Detection and recognition of text from scans and other images, commonly denoted as Optical Character Recognition (OCR), is a widely used form of automated document processing with a number of methods available. Yet OCR systems still do not achieve 100% accuracy, requiring human corrections in applications where correct readout is essential. Advances in machine learning enabled even more challenging scenarios of text detection and recognition "in-the-wild" - such as detecting text on objects from photographs of complex scenes. While the state-of-the-art methods for in-the-wild text recognition …

Signage is everywhere and a robot should be able to take advantage of signs to help it localize (including Visual Place Recognition (VPR)) and map. Robust text detection & recognition in the wild is challenging due to such factors as pose, irregular text, illumination, and occlusion. We propose an end-to-end scene text spotting model that simultaneously outputs the text string and bounding boxes. This model is more suitable for VPR. Our central contribution is introducing utilizing an end-to-end scene text spotting framework to adequately capture the irregular and occluded text regions in diff…
We introduce Chinese Text in the Wild, a very large dataset of Chinese text in street view images. While optical character recognition (OCR) in document images is well studied and many commercial tools are available, detection and recognition of text in natural images is still a challenging problem, especially for more complicated character sets such as Chinese text. Lack of training data has always been a problem, especially for deep learning methods which require massive training data. In this paper we provide details of a newly created dataset of Chinese text with about 1 million Chinese ch…
The literature review presented below on Action Recognition in the wild is the in-depth study of Research Papers. In this paper, we describe an entry to the third Emotion Recognition in the Wild Challenge, EmotiW2015. We detail the associated experiments and show that, through more accurately locating the facial landmarks, and considering only the distances between them, we can achieve a surprising level of performance. The resulting system is not only more accurate than the challenge baseline, but also much simpler.
Information surrounds people in modern life. Text is a very efficient type of information that people use for communication for centuries. However, automated text-in-the-wild recognition remains a challenging problem. The major limitation for a DL system is the lack of training data. For the competitive performance, training set must contain many samples that replicate the real-world cases. While there are many high-quality datasets for English text recognition; there are no available datasets for Russian language. In this paper, we present a large-scale human-labeled dataset for Russian text …

With the introduction of large-scale datasets and deep learning models capable of learning complex representations, impressive advances have emerged in face detection and recognition tasks. Despite such advances, existing datasets do not capture the difficulty of face recognition in the wildest scenarios, such as hostile disputes or fights. Furthermore, existing datasets do not represent completely unconstrained cases of low resolution, high blur and large pose/occlusion variances. To this end, we introduce the Wildest Faces dataset, which focuses on such adverse effects through violent scenes…

This paper presents an easy and efficient face detection and face recognition approach using free software components from the internet. Face detection and face recognition problems have wide applications in home and office security. Therefore this work will helpful for those searching for a free face off-the-shelf face detection system. Using this system, faces can be detected in uncontrolled environments. In the detection phase, every individual face is detected and in the recognition phase the detected faces are compared with the faces in a given data set and recognized.

Primate face recognition performance is evaluated using two existing state-of-the-art open-source systems, (i) FaceNet and (ii) SphereFace, (iii) a lemur face recognition system from literature, and (iv) our new convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture called PrimNet. Three recognition scenarios are considered: verification (1:1 compa…
Majority of the face recognition algorithms use query faces captured from uncontrolled, in the wild, environment. Often caused by the cameras limited capabilities, it is common for these captured facial images to be blurred or low resolution. Super resolution algorithms are therefore crucial in improving the resolution of such images especially when the image size is small requiring enlargement. This paper aims to demonstrate the effect of one of the state-of-the-art algorithms in the field of image super resolution. To demonstrate the functionality of the algorithm, various before and after 3…
Soft biometrics inference in surveillance scenarios is a topic of interest for various applications, particularly in security-related areas. However, soft biometric analysis is not extensively reported in wild conditions. In particular, previous works on gender recognition report their results in face datasets, with relatively good image quality and frontal poses. Given the uncertainty of the availability of the facial region in wild conditions, we consider that these methods are not adequate for surveillance settings. To overcome these limitations, we: 1) present frontal and wild face version…

Group emotion recognition in the wild is a challenging problem, due to the unstructured environments in which everyday life pictures are taken. Some of the obstacles for an effective classification are occlusions, variable lighting conditions, and image quality. In this work we present a solution based on a novel combination of deep neural networks and Bayesian classifiers. The neural network works on a bottom-up approach, analyzing emotions expressed by isolated faces. The Bayesian classifier estimates a global emotion integrating top-down features obtained through a scene descriptor. In orde…

Despite the great advances in visual recognition, it has been witnessed that recognition models trained on clean images of common datasets are not robust against distorted images in the real world. To tackle this issue, we present a Universal and Recognition-friendly Image Enhancement network, dubbed URIE, which is attached in front of existing recognition models and enhances distorted input to improve their performance without retraining them. URIE is universal in that it aims to handle various factors of image degradation and to be incorporated with any arbitrary recognition models. Also, it…
The goal of this paper is to label all the animal individuals present in every frame of a video. Unlike previous methods that have principally concentrated on labelling face tracks, we aim to label individuals even when their faces are not visible. We make the following contributions: (i) we introduce a 'Count, Crop and Recognise' (CCR) multistage recognition process for frame level labelling. The Count and Recognise stages involve specialised CNNs for the task, and we show that this simple staging gives a substantial boost in performance; (ii) we compare the recall using frame based labelling…
Light field (LF) cameras provide rich spatio-angular visual representations by sensing the visual scene from multiple perspectives and have recently emerged as a promising technology to boost the performance of human-machine systems such as biometrics and affective computing. Despite the significant success of LF representation for constrained facial image analysis, this technology has never been used for face and expression recognition in the wild. In this context, this paper proposes a new deep face and expression recognition solution, called CapsField, based on a convolutional neural networ…
In this work we tackle the task of video-based audio-visual emotion recognition, within the premises of the 2nd Workshop and Competition on Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW2). Poor illumination conditions, head/body orientation and low image resolution constitute factors that can potentially hinder performance in case of methodologies that solely rely on the extraction and analysis of facial features. In order to alleviate this problem, we leverage both bodily and contextual features, as part of a broader emotion recognition framework. We choose to use a standard CNN-RNN cascade a…
Recognizing materials in real-world images is a challenging task. Real-world materials have rich surface texture, geometry, lighting conditions, and clutter, which combine to make the problem particularly difficult. In this paper, we introduce a new, large-scale, open dataset of materials in the wild, the Materials in Context Database (MINC), and combine this dataset with deep learning to achieve material recognition and segmentation of images in the wild. MINC is an order of magnitude larger than previous material databases, while being more diverse and well-sampled across its 23 categories. …

Fingerspelling in sign language has been the means of communicating technical terms and proper nouns when they do not have dedicated sign language gestures. Automatic recognition of fingerspelling can help resolve communication barriers when interacting with deaf people. The main challenges prevalent in fingerspelling recognition are the ambiguity in the gestures and strong articulation of the hands. The automatic recognition model should address high inter-class visual similarity and high intra-class variation in the gestures. Most of the existing research in fingerspelling recognition has fo…

Existing studies for gait recognition are dominated by 2D representations like the silhouette or skeleton of the human body in constrained scenes. However, humans live and walk in the unconstrained 3D space, so projecting the 3D human body onto the 2D plane will discard a lot of crucial information like the viewpoint, shape, and dynamics for gait recognition. Therefore, this paper aims to explore dense 3D representations for gait recognition in the wild, which is a practical yet neglected problem. In particular, we propose a novel framework to explore the 3D Skinned Multi-Person Linear (SMPL) …

Compared with the image-based static facial expression recognition (SFER) task, the dynamic facial expression recognition (DFER) task based on video sequences is closer to the natural expression recognition scene. However, DFER is often more challenging. One of the main reasons is that video sequences often contain frames with different expression intensities, especially for the facial expressions in the real-world scenarios, while the images in SFER frequently present uniform and high expression intensities. However, if the expressions with different intensities are treated equally, the featu…

Facial expressions recognition (FER) in the wild is a challenging task and existing methods can't perform well. However, for occluded faces (containing occlusion caused by other objects and self-occlusion caused by head posture changes), the attention mechanism has the ability to focus on the non-occluded regions automatically. In this paper, we propose a Lossless Attention Model (LLAM) for convolutional neur…

Facial expression recognition (FER) is a challenging topic in artificial intelligence. Recently, many researchers have attempted to introduce Vision Transformer (ViT) to the FER task. However, ViT cannot fully utilize emotional features extracted from raw images and requires a lot of computing resources. To overcome these problems, we propose a quaternion orthogonal transformer (QOT) for FER. Firstly, to reduce redundancy among features extracted from pre-trained ResNet-50, we use the orthogonal loss to decompose and compact these features into three sets of orthogonal sub-features. Secondly, …

Facial Expression Recognition (FER) in the wild is an extremely challenging task in computer vision due to variant backgrounds, low-quality facial images, and the subjectiveness of annotators. These uncertainties make it difficult for neural networks to learn robust features on limited-scale datasets. Moreover, the networks can be easily distributed by the above factors and perform incorrect decisions. Recently, vision transformer (ViT) and data-efficient image transformers (DeiT) present their significant performance in traditional classification tasks. The self-attention mechanism makes tran…
Face recognition has achieved outstanding performance in the last decade with the development of deep learning techniques. Nowadays, the challenges in face recognition are related to specific scenarios, for instance, the performance under diverse image quality, the robustness for aging and edge cases of person age (children and elders), distinguishing of related identities. In this set of problems, recognizing children's faces is one of the most sensitive and important. One of the reasons for this problem is the existing bias towards adults in existing face datasets. In this work, we present a…
Obtaining large, human labelled speech datasets to train models for emotion recognition is a notoriously challenging task, hindered by annotation cost and label ambiguity. In this work, we consider the task of learning embeddings for speech classification without access to any form of labelled audio. We base our approach on a simple hypothesis: that the emotional content of speech correlates with the facial expression of the speaker. By exploiting this relationship, we show that annotations of expression can be transferred from the visual domain (faces) to the speech domain (voices) through cr…
One of the key issues in facial expression recognition in the wild (FER-W) is that curating large-scale labeled facial images is challenging due to the inherent complexity and ambiguity of facial images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a self-supervised simple facial landmark encoding (SimFLE) method that can learn effective encoding of facial landmarks, which are important features for improving the performance of FER-W, without expensive labels. Specifically, we introduce novel FaceMAE module for this purpose. FaceMAE reconstructs masked facial images with elaborately designed semantic …

Emotion recognition aims to interpret the emotional states of a person based on various inputs including audio, visual, and textual cues. This paper focuses on emotion recognition using visual features. To leverage the correlation between facial expression and the emotional state of a person, pioneering methods rely primarily on facial features. However, facial features are often unreliable in natural unconstrained scenarios, such as in crowded scenes, as the face lacks pixel resolution and contains artifacts due to occlusion and blur. To address this, in the wild emotion recognition exploits …

Existing studies for gait recognition are dominated by in-the-lab scenarios. Since people live in real-world senses, gait recognition in the wild is a more practical problem that has recently attracted the attention of the community of multimedia and computer vision. Current methods that obtain state-of-the-art performance on in-the-lab benchmarks achieve much worse accuracy on the recently proposed in-the-wild datasets because these methods can hardly model the varied temporal dynamics of gait sequences in unconstrained scenes. Facial expression recognition (FER) is an essential task for understanding human behaviors. As one of the most informative behaviors of humans, facial expressions are often compound and variable, which is manifested by the fact that different people may express the same expression in very different ways. However, most FER methods still use one-hot or soft labels as the supervision, which lack sufficient semantic descriptions of facial expressions and are less interpretable. Recently, contrastive vision-language pre-training (VLP) models (e.g., CLIP) use text as supervision and have injected ne…

In this paper, we introduce a facial action unit recognition method based on transfer learning. We first use available facial images with expression labels to train the feature extraction network. Then we fine-tune the network for facial action unit recognition.
Digital images nowadays have various styles of appearance, in the aspects of color tones, contrast, vignetting, and etc. These 'picture styles' are directly related to the scene radiance, image pipeline of the camera, and post processing functions. Due to the complexity and nonlinearity of these causes, popular gradient-based image descriptors won't be invariant to different picture styles, which will decline the performance of object recognition. Given that images shared online or created by individual users are taken with a wide range of devices and may be processed by various post processin…
