We extend the notion of a {$p$-permutation equivalence} between two $p$-blocks $A$ and $B$ of finite groups $G$ and $H$, from the definition in [Boltje-Xu 2008] to a virtual $p$-permutation bimodule whose components have twisted diagonal vertices. It is shown that various invariants of $A$ and $B$ are preserved, including defect groups, fusion systems, and Külshammer-Puig classes. Moreover it is shown that $p$-permutation equivalences have additional surprising properties. They have only one constituent with maximal vertex and the set of $p$-permutation equivalences between $A$ and $B$ is finite (possibly empty). The paper uses new methods: a consequent use of module structures on subgroups of $G\times H$ arising from Brauer constructions which in general are not direct product subgroups, the necessary adaptation of the notion of tensor products between bimodules, and a general formula (stated in these new terms) for the Brauer construction of a tensor product of $p$-permutation bimodules.
A perfect isometry $I$ (introduced by Broué) between two blocks $B$ and $C$ is a frequent phenomenon in the block theory of finite groups. It maps an irreducible character $ψ$ of $C$ to $\pm$ an irreducible character of $B$. Broué proved that the ratio of the codegrees of $ψ$ and $I(ψ)$ is a rational number with $p$-value zero and that its class in $\mathbb{F}_p$ is independent of $ψ$. We call this element the Broué invariant of $I$. The goal of this paper is to show that if $I$ comes from a $p$-permutation equivalence or a splendid Rickard equivalence between $B$ and $C$ then, up to a sign, t…
We clarify the notion of effective equivalence and characterize geometrically the effectively equivalent permutation groups. In particular, we present examples showing that the latter do not correspond to affinely equivalent polytopes thereby answering Question 2.12 of [BHNP09]. We apply our characterization to our examples and formulate several questions.
We give sufficient conditions on $p$-blocks of $p$-nilpotent groups over $\mathbb{F}_p$ to be splendidly Rickard equivalent and $p$-permutation equivalent to their Brauer correspondents. The paper also contains Galois descent results on $p$-permutation modules and $p$-permutation equivalences that hold for arbitrary groups.
We give the class of finite groups which arise as the permutation groups of cyclic codes over finite fields. Furthermore, we extend the results of Brand and Huffman et al. and we find the properties of the set of permutations by which two cyclic codes of length p^r can be equivalent. We also find the set of permutations by which two quasi-cyclic codes can be equivalent.
We classify principal blocks of finite groups with semidihedral defect groups up to splendid Morita equivalence. This completes the classification of all principal $2$-blocks of tame representation type up to splendid Morita equivalence and shows that Puig's Finiteness Conjecture holds for such blocks.
We show that several Morita equivalence classes of tame algebras do not occur as blocks of finite groups. This refines classifications by Erdmann of classes of blocks with dihedral, semidihedral, and generalised quaternion defect groups. In particular we now have a complete classification of the Morita equivalence classes of blocks of finite groups with dihedral defect groups.
We prove that splendid Morita equivalences between principal blocks of finite groups with dihedral Sylow $2$-subgroups realised by Scott modules can be lifted to splendid Morita equivalences between principal blocks of finite groups with generalised quaternion Sylow $2$-subgroups realised by Scott modules.
Given a dihedral $2$-group $P$ of order at least~8, we classify the splendid Morita equivalence classes of principal $2$-blocks with defect groups isomorphic to $P$. To this end we construct explicit stable equivalences of Morita type induced by specific Scott modules using Brauer indecomposability and gluing methods; we then determine when these stable equivalences are actually Morita equivalences, and hence automatically splendid Morita equivalences. Finally, we compute the generalised decomposition numbers in each case.
By results of the second author, a source algebra equivalence between two $p$-blocks of finite groups induces an equivalence between the categories of cohomological Mackey functors associated with these blocks, and a splendid derived equivalence between two blocks induces a derived equivalence between the corresponding categories of cohomological Mackey functors. The main result of this paper proves a partial converse: an equivalence (resp. Rickard equivalence) between the categories of cohomological Mackey functors of two blocks of finite groups induces a permeable Morita (resp. derived) equi…
We show that the splendid Rickard complexes for blocks with Klein four defect groups constructed by Rickard and Linckelmann descend to non-split fields. As a corollary, Navarro's refinement of the Alperin-McKay conjecture holds for blocks with a Klein four defect group. We also prove that splendid Morita equivalences between blocks and their Brauer correspondents (if exist) descend to non-split situations.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $(K,\mathcal{O},k)$ be a $p$-modular system "large enough". Let $R=\mathcal{O}$ or $k$. There is a bijection between the blocks of the group algebra $RG$ and the central primitive idempotents (the blocks) of the so-called cohomological Mackey algebra $coμ_{R}(G)$. Here, we prove that a so-called permeable derived equivalence between two blocks of group algebras implies the existence of a derived equivalence between the corresponding blocks of cohomological Mackey algebras. In particular, in the context of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture, if two blocks are …
By results of Rognerud, a source algebra equivalence between two $p$-blocks of finite groups induces an equivalence between the categories of cohomological Mackey functors associated with these blocks, and a splendid derived equivalence between two blocks induces a derived equivalence between the corresponding categories of cohomological Mackey functors. We prove this by giving an intrinsic description of cohomological Mackey functors of a block in terms of the source algebras of the block, and then using this description to construct explicit two-sided tilting complexes realising the above me…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, let $R$ be a commutative ring, and let $\mathbb{F}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We consider the $R$-linear category $\mathcal{F}^Δ_{Rpp_k}$ of diagonal $p$-permutation functors over $R$. We first show that the category $\mathcal{F}^Δ_{\mathbb{F}pp_k}$ is semisimple, and we give a parametrization of its simple objects, together with a description of their evaluations. Next, to any pair $(G,b)$ of a finite group $G$ and a block idempotent $b$ of $kG$, we associate a diagonal $p$-permutation functor $RT^Δ_…
For a set $Ω$ an unordered relation on $Ω$ is a family R of subsets of $Ω.$ If R is such a relation we let G(R) be the group of all permutations on $Ω$ that preserves R, that is g belongs to G(R) if and only if x in R implies x^{g}\in R. We are interested in permutation groups which can be represented as G=G(R) for a suitable unordered relation R on $Ω.$ When this is the case, we say that G is defined by the relation R, or that G is a relation group. We prove that a primitive permutation group different from the Alternating Group and of degree bigger or equal to 11 is a relation groups. The sa…
We describe a general technique to classify blocks of finite groups, and we apply it to determine Morita equivalence classes of blocks with elementary abelian defect groups of order 32 with respect to a complete discrete valuation ring with an algebraically closed residue field of characteristic two. As a consequence we verify that a conjecture of Harada holds on these blocks.
We classify the Morita equivalence classes of principal blocks with elementary abelian defect groups of order 64 with respect to a complete discrete valuation ring with an algebraically closed residue field of characteristic two.
Which subgroups of the symmetric group S_n arise as invariance groups of n-variable functions defined on a k-element domain? It appears that the higher the difference n-k, the more difficult it is to answer this question. For k>=n, the answer is easy: all subgroups of S_n are invariance groups. We give a complete answer in the cases k=n-1 and k=n-2, and we also give a partial answer in the general case: we describe invariance groups when n is much larger than n-k. The proof utilizes Galois connections and the corresponding closure operators on S_n, which turn out to provide a generalization of…
As a step to establish the blockwise Alperin weight conjecture for all finite groups, we verify the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition introduced by Navarro--Tiep and Späth for simple groups of Lie type $\mathsf A$, split or twisted. Key to the proofs is to reduce the verification of the inductive condition to the isolated (that means unipotent) blocks, using the Jordan decomposition for blocks of finite reductive groups given by Bonnafé, Dat and Rouquier.
We prove the existence of Morita equivalences between the spin blocks at the extremal points of strings in the block-reduced crystal graph. When the parities of the core partitions are not preserved, these equivalences require crossovers, with a block of the symmtric group Morita equivalent to a block of the alternating group and vice versa. The result permits in improvement of the bound for Donovan's Conjecture given by Kessar.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $(K,\mathcal{O},k)$ be a $p$-modular system. Let $R=\mathcal{O}$ or $k$. There is a bijection between the blocks of the group algebra and the blocks of the so-called $p$-local Mackey algebra $μ_{R}^{1}(G)$. Let $b$ be a block of $RG$ with abelian defect group $D$. Let $b'$ be its Brauer correspondant in $N_{G}(D)$. It is conjectured by Broué that the blocks $RGb$ and $RN_{G}(D)b'$ are derived equivalent. Here we look at equivalences between the corresponding blocks of $p$-local Mackey algebras. We prove that an analogue of the Broué's conjecture is true for the $p…
A permutation polytope is the convex hull of a group of permutation matrices. In this paper we investigate the combinatorics of permutation polytopes and their faces. As applications we completely classify permutation polytopes in dimensions 2,3,4, and the corresponding permutation groups up to a suitable notion of equivalence. We also provide a list of combinatorial types of possibly occuring faces of permutation polytopes up to dimension four.
A classification is given of rank 3 group actions which are quasiprimitive but not primitive. There are two infinite families and a finite number of individual imprimitive examples. When combined with earlier work of Bannai, Kantor, Liebler, Liebeck and Saxl, this yields a classification of all quasiprimitive rank 3 permutation groups. Our classification is achieved by first classifying imprimitive almost simple permutation groups which induce a 2-transitive action on a block system and for which a block stabiliser acts 2-transitively on the block. We also determine those imprimitive rank 3 pe…
We answer a question of Paterson, showing that all block systems for the group generated by the round functions of a key-alternating block cipher are the translates of a linear subspace. Following up remarks of Paterson and Shamir, we exhibit a connection to truncated differential cryptanalysis. We also give a condition that guarantees that the group generated by the round functions of a key-alternating block cipher is primitive. This applies in particular to AES.
We classify the Morita equivalence classes of blocks with elementary abelian defect groups of order $16$ with respect to a complete discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field of characteristic two. As a consequence, blocks with this defect group are derived equivalent to their Brauer correspondent in the normalizer of a defect group and so satisfy Broué's Conjecture.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, let $R$ be a commutative ring and let $\mathcal{F}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. We introduce the category $\overline{\mathcal{F}_{Rpp_k}}$ of stable diagonal $p$-permutation functors over $R$. We prove that the category $\overline{\mathcal{F}_{\mathbb{F}pp_k}}$ is semisimple and give a parametrization of its simple objects in terms of the simple diagonal $p$-permutation functors. We also introduce the notion of a stable functorial equivalence over $R$ between blocks of finite groups. We prove that if …
If $G$ is a group of permutations of a set $Ω$ and $α\in Ω$, then the {\em $α$-suborbits} of $G$ are the orbits of the stabilizer $G_α$ on $Ω$. The cardinality of an $α$-suborbit is called a {\em subdegree} of $G$. If the only $G$-invariant equivalence classes on $Ω$ are the trivial and universal relations, then $G$ is said to be a {\em primitive} group of permutations of $Ω$. In this paper we determine the structure of all primitive permutation groups whose subdegrees are bounded above by a finite cardinal number.
