x_1, x_2, x_3\}$, $\{y_1, y_2, y_3\}$ and $\{\{x_i, y_j, z_{ij}\}: 1 \le i,j \le 3\}$. We show that for large $n$, the unique largest $\mc{K}_{3,3}^3$-free 3-graph on $n$ vertices is a balanced blow-up of the complete 3-graph on 5 vertices. Our proof uses the stability method and a result on lagrangians of intersecting families that has independent interest.
For fixed graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized Turán problem asks for the maximum number $ex(n,H,F)$ of copies of $H$ that an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph can have. In this paper, we focus on cases with $F$ being $B_{r,s}$, the graph consisting of two cliques of size $s$ sharing $r$ common vertices. We determine $ex(n,K_t,B_{r,0})$, $ex(n,K_t,B_{r,1})$ and $ex(n,K_{a,b},B_{3,1})$ for all values of $a,b,r,t$ if $n$ is large enough.
A (general) polygonal line tiling is a graph formed by a string of cycles, each intersecting the previous at an edge, no three intersecting. In 2022, Matsushita proved the matching complex of a certain type of polygonal line tiling with even cycles is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In this paper, we extend Matsushita's work to include a larger family of graphs and carry out a closer analysis of lines of triangle and pentagons, where the Fibonacci numbers arise.
Let $H_{s,t_1,\ldots ,t_k}$ be the graph with $s$ triangles and $k$ odd cycles of lengths $t_1,\ldots ,t_k\ge 5$ intersecting in exactly one common vertex. Recently, Hou, Qiu and Liu [Discrete Math. 341 (2018) 126--137], and Yuan [J. Graph Theory 89 (1) (2018) 26--39] determined independently the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $H_{s,t_1,\ldots ,t_k}$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we determine the graphs of order $n$ that attain the maximum spectral radius among all graphs containing no $H_{s,t_1,\ldots ,t_k}$ for $n$ large enough.
Given a graph $H$ and a function $f:\mathbb{Z}^+ \longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+ $, the Ramsey-Turán number of $H$ and $f$, denoted by $RT(n, H, f(n))$, is the maximum number of edges a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices can have, which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph and also does not contain a set of $f(n)$ independent vertices. Let $r$ be a positive integer. In 1969, Erdős and Sós proved that $RT(n,K_{2r+1},o(n))=\frac{n^2}{2}(1-\frac{1}{r})+o(n^2)$. Let $F_k(2r+1)$ denote the graph consisting of $k$ copies of complete graphs $K_{2r+1}$ sharing exactly one vertex. In this paper, we show that $RT(n,F…
Let $S$ be a set of $n$ points in the plane in general position. Two line segments connecting pairs of points of $S$ cross if they have an interior point in common. Two vertex disjoint geometric graphs with vertices in $S$ cross if there are two edges, one from each graph, which cross. A set of vertex disjoint geometric graphs with vertices in $S$ is called mutually crossing if any two of them cross. We show that there exists a constant $c$ such that from any family of $n$ mutually crossing triangles, one can always obtain a family of at least $n^c$ mutually crossing $2$-paths (each of which i…
In this paper we investigate a family of matroids introduced by Ardila and Billey to study one-dimensional intersections of complete flag arrangements of $\mathbb{C}^n$. The set of lattice points $P_n$ inside the equilateral triangle $S_n$ obtained by intersecting the nonnegative cone of $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the affine hyperplane $x_1 + x_2 + x_3 = n-1$ is the ground set of a matroid $\mathcal{T}_n$ whose independent sets are the subsets $S$ of $P_n$ satisfying that $|S \cap P| \le k$ for each translation $P$ of the set $P_k$. Here we study the structure of the matroids $\mathcal{T}_n$ in conne…
For $s<r$, let $B_{r,s}$ be the graph consisting of two copies of $K_r$, which share exactly $s$ vertices. Denote by $ex(n, K_r, B_{r,s})$ the maximum number of copies of $K_r$ in a $B_{r,s}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. In 1976, Erdős and Sós determined $ex(n,K_3,B_{3,1})$. Recently, Gowers and Janzer showed that $ex(n,K_r,B_{r,r-1})=n^{r-1-o(1)}$. It is a natural question to ask for $ex(n,K_r,B_{r,s})$ for general $r$ and $s$. In this paper, we mainly consider the problem for $s=1$. Utilizing the Zykov's symmetrization, we show that $ex(n,K_4, B_{4,1})=\lfloor (n-2)^2/4\rfloor$ for $n\geq 45$…
Let $k\ge 2$ and $n_1\ge n_2\ge n_3\ge n_4$ be integers such that $n_4$ is sufficiently larger than $k$. We determine the maximum number of edges of a 4-partite graph with parts of sizes $n_1,\dots, n_4$ that does not contain $k$ vertex-disjoint triangles. For any $r> t\ge 3$, we give a conjecture on the maximum number of edges of an $r$-partite graph that does not contain $k$ vertex-disjoint cliques $K_t$.
A new $q$-analog of Genocchi numbers is introduced through a q-analog of Seidel's triangle associated to Genocchi numbers. It is then shown that these $q$-Genocchi numbers have interesting combinatorial interpretations in the classical models for Genocchi numbers such as alternating pistols, alternating permutations, non intersecting lattice paths and skew Young tableaux.
One of the oldest results in modern graph theory, due to Mantel, asserts that every triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices has at most $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$ edges. About half a century later Andrásfai studied dense triangle-free graphs and proved that the largest triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices without independent sets of size $αn$, where $2/5\le α< 1/2$, are blow-ups of the pentagon. More than 50 further years have elapsed since Andrásfai's work. In this article we make the next step towards understanding the structure of dense triangle-free graphs without large independent sets. Notably,…
The extension of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is obtained from it by adding for every pair of vertices of $G$, which is not covered by an edge in $G$, an extra edge containing this pair and $(r-2)$ new vertices. In this paper we determine the Turán number of the extension of an $r$-graph consisting of two vertex-disjoint edges, settling a conjecture of Hefetz and Keevash, who previously determined this Turán number for $r=3$. As the key ingredient of the proof we show that the Lagrangian of intersecting $r$-graphs is maximized by principally intersecting $r$-graphs for $r \geq 4$.
An extremal graph for a given graph $H$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum number of edges that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $s,t$ be integers and let $H_{s,t}$ be a graph consisting of $s$ triangles and $t$ cycles of odd lengths at least 5 which intersect in exactly one common vertex. Erdős et al. (1995) determined the extremal graphs for $H_{s,0}$. Recently, Hou et al. (2016) determined the extremal graphs for $H_{0,t}$, where the $t$ cycles have the same odd length $q$ with $q\ge 5$. In this paper, we further determine the extremal graphs for $H_{s,t}$ with $s\ge 0$ and $t\g…
The problem of determining extremal hypergraphs containing at most r isomorphic copies of some element of a given hypergraph family was first studied by Boros et al. in 2001. There are not many hypergraph families for which exact results are known concerning the size of the corresponding extremal hypergraphs, except for those equivalent to the classical Turan numbers. In this paper, we determine the size of extremal k-uniform hypergraphs containing at most one pair of 2-intersecting edges for k in {3,4}. We give a complete solution when k=3 and an almost complete solution (with eleven exceptio…
The family $Σ_r$ consists of all $r$-graphs with three edges $D_1,D_2,D_3$ such that $|D_1\cap D_2|=r-1$ and $D_1 \triangle D_2 \subseteq D_3$. A generalized triangle, $\mathcal{T}_r \in Σ_r$ is an $r$-graph on $\{1,2,\ldots,2r-1\}$ with three edges $D_1, D_2, D_3$, such that $D_1=\{1,2,\dots,r-1, r\}, D_2= \{1, 2, \dots, r-1, r+1 \}$ and $D_3 = \{r, r+1, \dots, 2r-1\}.$ Frankl and Füredi conjectured that for all $r\geq 4$, $ex(n,Σ_r) = ex(n,\mathcal{T}_r )$ for all sufficiently large $n$ and they also proved it for $r=3$. Later, Pikhurko showed that the conjecture holds for $r=4$. In this pap…
Let $S^r(n)$ be the $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with parts $A$ and $B$, where the edges consist of all $r$-tuples with $1$ vertex in $A$ and $r-1$ vertices in $B$, and the sizes of $A$ and $B$ are chosen to maximise the number of edges. Let $M_t^r$ be the $r$-graph with $t$ pairwise disjoint edges. Given an $r$-graph $F$ and a positive integer $p\geq |V(F)|$, we define the {\em extension} of $F$, denoted by $H_{p}^{F}$ as follows: Label the vertices of $F$ as $v_1,\dots,v_{|V(F)|}$. Add new vertices $v_{|V(F)|+1},\dots,v_{p}$. For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j, 1\le i<j \le p$ not contained in …
A triangle $T'$ is $\varepsilon$-similar to another triangle $T$ if their angles pairwise differ by at most $\varepsilon$. Given a triangle $T$, $\varepsilon>0$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, Bárány and Füredi asked to determine the maximum number of triangles $h(n,T,\varepsilon)$ being $\varepsilon$-similar to $T$ in a planar point set of size $n$. We show that for almost all triangles $T$ there exists $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(T)>0$ such that $h(n,T,\varepsilon)=n^3/24 (1+o(1))$. Exploring connections to hypergraph Turán problems, we use flag algebras and stability techniques for the proof.
A hypergraph is linear if any two edges intersect in at most one vertex. For a fixed $k$-uniform family ${\cal{F}}$ of hypergraphs, the linear Turán number ${\rm ex}_{\rm lin}(n,{\cal{F}})$ is the maximum number of edges in a $k$-uniform linear hypergraph $\mathcal H$ on $n$ vertices that does not contain any member of ${\cal{F}}$ as a subhypergraph. For $k\ge 2$ the $k$-fan $F^k$ is the $k$-uniform linear hypergraph having $k$ edges $f_1,\dots,f_k$ pairwise intersecting in the same vertex $v$ and an additional edge $g$ intersecting all $f_i$ in a vertex different from $v$. We prove the follow…
For positive integers $n$ and $r$, we consider $n$-vertex graphs with the maximum number of $r$-edge-colorings with no copy of a triangle where exactly two colors appear. We prove that, if $2 \leq r \leq 26$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, the maximum is attained by the bipartite Turán graph $T_2(n)$ on $n$ vertices. This is best possible, as $T_2(n)$ is not extremal for $r \geq 27$ colors and $n \geq 3$.
We give a new Jacobi--Trudi-type formula for characters of finite-dimensional irreducible representations in type $C_n$ using characters of the fundamental representations and non-intersecting lattice paths. We give equivalent determinant formulas for the decomposition multiplicities for tensor powers of the spin representation in type $B_n$ and the exterior representation in type $C_n$. This gives a combinatorial proof of an identity of Katz and equates such a multiplicity with the dimension of an irreducible representation in type $C_n$. By taking certain specializations, we obtain identitie…

In a recent work, the combinatorial interpretation of the polynomial alpha(n;k1,k2,...,kn) counting the number of Monotone Triangles with bottom row k1 < k2 < ... < kn was extended to weakly decreasing sequences k1 >= k2 >= ... >= kn. In this case the evaluation of the polynomial is equal to a signed enumeration of objects called Decreasing Monotone Triangles. In this paper we define Generalized Monotone Triangles - a joint generalization of both ordinary Monotone Triangles and Decreasing Monotone Triangles. As main result of the paper we prove that the evaluation of alpha(n;k1,k2,...,kn) at a…
We construct dense, triangle-free, chromatic-critical graphs of chromatic number $k$ for all $k\geq 4$. For $k\geq 6$ our constructions have $> (\frac{1}{4} -\varepsilon)n^2$ edges, which is asymptotically best possible by Turán's theorem. We also demonstrate (nonconstructively) the existence of dense $k$-critical graphs avoiding all odd cycles of length $\leq \ell$ for any $\ell$ and any $k\geq 4$, again with a best possible density of $>(\frac{1}{4} -\varepsilon)n^2$ edges for $k\geq 6$. The families of graphs without triangles or of given odd-girth are thus rare examples where we know the c…
We study the following family of problems: Given a set of $n$ points in convex position, what is the maximum number triangles one can create having these points as vertices while avoiding certain sets of forbidden configurations. As forbidden configurations we consider all 8 ways in which a pair of triangles in such a point set can interact. This leads to 256 extremal Turán-type questions. We give nearly tight (within a $\log n$ factor) bounds for 248 of these questions and show that the remaining 8 questions are all asymptotically equivalent to Stein's longstanding tripod packing problem.
Almost $50$ years ago Erdős and Purdy asked the following question: Given $n$ points in the plane, how many triangles can be approximate congruent to equilateral triangles? They pointed out that by dividing the points evenly into three small clusters built around the three vertices of a fixed equilateral triangle, one gets at least $\left\lfloor \frac{n}{3} \right\rfloor \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{n+1}{3} \right\rfloor \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{n+2}{3} \right\rfloor$ such approximate copies. In this paper we provide a matching upper bound and thereby answer their question. More generally, for eve…
Given a graph $G$, a Berge copy of $G$ is a hypergraph obtained by enlarging the edges arbitrarily. Gy\H ori in 2006 showed that for $r=3$ or $r=4$, an $r$-uniform $n$-vertex Berge triangle-free hypergraph has at most $\lfloor n^2/8(r-2)\rfloor$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough, and this bound is sharp. The book graph $B_t$ consists of $t$ triangles sharing an edge. Very recently, Ghosh, Győri, Nagy-György, Paulos, Xiao and Zamora showed that a 3-uniform $n$-vertex Berge $B_t$-free hypergraph has at most $n^2/8+o(n^2)$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough. They conjectured that this bound can be…
The generalized Turán number $ex(n,K_s,H)$ is the maximum number of complete graph $K_s$ in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles. Erdős and Sós (1976) determined the value of $ex(n,K_3,F_2)$. Alon and Shikhelman (2016) proved that $ex(n,K_3, F_k)\le (9k-15)(k+1)n.$ In this paper, by using a method developed by Chung and Frankl in hypergraph theory, we determine the exact value of $ex(n,K_3,F_k)$ and the extremal graph for any $F_k$ when $n\ge 4k^3$.
