Owing to the overwhelming accuracy of the deep learning method demonstrated at the 2012 image classification competition, deep learning has been successfully applied to a variety of other tasks. The high-precision detection and recognition of Kuzushiji, a Japanese cursive script used for transcribing historical documents, has been made possible through the use of deep learning. In recent years, competitions on Kuzushiji recognition have been held, and many researchers have proposed various recognition methods. This study examines recent research trends, current problems, and future prospects in Kuzushiji recognition using deep learning.
Recognizing the full-page of Japanese historical documents is a challenging problem due to the complex layout/background and difficulty of writing styles, such as cursive and connected characters. Most of the previous methods divided the recognition process into character segmentation and recognition. However, those methods provide only character bounding boxes and classes without text transcription. In this paper, we enlarge our previous humaninspired recognition system from multiple lines to the full-page of Kuzushiji documents. The human-inspired recognition system simulates human eye movem…

Kuzushiji, a cursive writing style, had been used in Japan for over a thousand years starting from the 8th century. Over 3 millions books on a diverse array of topics, such as literature, science, mathematics and even cooking are preserved. However, following a change to the Japanese writing system in 1900, Kuzushiji has not been included in regular school curricula. Therefore, most Japanese natives nowadays cannot read books written or printed just 150 years ago. Museums and libraries have invested a great deal of effort into creating digital copies of these historical documents as a safeguar…

Autonomous Vehicles (AV) are becoming more capable of navigating in complex environments with dynamic and changing conditions. A key component that enables these intelligent vehicles to overcome such conditions and become more autonomous is the sophistication of the perception and localization systems. As part of the localization system, place recognition has benefited from recent developments in other perception tasks such as place categorization or object recognition, namely with the emergence of deep learning (DL) frameworks. This paper surveys recent approaches and methods used in place re…

Finger vein recognition is an emerging biometric recognition technology. Different from the other biometric features on the body surface, the venous vascular tissue of the fingers is buried deep inside the skin. Due to this advantage, finger vein recognition is highly stable and private. They are almost impossible to be stolen and difficult to interfere with by external conditions. Unlike the finger vein recognition methods based on traditional machine learning, the artificial neural network technique, especially deep learning, it without relying on feature engineering and have superior perfor…

The limited capacity to recognize faces under occlusions is a long-standing problem that presents a unique challenge for face recognition systems and even for humans. The problem regarding occlusion is less covered by research when compared to other challenges such as pose variation, different expressions, etc. Nevertheless, occluded face recognition is imperative to exploit the full potential of face recognition for real-world applications. In this paper, we restrict the scope to occluded face recognition. First, we explore what the occlusion problem is and what inherent difficulties can aris…
Person recognition at a distance entails recognizing the identity of an individual appearing in images or videos collected by long-range imaging systems such as drones or surveillance cameras. Despite recent advances in deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), this remains challenging. Images or videos collected by long-range cameras often suffer from atmospheric turbulence, blur, low-resolution, unconstrained poses, and poor illumination. In this paper, we provide a brief survey of recent advances in person recognition at a distance. In particular, we review recent work in multi-spectral f…

The task of action recognition or action detection involves analyzing videos and determining what action or motion is being performed. The primary subject of these videos are predominantly humans performing some action. However, this requirement can be relaxed to generalize over other subjects such as animals or robots. The applications can range from anywhere between human-computer inter-action to automated video editing proposals. When we consider spatiotemporal action recognition, we deal with action localization. This task not only involves determining what action is being performed but al…

Zero-Shot Action Recognition has attracted attention in the last years and many approaches have been proposed for recognition of objects, events and actions in images and videos. There is a demand for methods that can classify instances from classes that are not present in the training of models, especially in the complex problem of automatic video understanding, since collecting, annotating and labeling videos are difficult and laborious tasks. We have identified that there are many methods available in the literature, however, it is difficult to categorize which techniques can be considered …

Derived from rapid advances in computer vision and machine learning, video analysis tasks have been moving from inferring the present state to predicting the future state. Vision-based action recognition and prediction from videos are such tasks, where action recognition is to infer human actions (present state) based upon complete action executions, and action prediction to predict human actions (future state) based upon incomplete action executions. These two tasks have become particularly prevalent topics recently because of their explosively emerging real-world applications, such as visual…
For humans, object detection, recognition, and tracking are innate. These provide the ability for human to perceive their environment and objects within their environment. This ability however doesn't translate well in computers. In Computer Vision and Multimedia, it is becoming increasingly more important to detect, recognize and track objects in images and/or videos. Many of these applications, such as facial recognition, surveillance, animation, are used for tracking features and/or people. However, these tasks prove challenging for computers to do effectively, as there is a significant amo…

The use of the iris and periocular region as biometric traits has been extensively investigated, mainly due to the singularity of the iris features and the use of the periocular region when the image resolution is not sufficient to extract iris information. In addition to providing information about an individual's identity, features extracted from these traits can also be explored to obtain other information such as the individual's gender, the influence of drug use, the use of contact lenses, spoofing, among others. This work presents a survey of the databases created for ocular recognition,…

Face recognition is one of the most popular and long-standing topics in computer vision. With the recent development of deep learning techniques and large-scale datasets, deep face recognition has made remarkable progress and been widely used in many real-world applications. Given a natural image or video frame as input, an end-to-end deep face recognition system outputs the face feature for recognition. To achieve this, a typical end-to-end system is built with three key elements: face detection, face alignment, and face representation. The face detection locates faces in the image or frame. …
